Have I finally found the promised land of fish tacos in Tucson? I think so…read more La Palma may be the closest experience in Tucson to the Baja fish tacos I could find throughout Southern California. Their big white food trailer is topped with a large blue tarp that shades a comfortable seating area. The location is kiddy corner from a gleaming white church at the opposite side of the intersection. In a short time, La Palma has become my go-to for fish tacos because the quality is consistent and they know how to dress the tacos with the right combination of flavors. Additionally, they make a mean horchata that compliments the meal perfectly. I'm probably in the wrong crowds because I have not heard other people mention La Palma while praising quite lesser places. I don't get it. All I can say is that for those SoCal folks who are passing through Tucson and are hankering for good fish tacos, pull up to La Palma and be overjoyed. P.S. The folks here are very nice and welcoming.

Have eaten here maybe 6 times…read more Its a food trailer at a dirt lot on 22nd and 6th...gets real busy for lunch. Ambiance....not much to speak of, dining area is clean...3 stars. Service...superb, always feel welcomed, helpful and accomodating. 5 stars Food...interesting...some that i have had is stellar, some not. The breading on the fried shrimps is excessive, in my opinion. Just had the grilled fish quesedilla, and it was outstanding...cheese, garlicky, lots of fish..will have again...but I didn't care for the fish tacos. The cooked shrimp tostada is a winner 4 stars.

Not many places open on the 4th of July. Friend and I headed to El Merendero to eat, as they were…read moreopen. The same server (the same one every time I'v been there) greeted and seated us. It took awhile (it always does at this place) for the server to return to take our orders. There were maybe 10 customers in the place, so I'm not sure why everything takes so long here. Friend ordered a shrimp tostada; I ordered my usual liver platter. After an EXTREMELY long wait (at this point there only 2 other people in the place and they had been served their food), our food arrived. The tostada was delicious, very citrusy and crisp. It was served in a bowl with an orange colored broth that was really good. My liver platter was delicious as always, with a noticeably smaller portion of liver and a noticeably higher price. When we were done, we waited for the bill. We finally stood up to leave and the server immediately brought over the bill. I love the food here, but hate the long delays in every aspect of eating here.

Good but not great execution. The others in our party were happy with their dishes. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go here but it is on a list of best breakfasts in Tucson, so will try to make it next time for that. Was hoping for bunch today, but I think they stop serving breakfast at 11 am. That's better than McDonald's breakfast hours but don't show up at noon expecting chilaquiles. Get it together and get out the door earlier. Set your alarm and learn from my mistakes or you'll be having chicken fried steak instead of eggs, dammit.
