La Casita in Mammoth, AZ is the basis upon which I judge Mexican food. From simple cheese crisps to the many combination plates they offer, La Casita's food is top notch. If you're traveling up or down AZ Highway 77, it is a required stop if you're passing through. The venue is not fancy, but who cares when the food is good. The servers are always attentive. I no longer get to sample their offerings as often as I would like. I used to work locally and it was the obvious lunch stop with vendors because of how good their food was. This trip I got my old favorite, Machaca Chimichanga (which you can't get that's worth anything in TX or MT). The tortilla was crispy and almost melted in my mouth without any signs of oil. Yum! Their beans are always excellent, made the old-fashioned way, creamy. Fit my drink, I opted for Modelo Negro, which complimented my chimi perfectly and followed the meal with an order of sopapillas with cinnamon & sugar and honey. ¡Perfecto! read more

I absolutely cannot see the appeal with this place. The food is $$$ and quite mediocre. Cost $25 for some slop that sorta resembled "machaca" enchiladas. If there was even a tablespoon of meat, I'd have been surprised. Advice: Just drive 20 more minutes into Tucson and eat at Molinto in Oro Valley. read more

My sister and I stopped by La Casita after a meeting, glad we did! First off all, I totally love chips and salsa and although they don't offer flour chips, it's always nice to have some. Their Salsa is served in a ketchup type bottle, so heads up. Lots of spices, tasty but not too hot. We also ordered the side of guacamole, which I didn't particularly care for. I yearn for that flavorful, fresh bite of an avocado with the crunchiness of onions, tomatoes and cilantro. If you like a plain, avocado "blend" then you might like it, my sister did. I ordered a chicken salad, which was good, tasty and quite small, which is fine - it's perfect for the price and one full serving. I usually can never finish them, but it was just the right size ! I do wish there was more chicken in there, so I might order double chicken next time. The beans were really good! My sister ordered tacos and she really liked them too - but her favorite was also the beans! This place has been open for many, many years and is extremely popular. It's a perfect spot if you feel like taking a beautiful ride and stopping in for some Mexican food, perhaps a beer or two (wink,wink). Perfect to enjoy someone's company! The ladies that work here are not only beautiful, they're just as kind when they serve you. One suggestion is to be sure to ask for everything you need when the servers come around because they do get quite busy! Last suggestion, maybe order a cheese crisp as soon as you order drinks, this way you can casually wait while they prepare your food. The view is spectacular and there's lots of fresh air outside! Big, busy place with good food. Four of us came for lunch a few days ago. The place was packed with families, but they were able to seat us immediately. We asked the server what the house specialty was, her response was the chile rellenos, so I ordered a combo plate that included a chile. We munched on chips & salsa (very good) for 15 minutes while they prepared our order. The enchilada was wonderful, the red chili burro was superb, but I'm not a fan of the chile relleno - seemed undercooked and not browned (see photo). Maybe it's just what I'm accustomed to. One of my companions ordered a margarita and it came in a bottle. I get it, easier for the restaurant, but it doesn't take much to make a real one. Great place if you are a biker - they seemed to have more motorcycle parking than car spaces! read more

We had not stopped at La Casita in Mammoth for a number of years so we stopped on a busy Sunday to see how we liked it. Many years ago they were our go-to restaurant when they were located in Globe. The service was good with several waitresses serving us rather than one. We ordered the #7 and #8 combination plates. Both of these had a red chile burro which we both thought was the best item on our plates. The taco was the old style which I liked; the wife thought the chili rellano was tasty and plump even with the white color; my tamale was the only disappointment. It was dry and cold even with the red sauce on top. The salsa was sweeter than I prefer but I used plenty. You can see by the pictures that nothing was left on our plates so that speaks for the food. The place is larger inside than it looks from the road. The wife insisted on cones since she saw all of the kids getting one. Not complimentary but a nice touch. We have tried three of the four restaurants in Mammouth and are still interested in trying the fourth. Some distance from Tucson but fair prices, good food and service and a nice ride. read more

We have been enjoying the wonderful food at this restaurant for over 50 years. It was always the place to stop on our way back from Roosevelt Lake. We live in Tucson and still drive out once a month to get our "fix" of great authentic Mexican food. My husband is no longer able to walk well so we get our food to go and sit in the car to eat. The chips were mediocre to say the least, and they give you a very small bowl with a squeeze bottle (I thought was ketchup) but it was a smooth mildly spicy sauce. My chimichanga was a wreck. I ordered the green chile-beans-pork and beef chimi and what I got was a soupy, soggy mess. I couldn't finish. The minute I cut into my burrito, a liquidy mess spilled out. The beans were soupy and watery and there was barely any meat. I paid $11 for soggy tortilla and soupy beans. Yuck. To make matters worse, about an hour after leaving this establishment I got a nice healthy case of heartburn. Thank goodness for Tums. read more

