Never have I genuinely loved a haircut so much until I found Mary!! After years of constantly changing stylists because of results that I never felt completely satisfied with, I became so reluctant to get my next haircut that I held off on it for over a year. With much research and debate, I finally took my chances and I'm beyond grateful that it was with Mary~ First of all, she really took the time to understand what I wanted. In fact, she consistently worked with me every step of the way. I currently live in Portland and with the chance of being back in Los Angeles for a wedding -- I called Mary to see if she can squeeze me in, and she did! This place is awesome. The ladies here have an excellent dynamic. They work so well together. Mary is great with hair and Julia is fantastic too! I haven't experienced Ruby but all her clients seem happy with her beautiful work as well. Julia shampoo'd me and made my leg hair grew like a chia pet as I got the chills and teard up from tranquillity. Between excellent hair color and THE BEST scalp Massage evah, I walk away feeling clean, confident and relaxed. It's therapy for your head. My antidepressant is visiting this salon. I've lived in LA for 6 years and had a hard time trusting a hairdresser to color my hair, especially without spending a ridiculous amount of money. Ruby changed that after one session. I wanted to take my natural chestnut color to a honey brunette, without getting too blonde. I simply showed Ruby a picture, and she was able to get me to a color even better than I had originally thought. Knowing I am terrible with maintenance, she talked me through her idea of how to take my hair lighter, while also being able to let it grow out so that I wouldn't need to touch it up for MONTHS! I was referred to Mary by a friend, I have been living in Los Angeles for the last 3 years and you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a good hair stylist. Being that I live in West Hollywood you would think it would be easy...WRONG. Mary is located in Santa Monica and her work is worth every second of the 30 minute drive. She actually listens to what you want, she makes suggestions on what might work better for your hair type and facial structure while keeping your needs in mind. Now let's talk about the location, Mary's studio is amazing because it's very private, I've been to many salons where there are too many chairs filled with with women chatting and you can barely hear yourself think. At Mary's you get a very private, personal service, where she can actually hear what you're saying and 100 percent of her attention is on you. Now, that's what a day at the salon should feel like. Being by the beach is the icing on the cake, there are so many things to do after you are finished with your cut, color, or blow out. You can grab a drink at a local bar, do some shopping, or just lay out on the sand. The entire experience here is awesome, and I really don't feel the need to try anyone else. I truly don't understand how I'm the first bad review here, I guess every one has a bad day and unfortunately Mary's bad day was taken out on my hair :( It's been nearly 3 months since Mary trashed my hair, and almost everyday I feel sick that I put so much trust in these reviews and booked a "Creative Color" appointment with her. When I moved to SanMo from the valley 3 years ago I found a lovely local stylist on Montana Ave, who recently moved to San Diego.. So I was on the hunt for a new stylist in SanMo. With so many good reviews and fun Instagram pictures I jumped right into Mary's chair confident she could pull off this fun silver/blue ombré I'd been wanting for over a year. What did I actually get? Mary did a basic (and rushed) technique of an ombré without a high enough volume (color lifter) to lighten my hair, didn't leave it on long enough, and then tried putting the completely wrong shade of dark blue over it and my hair came out patchy and green.... When she realized she screwed up she REBLEACHED my hair, completely trashing it... She then told me my hair couldn't be blue and dyed it magenta.. Then charged me double her posted rate for an ombré... I've since had to cut 5 inches off my hair and have breakage along the sides that's as short as bangs :( She knew my hair was bad and told me to come back in a few weeks and she'd fix it, also offering me complimentary conditioning treatments... Which she completely forgot about when I returned a few weeks later because after assessing my hair she quoted me another couple hundred dollars to fix it... I've sat in the chairs of top stylists in NYC and never batted a lash at the cost, but that's because I I received top stylist results. At this point I asked Mary to really look at the work she did and tell me if I she was proud of the results (my hair was a patchy orange, yellow and magenta fried mess I'd been wearing in a bun out of embarrassment for the past 3 weeks). I then reminded her I was only back for her to fix it. To "fix" it she color matched my roots with a brown and painted from the top of the ombré to cover the orange and yellow patchy pieces. She then striped as much of the magenta out as she could and put a dark grey over and it. At least it looked decent when I left this time, but I now I've paid several hundred dollars for my hair to be very damaged and very far from what I went in to her salon for. She also got hair dye all over my new shirt ruining it.. Very sloppy and unprofessional. I haven't yet mentioned before visiting her I hadn't colored my hair in almost a year preparing for this blue ombré. My hair was so healthy and long! Sigh... So why write this review a few months later? Well now the grey has faded out and I need my color done again. Scared to go back or try a new stylist, I made an appointment back up in the valley at my old salon. My old stylist toned my hair to silver and dyed it the exact shade of blue I wanted from the get go!! 1) she toned it so there was no extra damage 2) she dyed it THE EXACT SHADE OF BLUE Mary told me my hair couldn't be.... I wish I could reverse time and have never stepped foot in Mary's salon.. My old (now new again!) stylist could have lifted my hair correctly the first time, I could have actually had a decent looking ombré, because this reverse brown painted one is decent at a best, and I could have enjoyed this awesome shade of blue my hair now is even more if my hair wasn't so damaged from all the processes Mary did to it. So if you want a basic ombré and a basic experience in a basic cubicle of a salon, Mary is your girl. If you want "Creative Color" RUN, because creative color in this salon was amateur hour, I felt like a student was experimenting on my hair. read more

