Do you all know that Kroger once tried to buy Albertsons? I'm not sure if this is still in progress or not, only that at this point I really hope it doesn't go through. I don't love monopolies, unless I am winning at the board game. So I look up cheap grocery stores, and other than Aldi, Food4Less came up. I found one not too far away from me and decided to venture up there. I walked through the doors and some of the first merchandise I see has the Kroger logo. Go figure. Where it comes to this specific grocery store, variety is one of the items that cost it points Their selection was fair, but the deli department is notably small, and there is no visible butcher shop (though there are meats and seafood for sale). You can more or less find everything you would need among these notably very wide aisles, but perhaps some items would require one to go elsewhere. Among the items they had, the store appeared clean and well stocked. When it comes to their prices, while nothing is cheap anymore, especially in Chicagoland, I found their prices were a little lower than average, especially for the eggs. When it comes to the customer service, this could also be a little bit better. While there was no one at the customer service desk, it had a little sign that said that this register is closed. So... if you need to return something or if a price isn't right, what then? You're just out of luck or something? I'd also like to note that this is a place where you bag your own groceries. Not a problem, necessarily, just thought I'd put it out there. Thus, while I appreciate the lower prices, the slightly limited selection and the lack of customer service cost Food4Less a couple points. Still respectable though, and I can still see myself coming back on occasion. read more

Worst store to shop at. They have Expired chicken and they are serving it to customers. You can get salmonella from that Store. The manager Lisa Padilla allows Employees to Smoke Weed while on lunch and come back inside smelling like marijuana. This company lets homeless steal and put Employees in Danger as well. The manager of the Store calls off a lot. She suppose to update the schedule for the employees and she does not do her job so well. Also, check the dates on Food Products. Along with seeing what else is offered, I visited Food4Less - Evanston because I discovered and took a liking to a box of Jimmy Dean - Blueberry Griddle Cake Sausage, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches which I found at this location. As for this visit, I had no issues finding a parking spot to park my vehicle. The parking lot was less congested in comparison to a Food4Less location I visit in Melrose Park off-and-on due to it being the closest to where I frequent. The atmosphere inside felt relaxed, a very chill vibe! Other than that, I must say that it was a break shopping here in comparison to a Jewel-Osco, Pete's Fresh Market, Mariano's, or even Walmart which I off-and-on shop at. Now along with the shelved items being organized, the market is acceptably clean, and the aisles have plenty of maneuvering space in between them. And like other Food4Less locations, it has that warehouse-like appearance. I particularly searched for the box of Jimmy Dean - Blueberry Griddle Cake Sausage, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches, and either apple or orange juice which I found without any assistance needed. While shopping, other items shelved I took a liking to were a box of Jimmy Dean - Maple Griddle Cake Sausage, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches, a box of MorningStar Farms - Sweet BBQ Riblets, Granola Bars Chewy - Cookies & Creme, Oreo - Dirt Cake Flavor Creme Chocolate Cookies, and the Oreo - Star Wars Flavor Creme Chocolate Cookies edition which I will definitely look into trying at some point. While in line, waiting to be rang up by David B, the cashier, I could not resist giggling at the customer to cashier interaction which certainly put me at ease and in good spirits post shopping at this Food4Less. For the most part, I enjoyed shopping at Food4Less - Evanston, but I just cannot see myself shopping at this particular location on a regular basis due to it being out of my way. This is a decent grocery store with good prices on food (duh, it's called Food4Less). It's a great place to stock up on meats, carbs, and veggies. However, it is not a store that has certain...mature items. For example, there was no feta cheese, no quinoa, no capers...the list goes on. Do not ever buy kiwi from here. I have tried three different times, and it's terrible. They're reasonably priced and the rest of their fruit is good, but whether you get a container full or bag them up yourself, they are either overly ripe or gone bad. And do NOT buy their Pet Pride food. The website blatantly lies and says it's "Proudly Made in the USA" but the actual bags of these jerky treats and beyond say "Made in Taiwan." Even when I took this complaint all the way to the Better Business Bureau, they responded with a vague automated message three times and it's still false advertising on the site. Listen! This food 4 Less is a life saver! I usually go once a week since it's not part of my daily commute. However, it's worth the trip! As a food shopper, we all know you need to go to several grocery stores to truly get everything you need. Food 4 Less usually has about 85% of what I need at a great price. This location is large and I can spend hours ( but usually 20 minutes hahaha) there. I work my way from the produce all the way to the wine section. They recently closed the self check out station for whatever reason. I don't get that part. Nevertheless, I love this place. I recommend the store for lower prices on most of your family's food and personal needs items. Not all things are priced below Walmart but for the most part you will leave with a cart full of food at and paying much less than if you were to have shopped at Jewel or Walmart. The store always has long lines at the check out with only 1-2 lanes open. The store is clean and easy to maneuver around isles. I originally began shopping here because it was nostalgic for me as growing up we had Food 4 Less in Pennsylvania and it's a place my mom shopped at for our family. Food 4 Less is a Kroger store or in the Korger family. They have a gas card and you scan it at the register and get a percentage off of your food 4 less gas station purchase. The Food 4 Less gas station at this location is always crowded and has few pumps. So I have given up going there unless it's a last ditch effort. read more