Love love love this place for the authentic food. Am I crazy to go there just for tortillas? Maybe but once you try them you will know what I'm talking about. They are huge and thin and buttered, hot and delicious. They are almost like a delicate pastry that you have to fold over a few times to eat. The green chili is what I come in for and it tastes the same as it did the very first time we visited which is awesome. Been coming here since I was small, first when we went to visit my grandparents, second when I visit my parents and lastly when we took a bunch of friends on the way to a high school football game. It's always good! Love the spicy table salsa with its complex flavors as well as a good amount of heat. Pay attention salsa making gringos! There is more to good salsa then chili's and tomatoes! The spices add so much depth! My favorite is the 3 cheese and onion enchiladas. Hard to beat simple perfection. Unless you have tasted the sauce, you just can't understand how good it is especially with the creamy beans and rice all mixed in one cheesy bite! Number 5 plate is always a winner, and the chili rellenos with the egg wash coating are the right way to eat a relleno. Cheese crisp is a childhood favorite that has been fun to introduce to my kids! Do your self a favor and get a couple of red chili mixed with bean burros for the road. Your mouth and stomach will up their evaluation of the functioning of the brain as a result. It is solid Mexican food. The sauces are great, the chile relleno is as good as can be, and the staff provides excellent service. They serve a 'Red Burro' of shredded beef with refried beans and a red mole sauce. I was surprised by how good and messy (in a good way) that combination was. The view out the front of the restaurant is breathtaking, looking out into the canyon. The meat in the tacos could use some seasoning. They serve only Pepsi products, which isn't much of a negative, but the way a glass bottle of Coke and soft tacos pair together is missed. read more

It is a hometown favorite. Any time anyone from the Tri-community area (San Manuel, Oracle, Mammoth) comes home, they often eat at one of two places - La Casita or Mel's in San Manuel. Despite what some folks would have you believe, not everyone in the area loves La Casita and Mel's. I love Mel's. I'm not a giant fan of La Casita. They make a solid burro (to those of you not from here - a burrito) and chimichanga. Their menudo is good. It's just not great. The service is always nice and friendly (it helps if you know the family that owns the restaurant) and we get our food pretty quickly. They serve legit salsa and chips and their "small" pitchers of beer are substantial, really not very small at all. It is a hometown hotspot and for those of us who grew up there, we likely have memories of family dinners, or special dinners (when I went to school in the area and joined Quill and scroll we had our celebratory dinner there).I wish they would put their menu up on here, but they just don't seem to work that way. I actually overall prefer the food of Los Michocanas better. La Casita is okay, but not my favorite. read more

About 100 miles SE of Phoenix, you'll find this gem of a restaurant seated up on a hill overlooking the valley where the very small town of Mammoth resides. I grew up in Hayden and used to come here as a kid. The food was always so flavorful and delicious. I recently came back down with a good friend of mine and she was blown away by the food. We traveled almost 2 hours for the food, but it was well worth it. She said the food was so flavorful and seasoned well, she loved her tacos and described them as addicting. The rice and beans in her own words were delicious and seasoned perfectly. The churro she ordered was delicious and magical in the amount of flavor and sweetness packed into it. In her own words it was one of the best Mexican restaurants she has ever been to and she's already asking when we can go again. The Staff were lovely and made us feel welcomed. This is amazing Mexican food. When my husband, my in-laws, and I go shooting at the Lion's Club shooting range, we always go to La Casita. It has an "A' on the health inspection. Had I not been told how wonderful this place was, I would probably not be as disappointed as I am. It's not that the food was bad, it just wasn't good. The salsa was watery and tasted of ketchup. The Corn Tortilla Cheese Crisp was exactly the kind of thing I make in about five minutes at home when I am feeling lazy. The Guacamole was thin and watery, with nothing to suggest that it came from actual avocados. The Cheese Enchilada was remarkably un-noteworthy - Amy's frozen enchiladas are actually better. The Chile Relleno was doughy and bland. However, the worst was the Beef Taco, which was certainly large enough, but filled with a sloppy mess of watery refried beans, a little cheese, and exactly three chunks of meat large enough to be identified as such. To be sure, there were a few shreds of meat sort of strewn inside, but these were more like the shreds that are left over after the cook has carved up the real bits. And the whole thing, with a Pacifico beer (the only authentically Mexican part of the whole meal) was $18 (plus a tip for the equally mediocre service). I would not call the experience terrible. I would, however, call it totally unremarkable and little different from the hundreds of forgettably mediocre Mom & Pop Mexican Restaurants I have eaten in from Brownsville to San Diego. SO - If you find yourself in Mammoth Arizona, and you are hungry... and recognizing that your choices are extremely limited... go north on 77 about another mile and eat at Tortillas Mi Pueblito instead. The food is better, and so is the service... and you will pay about half as much. read more
