None of the shopping carts roll well. I was struggling with mine and noticed other customers were having even more trouble with theirs. One went by making noises like an engine about to blow. But I like this store. It's a great alternative to Jewel. It's clean and spacious. And they had all of the products Jewel is sometimes out of or doesn't carry like frozen breakfast sausage. I wish they carried So Delicious vanilla yogurt and more non-dairy options. But all in all I found everything I was looking for. One of the self-service checkouts has a belt just like full service! If you bring your own bags and have a lot of stuff to scan, you can scan everything first and then put it in bags after it moves down the belt. I wish other stores would do this! I also wish we got a discount for self-scanning! They will not help you bag it, so bag it yourself and count the number of bags before paying since you pay for bags in IL. Good luck! read more

I'm not sure what's going on w/my local Mariano's lately? They use to blow Jewel/Osco out of the water but lately they have been slipping. Their salad bar is sort of lame. Over 1/2 of their soups containers don't even have the knobs to flip the lids open wo/burning your fingers. Lately they haven't had the large or medium containers for soup, only the small ones. Ever since Kroger took over the quality has been slipping & now they are talking about buying Jewel (Please I hope not) That's all we need is a mega grocery chain monopolizing the market & charging even more exorbitant prices read more

I sooo wish this was a Caputos or Pete's Fresh Market..ever since Kroger took over everything went downhill fast... The produce section is small despite the huge layout but they really dont have a lot of things that other grocery stores carry plus it's expensive... I needed to get soup bc I had not been feeling well and remembered that they sell soups...to my dismay the soup bar was very dirty. There was dried crusty soup in the outer layer of the soup holder..needless to say, it did NOT look appetizing and decided to not get anything after all... Im not sure why the workers are not making sure it is kept cleaned and free of spills... What is it with Mariano's letting pizzas thaw out and refreezing them? How safe are they to eat? So far I haven't gotten sick but have I just been lucky and shouldn't eat it? This is the third one I've recently bought like this and the others were noticeably worse. Makes me question the other frozen food too. I've noticed the store isn't as good as it once was. From thawed our pizza to stock that isn't rotated and prices getting too high... I think I might have start shopping around. As with most Mariano's, this one is just fine. My local Mariano's is the Ravenswood flagship, and the Jefferson Park one is a nice. It's all one level (the one near me has rooftop parking, double story, etc.) which for some reason makes it feel like less of a hassle to shop. On the other hand, I don't know my way around it as well. I picked up groceries here a year or so ago... sometime after the pandemic began. Went to the self checkout and turned around to access my cart. One of the employees was inches away from my face. When I asked her to back off, she started giving me attitude. Didn't we just get over a major pandemic where people were educated to stay 6' apart? Since the pandemic is over, how about educating your employees on the concept of personal space and remaining at arms length. I have a respiratory disability and don't want ANYONE that close. One of your mindless millennials had the nerve to suggest that I wear a mask. If they want to control shrinkage, it would be more proper to check receipts rather than hawking over someones shoulder inches from their face. The people who work here are friendly and helpful, but this store is not great. Bathrooms are dirty. That distressed looking flooring in the entrance fools no one. It's filthy. Stock is expired. Went in to buy a birthday cake and they were overpriced and so old the frosting was cracking. I Iike grocery shopping , but this store depresses me. The neighborhood deserves better. read more

Good selection, like all Mariano's stores. This one is just not well-run. They may not have enough employees for the amount of perishable foods they sell. I am now avoiding the place. Last time I went, there were 5 different piles of avocados in the produce department. Almost all the avocados were rotten, like wayyyy past ripe. I also noticed expired items on shelves and in refrigerated sections. A vacuum-packed side of salmon I bought there on sale, had been stored improperly and was spoiled. December 10, 2023 my spouse purchased groceries including an 8 piece Baked Chicken. That evening, he sampled a piece and asked me if I would try a piece without letting me know why. I took a small bite. Glad I did because the drumstick tasted of bleach! I spit it out. Dec. 11, spouse returned the chicken and told EMILY the cashier that the store had a problem. She didn't seem concerned. So I filled out the online receipt survey and clearly spelled out what was wrong with the chicken. We were never contacted by anyone from Kroger or Mariano's. BLEACH in the chicken. Disgruntled employee? Newbie who doesn't know how to clean prep surfaces properly? Whatever the case, we were so disgusted, we will never shop at Mariano's again. Marianos used to be the top of the line for me. But after several experiences it has gone downhill in this location. A combination of broken glass on the floor, opened containers on shelves and the fact that you can't get quarters anymore leaves me thinking it's time To go somewhere else. Customer service has notably declined with a combination of 1 only one register open to having no one whatsoever. Today the straw that broke the camels back was when I asked for cash back in the form of quarters and was told rudely they don't do that anymore by a manager when I already had the roll of quarters in front of me. At least try to be courteous it was not only embarrassing but gave me a bad taste in my mouth as someone who goes there regularly. read more

