after years of going to this restaurant today was definitely a upset. We sat at our table for about 15 minutes just to get menus and the finally she came and we ordered our drinks and food. Another 15 minutes to get our drink then we come to find out our order wasn't even put in.. I could understand if it was crazy busy. nope not until after we ordered! we waited 1 hour and 15 minutes . Food was very good. I enjoyed the biscuits and sausage gravy, not packed with sausage like I make it but reasonable. Biscuits were tender and gravy not pastey. I also really liked the eggs over easy, cooked perfectly! My date had the French toast and two over easy, she said it was very good. With skin on link sausages! Our group called ahead and they had a table ready for us when we got there. 11 hungry bikers were all very happy with the food and service. There was one server and one busboy, with several tables and another group of 8 that came in soon after us. I had a #10, opting for the Carne Asada Burto combo with rice and beans. I added a side of guacamole. I needed a to-go container for half my burro because it was HUGE. But it was also delicious. The server was amazing, she kept up with everything and the kitchen turned out great food in a surprisingly short time. My only criticism is the side of guacamole. Fun little Mexican restaurant-prices are very reasonable and they have good variety. Kids meals for $6 includes a drink are a good deal as they are huge portions too! (Picture of taco w/ rice & beans is a kids meal) - onion rings are seriously SO GOOD! Don't underestimate them at a Mexican diner ;) We had the carne asada special chimichanga and it is LARGE! Asada is tasty and juicy - they give you guacamole and sour cream with it so it's a good buy. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 quality of taco ground beef was subpar along with the hamburger as well. Still recommend if you're avoiding those items IMO. read more

Love the Arizona Mexican restaurants. Always in search of the ultimate chili rellano. I ordered a side chili rellano and carne asada. Chips were fresh & the salsa (mild) kicked really really good!! Rode by on our motorcycles and opted to try out this spot. AWESOME food!!! Their steer burger with bacon & cheese was really good. The burritos are delicious too. I visited Maria's for the second time in the past year.Tempe is my home and on the way to Safford I know there are amazing taco's waiting for me at Maria's. The atmosphere is quirky and mostly regulars eat there. You will be on Hayden " Time" so if you want excellent fast service. This is not the place. Yet the tacos and beans are amazing. Very friendly staff albeit slow and forgetful. The salsa and chips aren't WOW but they are very good! I would totally recommend Maria's if you know what to expect. read more

Who would've thought that such amazing food would come from such an easily-overlook-able spot. If you blink when passing through Hayden, you might miss Maria's. Thankfully, we didn't blink and did stop to eat. As a large group, we sampled a lot of the menu and everything was great. The menudo was (reportedly) great, the cheese crisps were delicious, the enchiladas satisfying, and the tacos were amazing--shredded chicken, carnitas, and beef. That's how you know your divy small town place is going to deliver. * A dimly-lit dining room * Bowls of chips served with seran wrap around them. Yes, the chips were placed in bowls, and then wrapped in seran wrap. Why? I don't know, NO OTHER PLACE DOES THIS. Don't question. * Humorless servers. There's nothing funny about living in a place like Hayden, AZ. * ENORMOUS burritos. The ones your get with the combos are regular sized, but if you order the burrito alone, get ready. * Pretty dang good shredded beef tacos. * Locals flooding the place after church. This is clearly the place to eat in the bustling Hayden/Winkelman region. * A view of the tallest free-standing structure in Arizona. Seriously. That chimney is HUGE. From 20 miles away it looks like the mountainside has its very own erect penis. * Seriously, though, it really is the tallest building in Arizona. It's one of the 50 tallest chimneys in THE ENTIRE WORLD. * A menu with both Mexican food and burgers. Is this just rural central Arizona's "thing?" They do this in Globe/Miami, too. This might be considered Globe-style Mexican food, so it makes sense. Yes, there is a thing called Globe-style Mexican food. I would totally eat here again. The food was pretty good, it was cheap, and it has its own vibe. I probably wouldn't drive to Hayden just to eat here, but if you're passing through and you're hungry, go ahead and stop in. I love exploring new venues, and Maria's was a place we picked while on our motorcycle ride through the area. I never judge book by it's cover, and neither should you! Some of the best food comes from hole-in-a-wall places, not to say Maria is one of them. There were 8 of us that hiked out of Aravaipa Canyon in October 2013, looking for a nearby restaurant where you could 'come as you are' and enjoy a filling lunch. We had seen a Yelp review for Maria's and there didn't seem to be anywhere else in the area, so we went for it. Maria's definitely did not disappoint. The burritos were probably the largest I have ever seen. Seriously. Ever. And they weren't filled with all kinds of rice and beans and other filler either. The carne asada burrito was pure beefy goodness. As a tip, get it 'enchilada style.' It's pure beefy, saucy, goodness. We also ordered a large order of "French Fries Enchilada Style" for the table and they were unique and delicious. I mean, come on, what's not to love about french fries with enchilada sauce and cheese on top. Most everyone if our group got the burros, but a few people diverted to tacos or even a club sandwich. All the food received high marks from the group. The service was excellent too, especially considering we were there on a weekday during the lunch hour and there were quite a few other diners in there. They took our order quickly and the food came out pretty fast. They were even super accomodating and allowed us to pay individually at the register rather than have to split up the bill ourselves. Oh yeah. One more thing. The chips are really excellent. They are the firm, thick crispy kind you only get in authentic Mexican restaurants. And the salsa is served chilled in a squirt bottle for easy application. Overall, I give Maria's high marks. For about 10 bucks, you can get the largest (and, perhaps, tastiest) burrito you've ever seen along with a drink. Not only that, the staff is capable and accomodating. It was okay for being the only restaurant in the area. Here is the thing, we wanted to order shredded beef tacos... they didnt have shredded beef for the tacos. So I replied bummer because I wanted shredded beef enchiladas too. To which the waitress said they could make those.... HUH? How in the world can you make shredded beef enchiladas but not shredded beef tacos??? That took this down a notch even after we walked in to not being greeted and the chips being saran wrapped on the tables already (who knows how long they could have been sitting there because they weren't even close to being busy). Chili Rellenos are very good. Whole beans were excellent. Salsa is excellent. Tortillas are served very hot and fresh. Chicken and fish tacos ingredients are tasty, fresh and shells are crisp. Service has been excellent the three times I dined there in Mar-April 2017. I will definitely eat there again. Salads are from fresh ingredients. Prices are modest and value based. read more
