I want to start by saying I love my tattoo. It's beautiful and above and beyond my expectation. However, the artist I had was a different story. It felt very impersonal to me and the artist made comments making me feel like i was being snotty when talking to my mother , who came with me for support and when I said it was painful(mind you it was my first tattoo and I didn't know what to expect) she made continuous comments along the lines of she could just stop and that I could just leave since I put myself there, this came off to me that she didn't want me there as a client to begin with. She also had said it wasn't that painful thus making me feel like my emotions where invalid. I know I don't have a high pain tolerance and everyone is different but to me this made my experience not worth it and I'm not sure I plan to go back to this artist. *Edit* I have received an apology. Two of them are three star reviews - one form a woman with an absolutely gorgeous fucking tattoo, who actually acknowledges that the service, artist, and end result were all 5 star quality- then takes issue with the concept that "you get what you pay for." Her tattoo is amazing. And it cost her money. Yeah, duh. The other is from an adult who is super bummed that no one wants to tattoo his fifteen year old child. So, while I'm probably not going to tell you anything you can't find out from the other 49 reviews, I did just save you trying to figure out why this near universally recommended shop has 4.5 stars instead of 5. I like research. I like referrals. I like analysis and statistics. I'm a little neurotic, a little controlling. And I can be critical, as evidenced above. When I called pretty much every day starting a week before my appointment to check on the progress of my proof, the girls up front were endlessly kind and patient. And that's hard. I know because I also sometimes talk to super anxious control freaks in my line of work - and they can be a bit annoying. I know I'm a little annoying, but I was never treated with anything but compassion. Kenny even sent me the proof midway through to put me at ease. I chose Kenny after seeing a tattoo he'd done on his sister's arm. I do that a lot, ask random strangers who did their tattoo work or their manicure or their perfect balayage. Sitting in the chair, I marveled at other artwork he'd completed, sketches, a water color. Holy shit, you know? I get that it's a matter of personal taste, but you should feel that way about the person you let draw stuff on you that will exist in perpetuity. You should think that person is a phenomenal artist. And then you should bear in mind that with any good artist, it takes a little time to get in for an appointment. Be patient. This is not an emergent situation. You don't have a yeast infection, you just want a tattoo. I waited twice for such an appointment. Because I couldn't very well just trust a new person. I wanted a trial tattoo first, something a bit smaller, something I had complete control over. I wanted to get a sense of how I felt when this person was holding an electric needle shoving gun thingy near my body - because, you know, you want to feel safe, you want to feel at ease, and also, if you're a sweet pasty white girl with only two tiny tattoos and a demeanor people sometimes mistake for prissy, you want to know that this person isn't going to make you feel tres uncool. Or however you maybe imagine incredibly talented artists might make you feel. I'm just saying that, like, a relatively large, personally designed tattoo isn't exactly a first appointment thing for me. You do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Through all of this, Kenny was amazing. He is unassuming, but confident, always humble and kind. He checked in with me, took breaks when necessary and answered every single totally anxious question about whether or not different places or techniques hurt more than others, why there were tongue depressors, and whether or not it was okay to start wearing clothes that would touch my new tattoo within a couple days. When it was all said and done, I left simultaneously exhausted and giddy and carrying a goody bag of everything I would need to take care of my precious new tattoo - including giant medical bandages and even wipes to remove the adhesive once they came off. read more

Hands down the best tattoo shop I have ever been to. Everything from setting up the appointment to the attention to detail with aftercare was as good as it gets. Marked does things differently, and in this case different is GOOD. I initially contacted the shop via email to request a consultation for a tattoo I wanted to get, I described the tattoo and sent reference pictures (all of which you can do super easy through their website) and anxiously awaited a response. The next day I got a phone call from the shop, btw, this shop has desk people, super awesome, dedicated customer service which I'm sure gives the artists more time to do their work, and makes it super easy to schedule. I dealt with Natalie who set me up with an artist who matched up with what I was looking to have done, she set up a day and time that worked with my schedule to come in for a consultation. At the consultation I got to meet my artist, Parker, who asked me some questions about my ideas, he had a folder with my email and the reference pictures I had sent in, which was super cool and professional. He kinda told me what would and wouldn't work, and confirmed with me what exactly I was looking for. From there we set up a date for the work. I'm not gonna lie, this was the only bummer, my appointment was 6 weeks out. In my previous experiences I had to wait maybe 1-2 weeks, but I am SO glad I decided to go for it, it was worth the wait and I would now gladly wait twice as long. I put down a $100 deposit and left with all the ants in my pants. 