Food is definitely "4 less" and makes it a worthwhile visit especially for non-perishables. The produce and meats are good, but really should be used within a couple of days of purchase. The service here is a bit lackluster though. I have to assume it's more a problem of the chain/corporate rather than the people. If you want a glimpse at the casual, pseudo-anarchy that always lurks beneath the surface of our society, this is the place. Prices are great, as is selection, but you are guaranteed to see shopping carts abandoned everywhere, items replaced on random shelves, cars parked as if there are no lines to mark spaces, and on and on. 98% of this is the fault of customers whose blithe and blasé attitudes would probably overwhelm the most dedicated of staff. Many of the staff members here are in fact very dedicated, but there's a good number of them who are somewhat more relaxed in their approach. It happens. That said, it's still worth the adventure due to the prices and selection. On top of that, spending $100 a month there can earn you a 10-cent per gallon discount on gas, on top of the fact that the price per gallon is already consistently 10-15 cents lower than the Shell station just two blocks away. I come here specifically for the self checkout. The last time I was here it was gated off and I had to deal with a cashier. The problem with me is I cashiered for 3 years so I always go into the interaction treating them like a person. But just like a small dog that you allow into your personal space, it's only a few seconds before they take your kindness for weakness and start trying to mentally hump you. I used to not understand why people are rude to cashiers. And I don't mean younger cashiers, they just lack the experience and are kids still. I'm talking 30 year old + cashiers who 'get by' by playing some passive aggressive dominance game with customers they think they can bully. And because I'm an above average build good looking guy, I basically have a 'miniboss' target on my forehead. I will now be staring down and verbally mocking any older cashier I see with a trigger hair response time. Sucks that you can't be respectful and nice to low status job people because they see it as weakness. It's saddening that we live in a world where kindness is seen as weakness, and I have to basically be aggressive with people to come out of a simple engagement like getting food on my table without dealing with disrespect. Its like Cub foods or a Kroger. Kroger is the parent company, I think. Its far better quality than Aldi but with prices just a little higher, but, still less than Dominick's or Jewel. Some products come in a larger quantity like you may find at Costco or Sam's. I.e. a case of Gatorade wrapped or a twin box of Cinnamon toast crunch. In the bakery/deli you can find daily specials like, five deli sandwiches for $4 bucks, great budget meals. Another example of genetically modified foods sold at a lesser price. If you're having a party or a BBQ, its a great place to pick up a shit load of stuff for cheap. They do offer a small variety of organic produce. read more

Bought three containers of "Deli Pulled Chicken Cold", heated it up tonight mixed with BBQ sauce and put it on sandwiches. My son bit into his and found a foreign object. Threw out the sandwiches and figured out something else for dinner. Took the containers and the foreign object back to the store, and the manager refused to refund because the chicken was no longer in the containers. I'm not sure what having the offending chicken in the containers proves, they are clearly Food 4 Less Deli Pulled Chicken Cold containers, unless they think they sold me empty containers and I made up the story about the foreign item. Anywhoo, it's cheaper here than Jewel but I can't risk my family's safety and their attitude about foreign objects in their food is unacceptable. So I guess back to Jewel. Or Wal Mart. Gainfully unemployed, I've been searching for a grocery store cheaper than Dominick's and Strack & Van Til. At the recommendation of friends, I tried Food 4 Less, and damn if I didn't get almost twice as much food for the same money! My cupboards were bare, so I really needed to stock up on essentials. I couldn't believe how low some prices were, $1 for Progresso Soups, $1.75 for Cambell's Select, 6 Perdue Chicken breasts for $4! Food 4 Less has got it going on! But, alas, they cannot be my all-grocery grocery store. They had good deals on produce as well, but the kale and chard looked old and limper than a Boystown wrist. Their red meat section leaves a bit to be desired. Some of the meat looks good, but I couldn't find a simple cut of London Broil. The meats are labeled with numerous name extensions like Bttm Rnd/Srln/Flk cut Stk. Not helpful labeling. You can get most foods in brand names in addition to the cheaper Kroger brand, but forget about foods such as tofu or a block of parmesan cheese. Too frou frou for Food 4 Less! You'll also have to bag your own groceries, really quickly! Maybe I can't get my greens here, but I saved so much green, I can always get kale elsewhere! Solid three stars. read more

