I had an excellent experience here--I went in to have someone look at a mole I was concerned about, and anticipated an introductory appointment and then a follow-up to actually do any kind of procedure. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that after signing in I waited for a minimal amount of time in the waiting area (10-15 minutes) and again in the actual room (5-10 minutes) and that they were able to take care of it immediately. I was given several choices in how I wanted to proceed, along with the risks, potential outcomes, and her initial assessment, and then she immediately removed the offensive thing. I received a call a couple of days later with the results (benign!) and am going in tomorrow to have the sutures taken out. The whole thing was surprisingly quick and efficient and I'm so relieved that I finally went in to get this taken care of. So far the area is healing nicely and it doesn't look like I will even have a scar. read more

She used to be my dermatologist when I lived in DC and did a decent job. Things took a turn when I went in for cosmetic work (lip filler). Craziness ensued. This Dr injected the filler into above my upper lip directly skipping my actual lip line. It was the most painful experience I think in a Drs office and as I wriggled and squirmed and cried in the chair in pain she kept going with the injection. Even her assistants tried to pin me to the chair. I looked hideous afterward with my area between nose and lip all filled with injection fluid and bruising. FYI her office doesn't even offer a refund if you don't like it. I will never be returning. Waste of over 500$. I think this also could warrant a malpractice claim. read more

I've been going to this practice for a number of years. I've met with Dr. Skelsey only a few times when I needed/wanted special services. She's great, takes as much time as you need. Who I usually see is nurse practitioner Kylene Davis. She's wonderful! Kind, patient, answers all questions, gives as much time as you need, she's clear in her instructions. I can't say enough about her care, knowledge or demeanor. Highly unusual in health care. read more

I saw Dr. Skelsey for a whitehead close to my ear which I wanted removed. She had an assistant take a biopsy (without telling me she required it) , then Dr. Skelsey removed the whitehead. Five days later I had significant pain and swelling and went to my GP, who Dx an infection at the site of the removal. When I returned to Dr. Skelsey, she was dismissive, although she did admit it was infected. As a result, I had to see my GP twice and an ENT doctor once because the infection caused the ear canal to close. My GP told me that Dr. Skelsey had nicked the cartilage during the procedure, which led to the infection. I thought the infection had cleared up but now, 15 months later, the infection on the ear has returned - my new dermatologist stated it probably was related to Dr. Skelsey nicking the cartilage originally . This apparently will be bothersome the remainder of my life. read more

Looking for different practice! The last visit Dr. Lewis rushed as some doctors called sick that day. She did full body scan in less than 10min after I waited whole hour to be seen. Today I scheduled for 8 am to make sure I am the first one. At 9 am nurse offered me a blanket, to stay warm while I am waiting. Again, very rushed visit. When I asked for my medical records they told me I need to pay. Regardless, my family will be switching. Never again!!!! read more

She provided the services needed however, I strongly suspect she and her staff are trying to exploit people in a dire situation. I received services and paid my copy. Inexplicably, I get a bill nearly 4 months after the fact stating I owe money and that they'll release a collection agency on me. Very odd too that their agency is based out of PA and mentions her by name. I have my documentation and will work to resolve this. However, this matter may merit being brought to the attention of the Maryland Attorney General's Office of consumer protection. read more

I bet that your satisfaction with this practice depends on your health needs and possibly your age. Dr. Skelsey is very focused on the skin cancer market--she has training and equipment to reduce scarring after surgery, etc. I would trust her on that, but it is very difficult to actually get Skelsey herself to see you unless you do have cancer. We have been with her practice since it was small, and while she has solved the problem of rude front office staff that used to plague her, I'm looking for a new derm. If you need a mole check, the PA will do it. The PA also handles most patients who are not cancer patients. That's okay if you have a routine problem such a wart that the PA can easily handle, but patients should be told this is the model they are using. The PA who saw me last time is arrogant, one of those annoying people who knows everything about everything without hearing a single word you say. I won't be going back. That same PA badly managed a problem another family member was having, and because she missed the diagnosis, it took a lot longer to heal than it needed to, required many more appointments and time away from work. I am the one who finally figured out the problem, a different doctor confirmed my suspicions, and he finally got the problem fixed. read more