Who does that?? I have been a regular customer for 1.5 years at the Jefferson Park Mariano's Pharmacy on North Elston. I vet most services and products I buy and this pharmacy was no different. The results were outstanding. Under the brilliant direction of Jill, the Pharmacy Manager, they have the most efficient, professional, and caring team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. I get all my immunity shots and prescriptions but the best part is when I am uncertain about almost any aspect of a taking drug, they like to help answer my questions. An impressive example of their going beyond the norm is when my cardiologist's office provided a free prescription sample card that did not work for me Jill made calls to the manufacturer plus a 3rd party card distributor until it was straightened out. Who does that?? I still tell people about it! Jill and her pharmacy professionals take their time listening and answering questions. They have a mental storehouse of hundreds of peoples' experiences who took the same drugs for which I was prescribed. They don't act like they are doing you a favor for giving you their time and they know what they're talking about. Thanks, Jill and to your staff, for giving me confidence and comfort in knowing I get caring advice and real expertise whenever I have a medical prescription question. It has made a real-life difference. I have learned that pharmacists meet with doctors to instruct them on new drugs because pharmacists have more intense training. They have deep knowledge of pharmaceuticals and their effects. Jill's stellar team is great about sharing what they know. I am a happy customer who knows "who does that!" read more

This morning I opened the Red Plum grocery/retail ads are usually delivered on Tuesdays. "Mariano's" had their insert and a "$5 off $50 purchase" coupon was included as well. I'm not a Mariano's regular, nor did I have any idea on the amount of groceries I could get with the face of Ulysses Grant. I guess we were about to find out...hubby and I headed to the Jefferson Park location, neighboring the north side Chicago DMV. While we were looking around for good deals, hubby told me that he thought Mariano's is a solid lunch spot. He has fixed a few ATMs at several locations in the city. When he was there, he would grab a quick meal at their hot food, salad, or soup station. I have to say that I'm not a fan of their fresh produce department, but they did have a fantastic price on their iceberg lettuce for the week, $0.75/ea. Their meat department, on the other hand, exceeded my expectations. I will still head over to my neighborhood meat shop for the USDA Prime steak. Whenever I want "just cheap, good steak" or pre-assembled burgers, I can count on Mariano's. Store associates everywhere we encountered were friendly and smiling genuinely. I don't think I want to utilize this Mariano's as my go-to, but I will certainly pay attention to their weekly ads for some deals...perhaps clip the coupon if they have any. Oh, $50 was able to fill up the essentials, such as eggs, a couple jars of pasta sauce, two (2) pieces of USDA Choice steak, Eli's cheesecake sampler, chicken pot pie made in their kitchen, that inexpensive iceberg lettuce I mentioned earlier, an acorn squash hubby sneaked into the cart, two (2) loaves of French bread, two (2) pretzel rolls, two (2) jars of Marie's brand salad dressing, and instant oatmeal. read more

Huge, clean store with excellent quality fresh veggies. Two of my must have favs - deli fresh creamy coleslaw and a quart of fresh squeezed orange juice. Occasionally they'll even have beet juice, a real treat. Wear sneakers and have a protein drink before you shop here. This is a large store. You've got a half mile walk to the far rear corner of the store to find some milk & butter. Wonderful meat/seafood counter that will package your selections or grill it on the spot. And Cheeses. OMG cheeses galore w dedicated staffing. Flowers, roses, plants & flowers with a dedicated florist constantly at the counter creating. One of the best places in the area for a beautiful, full, inexpensive bouquet. I don't like being forced into the self checkout lanes vs two staffed full service lines. That being said Happy Foods is my first choice for supporting a small local grocery. Marino's is my secondary grocery for quality & selection. Whole Foods 3rd choice w higher cost but most conveniently located. read more

