Freeman (1948-1992), the former…read more executive director of the Providence Foundation, where he was committed to revitalizing the downtown Providence business district. It's located next to the Hotel Providence and across from Grace Church, so it's a nice place to relax when you are shopping on Westminster street. The Park is just a few hundred square feet in size, but it contains a distinctive fountain sculpture with benches and tables spread across it. These features along with the identity that the Robert E. Freeman Park name represents have created opportunities for surrounding business and allowed it to cultivate a great deal of activity. Many events have taken place in the park as well as a central meetup place for many groups.

Corliss Park is situated in the Wanskuck neighborhood of Providence, in the city's north side, near…read morethe campuses of both Providence College and RI School for the Deaf. The park was named for George Corliss who invented the Corliss steam invention in the 1850s. A steam engine factory once stood a few blocks away where Home Depot currently resides. In addition to the 0.3 mile walking path, Corliss Park contains a playground, ball fields, handball court, tennis courts, basketball courts, new outdoor fitness equipment, and a community garden. I have been here a few times walking on the easy wooded path, relaxing in the area. Very shady in the summer time. The RIPTA 50 bus stops one block away from the park near the corner of Douglas Avenue and Corina Street.

Enter the walkway from Dyer St and on your right, cross the newly opened little bridge parallel to the river. You are now on the Urban Coastal Greenway to Point St. Park. Or, walk straight, cross the pedestrian bridge over the river, turn right and follow the walkway to a new open greenspace. Either way, these new segments of the East Coast Greenway bring green spaces, places to bike, walk, meet up, and be with nature by a running river. There are plans to bring even more food vendors to the park during warm months on the west side of the river by Dyer St. This is in addition to the food trucks that park on the east side by the pedestrian bridge already. Beer? Coffee? Music? Snack? This park is becoming the place to be.

Currently, The Guild PVD Beer Garden and various food trucks are there from May to October. There is also an ice cream vendor. The park connects with Point Street Park. The whole area is beautiful and well kept. A fun place to take a stroll, get some food nearby since it's central to everything, or food from the food truck, beers, and ice cream for dessert. When the weather is nice, this park is a great place to visit with beautiful views of the river and cityscape.

Touro Park is within easy walking distance of the main Newport drag. For those seeking a bit of respite from the madness, it's the perfect getaway.

I have tried to locate exactly who is responsible for this land, checking with both the town West Greenwich town website, and the State of Rhode Island website, neither of which identifies itself as the care taker so I am unable to provide a web address for more information. That said, this place just wowed me. We lived in the actual desert at one time (AZ) and this spot is more like the dunes in SoCal than the high desert of Tucson. It's a bunch of sandy dunes undulating under the blue sky. Surrounded by woodlands, it's hidden from the road. A quick look up on the satellite map shows this is a spot for winter sledding. Sorry I missed that as a kid. First off, there are two locations: one is located on the north side of Division Street nestled between Division and Rt 95. The other is on the south side of Division Street, listed as the West Greenwich Sand Dunes. While exploring this area one bight autumn day, we came across a group of military personnel, practicing their 'jumping out of helicopter' skills. That was a very good time and there were quite a few people who brought their lawn chairs to enjoy the show, camera's in hand. We wandered around as best we could, trying to stay out of the way of the jumpers (they had targets on the ground they were supposed to land near, so this was pretty easy to do) and have returned again and again to explore more of this area and the surrounding Big River Management area woodlands. I'm sure this desert is part of said Big River Mgmt area of which you can easily find hiking information on line. The general area is popular with hikers, walkers, bikers and runners. Seriously, if you are a fan of the desert, are new to RI, or just never knew there was such a thing in this state, you have got to stop by some fine day and take a walk around. It's like being at the beach, minus the water.

A very ancient park with…read more an unfortunate moniker. The hill that makes up most of the 30 or so acres of Miantonomi Park has been used by humans for a long, long time. It's named after the great sachem of the Narragansetts and according to legend the tribe used it for a lookout and as a place to hold religious ceremonies. When the English arrived and stole the land from the Narragansetts in the 17th century they erected a small watch tower and later put in some fortifications. The hill does have some nice views of the east passage of Narragansett Bay. Then in around 1920 the town erected a stone tower as a memorial to the men and women who fought in WW I. A nice gesture but unfortunately the tower has a decidedly phallic shape when viewed from a distance and is very obvious when first arriving in Newport once over the Pell Bridge. This of course led to a tsunami of scurrilous and prurient nicknames. People that have lived in the area for many years might not recognize the name Miantonomi Park but will immediate know the place if called by one of it carnal monikers. The tower is presently undergoing renovations and cannot be entered until the work is completed. The park has several nice playgrounds and is a good spot for sledding or dog walking. It's certainly safe enough the day but can be a bit scraggly after dark. Not the greatest park for a hike but a pleasant place for a view of the tower or bay. I have a feeling the great sachem Miantonomi would get a chuckle if he saw the tower they decided to erect on his hill. A very ancient park with an unfortunate moniker.

This is a hard place to review since it isn't actually open to the public. The center is a…read moremagnificent property on Greenwich and Apponaug cove. It serves the Masonic community and local youth programs. The grounds have several service oriented programs. The pool is used weekdays by youth service organizations like boys and girls clubs. I have been to Country Clubs that don't approach the standards that they maintain. The grounds are extremely well maintained and the views are spectacular. The staff is helpful and attentive to the grounds and the guests. The management is exceptional. They also provide good job experience for local high school and college students in the summer season. More than once I have just biked down with a book and just relaxed for a few hours. I can't have a negative thought about the facility and the services that they provide for the community. They are amazing.

I also love that it has like that secured entrance. It has a little walkway where there's like one gate you secure it then you walk and then there's another gate. Definitely better for safety.
