The overall aesthetic at Marine Layer is the opposite (Southern California colorful beach day bordering on lounge wear style). This is just a personal style preference of course. * Having said that, I did find a striped shirt for a vacation that seemed promising - 50% cotton/ TENCEL blend that was lightweight and comfortable. In reality it lacks structure, creases excessively even after steaming. Instead of the crisp, effortless drape you'd expect from a summer shirt it felt limp and unfinished. If I were to compare it to other brands it would be between Forever 21 and Old Navy quality. Not recommended. read more

What a great co company! Marine Layer has the best return/warranty policy out of all the clothing stores I shop at. I love their 6" Lined Sport & Swim Short and the Signature Crew Tee. Both items are extremely soft, comfortable, and stretchy. Plus if you ever have an issue with your Marine Layer clothing, just bring it back, no reasons, interrogations, or headaches. We were visiting on our way home to Honolulu and stopped into this quaint clothing shop in February. I found a tropical/ethnic bathing suit on a rack with others and asked if it was on sale like the others were marked. The nice man told me the price and I bought it instantly. Logan and I hang together probably about once a week at the Palo Alto store at this point. I find it difficult to describe the level of stylish, soft, dope AF, and beautiful that literally everything in this store is. The 365 day return policy is so kind and humane, and everyone who works in a marine layer (and I've been to all the Bay Area ones) is kind, honest, engaging, and cool. Might have found a future electrical engineering intern through an awesome ML employee in SF. They tell me when I am NOT pulling off a look, and when I slay. My boyfriend regularly says "marine layer is by far my favorite brand, god I wish we could buy stock and invest in them" and he's extra snuggly in the clothes I foist on him (which is secretly selfish). For the holidays everyone is getting marine layer. I'll be like a cheerful holiday Oprah "soft clothes for you! Coziness for YOU!!" What a cool concept to have everything all under one roof: clothing store, workshop, studio, office. They sell REALLY soft clothes and scarves. I bought one today and love it! I want one of their hoodies and one of their sun dresses next! I love that they kept the old Lumiere Theater sign out in front too. I stopped by here a couple weeks ago while in San Fran for interviews, in dire need of a tote bag or bag of some sort since my cross-body strap had broken the night before... and I had nothing to carry all of my random stuff in. I literally walked in at opening time with an arm full of things and struggling to hold them all. I asked the person working if they had cross bodies or simple bags... at first she said no... then she said wait a minute. She ran downstairs and came up with a single striped tote with PVU leather brown straps. It was all they had and on sale for 25 bucks! Couldn't have been more perfect. Not to mention it was hand-made in Haiti with all proceeds going to Haiti. Truly amazing! This lady saved the day... and in a way, saved my trip. I enjoy shopping at the Hayes Valley location at Christmas. Sales people are always helpful. Due to the virus, I did not want to shop in person, but I wanted the experience of having one of their sales people help me. I called and asked Dolly if I could shop using Face Time so I could actually see their clothing. She agreed!! I love Marine Layer as a brand and I really like the way they remodeled this store (I hadn't been in for about 18 months). Staff is friendly and the clothes are well made (and incredibly soft!), but the coolest feature by far is the mystery t-shirt vending machine for $20. Ok first of all, can I just say the straight college boy (in the gay world he's a total "twink") who works here on weekends is C-UUUUUTE? My friends and I are always gawking every time we come in (creepers we are, admittedly). Why wasn't he cast in Twilight? Anyway, everybody who works here is super nice and helpful so that makes me continue to come back, plus I love supporting a local brand. Oddly, I stumbled upon Marine Layer while shopping in Wicker Park Chicago (flew in for a few hours of fun--she's cosmopolitan) and was surprised I'd never seen the SF store. Anyway, now that I live just blocks away I stop here often. The clothes really are perfectly suited to the climate of the Bay Area and the fabrics are excellent. No, it's not ultra trendy, but the cuts are flattering and the look is ideal for day trips to Monterrey or Sunday brunches in The Mission. Effortlessly cool is how I'd describe Marine Layer. They make super comfortable clothes and are also made right here in SF. Unfortunately the shirt I purchased had to be returned because of size issue but they do offer a range for the most popular builds - ie smedium, medium, marge, large. Very easy to work with and the return was hassle free. I definitely recommend Marine Layer. A little pricey though. read more

