    iced cream and waffled cone
    Mark L.

A lot of people seem to be impressed with Marble Slab's new spin on ice cream, but I've been crumbling stuff up and putting it on top of other stuff going on over two decades now. Lack of innovation aside, Marble Slab is one of the better purveyors of crumbled up stuff put on top of other stuff. There are so many different combinations; I try something new every time I go. This time I had Sweet Cream with some Skor. Not surprisingly, it tasted great. I take issue with the price, but steep prices aren't going to keep me away from that sweet, sweet cream. I was thinking about giving my first five star review, but a guy wearing an Ed Hardy t-shirt walked in while I was in line and he was not promptly asked to leave.

The last time I had ice cream this good was Cows Ice Cream in PEI. And I've had Marble Slab ice cream at West Edmonton Mall, but I swear the ice cream here is better than both. So fresh! And the flavor is POW!! It's not much to look at, and it's tiny, with only a couple of tables, but you probably won't notice much when you dig into flavors like Double Chocolate, Coffee, Maple, Bubble Gum, Cheesecake, Black Cherry, Birthday Cake, Sweet Cream, Coconut, and more. The also have ice cream quarts and cakes to go. I'm going to come here the next time I need an ice cream cake. I almost forgot to mention the mix-ins and cones! I had crumbled Skor Bar in my Cotton Candy ice cream, YegFoodie had fresh raspberries in her Cheesecake ice cream, and my other friend had both strawberries and raspberries in her Birthday Cake ice cream. We all had regular waffle cones, but a variety of white, milk, and dark chocolate cones with and without sprinkles were available. I'd like to point out the fast service as well. When we came in there was a full line up to the door, but I barely had enough time to decide what I wanted, they were so fast. I expected to stand there for awhile, but had our cones in hand really quickly. Plus the girl behind the counter was a total sweetheart, and knows how to chat while she works. I would definitely come back.

The Cookie Dough Drizzle ice cream cake from Marble Slab - delicious!

The ice cream here is delicious - at least 16 different freshly made flavours at any given time with every tasty mix-in imaginable. Marble Slab newbs: Mix-ins are everything from fruit to cookies to candy bars to gummies that are folded into the ice cream by hand when you order. The combinations are endless. My fave treat is the birthday cake ice cream mixed with strawberries in a vanilla waffle cone. I have also purchased cakes here on numerous occasions. The Cookie Dough Drizzle is the closest thing to the DQ Ice Cream cake, but SO much better. (I know, I didn't think it was possible either!). My only gripe about this location is the woman I presume to be the franchisee. After having several unpleasant encounters with her, I've begun to avoid the shop when I see her behind the counter. The other employees I've come into contact with have been courteous and efficient. It's a little pricier than other ice cream shops, but it is worth it for the quality!

Pretty much every chocolate bar in this one!

I eat this stuff even though I am allergic to it! It's so good. They have unlimited mixins right now which is a bonus. I had the cotton candy circus. It was really yummy. A lot better when I try and choose my own mixins which sometimes doesn't work out so good. My husband says it's worth paying double the amount you usually spend for ice cream. I think it's so good because it's all home made and very creamy! Definitely a fun special treat!

I don't know about you but aside from chocolate I love to eat ice cream, even thought I'm lactose intolerant I still like to consume it. I don't really go out to an ice cream shop very often and if I do it's got to be Marble Slab for me. They have this fantastic cheesecake flavor of ice cream and if you ask them to add raspberries and crushed gram crackers it's like having raspberry cheesecake.... it's so awesome. Oh and if you like cookies and cream flavored ice cream you'll love Marble Slab's version of it. The first time you go there you may be surprised at how you see they handle your scoops of ice cream. They scoop your desired flavor and pop it on to a marble slab and then mix in your desired toppings, likes raspberries or cookies. After your toppings have been mixed or kneaded into the ice cream they serve it to you in a dish or cone (which ever you want). Even though it's winter and it's been pretty cold out in Edmonton I still grab some of my favorite ice cream from Marble Slab. You know what they say right? If you're hot eat some soup, if your cold eat some ice cream! Well, that's my motto anyway.