I continue to come here because it is convenient, and continue to leave there frustrated and angry. They are always out of stock. Fridges are empty, meat section empty. Its nearly impossible to get just the basics. Yesterday I went to buy items for one recipe and they did not have 3 of the five items I needed. I know there are supply chain issues, but I don't see other stores impacted in the same way. I left there and drove a few blocks to the Target, which is not even a full size store, and was able to buy the produce I needed. Makes no sense. And the Jewel on Foster also seems to be ok. The store is mostly operated by high school kids, and rather clueless ones at that. Sale items are rarely in stock, especially dairy, paper items, breads, etc. All the overpriced items that are Kroger branded you will always find. It's almost exactly the same as Dominick's was right before their bankruptcy. Kroger has tried many variations of their supermarket models in Chicago and most have failed. I have changed to the Jefferson Park location as my go-to store for good, down-to-earth reasons. #1. The customer service is sincere, professional, and warm. When I have had questions about a product the employees are interested in taking care of me. And, they know what they're talking about or find the answer. Perfect example: I purchased a top, nationally recognized dishwashing detergent only to get home and discover the label read Ultra antibacterial hand soap. On the label's backside, under Drug Facts Active Ingredient, it listed the Purpose as Antibacterial hand soap. The bottle I bought was EXACTLY the same look, font, and design as the regular dishwashing soap I was accustomed to seeing. Near the bottom front of the label, in light-colored small font, it read, "DISHWASHING LIQUID." C'mon DAWN. This is misleading and confusing. Which is it? I wondered. I called Mariano's Jefferson Park on Elston and got the Grocery Manager, Nick C. Nick stepped up-to-the plate. He understood my frustration and that the label was confusing and immediately offered a replacement with the actual dishwashing liquid, not a substitute of some kind. He did not require me to jump through any red-tape hoops. He was the perfect example of what any customer could expect from a high-end retail store like Whole Foods Market, where they are great, but with a sincerity and humanity that was even better. I asked Nick how that kind of customer care could be prevalent with employees throughout the entire store. He explained that it is a culture the leaders of this store, especially the Store Director, Kat H., have cultivated. Thanks, Nick and Kat. You now have my business, and I buy a lot of groceries. #2. My first experience with this Mariano's was motivating. I needed to get a covid booster shot so I returned to try their pharmacy. They embraced my slightly complicated immune issue with medical expertise and genuine warmth. It made other pharmacies pale by comparison. True. The pharmacist and pharmacy technician teamed up to answer my complicated questions in plain language. They were great. I have given a few reviews over time. It's not something I do enough because I believe there are many, many talented, deserving people in Chicago who give customers wonderful service. The kind of experience that when you leave the store it feels like you have had a near joyous experience. If that sounds over the top, it is not. Many people give justified critical, negative comments on their experiences with businesses. I also believe in giving credit where credit is due. Such is the case with Mariano's Jefferson Park. This store deserves 5-stars! read more

They never have basic things in stock (spinach, potatoes, rice, etc) and the staff is completely checked out (assuming you can even find an adult, most are high schoolers). Frequently make mistakes ringing things up (overcharging, not bagging items etc). Seriously, avoid this place. read more

Wow, what happened to this Mariano's. When this Mariano's first opened it was awesome! Now fast forward several years later and boy am I really disappointed. When this place first opened it was always well stocked, Deli counter was well staffed, and you were not charged an astronomical 30% fee for having the flowers you bought from them arranged in a vase you brought from home. Furthermore, let me also say that I am not exaggerating when I say that every single time I make a trip out to this Mariano's, it never fails that there will be one or two items I need that are not currently on their shelves, or they merely don't carry it, thus I have to leave and drive to Jewel to get it. I now go to Mariano's if I am short on time. I went back to shopping at Jewel where they are always well stocked and have everything I always need. Sad to see Mariano's go from such greatness to such a failure to its customer(s). read more

While this was once a five star store it has slipped. Maybe it's just showing signs of age. One of the automatic faucets in the men's room is not working. Also one of the hand dryers. It's been brought up to staff repeatedly to no avail. The pizzas just seem to sit out and get nice and dry instead of being more fresh and getting a little warm up before getting boxed up. At checkout the cashier needed assistance with alcohol but after calling for help three times and holding up the line I decided I didn't need to wait any longer to spend an extra hundred bucks. I can go elsewhere to buy that stuff. I hope you guys straighten the place out or there will be no reason to deal with the extra traffic on Elston. read more

