It's been several years since my last visit to La Carraia. Happy to report that quality remains the same. Impressed they've opened up a third location out in Vernon. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 8:45pm). The worker was friendly and let us sample a couple flavours. There were 24 flavours of gelato and sorbet. I was shocked to see that the prices haven't changed; $4.90 (single), $5.90 (double) and $7.50 (triple). - Triple ($7.50) - pineapple, mango and passionfruit. Texture was luscious. Nice place to grab some gelato. They have a great selection and a lot of interesting flavours. I decided to go with the pear and brie which was refreshing and amazing. I also went with the After 8. It was okay but the mint was overwheming and not enough chocolate to balance it. However, I would for sure come back here again. I have tried this place two times before and today was the third time. The level of customer service is pretty low. The ice cream is not bad. There are not a lot of space to sit down for a while and enjoy (even before this COVID-19 situation) If I was alone I probably wouldn't have the third time experience. This is a little gem to visit for gelato, ice cream, sherbert; along with specialty coffees or teas. They have a fair amount of options of deliciousness made to make you taste buds water! The location is very small, but they do have a small seating area to sit and enjoy a cold desert or cold/hot drink of your choice. They sell the gelato in tubs if you wish to grab and go as well. Good gelato, confusing customer service. Maybe because this place is family owned some of the younger staff in the evenings are not trained in how to talk with, or help customers. Last time I was there, there was a line of about 20 people being held up by one couple trying every single flavor - twice. I don't know if these people were VIPs or buddies of the staff. But they didn't offer any samples to anyone else that I saw and this couple was there for at least 10 minutes, possibly much longer. They also had two staff, even if one staff member needed to catering to this couple's every whim, the other staff person did not make eye contact with customers, or say hello, or take orders as the line was building up. I feel in the very least with a long line, you could greet customers right away, try to take other orders of people in line, or let them know what the heck is going on. Maybe this second staff was doing something very important that we could just could not see? There would not be a line if both staff were taking orders in a reasonable amount of time. The gelato is good. It is worth waiting a few minutes in line. But is it worth waiting in line an indeterminate amount of time, until the staff decide if, and when they want to take orders? read more

Delicious gelato. Creamy and super flavourful. So many flavors to choose from. AUTHENTIC. This small joint on jasper avenue is a gem. They opened their first shop in florence italy. And miraculously the second was in edmonton. The gelato is authentic. I have been to italy and extensively sampled gelato all over the country. And ate it until i was sick before leaving. They have the typical popular flavours like chocolate, ferraro, and etc. But what i like is that they are quite inventful and have many flavours not offered anywhere else. Banana gelato was my favourite in italy and i have never been able to find it anywhere else. But la carriaia has it! My suggestion is to stick with the fruit flavours. The flavours are more intense and really are unique to this brand. I have never had a strawberry gelato as flavourful as this one. The best part of the gelato here are the chunks of fruit or nuts in every bite. This place is my go to place every time i drive by. read more

It's a small place but they typically have a big selection of gelato in a variety of delicious flavours. There are some vegan options as well as a wider choice of standard (milk-based) gelatos. This place is pretty fucking good. Okay okay... Ice cream shouldn't be as expensive as milk.. we get it. But these guys need some sort of accolade for having the creativity to transform that milk into something as creamy and delicious as what they are serving! I usually go for walk around downtown after dinner and I have this habit where I DONT bring my phone with me... if I had, I would be the "duke" of checking-in to this place... and I would be able to provide a picture. Reeeeeegardless. This place is very well kept on the corner of 109th and Jasper.. right beside that over-priced cinnamon bun place. The interior is very simple and clean with their branded wall paper all over the inside. NOW.... turn your eyes to the magnificent gelato cabinet..... here lies the incredible and delicious creations. This place has every flavour to tickle anyone's fancy... chocolate/vanilla or anything else fruity. Pick one! But get back here to try the other flavours! Also... We've been experiencing a bit of a heat wave the last while in Edmonton so having a gelataria around the corner from my office is awesome! And conveniently enough, today I didn't bring a lunch to work and decided at +25, gelato would make the perfect lunch. They have a wide variety of flavours available, that can be seen on the board outside their store front. However, in store, they only had about half of them. It's possible they rotate flavours or have them hiding in the back, but I didn't ask because the one I wanted was in the display case. They also have tiramisu, baked treats, and espresso drinks; however, I came for the gelato today I had one scoop of the toasted almond in a cup and it was exactly what I was hoping for. Super creamy, fresh with nutty notes and slivers of blanched almonds! You can also have the gelato in a cone, but I am a cup girl.. and if you are having a difficult time choosing between the options, dont be shy to ask for a sample/taste. The girl working was super friendly and helpful! The decor is super fresh and bright and there are a couple tables inside as well as out on the patio, so no matter the weather, you can can enjoy your gelato comfortably! If I wanted to suggest a place for gelato in Edmonton, I know know exactly the place to recommend: La Carraia was a lovely shop to visit on a recent evening. I tried three flavours for my dessert: Fig and cheese, Mixed berry, and Stracciatella. Each was delicious. It really reminded me of being in Florence and eating the gelato that I enjoyed in Italy. The indoor seating area isn't huge but we managed to find space for the three of us to eat (it was snowing outside). Each of us enjoyed a great dessert and we remarked on the decor including the custom wallpaper. The high stools were pretty standard. Yes, this is luxurious gelato and not the commonplace grocery store finds, and yes this place does limit the number of samples, but I noticed that they were able to provide my friend gelato that was not besmirched with nuts (allergy) and that we were each able to find delightful desserts. This location is found close to the LRT and other transit options. It is downtown but in an area where nearby free parking isn't impossible to find. It was a great place to enjoy dessert. read more