They even have a wall stocked with jams, honeys, caramels, chocolates, nuts, salts, sugars and other high end, super must have ingredients to wow your taste buds (and show off to your dinner guests!) I bought a delightful crystallized honey as well as a jar of salted caramel that is so amazing it could be drizzled on a dust bunny and make it taste divine! I also added to my insane cookie-cutter collection, which I hide from my other half so he doesn't think I'm Kitchen Cuckoo! Oh, wait... It is a go-to destination to pick up that perfect hostess gift or for your super foodie friend. I'll be honest I haven't tried the sorbet, but the other two flavours are delicious. They also have four rotating seasonal flavours that change each month, and one of those will be vegan and so good for me. This month November 2025 the vegan flavour is Poached Pear and Brown Sugar Streusal. It is heavenly and I went to Made By Marcus two days in a row for this. You can get most of their flavours in to-go pints and I'm pretty tempted to pick this up. Downside to Made By Marcus is the line outside will be crazy in the summer. Yelo'd is Whyte Ave's famed…read moreFilipino and Asian inspired ice cream shop and I have heard nothing but rave reviews about them since they opened in 2018. Named Favourite Dessert on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list, "yelo" means ice in Tagalog... And this shop is going to change your whole ice cream world. Located in Old Strathcona, Yelo'd used to be located down the street (on the other side of the tracks) in a much smaller space. They have since moved right into the action and are now in a gorgeous historic building, adding so much to the vibrancy of the avenue. I've watched this building (originally the Dominion Hotel built in 1903) struggle over the years to find the right combination of business tenants and I think that they've finally done it! The interior of the shop is large and spacious but the most striking feature is the elaborately decorated Victorian wooden porch at the entrance. You can just picture yourself sitting out there on a hot summer day with a delicious ice cream in hand, taking in the sights of Whyte Ave. The vibe inside is a bit more modern with gleaming pastry and ice cream cases, mural-covered walls, and neon lighting. The colour scheme leans purple which makes complete sense once you realize that ube (purple yam) is the signature flavour at Yelo'd. The shop feels bright and fresh, exuding an upbeat atmosphere while still maintaining a specific identity. I visited on a Sunday afternoon with the intention to taste and experience as much of Yelo'd as I possibly could! There was only one employee serving us and she was incredibly gracious as we proceeded to bombard her with our large and varied order. I certainly appreciated her efficiency and kindness. Before we even begin the topic of ice cream, it bears mentioning that Yelo'd offers a whole cafe menu of various coffees. This also includes tropical sodas and milkshakes. You could honestly visit just for the cafe aspect and to sit with a delicious beverage (and yes, I will be doing this). Most drinks can be made hot or iced which is handy depending on the season outside. I was drawn to their Iced Ube Latte ($5.50) which seemed like a great way to carry the purple theme into my coffee. Swirls of purple ube syrup mingled with the coffee and milk. It wasn't long before the entire beverage wore a violet hue. I liked this coffee a lot. It was sweet in just the way that I like it and I believe that it may have been made with evaporated milk which would also account for some of the sweetness. The ube flavour (and colour) made this beverage interesting and unique. I could see myself ordering one of these regularly, both hot and cold. Yelo'd also makes this same latte with pandan or yema, which I'm sure are equally delicious. I also noticed that there are seasonal drinks to choose from and that there's a secret staff drink menu??! Clearly, I have a lot more to discover in terms of sips at Yelo'd! There are so many exciting ice cream options at Yelo'd!! Not only do they offer a wide range of hard ice cream but their soft serve has become pretty famous in its own right. However, there's even more beyond that because they make sundaes and ice cream sandwiches as well. No matter what you're craving, they've certainly got you covered. One of the main things that I wanted to try was their straight-up Ube Soft Serve on a charcoal Waffle Cone ($6.50). Yelo'd usually has two soft serve flavours on the go at all times which rotate, but they always keep ube on hand. You can get one solid flavour or a swirl of two. On my visit the second flavour was macapuno (coconut). I decided to forgo the swirl because I really just wanted to try their ube soft serve all on its own (and in all of its glory). This perfectly simple cone was magic. The quality of the soft serve was top-notch and ultra creamy without an ice crystal in sight. The flavour of the ube was nutty and somewhat similar to vanilla, captured wonderfully on this cone. Of course the violaceous colour is part of what makes it so much fun! I loved the crunchy and sweet waffle cone, the charcoal black acting in striking colour contrast. This soft serve is some of the best in the whole city, if not just the overall best. (I sometimes go around saying that hard ice cream is "over" and this soft serve only convinced me further.) Next, I had to try the most popular item on the menu and the dessert synonymous with the Philippines; Halo Halo (Philippine shaved ice with jellies, jackfruit, coconut strings, red beans + your choice of soft ice cream or scoop - $12.00). I find it incredibly exciting that halo halo has arrived in Edmonton and that there are a few places to try it these days. "Halo halo" means mix-mix in Tagalog, which is exactly what the dessert entails - a mix of ingredients that you get to mix together! It's like a big Filipino sundae filled with an array of flavours and textures. Halo halo can be prepared in a bunch

I love how the flavors offered are unique and it stuck to the theme of Filipino icecream. I tried the Matcha Berry and the Keso+Ube cake. I wasn't that big of a fan of the Matcha Berry since it was more sour tasting and the matcha wasn't that strong. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back to try more flavours though. The truck doesn't have a fixed location so remember to check their Instagram page before going.