AVOID CYNTHIA WALLACE AT ALL COSTS. I can't emphasize this enough: FIND ANOTHER PROVIDER. She provides terrible care and customer service. Do not give her your money. Learn from my mistakes!! I contacted the state medical board. July: I was given a diagnosis and prescribed a cream as treatment. My insurance didn't cover the cream so I when I received the denial letter with criteria, I called the physicians office asking them to call it in again it fitting the criteria the insurance was asking for (which they agreed I met). They said they would call it in. Upon leaving my appt I was scheduled for a 745am appt on a Friday in August. Multiple calls later, STILL DON'T HAVE THE CREAM. August: I arrive to my 745am appt and was told I'M NOT ON THE CALENDAR. I had to wait 30 minutes for them to fit me in. Multiple calls later, STILL DON'T HAVE THE CREAM. September: Multiple calls later, STILL DON'T HAVE THE CREAM. October: Multiple calls later, STILL DON'T HAVE THE CREAM. I got a confirmation call on Wednesday for an 730am appt on Friday. Upon arriving Friday morning at 730am the doors were locked and when I called the office, the voicemail said phones were not being answered until 830am. I waited until 8am when someone showed up and apologized that the door was locked. I said I had been knocking and calling. I talked to my provider Cynthia Wallace who had been inside and tried to tell me the door was unlocked and I could've called?!? The door was locked and the phones weren't being answered!!!! She gave me no apology and was completely heartless. I was speechless. I chose to not stay for my appointment and walked out saying I'll never return again after all the issues between my treatment and the customer service. Cynthia Wallace does not demonstrate any care for her patients. It's been three months, multiple medical bills, two appointments for which I showed up and I either wasn't on their schedule or the door was locked for 30 min and I was given no apology, and still no treatment that I came in for in the first place. read more

Cynthia Cameron is professional and I always have a good experience with her. I am always anxious when I go to see her but she makes us feel so at ease. I would recommend her highly. Bring your pocketbook because it is not cheap but what good health care is? Always can get me in on my schedule. I was at a dinner party years ago where people were discussing the births of their babies. After I spoke about my obstetrician and what a fabulous job he did, my host gasped and said, "My friend SUED him!" So--you see--everyone experiences a service provider differently. I, too, am surprised to see so many low rates here. I have had several occasions to go to the office with questionable things (I've had skin cancer in the past). My background is in health care administration and I was a vice president at a major health care institution. Because of my experience, I think I am in a good position to offer my evaluation of Dr. Skelsey's practice. My mother and I have been patients for over five years. The practice is well run, follows all appropriate health and safety guidelines and Dr. Skelsey and her staff are attentive, thoughtful, and efficient. Initially, I took my mother for Moh's surgery. My mother had advance Parkinson's disease and needed extra TLC, in addition to the procedures. Dr. Skelsey did a wonderful surgical job and removed numerous, difficult to reach, carcinomas from my mother's skin. All the while, she and her staff were extremely kind to her. I see Dr. Skelsey regularly for skin checkups and minor procedures. I am always treated with respect and courtesy and actually look forward to my office visits. Staff remember me and always have something nice to say. The more important reason I see Dr. Skelsey is because she is a very skilled and knowledgeable professional. Because of my job, I know some of the best dermatologists in the country and I could go anywhere. But I don't need to because Dr. Skelsey is among the best practitioners in the area. Dr. Skelsey's office allows booking online through ZocDoc. After booking an appointment and receiving a pending confirmation, I went to my appointment. Dr. Skelsey's office claimed to not have my appointment on file and after further research stated I had booked an unavailable time online. The office never once attempted to reach me by phone nor email to relay this information, however they claimed they had called me. The front desk was very unprofessional and did not offer a substitute appointment or to squeeze me in - they simply said they didn't have anything available all week. I will not be returning to this office. read more

Dr Skelsey oversees my child's burn marks. Everything she has done to her has had tremendous results on the scars. Every time we travel to a new place she always recommends a dermatologist there who is equally smart and sharp. I can't imagine going through this without her. Just a warning about this office. Time is on their side.- they don't care how long they make patients wait--they definitely take the name "patient" too literally! I made an appointment and had to wait 1.5 hours to be seen. When I expressed my exasperation about missing payment at work having to wait there and questioned why I would trust her caring for me medically, all Skelsey had to say was this isn't starting on a good tone and would I like to reschedule! That clenched it for me--she really is clueless about respecting other's time. If a simple thing like an appointment can't be honored, I don't see why I would trust her with my health care. I don't believe the 1.5 hour wait to be seen had much to do with my being 10 minutes late-- her office had very few "patients" waiting. I don't know why an appointment is made-- which is a verbal contract--for a specific time. This is not honored here. I'm sending her an invoice for 1.5 hours of my time. read more

