We were there yesterday at 4:20pm. The minute I saw that BIG dog, not only was it scary, but the barking inside a nice, homey restaurant was very loud and unpleasant. Even one of their servers and a child got scared.(looked a lot like a wolf). They came in like 3 minutes after we were seated. I complained to our waitress, Rada, and right away she tried defending them by saying it's a service dog. It had no collar nor a vest. I know a service dog when I see one. In addition to that, there were no blind, deaf people sitting at that table. Within less than 5 minutes, the owner and the dog left the premises. The restaurant looked a lot like a Chabad where a lot of Jewish people gather together and celebrate bar/bat mitzvahs, or other gatherings. Their menu has a lot to offer. Pastries, beverages, beer and wine. Vast selection of items and also vegan, plant based and vegetarian dishes. Also organic meals. Moving on with my review. My son and I ordered their small Hummus, ($9.95), which was very bland and needed some good seasoning such as pepper, oil, garlic etc.., we also ordered the same dish. 2 orders of their Quail Dinner that came with 2 salads, rice with some raw onions on top, grilled tomatoes, with fresh, hot pita bread. For both entrées, it was ($49.90). When the bill arrived, Rada removed the hummus without telling us. That was a very nice gesture. I didn't even say anything about it not being good. Our host Melida was also sweet and kind. We also got 4 pieces of their Fried Cheese Rolls ($2 per roll). The Lentil Soup was to die for. It was a very generous bowl ($7.95). I licked the bowl, and haven't had Lentil Soup in a very long time. Food was unbelievably delicious and priced appropriately for their portions. Also very fresh. Restaurant was clean along with their restrooms. One for each gender. Parking was shared with so many other businesses, had a nice size aquarium right by the entrance, and 2 more things. Former president Bill Clinton and the one and only tenor opera singer, Andrea Boccelli were photographed with the owner and placed on a wrong wall. Photos like that should be placed somewhere where everyone can see it. I may or may not return. It was barely 5:10pm, and they closed their blinds saying the reflection of the cars is bothering the photographer, when there were no cars nearby. In their amenities section, it says that they have a patio. Please update your system. There is no patio seating.

[Atmosphere & service]: There is a mural with two people baking saj bread and there are about half a dozen tables for in-person dining. I placed an in-person order and unfortunately the service was very slow. I eventually got my order after waiting close to 15 minutes despite the lack of customers. [Menu]: Yelp's top highlighted items are Chicken Shawarma, Beef Shawarma, and Spinach Pie. They also have a display case of various baked items. Other items they sell here include Mediterranean specialty pizzas, plates (e.g. lamb gyro), Mediterranean breakfast, and flatbreads. *** Beef Shawarma Wrap (Beef, spread of hummus, fresh tomatoes, onions, and tahini sauce rolled and pressed to a crunchy toast - $18.00): The order came with two wraps. The filling was gooey and messy, but it had a very distinct flavor profile. Not too bad at all. Mini Spinach Pie (Raw spinach mixed with diced onion and sumac herb - 1 piece $2.00): It was not my cup of tea as it tasted very sour. *** A solid 3.5-star for the wrap, but bumped down due to inefficient service.

GG will call you sir or ma'am when you come in the door, and if you ask him very nicely he will tell you that he is Armenian, and that he started this place after being unable to control the quality of the result at a pizza chain. If you pay further attention to him, and read the menu carefully, and you scan past all the American style pizza, you will see that there are a few Armenian dishes down at the bottom of the menu. Now here's where you do yourself a solid. You order yourself the traditional Armenian mkhlu, and a Georgian temouri. Yes I know you can't pronounce these, but GG is polite and will not correct you. The mkhlu is a delicately spiced tomato omelet from his homeland, with lots of cilantro and paprika and delicate spices; and the tamouri is a very thin pizza with meat and cheese, again with incredible delicate spicing. There are certainly more expensive restaurants in LA, but I'm telling you from the bottom of my Yelp Elite status, that GG's tiny, clean little hole in the wall, is the best restaurant in Los Angeles right now.

We got four pieces of arais per order and it comes with a small side salad. We also got a big cucumber salad on the side too. The arais were absolutely delicious and totally reminds me of what I had in Israel. I liked the ribeye slightly better than the beef but both were juicy and delicious. Once in a while, one gets to step into a restaurant that has the ability to whisk them right back…read moreto childhood memories; a foreign place; sounds of a market; and the equivalent of a culinary trip on the spice Trail. Arais Machne Yehuda his one such place. Living up to its namesake, the Machne Yehuda market in Jerusalem, made famous, not only for its colorful stalls and sellers, but also for the outstanding food one can get at the market. But in order to pull that off, you need the perfect storm of the following ingredients: caring, sensitive, owners who treat you like a household guest. Culinary wizards who understand their ingredients and know how to make the best out of them. Appreciative crowd, who knows good food. Period. When all these come together, what you get is a touch of magic. And Arais is exactly that. A touch of magic on Ventura Boulevard. Let's talk some of the ingredients. The warm chickpeas (hummus) that came to the table, at a perfect temperature, and with just a hint of lemon, were the ABSOLUTE BEST chickpeas I had anywhere outside of Jerusalem. I don't say this lightly. Most Mediterranean, restaurants and almost all Israeli restaurants pride themselves on their chickpea preparations. There's a saying in Israel that Israel will forever argue about which chickpeas are the best, which chickpeas make the best dish, which preparation of chickpeas is better than the others. Basically Israeli's lives revolve around evaluating chickpeas. So by telling you, this was the best I've had outside of Jerusalem, what I'm really trying to say is that these weren't "good chickpeas for Tarzana", but rather some of the best anywhere in the world! And that was just the side dish! The formula is a known one. Take acidic vegetables as a side dish, mix them with rich and fatty meat dishes, where the acid of the vegetables in the pickles cuts through the richness; couple that with side dishes, where each dish adds to the overall experience; and what you get is exactly that magic that I told you about earlier on. When you mix that with knowledgeable owners and and welcoming atmosphere, what you get is a short trip to far away lands. Arais Machne Yehuda on every chord. If I have one single comment, and trust me that taking into account, the totality of the experience that was amazing, I would tell you that the pita bread that the Arais came in, was a bit salty. I let the owners know my dislike of tahini, something that has cost me relationships, and has earned me the jeers of many an Israeli; but they insisted time and time again that maybe I should try it "just this time". I explained that once every five years I do in fact, try tahini just to find out that I still don't like it, but my words fell on deaf ears. And you know what? They were right. Both the tahini and chimichurri sauces were perfect accompaniment for the rich lamb meatballs, nestled in the pitas. I was expecting a little bit more heat and the chimichurri to complement the tangy and oily taste emanating from good olive oil and chopped herbs. But alas, the heat came from the deep-fried jalapeños that I had on the side. The look on one of the owners faces when I ate six of them in a row and then proclaimed they were "mild", was priceless. Since this was my first time there, I also got fat chunks of deep fried and then roasted potatoes, a perfect accompaniment to the already rich meal. I highly recommend this Mediterranean/Israeli gem in the heart of Tarzana. If you're ever looking for Israeli food, this, my friends, is it!
