I wanted to do an ugly Christmas sweater drawing on my chest and Mario responded immediately. He gave me a price and set an appointment. I came in and he creatively drew in the design based on my rudimentary design ideas. It was the hit of the party and I won the Ugly Sweater Contest. I had a great experience with Mario. I wanted to get a simple piece, my childhood area code, on my inner right forearm and it totally exceeds my expectations. He had the templates - in various sizes - ready to try on when I arrived and was patient as I decided between sizes. He was efficient and, while no tattoo is painless, it was as pleasant as it could be. His shop is super cool - shout out to the blinged out stuffed bear - and the vibes are immaculate. So, I have been looking for an artist for a half-sleeve design and decided I would give Mario Ink a try at a smaller piece before commissioning him on the larger (more expensive) project. I purchased a 1hr Groupon special and figured this would be a perfect ice breaker. I was looking at having a simple design done on the inside of my arm about 4" (two-color). It seemed easy enough to me to get a feel for the establishment. I had my consultation yesterday and after showing Mario the design he stated it couldn't be done in an hour and I would need to purchase another hour to complete the tattoo. See the attachment and decide for yourself. He then added that it doesn't matter how much of the second hour is used, you still have to pay for the full hour. So, 1:05 minutes equates to a 2 hour tattoo. While I am not turned completely at this point, he then adds that he free hands designs on the skin and therefore I wouldn't be able to view a rendering beforehand. That's it, I'm out. In my opinion, his shop is using Groupon to attract customers and then attempts to charge them more by saying the tattoo couldn't be completed in the time allowed. This is not my first tattoo. On to the pricing. the Groupon states it is an hour tattoo valued at $159, however I paid $59 up front to Groupon. Mario informs me his shop rate is $200 an hour but will discount the price to $175 (plus the $59 I had already spent for the first hour). So a simple tattoo would have cost me $234+tip. Conversely, the 3hr Groupon deal was $399 discounted to $149. So, if I had purchased the 3hr tattoo it would have been cheaper? Bottom line, I cancelled the appointment and emailed Groupon his shady business practices. IF I get my money back, great. If I don't than at least all I am out is a $59 and not stuck with a (potentially) bad tattoo that I paid to much for. On a final note, seems to be more negative comments than positive ones, why is that? read more

Ashley is SO talented! 6 years ago my great-grandma died. I wanted to get a tattoo to commerate her but really wanted it to be good so I took years to think about what exactly I wanted and WHERE I wanted it. I feel like placement is always the hardest part for me. I found a tribal feather tattoo and fell in love with the idea. I wanted mine to be different that the one I found, but it was definitely the inspiration for my tattoo. My husband was getting a tattoo and showing me some of the artwork from the artist who was going to do it and low and behold to my surprise the artist (Ashley) doing his was the artist who did the tribal tattoo I was using as my inspiration. I got online and found a 3 hour Groupon for Mario Ink and knew everything was falling into place. I contacted Ashley to book an appointment. With the 3 hour Groupon and was informed that the 1st hour would be her drawing the idea out. I was very nervous about this, because I wanted to see it before I agreed to get it tattooed but since she did the one that was my inspiration, I agreed to their terms. I show up to my appointment and Mario calmly informed me that it wasn't on the schedule and re-scheduled another date for me. It was kind of a bummer, but Mario was calm and I've already waited so long..it was fine. Ashley and I continued to communicate and the day for my appointment finally came :-) I told her what I wanted and she drew it on. She made some suggestions that I loved and some that I didn't. I've found the most important thing when getting a tattoo is to speak up for yourself. They are professionals, but it will be on your body so if you don't like a suggestion they make, don't take it. My tattoo healed nicely, but I realized I wanted a couple details added to it. I contacted Ashley and she informed me she does a free 30 minute touch up session. I informed her of what I wanted to add and she was confident that it would fit within the 30 minutes. I scheduled the touch up session and got the extra details (that did fit within the 30 minutes). Bought a Living Social voucher for one hour of tattoo services. I had a tattoo done several years ago and wanted to do another for my birthday. I drove an hour to go to my consult, which was scheduled weeks in advance. The consult was done "curbside" because someone was in the shop. Didn't quite understand that when I made an appointment, but what ticked me off is that my voucher was refused because I am not a new client, and I was questioned whether I read the fine print on the voucher. The next day I went online to request a refund and noticed his rule is NOT on the fine print and LS allows you to buy 30 vouchers (not including gifted ones). I reached out to (texted) Mario who argued with me instead of apologizing! He offered to do one of my requests for a regular rate. I have wasted enough