Only reviewing this because of the amazing service! My bff was looking for hummus and we asked an associate who took the time to lead us to the product! No one does that! He literally dropped what he was doing to make sure that we could find what we needed! Incredibly friendly associates who seriously take their time to go out their way to help you!!! Food is well priced and they have a great selection! The lay-out is kind of "warehouse-like"- there's a lot of food stacked up in shelves like Sam's Club or Costco rather than a Jewel type layout. Let's just say I've never been this happy about accidentally stumbling upon a grocery store before. I was never a fan of candy, so this must be what it's like to feel like a kid in a candy store? I must've looked like an idiot in the store, being that excited when most people there are just doing their normal weekly shopping. Prices are so cheap, and combined with the sketch sounding store name (food "4" less? what's the catch?), I've had to do a double take to check for misread labels, expiration dates, really similar looking offbrands. But nope! All the real deal! $1/can Monsters, $5.something huge box of cheerios, Naked Juice for less than $3?! Can't find these prices, not even at the crappy Jewel on Chicago. The produce here is cheaper and fresher and better stocked than Jewel too. The meat prices are pretty good, and the stuff hasn't killed me yet? Been cooking bits of a rib combo in the past 2 days, and 2nd day the fridge and it's still fine. It's interesting that it has a Costco and/or Aldi feel with the shelving and higher than average amount of bulk items sold, but not only are things cheaper, you can opt for brand name AND normal retail portions of items! Best of all the worlds. Yay. This might not be the best place for those who care about organic free range farm fed anything though - haven't noticed much of that, but I'm perfectly happy with their selection. Self check out is pretty nice, since they have the spinning bag rack like wal-mart's cash registers and plenty of places to put extra bags like a grocery store should! Though the program was really buggy (looking up produce is a pain and sometimes things are scanned but the weight doesn't match still? stupid machine). We've been trying to do this whole fresh grocery shopping of 1-2 days worth of produce at once, so this is probably a little out of my way, not owning a car and all, but I know where I'll be going to stock up on non-perishables, and where I'll choose to do my shopping when I do have access to a car. read more

They should have a seating area in the deli as there is always only 1 person working the deli even if 2-3 people are behind the deli only one is a actually cutting the meat/ cheese etc. Due to that there is always a line and have to wait 20 minutes or more for sandwich meat. Poor workers are over whelmed and over worked that they have an attitude when you finally get to place your order. Smh read more

Owned by Kroger, this is a no frills grocery store that's a lot less expensive than Jewel and other comparable stores. They have name brands as well as their own generic line and are as cheap or even cheaper than Aldi for some things. You bag your own groceries here, as well. They have a decent produce section, good baked goods, including cakes that you can order, a nice deli, liquor department at very reasonable prices, say if you need a bottle of wine, some beer or some other spirits, and popular items are always on sale. The only issue I've ever had is with expiration dates, so I always check. I don't do our main shopping here, but I do like to come here when we need just one item, quickly. Be careful, though...the parking lot is ALWAYS busy. read more

