A lot of people seem to be impressed with Marble Slab's new spin on ice cream, but I've been crumbling stuff up and putting it on top of other stuff going on over two decades now. Lack of innovation aside, Marble Slab is one of the better purveyors of crumbled up stuff put on top of other stuff. There are so many different combinations; I try something new every time I go. This time I had Sweet Cream with some Skor. Not surprisingly, it tasted great. I take issue with the price, but steep prices aren't going to keep me away from that sweet, sweet cream. I was thinking about giving my first five star review, but a guy wearing an Ed Hardy t-shirt walked in while I was in line and he was not promptly asked to leave. read more

The last time I had ice cream this good was Cows Ice Cream in PEI. And I've had Marble Slab ice cream at West Edmonton Mall, but I swear the ice cream here is better than both. So fresh! And the flavor is POW!! It's not much to look at, and it's tiny, with only a couple of tables, but you probably won't notice much when you dig into flavors like Double Chocolate, Coffee, Maple, Bubble Gum, Cheesecake, Black Cherry, Birthday Cake, Sweet Cream, Coconut, and more. The also have ice cream quarts and cakes to go. I'm going to come here the next time I need an ice cream cake. I almost forgot to mention the mix-ins and cones! I had crumbled Skor Bar in my Cotton Candy ice cream, YegFoodie had fresh raspberries in her Cheesecake ice cream, and my other friend had both strawberries and raspberries in her Birthday Cake ice cream. We all had regular waffle cones, but a variety of white, milk, and dark chocolate cones with and without sprinkles were available. I'd like to point out the fast service as well. When we came in there was a full line up to the door, but I barely had enough time to decide what I wanted, they were so fast. The ice cream here is delicious - at least 16 different freshly made flavours at any given time with every tasty mix-in imaginable. Marble Slab newbs: Mix-ins are everything from fruit to cookies to candy bars to gummies that are folded into the ice cream by hand when you order. The combinations are endless. My fave treat is the birthday cake ice cream mixed with strawberries in a vanilla waffle cone. I have also purchased cakes here on numerous occasions. The Cookie Dough Drizzle is the closest thing to the DQ Ice Cream cake, but SO much better. (I know, I didn't think it was possible either!). My only gripe about this location is the woman I presume to be the franchisee. After having several unpleasant encounters with her, I've begun to avoid the shop when I see her behind the counter. The other employees I've come into contact with have been courteous and efficient. It's a little pricier than other ice cream shops, but it is worth it for the quality! read more

They have this fantastic cheesecake flavor of ice cream and if you ask them to add raspberries and crushed gram crackers it's like having raspberry cheesecake.... it's so awesome. Oh and if you like cookies and cream flavored ice cream you'll love Marble Slab's version of it. The first time you go there you may be surprised at how you see they handle your scoops of ice cream. They scoop your desired flavor and pop it on to a marble slab and then mix in your desired toppings, likes raspberries or cookies. After your toppings have been mixed or kneaded into the ice cream they serve it to you in a dish or cone (which ever you want). Even though it's winter and it's been pretty cold out in Edmonton I still grab some of my favorite ice cream from Marble Slab. You know what they say right? There aren't many downtown Edmonton ice cream shops, but Marble Slab is delicious. This location occasionally gets very lined up, but for good reason: the mixings are awesome! Now that mixings are unlimited, I recommend not forgetting that they also have hot caramel and chocolate sauce as options! The waffle cones are very yummy but I recommend the waffle bowls as I'm klutzy enough that using a waffle bowl results in less spillage which is key to the enjoyment of every last bit of the ice cream and mixings. Like with many fast food locations there has been considerable staff turnover since I've first started frequenting this location, and occasionally there is only one staff member available to serve the needs of many folks in line, but this is not unusual for an establishment like this one. If you're planning on going to a Marble Slab location at least once a year, I recommend joining their email list as they occasionally send freebies and coupons which are well worth it. read more

I love ice cream. It's hard to disappoint me. But this place did. The ice cream was average, but the service was OH MY GOD bad. My boyfriend and I went here for a date. We walked in and the employee behind the counter had the biggest scowl on his face. Like, I used to scoop ice cream, I know it sucks to get it all over your forearms and be sticky, but it's not necessary to take it out on customers. My boyfriend wanted a milkshake. We were the only people in there, and we took a couple minutes to look at the flavours. Meanwhile the employee stood there with his arms dangling at his sides, saying nothing, staring daggers at us as we talked about wanting chocolate. My boyfriend ordered a chocolate milkshake. The employee opened the cooler, looked into the chocolate bin (which appeared to have quite a bit), slammed the lid down and said "There's not enough to make a milkshake." And assumed his position as angry ice cream soldier, without offering substitutions or apologizing. My boyfriend pointed to a different chocolate based flavour. "Ok, I'll have that one." Without even opening the cooler, the employee glanced down and said "There's not enough to make a milkshake." Once again, he didn't offer any help choosing another flavour, didn't apologize, he just stared at us like he wanted to smash our heads in with his ice cream scoop. Eventually I got a white chocolate scoop and my boyfriend got a raspberry milkshake. The employee plopped my ice cream down on the board, and sighed loudly when I asked for a bowl. My boyfriend received his milkshake, and it was runny and bland. My ice cream was pretty good, but the employee's hate for his job and is paying customers made me resent how much I had spent on the mediocre scoop. Like I said, I like ice cream and I'm hard to disappoint. But the spiteful employee at this Marble Slab reminded me that even ice cream can be ruined by bad service. read more