time on this but wanted people to be advised because LS won't let me review on their site following a refund request. I researched him a little more and found out not only does he do tattoos he also does body painting for major brands and events. So I had to schedule a appointment. I want to start off by saying I'm a very picky person and wouldn't just trust anyone tattooing my body. I had been in Mario and Dans shop prior to my tattoo for body painting on Halloween 2 years in a row before that. This past halloween Mario body painted me as an Avatar and added his own custom design to it... needless to say I don't know how I will ever top that "costume." It was such a fun process with a lot of energy in the room, I will continue to come back every Halloween. I love going to the shop! It's so sick on the inside. They put so much detail into every little thing there. There's so any cool antiques to look at, that Mario gave his own little touch to. It's also really nice because it's a private shop so you really get the one on one experience and his full attention on whatever it is your getting done. They also throw a lot of tattoo parties which our friends have a lot of fun with I highly recommend it! Most Recently, about a month ago now. Mario gave e a new tattoo. It was a compass tattoo on my upper spine right below my neck. I couldn't be more happier it turned out GREAT! He really took his time and communicated well about what I wanted. He had spent 2 hours on my tattoo and then we went back cause he wanted to add more to it and spent another hour on me.... and I'm way happier with the results! Purchased the 3 hour Groupon for $150 for this place. And was getting a pretty large tattoo, so spent an additional $350 for 2 more hours of service. Discussed the tattoo with Mario during a 15 minute consultation but none of the information seemed to be communicated with the artist. The tattoo was drawn on freehand with highlighter and so it is more unique but also lacks some of the detail that I desired. While my tattoo is ok and the session itself was fine & private, my issue was with the lack of professionalism. Tattoo artist was 30 minutes late to the appointment and was done 30 minutes early, but still asked for the full $350. I figured that was I was supposed to have a 30 minute follow up appointment for touch up work but it never happened because of last minute cancellations, on the part of the artist, and lack of communication. I had a great experience here. I bought the 3 hr youswoop deal and could not be happier. The studio has a great vibe with a ton of antiquities and interesting decor. Their dog Rocco is a big cuddle bug and welcomes you the second you walk into the shop. Ashley did my Ink. I brought in my own art work and she was very helpful with placement and sizing. This place I give no starts at all. Had purchased a one hour at too on Groupon for $59.00. Called to see if I could come in and have my tattoo done without having to make an appointment. First time I had called i had left a message and received no response. had also sent an email and no response. The second time I called someone had told me to go on the web site and make an appointment for a 15 min session to discuss my tattoo. Upon my arrival address nor Mario Ink did not stand out. Walk up to a gate that is locked and the whole outside of the building is all black. NOT very welcoming. Rang the Bell and talked to Mario through the metal bars that I had an appointment. Came in and was told right away that he would need my Groupon to be redeemed and to set up an appointment. Seemed like all he wanted was the money first and you as a customer last. GREAT START!!! :( You would think a person whom is going through Groupon is a person whom is looking for business, would be welcoming and make you feel like he is to serve you and make you tattoo experience the best it could be. Mario only talked about him self and his customer artwork. I was not gong in for any custom art work nor was I asking his to change the picture I had brought in to be altered in any way to his liking. I was happy with what I had chosen to begin with. Mind you this is all to be done in 15 mins. I was asked to email my tattoo to his website. I had mentioned to him redeeming my Groupon by the numbers, making an appointment and emailing my tattoo of choice all could have been done over the phone. Mario said to me if you don't want a tattoo here then you can go back to Groupon and see if you can get you money back but I doubt they would do that. He was very arrogant and talk like as if it was all about himself. As a customer you want to come in with the artwork of you chosen and have it done exactly that way. I traveled an hour for not even 15 mins, cause another two girls had arrived early for their appointment. They were taking up my time asking if they could come in and Mario turned them away on a below zero day telling them to come back in a half an hour because he had other appointments. I asked about my tattoo and questioned what would the size of my tattoo be for the hour purchased and Mario said that he would draw it up and it will look better than the picture. I said I didn't want anything better than the picture. I want exactly what is in the picture I had brought in. I asked him how long has he been in business and he replied 10 years. I said then you should know by now how big a tattoo would be and how long it would take. I was then told my time was up and there was nothing further to discuss. Was told I