Marks is a fantastic auto repair shop. The mechanics have gone above and beyond to fix and service my cars. They even have some loaner cars if you call ahead. The best thing about Marks is they tell you what they are going to do before they do it unlike some repair shops I've been to where they've replaced items we didn't talk about. I've used Marks for over 10 years now. read more

Do not trust this place. My elder church friend brought her toyota PU here. They charged her $308 and told her the obvious "your vehicle needs work". Didn't put in 1 minute of work. I just went over and spoke to her AND repaired all 3 problems in 1.5 hours! Sick people. read more

I broke down in Hood River this last summer, even though the shop was booked out and they could have easily told me to take a hike, the guys at Mark's were kind enough to help my dogs and I get fixed up and back on the road in no time! He even had a loaner vehicle for me to borrow. Extremely honest mechanics, don't try to sell you what you don't need. They are willing to tell you what's wrong and explain it so you understand. You don't run into many mechanic shops that operate with such good integrity, highly recommend service at Marks. read more

I see other people have had issue with Jim. Mark's Automotive has a local reputation for refusing cars that are over 10 years old and for being expensive to the owners they do allow. I see someone wrote, "The best thing about Marks is they tell you what they are going to do before they do it," ok, not in my case. In my case, it was, "probably a little oil in the turbocharger, very common," but ultimately they did not remove oil from the turbocharger. I can attest that Jim charged me over $300, to figure out the computer was broken and that I would have to take it to the dealer - although he was generous with likely scenarios that the vehicle would cease to function before I got it there. His mechanic attempted to show me how I could circumvent a safety feature, to make the vehicle actually drive, which I don't think I was able to follow and he told me that if I just changed the oil, it would probably clear everything up. This, of course, from an "oil change" service that already has $300 teeth in my wallet, with nothing gained beyond condemnation for mistreating my vehicle. Probably won't be going back, I'm not an Insitu engineer with wheelbarrows of cash to make mechanics friendly. read more

I would stay FAR AWAY from this repair shop. The owner Jim is not an honest business person from my limited experience, and he's more interested in gouging prices to the White Salmon locals rather than running a decent auto repair business. Ted & Charlotte on the other hand were very helpful, and worked with me to understand the costs & labor involved for my beater vehicle.... thank you both. Jim, on the other hand, was pissed at me for asking on two occasions to work with me on the price & had the audacity to CHEW ME OUT for raising questions on the fairness of his pricing. Wow!! So much for supporting a local business. Please do yourself a favor... avoid this shop, and go visit Paco up the road instead. read more

I emailed Jim about fixing my power steering leak and asked they do brakes, replace the serpentine belt and adjust the timing nut. I expected to spend money, but figured as long as they fixed the problem I would be happy. I picked up my truck about a month later and when I picked it up the bill was $4000, which I thought was pretty high but figured what the heck as long as it's running tip top I was happy. The issues started from there, upon pickup I noticed the serpentine belt hadn't been replaced so I asked why it hadn't been done and also my parking brake hadn't been adjusted correctly to hold my truck. I immediately went back in and Jim and his mechanic fixed both the issues. From there I drove it for about two weeks and noticed the same issues I had prior to bringing it in. The power steering reservoir was dry, I thought maybe they had missed filling it up so went to NAPA bought fluid and filled the reservoir up and went on my way. Another few weeks goes by and I notice again that my trucks power steering pump is running dry so I fill it up again and then check to see if it was leaking which it was. I brought the truck back to Jim and said hey THE THING I PAID YOU TO FIX WASN'T FIXED. He looked at it, then I dropped it off and then he fixed it. Jim called me and tells me I can come pick it up and square away the bill for it later. To which I said what bill? I paid him $4000 to fix the problem of a leaking power steering pump and it wasn't fixed. He tried to tell me that it's a new problem that started after I left. It pissed me off pretty good that I brought my truck to him to fix the leak and paid him 4 grand for parts and labor that I didn't even need. He charged diagnosing $105/hr along with a new steering box $630 and labor for him to not fix the problem and then try and charge me after the fact and tell me it's a new problem. A cursory look online and you can find the part for $420 and they get the returned core fee too. The fact of the matter is it was always leaking out of the same spot since bringing it in and they misdiagnosed it and replaced my steering box along with a lot of other parts at my expense along with ripping me off. It's pure incompetence and for him to not recognize that, then try and charge me more after not fixing the original problem and then to tell me he doesn't want my business!? Total grade A bullshit the man is a snake. A simple apology and recognizing that you made a mistake would have made me respect you at a minimum and not pissed me off enough to write this. I warn you the same way I was warned, Jim will add all sorts of extra's then blame you for his shoddy work and then tell you to piss off. DONT BRING YOUR CAR TO THIS GUY. read more

I took my van here a month ago when it was over heating and making some noises. There was no problem even though my passenger and drivers side door don't open they fixed the mechanical issues with my car. today when I dropped off my van the owner, Jim, was not there. the mechanic on site remembered my vehicle and the doors then I dropped my keys and left. I get home the owner Jim calls me to say he won't work on my vehicle. He said " I don't care about the customers anymore. It's my shop I don't have to work on your van if I don't want to. pick it up" All because my doors don't open. It was fine a month ago , it was fine on Tuesday when I called to confirm the appointment it was fine when I dropped it off this morning. But when Jim got in and saw the car he changed his mind. It's incredibly disappointing to be a valued customer two months ago , then to be to told to screw myself today. Jim was rude. read more

So I am from the San Francisco Bay Area where good, honest and skilled mechanics are hard to find. When I moved to the Hood River area 11 years ago I tried many mechanics on both sides of the Columbia River. None were especially bad but none of them offered great service and good prices and a friendly interaction and, most importantly, really great information about your cars problem and the options in making the repair. There guys are great and deliver service way beyond any other shop in the area! They even have a monitor showing a slide shows so you can see what different types of repairs look like so you know what you are paying for when you get a repair. read more

Mark's Auto Repair has been a longtime and very reputable part of the White Salmon, WA business community so I recommended Mark's to a friend. The repair need was a common problem and car was nearby but not running, Mark's quoted my friend about three+ times the cost estimate compared to the dealer quote. I understand that Mark's is under new management and the repair expertise still has a good reputation, but the new management falls far short of good judgment and business ethics. Buyer be ware! read more

I respect the owner of Mark's Auto Repair. Too many times do you get a mechanic who fills you with fluff, but this one is straight up and honest. Not only that he is more than willing to give information. great buisness, great service, great prices. read more