So I met Mary at the salon in Venice Beach. I drove 3 hours each way (From San Diego) to go see her so she could dye, cut and style my hair! Well worth it! Mary did an amazing job and she was so fun to talk to and she listened to everything I wanted. I wish I took before and after pictures because she chopped off about 3 inches of my hair and it never felt and looked so much healthier. She did an amazing job fixing my ratchet grown out highlights/ombre and dyed everything back 1 color. I WOULD DEF RECOMMEND MARY TO DO YOUR HAIR. I would like to say that I don't have good hair because I am lazy. I go to the pool a lot... I shampoo everyday... and I don't like a lot of products in my hair. I'm the worst. But Mary... Bless that woman... she saves my hair from looking tragic. Mary always listens and caters to what her clients want, which is something I appreciate. BUT... she also gives her input and suggestions on what will yield the best results. She just knows her trade well. She knows what I like and gives me a low enough maintenance cut and color that makes it appear like I try. And it's working because I get asked where I get my cut and color all the time. Mary fixed my messed up highlights that was done just a day before I found her on Yelp. It's not easy to cut my super straight hair too and I love the layers I have. I can tell a good layering cut because if its not blended in properly, my super straight hair will show choppy or too thinned out. I loved everything. This rave review of Mary, hair stylist extraordinaire, is long over-due... I discovered Mary this past May while searching ombre hair color in Venice on Yelp. Sit Still Salon was at the top of the list with Mary having an abundance of positive reviews for her Ombre technique (not shocking, given how she churns out flawless ombre'd and balayage'd tresses like it's nobody's business!) My pain point at that time is I had gone to three different hair stylists requesting obvious ombre highlights - even equipped with pictures of exactly what I wanted - yet none of the stylists succeeded in coming even close to what I had asked for. I honestly started to think it was me and that I lacked clear communication of my desired results. Just when I was about to throw in the towel on the whole ombre thing, I found Mary and booked my appointment. What did I have to lose? Well, I guess another several hundred dollars... But us ladies will go through hell and high water to achieve aesthetic perfection. It's a bitch sometimes. During the consult, Mary did all the same things the other stylists had done (asked several questions, pulled up photos on her iPad, etc) - But what really set Mary apart from the rest is that she DELIVERED! The color, tone, gradient fade and cut were all exactly what I wanted AND, most importantly, what I had expressed I wanted. What are the chances the other stylists didn't understand me? Bonus point to Mary, right then and there, for NOTmaking me feel like I'm taking crazy pills ;) I have since been back to see Mary to deepen up my blonde ends, giving me a chocolatey ombre, and again, everything went perfectly. I first went to Mary over a year ago while she was still working in Venice and she gave me the most beautiful and healthiest ash blonde balayage ombre ever on my damaged asian hair that got me so many compliments. THANK GOD I managed to find her again because she is the one stylist I can really trust with my hair. This review is for Ruby! First of all, I did not think I'd ever find a stylist who could do my hair right. I was clearly wrong! I had been wanting to get an ashy blonde balayage/babylights combo for the longest time and she completely exceeded my expectations. Ruby is a great conversationalist and I felt like I made a new friend from my appointment! She took less than 8 hours to finish, too! My hair felt so soft and healthy even after the color treatment -- I was amazed. Ruby really takes the time to get everything done right, and used Olaplex on my hair to keep it as healthy as possible. She even gave me the take-home treatment to keep my locks shiny and manageable! It's been a few months since I've gotten my hair done by her now, but my hair still looks AMAZING. No orange hues, no odd yellowing... still the good ol' ash. My roots are growing out, but the way she did my hair makes the grow-out look so natural and not unkept. Usually I write fairly brief reviews since they're easier to read, but also because I'm lazy. Mary and Ruby are great though, so they deserve more. Got an ombré balayage on my black hair and the color transitions super smoothly and looks great. I also tend to shut up at a hair salon and regret it later because the few times I do speak up, hair stylists will tell me what I want is wrong or half-heartedly go along with it. I am so glad that I have found Mary in Santa Monica! i have one of those boring long thick Asian hair and was looking into changing it up a little bit. She asked me to send her photo of hair style i want before my appointment. I scheduled for balayage. I had ombre six months ago and the bottom part was pretty blonde and dead. I have seen Mary and Ruby for my hair and they both do an amazing job! My hair used to be a convoluted mixture of brassy red and orange due to dying it red with boxed dye and then getting a horrible botched ombre done over it by another hair stylist. I went to Mary for a color correction and a trim and wow! All the brass disappeared and she made it look amazing. Fast forward about a year later, I grew out my ombre and went to Ruby, who gave me beautiful balayage locks while still keeping it natural and healthy!
