A park with a big…read morerock Dighton Rock State Park is named for the famous 40 ton rock that is now located at the park. The huge glacial rock was originally found in the Tauton River but moved to a small museum in the park a while back. The rock has strange petroglyphs on it whose meaning and even origin is very controversial. The rock was known and discussed as far back as the early 17th century and most scholars now believe they were carved by Natives Americans for unknown and forgotten reasons. Of course various other theories like Phoenicians, Vikings, Chinese, Portuguese and the ubiquitous aliens also are tossed around. Like an intelligent species is going to travel bezillions of light years to write on a rock. Beside the famous and enigmatic rock the park has about 100 acres of roads, trails and a pleasant picnic area by the river. Not enough room for any serious hiking but a nice place for dog walking or a stroll through the woods. Unfortunately the museum is only open by appointment so the rock is usually hidden away. However the rest of the park is a nice place for a picnic or to relax. We will probably never know what the glyphs on the rock mean but even without the big and curious rock the park is a pleasant place to explore.

There are benches along the way to rest at. I really enjoyed the beautiful views of the Narragansett Bay. There are some educational signs along the way, remnants of the old amusement park, and a fishing pier. There was ample parking when we went. There are paths to the water; I like the cute little hidden beach off the path. Overall, a great spot to take a walk and get some steps in!

I used to watch the horseshoe crabs here when I was little! The carousel is very nice. When I was younger they had a delicious cheap clam shack with good clam cakes and chowder- that is now replaced by Dune Brother's. I haven't tried this location- it's definitely not cheap but I'm sure it's delicious. Great place to come for physical activities or just to relax. Family friendly fun for EVERYONE! I've seen deer, turkey, flocks of geese, rabbits lots of wildlife. Dogs aren't allowed because it's a protected area. One of my favorite places to go.

At over 70 acres, this wildlife refuge is situated on a parcel of land that comprises Barrington's…read morehistoric Nockum Hill. A beautiful outdoor space any time of the year; there are a number of trails to peruse this mix of coastal wetland filled with marshes, fields, forest, and farmland. There is a small parking area on George Street just as the road starts to curve. A small sign marks the entrance to the first trailhead. Named for a Barrington native and prominent naturalist, the trails here meander through the various landscape. A couple off-shoots give you access to areas like a small boardwalk area that extends into the upper marshlands. Several of the fields have birdhouses erected that attract all kinds of species. I believe I caught a couple views of some bluebirds during my time here. And geese. So many geese. Another trail delivers you to the sandy shores of the Hundred Acre Cove. Really beautiful in January when I visited, all iced over. This beach is a nesting area for the diamondback terrapin. There is a park bench on this shoreline to soak in the views. Of note, there is a seemingly out of place pistol range on site for the Barrington Police which is very well-marked for safety. All-in-all, a pleasant place to get outside.

This cute little square in the Fox Point section of Providence is known to many locals and…read moreresidents as a nice little place to relax while walking in the area. Fenner Square's name commemorates Rhode Island's 4th Governor Arthur Fenner and his son, Rhode Island Governor and Senator James Fenner. Initially known as "What Cheer Farm," the Fenner estate extended from Hope Street and Power Street to the Seekonk River in the early 17th century. Close to the park was a horse stable and the workers there would walk the horses around the triangular plot of land, which was then known as "Heater Park" (Preservation RI). Fenner Square had fallen into disrepair a few years ago...then about 5 years ago, a group of neighbors wanted to bring the surrounding community together and transformed it into the picturesque gathering place that it is today. They started weeding and pruning, creating space for the roses. They added a brick path and with help from the city's tree planting program, created shade for sitting. With a bucket brigade from a nearby house, the neighbors creatively figured out a way to water the plants without a formal water source. Since then, painted stones and thank you letters have cropped up at the park. It is an unexpected encounter for the ordinary passersby. Couples will sit on the benches and occasionally the neighbors will host community gatherings throughout the summer. A scenic plaza at the intersection of Governor and Williams streets, now Fenner Square is the perfect spot for a pleasant stroll or outdoor picnic. We have enjoyed many lazy afternoons here.

I did not know the State of Rhode Island has it's very own Desert! Seriously, we have lived here…read morefor over a decade and I am just now finding this out? I have tried to locate exactly who is responsible for this land, checking with both the town West Greenwich town website, and the State of Rhode Island website, neither of which identifies itself as the care taker so I am unable to provide a web address for more information. That said, this place just wowed me. We lived in the actual desert at one time (AZ) and this spot is more like the dunes in SoCal than the high desert of Tucson. It's a bunch of sandy dunes undulating under the blue sky. Surrounded by woodlands, it's hidden from the road. A quick look up on the satellite map shows this is a spot for winter sledding. Sorry I missed that as a kid. First off, there are two locations: one is located on the north side of Division Street nestled between Division and Rt 95. The other is on the south side of Division Street, listed as the West Greenwich Sand Dunes. While exploring this area one bight autumn day, we came across a group of military personnel, practicing their 'jumping out of helicopter' skills. That was a very good time and there were quite a few people who brought their lawn chairs to enjoy the show, camera's in hand. We wandered around as best we could, trying to stay out of the way of the jumpers (they had targets on the ground they were supposed to land near, so this was pretty easy to do) and have returned again and again to explore more of this area and the surrounding Big River Management area woodlands. I'm sure this desert is part of said Big River Mgmt area of which you can easily find hiking information on line. The general area is popular with hikers, walkers, bikers and runners. Seriously, if you are a fan of the desert, are new to RI, or just never knew there was such a thing in this state, you have got to stop by some fine day and take a walk around. It's like being at the beach, minus the water.

The Ephraim Hunt Ministerial Land is a conservation area maintained by the Rehoboth Land Trust that…read moreoffers several well maintained pathways through the local woodlands. At approximately 64 acres, this land is a quiet, peaceful place to stretch your legs. Tucked away on Pond Street, there is a dirt parking lot that allows several cars to pull in off the road. The land was purchased by the Rehoboth Land Trust when the Congregational Church at the center of town required funds to repair their sanctuary ceiling and steeple. Wanting to maintain the land as undeveloped, this area remains open to the public to soak in the sights and sounds of nature. Hunting is allowed on the property in-season so be sure to take precautions, as appropriate. Swamps, old fields, brooks, and a high knoll mark the land. A map of the area greets you when you pass through the main gate, though I feel like there were more trails than what was pictured. All-in-all, there are only so many ways to go so its hard to get lost. There are some ups and downs and a lovely little boardwalk that helps you traverse some of the wetlands. The trails were very well maintained and easy to traverse - the blue to orange path gives you a nice loop through the land. The furthest end of the loop skirts the Rehoboth Village Cemetery if you want to make a quick detour.