would receive and email with my appointment date and time. Was also told to email Mario a few day before to see what had been drawn up. I was sent an email they were going to free hand the design on me so this would take up at least 20-30 mins of my hour and if the time is up and the tattoo is not complete then I would have to make another appointment and come back or stay and pay for the time difference to have the tattoo finished. Time was coming near and I still had not received a conformation as to my set date and time. Sent emails and not response. Sent another one and finally received a response. Now it is understandable why his place is hidden and locked up like a prison on the outside. From all the negative comments I have been reading this all makes since now as to why the baa are there to protect himself from the unpleasant experiences, crappy work and angry people that have to walk around with a fucked up tattoo for the rest of their lives. These coupons are for first time customers or for a person whom has never had a tattoo before. This place gives the most crappy service I have ever seen before. The woman that also works there is very cold and very unwelcoming. They would be bubbly and a people person. Welcome you in and make u feel like your tattoo choice is a great choice and placement of the tattoo is your choice as well. I give this place no ratings and they suck majorly. Very in personal and Mario has an attitude that he is some artist at his work???? That is why you don't see any tattoos on his website. No work to compare too. I don't know where to start.. First, I went for a consultation in June, now in October I still couldn't get an appointment. I work two jobs so noon appointments will never work! Then, Ashley had to always be reminded what tattoo I wanted...HELLO I'm paying for an extra hour for custom work!! Still nothing completed...really?! Following, Mario told me it will be $125 per hour and now out of the blue it's going to be $150 per hour! His shop has awesome esthetics and it was a welcome surprise walking through the door. Many artists exude a sense of entitlement that smells so foul, you want to run in the other direction. This statement could not be farther from the truth when describing the studio owner - Mario. He was patient with me when I wasn't 100% sure on what I wanted, was very modest when talking about some of his other projects and took his time to make sure that my tattoo turned out AMAZING! Don't be alarmed by the exterior of the buidling, the studio is very clean and has more of an artist loft feel to it. There are some pretty cool jewelry pieces for sale as well, if you like vintage meets punk rock. The doctor's suggestion is to wait a little longer. Mario didn't feel unhappy because I couldn't get a tattoo right away. On the contrary, he gave me a lot of advice. This is probably the worst experience one could possibly have getting a tattoo. It is a cautionary tale about doing business with shady people. I paid $1500 for a sleeve in December 2013. I offered to pay half up front and half at the end but they insisted I have to pay in full before they begin. Almost 5 years later, I have been chasing them to finish it. Out of the 3 pieces they worked on, none of them have been finished! All my calls, texts, emails have been ignored and I am frankly fed up. Their excuse a year later was that they cut me a "deal" for the sleeve and therefore I am not a priority. I asked why that wasn't made clear BEFORE they collected the money? No answer. Almost 4.5 years later for one unfinished sleeve, if you can believe that! If you have a single tattoo that you can finish in one sitting, take the chance. I wish I could give 4.5 stars, oh well. I was really nervous about coming here (I had a Groupon) based on some negative reviews they had, but I was really pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is really relaxed and the shop is BEAUTIFUL, not only is it clean it's also nice to look at. Decor is top notch. Its also a private shop so you don't have a few people getting work done, just you. An extra bonus is the friendly dog (belongs to the owner) that greets you on occasion. I was very pleased with the work, I went in for simple script on my ribs. Mario had the great suggestion to change the placement and size of the tattoo and I'm so happy I listened, it looks awesome and it would of looked crappy otherwise. DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT GO HERE! MARIO CEJA is a DIVA who thinks his time is so valuable that he feels the need to mistreat customers. He clearly does not have a heart for his customers and is only looking to LURE people into his OVERPRICED, OVERRATED, WHACK ASS SHOP! He will lie about how long a piece will take and will give a ridiculous explanation as to why it will take so long just to go over the hour mark. Making it seem like he's such a MASTER artist that likes to take his time and add details you didn't ask for. I bought the Groupon for 3 hours but did not mention to him at the time I scheduled my consultation. At our consultation, I shared my ideas and he told me it shouldn't take more than 3 hours. He gave me an appointment 6 days after that consultation and charged a $40 deposit to "hold the slot". The day I arrived for my appointment, I told him I was going to pay with the Groupon voucher. His mood quickly changed! He immediately switched into this frustrated, annoyed DIVA! He told me I should've mentioned the Groupon before because he wouldn't have given me