On this day, I had a special cutlet sandwich with a pop-up of influencer Kimono Mama's delicious sauce! The sweet and spicy sauce was crazy delicious and very satisfying in a nostalgic way. Kimono Mama also served the restaurant with great care. It seems that the sauce is also available at Whole Foods. We went there as soon as the cafe opens in the morning because limited quantity ,, but there was already a huge line. But it went smooth and we got yummy sandwich and matcha drinks. + The backyard was comfortable, and I would like to go back to try the original one next time. I have been stalking this venue *(the brownstone) for a while and finally I got a chance to visit. Though I really like the atmosphere, the venue *(brownstone) has a inconvenient lay out. They host weddings all the time but I can't see how, with a large guest count, people won't be bumping into each other constantly. For a wedding, I think this place *(the brownstone) will need a little more decor to give it a little more opulence, But the space isn't huge so it won't break the bank. I will probably go back to try the food someday. The menu looks really good. *Just to be clear I visited both Maison May Vanderbilt cafe and Maison May Dekalb brownstone.

Working over email with the event coordinator, Kat, was very easy and the staff when we arrived were more than accommodating. Jen and Valeria made sure everything was perfect, whether they were assisting with decorations, dedicating a dessert table, or gently moving our timing along. The food was excellent and they made sure to take of the bride and make modifications to the menu for her due to a gluten allergy. I personally had the steak sandwich, which was excellent, and the sweet potato muffin. I don't make a habit of eating gluten free baked goods, because luckily it's not an issue I have to deal with, however that sweet potato muffin is still in my mind. It was superb. It came with a maple butter and a jam and was just so moist and delicious. The fact that it's a no tipping establishments is an added bonus. The only thing that left a bit of a weird taste in my mouth was that I was told they couldn't reserve a space in the garden for our party, because they didn't have a phone number to contact us with. Having been in contact via email, I would have readily responded to an emailed confirmation, had I received one, but it seemed strange that they would give up so easily. I suppose I should count myself lucky that it seemed like a slow day and there was plenty of space available in the dining room.

So when I heard this place in Park Slope had a full bar without a drop of alcohol in it, I got very excited. So back on May 2nd, early afternoon, my wife and I popped in and had a few cocktails while we did the Saturday crossword puzzle. We adored it! Great kinda art deco-ish vibe, very "detective noir." The bartender was excited and talked a lot about the products available. We spent roughly $60 or $70 and had a fantastic time. Today, Saturday August 8th, we thought we'd do the same thing since we were in the neighborhood. It was almost as if we experienced two different restaurants. My wife needed to use the restroom, so she did that first and sat down at the bar. Immediately, the person behind the bar told me "We aren't doing drinks, just food." I was then told that cocktails don't start until 4pm (which is wild, because it was around 1pm when we were there back in May!). I wasn't offered a list of drinks that were available, just told "No drinks." The bartender then added "Everything we have is zero proof," as if I was going to be upset about that. Of course I already knew this -- that's why I was there! The whole experience was extremely unwelcoming. At that point my wife came back and was looking over the brunch menu. I had wanted to leave, but she decided on a hibiscus tea... which it took her about five minutes to order, because we couldn't find anyone to take our order in spite of there being three front-of-house employees and only four patrons in the entire place. Ultimately I had a club soda (which was $4 for 7 ounces!) and we did the crossword and left. So we spent about $15 total, instead of the $60 we spent back in May -- and which we were planning to spend today on two rounds of NA cocktails. I worked service industry for a long time (over a decade), and the vibe I get from this place is that no one in management has done the service industry time that it takes to know how to run a place like this well. It has that feel of top-down lack of experience. It's a shame, really, because this place has so much potential and there's not really anything like it in the neighborhood. But as it is, they are basically just walking away from all the money we'd gladly spend there if the place made any sense or did a good job of being, y'know... a bar and restaurant. One note: I'm attaching an image of my receipt, because I have noticed the owner likes to claim that reviews are by people who went to some other restaurant and were just confused about Mockingbird.