Worst in the chain! They didn't know how to make a hot fudge sundae and were incredibly stingy with the hot fudge which wasn't even luke warm as it was sitting in a squeeze bottle out on the counter. When I questioned her about it she said the hot fudge was warm which it wasn't when I got my hands on my sundae. Don't waste your time or money on this location. It was also over a 20 minute wait cause only one girl was assisting customers and she was very slow cause there was only 2 people ahead of me. Update - After writing a long, detailed email to the company, I did receive an apology and an offer for a free sundae or a free half a litre. However, they should have offered to fix it the first time I was there. There was an experienced employee there who witnessed my interaction with what turns out to be a new employee and instead of coming over and helping her, and/or correcting the situation she stayed out of it. Also having found out via their reply email that the new employee was new, the employee never identified themselves as such. Had they, I would have been more understanding and walked her through how to make a hot fudge sundae properly instead of assuming she was just incompetent. The same experienced employee was there when I returned to redeem my email for a free half litre and when the employee who took my order told her that I was the one that complained and was getting a free half litre, the already dour looking employee looked even more so, and just looked angry and like she didn't want to be there as she rang through people's orders. For what it is, Marble Slab is fun place to grab some ice cream. There are usually 16 to 20 flavours available at a time ranging from "adult" (double chocolate) to classic (strawberry/vanilla) to kids (bubble gum). It's good, but not premium ice cream, but that's not the point. You can pick one, two or three different flavours which are then transferred to a refrigerated stone counter (the marble slab) where they are mixed together. You can also select from a variety of "toppings" to go into the mix (gummy bears, crushed cookies or chocolate bars, fruit). Then the resulting ice cream mélange is served in a cup, waffle cup or cone (waffle/regular). You should be aware that every option comes with an incremental cost, so more than one scoop, each "topping" and cup/cone adds to the total. I'm actually not that much of a fan of the ice cream mush thing. I prefer the traditional ice cream, fruit or chocolate sauce and whipped cream style, but I love their hand-dipped shakes. Real milk, real ice cream with a dash of high fructose corn syrup (it's a US chain). Kids love seeing their ice cream and gummy bears being smushed together though. There is a little seating but it's clearly a grab and go arrangement. If you like the ice cream itself, which I'm not that big a fan of, you can also get hand packed pints. I've noticed that some outlets have ice cream cakes available too. This place is great for kids with the intrinsic show and I would stop in on a hot day if I'm passing by. There are better ice cream and gelato spots for getting premium ice cream from though. read more

The kids love this place.....but it is a bit of a project to get them all to order something because of all the customization potential. Really, who doesn't love ice cream? That was a rhetorical question because EVERYBODY loves ice cream, and the people who say they don't obviously have some unresolved childhood issues. Marble slab is an ice cream shop which, automatically, makes it good. They have a ton of flavours, and almost as many toppings that you can add to your flavour of choice. This only gets 3 stars from me because, while it is ice cream and ice cream is inherently good, marble slab is very expensive ice cream. And all the time they spend fussing with the ice cream to mix in your topping(s) can create long line ups and even longer wait times. And that is time I would rather spend eating ice cream, instead of staring at it through glass or watching it be prepared. Which is why, for my money, I will probably end up getting my ice cream and toppings in made into a Blizzard instead of from Marble Slab. read more

Too my great disappointment... no raspberry :-( After much back and forth, I decided to go with the black cherry in a medium size (which was quite a bit and just right / I certainly wouldn't want any more). Now, I must say that the taste was not overpowering but still pretty good although it's no raspberry. Unfortunately, I chose the dark chocolate waffle cone as my vessel as it was very blah. The cone itself was great-no leakage, light and crispy-but the chocolate was a let down. It really overpowered the cone and made it quite thick which I didn't like. Next time no chocolate. The Marble Slab redefines ice cream. Baskin-Robbins, move over. Actually, it has. I think more people in Edmonton think to go to the Slab for a cool-off treat than to BR - after all, what's 30 flavours when you can get anything and everything rolled into your ice cream right before your eyes! It's sooooo good, and expensive. Good luck spending less than $7 are your cone. There are waffle funnels dipped in chocolate and rolled in candy and nuts, and it's hard to go with plain, old regular when you can upgrade to one of these delicious options. I like to go to the Marble Slab at 109 and Jasper because it's not as busy. The Whyte Ave one has huge lines in the summer. It seems everyone and their cousin goes there when the mercury rises past 20C. There are also a couple of low fat options if you don't want to totally self-sabotage just 'cause it's hot out and ice cream cones don't have nutrition indexes on them. There is low and no-fat frozen yogurt, both in vanilla and chocolate that are excellent, and they cost a bit less than the ice cream - if you don't load it with all the bells and whistle you have to choose from. read more