She has been very efficient and conservative with biopsies and removal when necessary. The whole process has been reassuring and worry-free. We waited months for an appointment - because the pediatrician recommended her, we waited it out (also in the waiting room for 1h). My child had a very small lump in the arm pit. When Dr Skelskey finally took one look, she turned around grabbed a needle and stuck it into the lump! Her diagnosis was correct (some whitish liquid came out and the lump is gone) - but it frightened the wits out of me and my child. A small warning would have been nice. She squeezed out the lump (ignoring screaming child), brushed off my shock and swept out. I'm laughing now but it was pretty weird. Felt like a wartime scene, the doctor too busy to see the routine stuff we were bothering her with, when all the other patient rooms were full with emergency botox cases. Awful experience with billing here. The supervisor was very snappy with me on the phone, trying to tell me to call my insurance when I was literally trying to give them my updated address. My insurance has my correct address. Rather than help, she was lecturing me on how long she's been a billing supervisor. Waste of my time and quite the scam. read more

I was really surprised to read the review for Dr. Skelsey after having been in her office twice for treatment. While the first time did take longer than expected to be seen, I thought she was terrific. She was very attentive, and listened to my concerns. I was there for a cosmetic procedure and it was a first time for me, so I was very concerned. She could not have been nicer and attentive. I felt she was honest in setting my expectations, offered me an opportunity to come back for a short follow up at no charge, and overall did a great job. I have been to a number of dermatologists over the years as I am from the area. Some of the other dermatologists that I have been to have been high pressure in terms of selling these services that are not covered by insurance and are a luxury in today's economy. I saw Mariella Purvis and I was very impressed. She listened to my concern, was to-the-point, direct, exuded competence, and balanced my time and the time of the other patients well by checking in on someone else while leaving me some needed time for a biopsy decision. Proceed at your own risk! Tomorrow marks the three-week anniversary of my botched Mohs surgery at the hands of this really nice practice but one requiring serious reflection. My face was left open for 9 hours and 20 (!) minutes for what they tell you online is a three to four hour procedure. I have yet to receive a truthful explanation why this occurred. The three vastly different and hardly-believable explanations (not enough operating rooms, schedule system change, incorrect biopsy results) and countless apologies the doctor gave my wife in the waiting room do not make up for the true, literal shock my body experienced, lost work and lost income after it took the doctor and three nurses working together and constantly an hour and 45 minutes to close me up. read more

While my mole did not alarm them they were kind and listened with compassion to my concern. This dermatology office is awesome. I was examined by Nurse Practitioner Kyleen Davis. Honestly, she was better then any doctor that I have seen in the past. She had a great demeanor and was very thorough. During my exam, she identified a small precancerous spot on my cheek. I had no idea that's what it was. I went back to my old doctor and he agreed with Nurse Practitioner Davis. I asked him why he didn't catch it the year before b/c the same spot was there, and he said he must have overlooked it. Needless to say, I went back to Nurse Practitioner Davis and she administered a blue light treatment to the area - the spot is gone, although I have to go back in 6 month for a checkups. I will say the blue light treatment stings a little, but is tolerable and my face was red for about 4 days. However, everything cleared up nicely and my face even looks ten years younger. read more

I went in to have two suspicious moles checked at the referral of my doctor. I screwed up the appointment day by a week, but they still managed to fit me in, which was really nice considering it's obviously a big practice. Nurse Practitioner Cynthia Cameron was awesome, very down to earth, answered all my questions, didn't rush me. She did a same day biopsy and I didn't even feel it. I did not get much time with the main Dr. Skelsey, but she had clearly been briefed and checked everything out. That's what you get when you have a famous specialist. I was perfectly satisfied though, she answered my questions. I'm sure the bill will be high! But am going back for another mole removal. read more