Ingredients imported from Italy and no artificial garbage. I sampled about 6 different flavours and it was hard to pick just one. So I picked two. The fig and the yogurt Nutella. I honestly can't wait to go back for more. I can only describe it as what I would imagine eating clouds to be like. And best of all, this place is open EVERY DAY and LATE! Walking downtown on a hot summer day can be rough but not if you are walking to La Carraia. It has a few cute tables outside and inside it's got air con and all the gelato you could want. I sat in to enjoy my mango gelato inside at the high tables and stools. They have about three tables there and a big washroom at the back. It sure has brought a taste of Florence to Edmonton. So many amazing flavours, beautiful quality ingredients makes for a damn good ice cream shop. It's not cheap, the quality is great you can't fault that. But the service wasn't that great, the server didn't seem interested in, well, serving. I wasn't offered samples of the flavours which I would think is standard. read more

I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I blame my horrible memory.. But it's never too late to give a solid 5 out of 5! And the choices they have are really unique!! Which is probably my favorite part about this place. They don't give you your standard vanilla and chocolate.. No no, You go in there and prepare yourself for some fig and cheese, pistachio, orange chocolate - nothing basic here at all! Both times I've gone I've ordered the fig and cheese because holy man that is the greatest thing I've ever had in my life. I was able to try some pistachio too but unfortunately it wasn't available the last time I stopped by. And it was definitely the best pistachio ice cream you will have. If it comes back it's a must because of the perfect balance of sweet and salty : it's amaaaaazing! Usually I would say I wish there was more of a selection but to be honest, the flavors here are SO unique so you always have something new to try. Best.Gelato.Ever You read correctly... La Carraia sources all their ingredients straight from Italy (except for fruits and dairy) and the quality really shows! They make their gelato so fresh that it only lasts for 24 hours. Even their dairy-free options were deliciously creamy and packed full of flavor. So far I've ordered the dairy-free watermelon, the La Carraia Mont Blanc (Coffee & White Chocolate flavor) and the pistachio. They were all equally delectable. I've also tried samples of their passion fruit & dairy-free grapefruit and can't wait to go back to tempt my tastebuds for more. There's a little Italian gem hidden in the heart of Edmonton! La Carraia Gelataria Cafe offers the most authentic Italian gelato I have ever tasted (but I haven't been to Italy so...). Named after a bridge in Florence, this tiny cafe is located on 109 street in downtown Edmonton. It's in The Mayfair, on the same side as Splash Poke and Snow Bear. There are 30 rotating flavours, except for the bases such as Pistachio. After sampling a bunch of flavours, I decided on a scoop of their Strawberry Cheesecake gelato. It was delicious and creamy! How else do I describe such an unforgettable delight? All of their ingredients are imported from Italy, aside from fruits and dairy. You won't taste any of that fake (insert swear) here. Their gelato is made daily and usually lasts in the store for about 24 hours. If you're looking for lactose or vegan free gelato, dark chocolate and sorbets are your go-tos. Everything is gluten-free aside from gelato with a cookie or cracker on top. For those who want something different, there's a gelato sandwich. It's your choice of gelato between two warm brioche buns, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I was too full from dinner to try it during my visit but I'm definitely going to get it next time. Aside from gelato, they offer drinks, fresh banana bread, and different types of cakes! Their cakes aren't made from gelato but have more of a mousse-like base. With the warmer temperatures coming (hopefully), I'm sure this place will be busy with gelato lovers.