Hello yelpers! I've stopped by this Mariano's today(Nov 14 2018). After i did my shopping I noticed that i got overcharged for cabbage and tomatoes. I walked to the customer service and explained the situation. The guy adjusted the price on my receipt and i got a refund. He offered no apologies, just a weird face. I thought the businesses should apologize when they do a mistake but this was not the case. Next time I will do my shopping at Jewel-Osco Pulaski/Foster. read more

I have been coming here in Mariano's too many times that I can imagine but I can say that my experience in here is just either good and bad. Yesterday, I went here to buy groceries that would last for at least two weeks and at first, I enjoyed buying on their nice selection of fresh produce, then I went to buy dry goodies and few of the particular items that I want are not in stock. I then go in their frozen food selection and good thing is they have a wide selection of frozen pizza and I the choices was really good and all are in stocks. The downside in my experience is that when I went to the meat section, I just found a spoiled meat that made me decide not to buy a single meat at all. Hope I would not encounter this situation again because it would just definitely doubt my perception for the store. read more

Really rude and poor customer service. I bought two pounds of Laura's lean beef here (not cheap!) six days ago and it had a sticker on there that said 10/20 (which is today). I went to go use it and it had browned all over the outside of the meat. Being a Registered Dietitian and certified by the state of IL in food safety, I am aware that this is a sign of spoilage and not okay to eat (and certainly not ok to feed my 3 young children). If you purchase meat and it is grey/brown on the inside, but still red on the outside that is ok, but not if it's brown/grey ALL OVER. The store "manager" was quite snippy with me, and acted like I was an idiot, telling me "Well, you bought this 6 days ago of course the light is going to make it turn this color. We would have pulled this by now. Most people don't keep fresh meat in their refrigerator. I always freeze my meat right away." Well good for you, but I BOUGHT THIS AT YOUR STORE AND IT HAS A STICKER ON IT SAYING THAT IT IS GOOD TO EAT UNTIL TODAY, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER I FREEZE IT OR NOT, AND IT IS CLEARLY SPOILING. The " manager" said that he had to "check with the store manager," who consequently refused to return the item. The "manger" said that the meat was still fit for consumption. Compare the picture I posted to any other package of ground beef and clearly the meat is not consumable. I always liked this Mariano's, and am sad to need to go to Jewel instead now, but that level of customer service is just inexcusable, and I cannot go back. read more

Time to go dock a star from Food 4 Less in comparison to this place haha. The produce section is amazing. The prices we saw here vs quality was pleasantly surprising. We could get similar prices from H Mart or Food4Less, but it's just not as fresh. The store itself is bright and clean! And the check out lines are pretty efficient. It was just a quick stop after a trip to the DMV next door, but damn. All the stories I've heard about Mariano's do not disappoint. For some reason the rating here is lower than the other locations... can't wait to check out the other ones then! I work for another grocer and I shop here... (sshhhhh!!) Overall, great quality and awesome selection of just about everything. Fresh, quality products without having to go to other overpriced stores. I am especially satisfied with their meat department. Their butchers are actually knowable about the product. They are friendly, courteous, and willing to help out and give suggestions. And for those lazy cooks (like me!) they have great quality, already seasoned chicken breasts and flavored hamburger patties which taste amazing. Large and great selections in their ethnic aisle! Still don't know what the big deal about this place is. Maybe it's because I don't care too much about organic and natural stuff, and all I care about is price and quality. I guess it's as if I'm going to Whole(paycheck) Foods and expect it to be cheap. Anyways, Mariano's is just too classy for me then, I guess. They have the same groceries that I'm looking for (non-organic, "normal") staples, but more expensive. For example, the Knorr rice sides I get at Wally World for 99-cents, is $1.09 here. The Monster drinks I occassionally get at Jewel for $2, is $2.19 here. Sure, this place does have some cool stuff like a gelato counter, warm food counter, decent salad bar, wine and alcohol section, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way to go here. Like them hipsters go here all they want, I'll stick to the cheap Wally Worlds out there. By the way, the parking lot here was good; great space to teach people how to drive. read more