Whether he was a student or trainee, a man was in the room as I was receiving a sensitive treatment and I was not asked if I would mind, not asked anything, as a matter of fact - I was just another wallet to walk out of the room as quickly as I walked in. I do not have to lie about the unprofessional and aggressively inconsiderate treatment I received during my appointment with Dr. Skelsey. There was a man throughout the duration of my treatment and I had requested it be just Dr. Skelsey and myself and she quickly dismissed me. I also paid $700 to be treated like crap. My experience with the doctor at the office was fine initially (it was not Dr. Skelsey herself I saw), but one of the receptionists had a ridiculously rude attitude. She ruined the entire experience. She was rude to me when I tried to *return* the doctor's call after I'd left the office. She then hung up on the pharmacist who called to verify a change the doctor made to my prescription (because he pointed out her extremely rude attitude towards him). The doctor did not bother to call the pharmacy back, nor would the pharmacy call the office again after speaking with this particular front desk employee, so my prescription was not updated. We all hear of rude receptionists and deal with disgruntled customer service employees more often than we would hope, but for a small practice to employ someone so rude to interface with patients is very unfortunate. Even the pharmacist recommended not going back to this office after having to deal with them over the phone, and trust me, I won't. I work hard for my money so I won't waste it on anyone who allows their staff to treat paying customers this way. read more

Seeing the reviews, I felt like I should add my input. I agree that the waiting time is excessive (I was there about an hour each of my 3 appointments). However, I saw the staff being very patient with the slow-moving elderly patients there for skin cancer, and did not find them rude or off-putting to me personally either. I wanted that kind of expertise -- not a fan of scars -- and felt like the nurse and the doctor did their jobs well. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call at 8PM the night of my surgery from the doctor herself, asking if I was doing OK (it was a simple procedure, so the concern was especially nice). I will use them again if I have something else that needs removing, but the next time I will build in an hour or more extra time before making plans afterward. It seems that in Chevy Chase, that is the norm for the top docs (sad, since I do value my time and would pay a premium for them to manage theirs better, but my eye doc's waiting room is even more crowded and with an even longer wait!) read more

I could not have had a worse experience today with one of Dr. Skelsey's PA's. It started with being seen 35 minutes late. 25 minutes in when I inquired about timing, I received an exasperated response from the office nurse stating that there was nothing she could do while walking away from me at the same time. Once the PA actually made it to the room, she rushed through the appointment as though she didn't have time for me after I was kept waiting for 35minutes! The duration of my appointment was 5 minutes and I was made to feel uncomfortable asking any questions. I will never return to this practice again and advise you stay away as well if you expect to be treated with even the littlest bit of compassion and care. read more

I have been a skin cancer patient of Dr. Skelsey for over ten years. She is the best physician that I have ever been to in my 50 plus years of seeking medical care. I read some of the earlier reviews posted to YELP and wonder if the patients were in touch with reality, or perhaps had some grudge to bear. First, there is not a more caring doctor in the Washington, DC area than Dr. Skelsey. Second, she is at the top of the practice in Mohs skin cancer surgery. Every physician that I have spoken with about my skin cancer, has recommended Dr. Skelsey. Third, you have to experience the very bad news that your face, or nose, or ear is going to be opened up to remove a basal cell, squamous cell or melanoma, to understand how good she is. I have had incisions all over my face, and do a great deal of public speaking. No one has ever mentioned the remaining scars, because she does such an excellent job of closing the incision. She is so good, in fact, that she teaches at Georgetown Medical School and has interns in her office to learn about Mohs surgery. The reason that she is listed as among the Best Doctors every year, on virtually every list, is that she is the BEST! Also, with an experienced Physician Assistant like Cynthia Wallace, outstanding nurse staff across the board, and the wonderful Deidre at the front desk, it could not be a more welcoming practice. I highly recommend Dr. Skelsey, if you have the misfortune to have skin cancer. read more

Cynthia Cameron is the nurse practitioner at this office and she is awesome! She is extremely knowledgeable, down to earth, and unlike the other providers I've seen here, she takes the time to listen to my concerns and doesn't make me feel rushed. She's absolutely adorable and has the best bedside manner. I will only go back to this office to see her. I was disappointed in my visit with doctor Skelsey, who made me feel unimportant and who has zero personality. read more