Always on the hunt for cheap groceries, and with the cost of everything being on the rise, I wanted to find a nearby go-to cheap supermarket. This location is about 10 minutes away. I had big hopes. I was impressed with the sale prices, and most of the food was a bit lower than you'd find at Jewel or Marianos. I'd say it's between Jewel and Aldi prices generally. Horrible customer service Kevin (the manager) and Charia (Kevin's obvious work crush) turned a simple beer purchase into an absolute nightmare. According to some Food4Less policy, all members of a shopping group must have a valid ID if anyone in the group wants to make a beer purchase. Ridiculous... I was really sad about being broke and really need to get groceries instead of eating out all the time. My close friend Charon drove me to this store.... ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It's like a cheaper version of Sam's club. You are able to buy items in larger quantities for less (like dips, chips, cereals, breads, etc.) they also are the only store in the city, that I have found that carries Kroger brand products. The produce selection is much, much larger. The prices are a few cents more than Aldi, but who's complaining? Their prices can be better than Target. I would never, ever, ever come back to this place. I went there because I heard of their "great" deals, and good selection. The produce was expensive. The meat looked like it wasn't cold enough. The cashiers were the most worthless, useless, inexperienced I've ever seen. In addition to Andy H's description (who happens to be my husband), we also experienced the stupidity of another cashier (standing next to me). When the manager came to fix the register, we asked for paper bags and he asked the cashier next to him for paper bags. He spent at least 2-3 minutes trying to tell her where the bags are. I was so utterly delighted when Food 4 Less came to town. Prices were great, food had great selection. The veggies...a bit less fancy but with such prices, I can absolutely live with that. And I loved the sales. However lately when I visited Aldi's I found that certain issues could be changed at Food 4 Less. For example at Aldi's they will never allow long lines to form without immediately opening another register. At Food 4 Less I find people who administer the cashier lines don't seem to care so much. I get the feeling at Aldi's that they are competing for the customers and I see each time that I go there that more and more people seem to be shopping there. Plus their products are quite good and prices are good as well. Many times milks, eggs, and other dairies are cheaper at Aldi's. I feel bad about this because Food 4 Less was my first "love..." How is this possible that I've not written a review of Food 4 Less? What have I been doing all this time? I need to get my Yelp together, and quickly. I'm not going to pretend it's anything other than cheap groceries in a semi warehouse-like setting, or that it doesn't have a certain generic quality, and it's true that I always come home after a trip here and scrub my hands (but that's after any trip to the grocery), but the facts are: Great prices Well stocked shelves Helpful staff Huge savings and deals Better than expected produce selection They always have oxtails in stock Very respectable house-brand (Kroger) We started shopping here during my summer of funemployment in an effort to save on grocery bills, and have kept going 'cause the prices just can't be beat. They don't always have everything on our list, especially not the "fancy" items, but all the basics are there. Id recommend using caution and a thorough eye when purchasing meat, and some produce, but if you're on a tight budget you'll appreciate how far your dollar goes here. Be prepared to bag your own haul, and sometimes endure hellishly long lines (Monday nights are the best time to go), but it winds up being worth it. read more

Today someone in a black SUV gave me the finger for waiting until they passed so I could get into the handicapped spot. A few weeks ago an Evanston resident accused my neighbor of denting her car even though he was parked in a handicapped spot and she had been inside at the alleged time. In the past I've had men come up to me while I was emptying my cart into the trunk. If you go at 6am when they open, to avoid the craziness, the aisles are blocked for cleaning. The only good thing is the loss leaders when you first walk in. Apparently local residents either scam you or act in threatening ways. Stick with the local fruit and vegetable stores. Everything is fresher and less expensive. Use Walmart for the rest. read more

This was my 5th time in several years coming back to this location when where Food 4 Less is used to be KMart back in the day and where Marshalls is used to be an electronics store called Highlands. This location is clean and fairly quiet since the one by my house is one giant hood social gathering. The employees don't do a lot of talking unless it's to assist customers or to ask managers for overrides and other work-related things. The store is well stocked and not crowded and you can shop in relative peace withouut the chaos of hood folks being loud and letting their kids run wild. read more

Wow! I came here because it was the closest grocery to me at the time but I do not regret this decision. :) the prices in here were great! Better than Jewel or Walmart. The staff wasn't the friendliest but that's alright because the prices were just great! They have groceries, produce, along with beauty and hair care (even for Black people! woo!) I eat frozen foods a lot and their prices were better than Jewel. Now when Jewel has a sale, they are better but it's still good. I did notice there are a lot of bulk items so this is a great store to buy for a family. You are sure to save a lot of money. I definitely plan on returning for my groceries. Food 4 Less is an okay store. I've only gone here when I've made my trip to Sam's Club once a month. You can get some pretty good deals. Seafood isn't the best quality. We got some frozen shrimp and they tasted dirty and grainy...even after we rinsed them. On the other hand we were throwing a party last year and got some really cool plastic cups with the swirly straws in them for like 25 cents each here. Very cool deal.