6 weeks later I came back for my appointment, signed the papers and took a seat. Natalie offered me a complimentary cold beverage from their mini fridge, this bad boy was stocked AF with sodas, Gatorade, sparkling water, bottled water, beer, you name it. Moments later Parker emerged with his preliminary drawing. I was SO happy with the design. He had taken my idea and turned it into an awesome piece. He blew it up a bit to fit my arm and placed the stencil. The next 2.5 hours flew by and before I knew it my throbbing arm was adorned with some badass work. I decided on the spot that I needed some finger tats which he happily blasted on at the end. Parker did an amazing job, it is my best tattoo by far, out of 13 or so others. I will never go to anyone else, period. I cannot recommend this place enough. The prices are more than justified for the quality of work and I have never had a shop give me a care package with specialty soap and ointment. I will admit that I was kind of weirded out by the sterile bandages but I followed the rules, and I have never had a tattoo heal so beautifully. No scabbing, no terrible flaking and peeling. There was some minor flaking after the 3 days of bandaging but it was minimal, and it looks so good. tl;dr Super clean shop with a different vibe than the usual. Friendly desk people, super talented artists. Tattoo was free of scabbing, blowouts, and had clean straight lines. Follow the aftercare, you wont regret it. read more

I cannot praise this place enough from being welcomed, offered a water, beer, etc during my ink time and being in a great atmosphere. I drove 2 1/2 hours to Reno and had been sitting in the studio for twenty minutes after my appointment time when JP called in sick. While I completely understand that he can't control that he was sick, I cannot grasp why he would wait until 11:30 to call in, when the shop opens at 10:00. Or AT LEAST call a little bit before your client's appointment, not nearly half an hour after it's supposed to start. I had spent almost $100 in gas and wasted my 18th birthday to go down to Reno, so when the shop opened on Tuesday I called to let them know that I wasn't going to drive down there for the appointment I had rescheduled. I asked for my deposit back, and the woman at the front desk told me they can't return any deposits. I had received multiple emails before my first appointment stating, "Any deposit on file will be subject to forfeit and a new deposit will be required to reschedule if you cancel/reschedule less than 48 hours from your appointment." I had called 3 weeks before my new appointment so clearly my deposit shouldn't have been forfeited. After the receptionist said she couldn't find my deposit and we went back and forth for awhile, she finally returned it back to me. While JP's art did look really good, I'm just not going to trust him or Marked Studios with something going on my body for the rest of my life. read more

She is welcoming and helpful and will get you all set up and your questions answered. I have had two smaller pieces done by Mose and they still look great after 2 years. I had a koi half sleeve done by Kenny this week. Kenny is a super talented and chill guy. He is easy to talk to and I loved his quiet excitement for designing and creating tattoos. Kenny was accommodating when I needed a quick break and was wonderful at answering a bunch of questions I had while we collaborated on the design. I really like the vibe of the Studio... Even when you first walk in it is obvious how professional they are because ypu are instantly welcomes and greeted. They even give tours and explain how they do consultations. You pay by needle time and that is not including breaks if you need them, while most tattoo shops in Reno make you pay by the colors you use or the size. I went it and payed exactly how much I was expecting so they are not overpriced. My artist was Kenny Tavener and again there is nothing bad I can say about him. I had a 5 hour session and while it hurt I felt constantly motivated to finish it by Kenny and all the other artists, Natalie, and the manager. Not once did I feel like I didn't belong and it's easily rhe best expierence I've ever had. They are always asking if yoy need anything or if there is anything they can do for you. They have heated blankets, drinks, and delicious suckers. You can tell they understand that tattoos Hurt and what you to be comfortable the whole time you get one. They answered all my questions and we're able to continue a conversation so I never felt like I couldn't talk to them or Kenny. I easily recommend this place to anyone looking for a GREAT tattoo. I got several emails about my upcoming appointment and reminders. The day finally came- I filled out the necessary forms. My artist was running late but came out several times to update me. Shaun was sensitive to my fears, nervousness and made me feel extremely comfortable. He checked on me several times during my application and explained what he was doing during each step. Almost every tattoo shop I've ever graced with my presence, and I've been to a quite a few (my prim and proper appearance is all a facade), has been pretty scurry. You know what I mean-unsmiling, burly front desk women who look like they want to rip your pansy smile right off your face with their spiked Doc Martens, unfriendly tattoo artists who can barely grunt in reply, and questionable sanitation practices (I'm pretty sure answering the phone with your gloved hand, that is supposed to be as sterile as possible, and then going back to your tattoo is considered bad practice). Well, if you are a wimp like me, and you don't like subjecting yourself to uncomfortable tattoo parlor experiences, but you like to be tattooed, look no further. Marked Studios is where it's at! From the first phone call to walking out with my fresh tattoo, I received nothing but the best in customer service. When you email or call, the women who