I needed to get a make-up application in the area and "Karin Shoji Makeup" came up when I searched…read morenearby on Yelp. Despite no Yelp reviews at the time, the website had some awesome pictures so I decided to contact Karin to arrange for a time. I e-mailed on Saturday morning - Karin got back to me that same morning for an appointment on Monday afternoon. I put my payment in through Paypal and was all set to go. Easy peasy. Karin's makeup studio is on the 2nd floor of a commercial building shared with another business. I was a little confused about where to go but once I was there it was all good. Her studio overlooks Jonathan Rogers park so other than the scenic view, there is a fantastic amount of natural light that brightens up the studio. I had my eyelashes done at a place nearby (Kinjou Lashes) so I did not do anything related with lashes. Karin asked me several questions related to my skin type, the jewellery I would wear with my outfit, and was open to any specific requests that I had. To be quite honest, I'm a make-up newbie so I left all the creative decisions to Karin and she did great! My make up session went by really quickly (approx. 1 hour) and Karin was quite personable and chatty - it was like doing make-up with an old friend. She uses high quality products - unfortunately I can't name them all but it included MAC, yaby, YSL (the touche eclat) and her makeup brushes were high-quality & soft. She was also nice enough to put together a mini touch up kit for my lips that I could use later in the evening after dinner (she thinks ahead!). Overall - it was quite fun & Karin was great. I got plenty of compliments about my make-up that day so the investment was totally worth it - perhaps I will go back for some make-up classes in the future!

I booked Purple Haze Artistry for my wedding in May 2013. In November 2012, without any notice my mother became very ill and required emergency heart surgery. It was then decided that my wedding would have to be postponed to a later date. I contacted Gurv almost immediately, within the next month and explained my situation - almost 5 months before my wedding. She stated that once my fiancé and I had figured out a new date, to contact her. When that time came, Gurv refused to credit me any of my deposit! I had contacted her before that also to try and use this $800 for a nonbridal event, and she continued to refuse. When my husband and I began planning our destination wedding, I contacted her again hoping that my hard earned $800 wasn't entirely lost, and asked what her service charge was for flying her over to the location. Again, the deposit was completely voided and ignored, as if I gave her nothing, and she said she would charge flight, hotel, her makeup service charge for her and her colleague and would require ANOTHER deposit! She stated that I had a signed a contract, and the deposit was non refundable. Despite giving her ample time and told her months before, she sated "she had to turn away so many clients for that day" and she will be keeping the deposit. She had absolutely no sympathy or empathy for my situation - and instead put her contract before any morals or feelings for a client. I am now married, and booked a different makeup aritist for my wedding events. When I explained to her what Gurv, and purple haze artistry had done to me during a very stressful time, she said that if it were her, she would have given me a credit to use for a wedding event or non bridal event. Instead I had paid Gurv for work she did not do. For brides planning your upcoming nuptials, just be careful when signing a contract, this contract is to protect them NOT you. Life throws you unexpected curve balls and you can never prepare for them. Book a makeup artist, that you can trust and you know has your best interests at heart. I will never recommend purple haze artistry to any one for bridal or non bridal.

The makeup girl also talked badly of a previous client who did not like her work. The hair lady was OK....she couldn't do any styles that were flowy or creative, and could hairspray an updo that was meh. Mostly, she used a ton of hairspray and the hair stayed intact but it was forgettable. Overall, the vibes we got from the ladies was odd. They didn't seem friendly, not even to each other and their work just wasn't good enough to warrant their prices or catty attitudes.