Dairy Queen? Umm, Nope. Baskin Robbins? Been there, done that. Marble Slab? Yup! This is THE place for ice cream in Edmonton, and I am converted. I will never go back. This place has a huge selection of ice cream flavors (bases) and chocolate, fruit, candy etc. (toppings). They will "smash" and "mix" your ice cream creation together on a slab of marble (hence the name) and put it in a bowl, cone, waffle cone, or waffle bowl for you. Some of their cones are even covered in chocolate or vanilla sauce. My favorite combination is the strawberry shortcake (sweet cream ice cream, strawberries and graham crackers). They have some combinations posted, but you are welcome to come up with your own creations as well. Got ice-cream from downtown Marble Slab with raspberries and blueberries in a to go. Got home... Blueberries were major bad/rotten/rancid..whatever blueberries do. Tried to call and tell them cuz headache is too bad to go back and be like wtf.... Didn't answer. I hope the next person to get blueberries eats them right away and is a spaz. This is strike 4 for this location. Other times they have been chintzy on their supposedly weighed ice cream (I have had enough to know when I'm not getting what I'm supposed to). I would like everyone to see this before deciding on this location. I ordered a birthday cake, went to pick it up and the employee offers to put it in a bag for me. I say sure since I will be walking it home. Note that I didn't get a look at the cake. Fast forward to when I get home and notice 'Happy Bithday' is written in two different icings. I'm understandably mad. I call them and ask for it to be fixed and get this. It's my fault and I'm wrong and it says birthday (see my pic, it does not say birthday). She tells me I saw the cake for 5 minutes and should have noticed it. First off, I saw that cake for 5 seconds, and secondly why would it be off? It's a simple request. Write happy birthday. That's it! So I tell her I would like my money back and she declines, because again it's my fault and I can hear her talking to someone in the background who agrees with her. I remember when the very first Marble Slab opened up not too far from my Grandma's house in Houston, Texas. Grandma used to take me, and I would get a kick out of watching the workers behind the glass mixing my favorite candies into the ice cream. I have zero complaints about ice cream! The flavours are yummy and there's a good selection. You can ask for little samples if you want to try out flavours. There are also cakes, prepackaged ice cream, and ice cream sandwiches available in the freezer for you to pick up. I used to complain that Marble Slab wasn't more like the froyo scene and its pick all the toppings you want style. Five stars here is a big deal for me, because I don't really like ice cream. I don't like to be cold, so I do not enjoy cold food or beverages unless it is actually 25C+ outside. Consequently, I do not frequent Marble Slab despite its proximity to my home. However, on the occasion that I can be persuaded to partake of the frozen dessert known as "ice cream", Marble Slab is the only place I'm willing to visit. In addition to their wide selection of flavours, you can put whatever you want in your dessert. I always opt for gummy bears. I love gummy bears. They are essential in every aspect of life, but particularly in ice cream. After gummy bears in ice cream, I also appreciate Marble Slab because they make ice cream cakes and cupcakes. You can also buy their ice cream in pints for take-home, so you are readily equipped should heartache come your way (I suggest downloading your favourite show as well, it goes hand-in-hand with ice cream and a break-up). My first experience was horrible! I don't even know where to began... I went there around evening, there was only one employee on the job. I was having trouble communicating with her because English wasn't her first language. She was snacking on the job, very unprofessional. She did not mix the ice-cream well enough, the result was half melted, gooey, sloppy ice-cream. The prep table was dirty, she did not clean it before mixing, so my ice-cream had bits of sprinkles and other junk in it.I have heard great things about this place, so I was very disappointed. I am willing to give Marble Slab another chance in the future, but I won't be visiting this location for ice-cream! They should hire better employees, and give them better training before giving Marble Slab a bad rep. read more

I went here to redeem my Groupon. First of all, this was the last day to redeem the Groupon yet there were only 2 people on staff and a massive line up. Second, they charged us for tax. We redeemed 2 Groupons that day at different locations. The first one we went to (Namao) had great service - one of their employees was handing out free samples to everyone that was waiting in line. But more importantly, we weren't charged for tax at that location in addition to the Groupon. We explained this to the employee at the Marble Slab on Jasper Ave but she was making a fuss about having to pay tax and not marking our stamp cards (the Namao one marked our stamp cards). I realize that each location is a franchise but clearly there was poor communication as to what the Groupon entails. Lastly, the flavours we got were Birthday Cake and Coconut... but BOTH tasted like Sweet Cream! In fact, when I was sampling other flavours before ordering, they all tasted like Sweet Cream. This definitely isn't the case at other Marble Slabs I've been to. I don't know if each location mixes each ice cream flavour on-site, but I was really disappointed in the ice cream we got at the Jasper Ave location.