run the front desk respond immediately and in a friendly and professional manner. I really can't say enough about how nice these women are (I feel terrible that I don't recall their names). Marked Studios requires a consultation before tattooing. At first, it seems like an unnecessary annoyance, but when you consider they are doing it so their artists can deliver their customers with the highest quality work of art possible, it's just the first step in what I would call a "spa experience". Once your consultation is complete (mine took, literally, five minutes), you're scheduled for the soonest available time. This might be considered annoying to those who just want to be spontaneous with their tattoo-getting, but I can speak from experience-spontaneity + tattoos = many years of regret. Allow your artist time to personalize your piece, and don't think you'll be happy with a tattoo you didn't spend time thinking about and perfecting. When I arrived for my tattoo, I was greeted by the friendly receptionist and was asked if I wanted something to drink. This reminded me so much of the high end service you get at beauty bars. It was a simple, but extremely appreciated gesture. My tattoo artist, Parker, was great. He was a jokester, as the first cupcake drawing he showed me had a face and was holding a beer. It was a reject drawing and he thought he'd have fun with it. When I realized it was a joke and not the final drawing, his joke made me loosen up and I was that much more happy to see the gorgeous cupcake he drew for me. Sanitation seemed excellent. My friend was tattooed right before me and we watched the assistant prep the space for my turn, and I can say my OCD was pleased. The actual tattoo experience was pleasant (well, as pleasant as it can be with a needle jabbed continuously into your skin). On our way out came my most favorite part-I was given a care package in a gift bag! Never before has a tattoo shop provided me with aftercare products. This was that last piece that took it from a four star experience to a five star experience. I felt pretty happy and glamorous walking out with my gleaming (well, underneath the bandage) tattoo and fancy pants swag. I really appreciated not having to make a guess about what after care products would be best. Also, it was a huge bonus that I didn't have to make an additional purchase for these items. I loved my experience at Marked and I will be back for a more in-depth piece. I can't wait! read more

I recently got a long-awaited tattoo by Kenny after being referred here by a friend. This is not your typical Reno tattoo shop; appointments are booked out far in advance (I waited a few months due to the requested artist's vacation time), and those seeking a quick 'walk-in' appointment are out of luck. The foyer of the building serves as an interface to greet clients, assess the most appropriate artist prior to booking appointments, and to provide a level of privacy between the staff and the patrons. The vibe here is very professional, and I was happy to deal with a longer waiting period in exchange for a well-oiled appointment process. I checked the website to find the artist well-versed in the type of design I was after, and everything is laid out in a helpful manner. Certain artists here have niches, though some might want to stray and think outside the box. Kenny has done excellent watercolor work without black lines, which is what I was seeking, MacKenzie's specialty is fine stippling and line work, and Mark (the owner) is best at hyper-realistic creations. My first appointment was a consultation, where Kenny first asked a simple question, "WHY do you want this tattoo?" Catches you off guard, but probably prevents a lot of regretable permanent decisions. We discussed the design, which was a reworking of several elements I liked, and he asked to have some creative freedom to make it his own. The consultation was $100, but this deposit goes toward the cost of your tattoo at a later date. The tattoo itself took a little over 2 hours, and was reasonably priced for the amount of time and energy expended. Kenny did a fantastic job, was kind to talk with, and was the most gentle artist I have encountered, in terms of being jabbed repeatedly with needles. I had a question about receiving a proof of the final design a day or two before the appointment, just to get a preview of my vision plus Kenny's, and Mark responded immediately to answer my questions. My wife and I came to Marked on a friend's recommendation to get our first tattoos. Skipping to the end of the story for those with short attention spans, we were both absolutely thrilled with the work we got and really enjoyed working with everyone at Marked. For those who want details--We set up an appointment online, and generally described what we wanted to whoever gets the emails--I think it was Natalie, one of the floor managers, but might have been Noel. Based on what we were looking for, she set us up with Parker (we both wanted to involve some watercolor in our work, and he enjoys working with watercolors). We had an initial consult with the artist, told him what we wanted and where, and he got going on the artwork. They charge a $100 deposit for the work to progress, but it is applied to the final product. Our appointment to have the work done was set for about 6 weeks out, if that is any indication of how in-demand these artists are. When the big day came, we were treated respectfully, even though we were newbies, and like a lot of other reviewers have said, the shop is impeccably clean and private. Parker was a blast to spend a couple hours with, and with the lively conversation, time flew right by. As far as price, don't let the $200/hour price tag scare you. Time is measured at the needle, meaning that you are only billed while ink is actively applied. I spent over two hours in the chair, but the work was billed at 103 minutes.