I am fucking obsessed with these shirts. Back in May I was in SF for Bay to Breakers and casually mentioned to my friend I wanted to check out Marine Layer. Lo and behold, they had a friend that worked there (score!) Even though their 3-tee deal actually ended up being cheaper than the employee discount, knowing what I know now, I still would have payed full price. These are easily the most comfortable shirts I have ever owned. My only gripe is the neck has a tendency to strech out a little too much. This is, however, after about 5 months of overwear. Marine Layer clothes are exactly my style - well-made, great fitting, composed of uber-soft fabric, colorful, and super comfy. The bolder colors are nicely paired with lots of cozy neutrals, so you can definitely pick out an entire outfit. Just walking in I spotted two or three things I HAD to have. I love Marine Layer. I've been buying their merch for the hubs and myself for a few years. The quality is top notch, made locally and priced right. Today's visit to this location was a total letdown due to customer service. The hubs picked out a shirt and I went to pay for it. The gentleman working asked for name to see if I was in the system. He couldn't find it and wanted to add me and my email address so that could "send me my receipt." I said that it was okay, I'd take a printed receipt. I am over giving out my email address because I end up getting so many email marketing messages. He said that they don't give out printed receipts because they are trying to be green. That's cool and all, but I want a printed receipt without having to give my email address. My email address is worth $$$ and I don't want it out there. He assured me that he could check a box and it would opt me out of future mailings. Why should I believe him? Then, the girl working with dark hair (maybe the manager on duty) came over and started to argue the fact that there is no way that I have ever gotten a printed receipt from them. I told her that I thought it was kind of shoddy marketing and her reply was, "We just opened 10 stores this year, so we must be doing something right." The fact that she chimed in with a snarky remark just fired me up even more. They processed my credit card and then handed it back to me. I asked if they needed me to sign something and she said, "no." So let me get this straight....."you rang me up for something that I didn't have to sign for and since I wouldn't supply my email address, I didn't get a receipt?" "That's right!", she said. I have several of their shirts and love them but visited today and despite the same branding as before - made in USA (sandwich board outside still says that), lots of natural fibers - the shirts I bought last year which were US-made are now made in China, and all-cotton was all but absent (and no discernible price drop, not that that would have mattered). I drove an hour to visit and left empty handed. So disappointed. read more

Well made, simple clothing. Made in SF! The person working there was extremely nice and helpful with sizing and giving us information about the clothing, but allowed us to browse. Very good looking clothing and I couldnt help but touch everything because the fabrics felt so nice and soft! Most everything seemed to be in the $70-$100+ range but seemed worth the money given the quality and workmanship. I would have purchased a skirt but it was a bit too long. Two of the three girls working were laughing obnoxiously loud talking about how they are hungover from last night. One stated how she chugged a bottle of water raving. The other was telling a customer as they checked out how she saw Odesza (edm artist) last night and didn't go to bed till 4AM. The selection was pretty bad and everything looks like it was shrunk 3 sizes. Reminded me of Brandy Melville. They had a grey men's pullover with cross-stitching that was a spot on knock off of a Patagonia. Only difference was theirs was thinner, $150, and sure to wear out after 2-3 uses. Appears their original business model has slowly taken a beaten during growth. Too bad, ML used to have a lot of potential to produce quality goods, not just items that they hawk by yuppie marketing and "softness". read more

Not much difference from the Marina location: same decor, around the same level of selection (maybe smaller), and friendly & helpful staff. Still the same insanely comfortable clothing. I challenge you to go in there and NOT spend your first five minutes just feeling the shirts. I couldn't do it. I sent the rest of my time trying to part ways with different items so that I spend a stomachable amount (it's a tad on the pricey side, keep an eye out for sales online). It was harder than I anticipated. Not only are the clothes insanely comfortable, but they are also locally made in San Francisco , which makes you feel good about the purchase as well. They primarily stock your basics for men and women (t shirts, button ups, Henley's, hoodies) but also have some other miscellaneous finds (pajamas, dresses, rain jackets). Their staple is the hoodie for men and women. They have a website with free returns, so you can pick up things where ever you may be located. I've found that the clothes run slightly smaller than their size, but that may just be my experience. If you're on the edge, I'd say yo start a size up (Although they do have good tweener sizes like "marge" or "larger").