an appointment so soon. ANND... He could have given my "slot" to an actual paying customer. He swore he had to turn people away to accommodate me. He continued on about how he loses out on the Groupon because it's "such a deal for the customer but not the shop". Mario then gives me another consultation on the day I was supposed to get my tattoo. He begins to draw on my arm the design idea I had and start over explaining how it can't be done within 3 hours. He tells me it'll be at least 5 hours and that I will have to pay the hourly rate on top on the Groupon. He kept on drawing UNWANTED details on my arm saying this is how he works. His works is always freehand and that he may add more details to make the work look alive. FUNNY, he didn't mention any of that prior to finding out about the voucher. HMMMMM??? So, fast forward to today. I decided that I will not be returning to my follow up appointment and contacted Groupon for my refund on the voucher. I paid $159 for 3 hours. Really cheap. I know. Anyways, Groupon heard my complain and refunded me the money right away. I then contact Mario for a refund on my $40 deposit. He tells me it's non-refundable and that he will credit the $40 towards my next visit if I ever decide to return. WHAT?!?!?! LOL!!!! That didn't happen. He sent me my $40 after I replied to that STUPID comment. This dude is using Groupon to attract customers and then switching up the game. He will make it seem like Groupon is against his business and will act as if he doesn't like the traffic. I didn't plan on leaving a negative review. That is not what I usually have time for. But after dealing with this NUT today and reading so many similar stories I just had to chime in. Whether you're a Groupon shopper or an actual paying customer, DON'T support this DIVA! I purchased the Groupon coupon for a 3 hour session despite all of the 'bad' reviews I read on this website. I decided to look at the work that was previously done by both Mario and Ashley and I was surprised. Their work was far from horrible and I was inclined to try this place out- and I'm glad that I did! Ashley was my tattoo artist and she did a phenomenal job. I originally had a placement in mind, but she helped me figure out an even better spot to place my tattoo so it would flow with my body shape. My tattoo was extremely detailed and she did everything the way that I wanted. I also really love the private tattoo studio; it really makes the experience so much better. You can watch TV, listen to music, etc. Rocco is also a very friendly dog and adds to the shop. I have two tattoos done by MarioInk, specifically by Ashley. She is amazingly talented, friendly, and professional. The first tattoo I had done was just script that I had written out myself, so there was nothing too extensive there. The second I had done was a really enjoyable collaboration. I gave Ashley my idea written out and also gave her photos that were inspirations for my piece. When I came in for the appointment the drawing she had made up was even better than I had imagined! I had a fantastic experience at Mario Ink. This is my 13th tattoo, and first by Mario, he was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. I wanted a cover up, and brought my idea and sketch to him during my consultation. I did take advantage of the $99 You Swoop 3 hour special. During our consult on November 26, 2013, I specifically requested that Mario do my tattoo. His first availabliity was 12/18, but that didn't work for me, so we set 1/8/14 for my appointment. When the day arrived for my appointment, I could not find the sketch of my original idea. My experience here was unlike any I've ever had at a tattoo parlor. Mario has an amazing eye and vision for a style of a tattoo for anyone. I had him look at possibly doing a touch up on a prior tattoo I received from another artist, he looked beyond that and saw and created this amazing chest piece on me. I'm mindboggled how this all came into play. Artists like him are hard to come by. Give him an idea you have and he will create something beautiful. He will not disappoint. I just got a great tattoo done at Mario Ink. The atmosphere is very chill because it is a one person shop. I just watched movies and sports on the big flat screen the whole time. My only thing negative to say about Mario Ink is with regards to scheduling. I was told that I was going to get the tattoo done in one sitting, but when I got there I was only tattooed for 3 hours because of a "scheduling conflict." So i scheduled to come back a week later where I was supposed to get the rest of the tattoo finished, but again I was only in the chair for 3 hrs for the same reason as before. Came back a 3rd time and got it finished. But if you are going to tell someone that you will be doing a whole large tattoo in one day, do not schedule other people and basically kick the current person out... Not cool... The ink I got there is great and rather large, and I love it. read more

Mario and Ashley were incredible. My 7 friends and I were in town on vacation and wanted to get a smaller tattoo. We stopped in early in the day and chatted with Mario about what we wanted. He was super accommodating and was able to get us in the same day. When we arrived they created a wonderfully hospitable environment that lasted throughout the entire tattoo process. Ashley did an amazing job on our tattoos ; her line-work is incredibly clean. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone in the wicker park area. read more
