I have used various dermatologists through the years but Maria Bertagnolli at Georgetown Dermatology is in a league of her own. She is knowledgeable, and conscientious, and takes her time to make sure everything is seen. Often dermatologists quickly go over your body and don't talk about what they see. Maria takes her time and describes everything she sees so that you have confidence that nothing has been missed, even that dangerous looking dark spot that you were sure was cancer and that she identifies as just extra melanin that is normal even before you can ask her. read more

I have been a patient and customer at this office, but my recent experience at the front desk was very disappointing. I stopped in to purchase a lotion, and the front desk employee with dark hair looked me up and down in a way that made me feel unwelcome, as if I was inconveniencing her. Her attitude throughout the interaction felt dismissive and unprofessional. When I later expressed my dissatisfaction to another front desk employee/cashier with grey hair, she also responded with an abrupt and defensive tone instead of trying to address my concerns. As I see other people have left same reviews . I do want to say that Maria Bertangolli has been amazing. She has always treated me with kindness and professionalism, addressed all of my concerns, and helped resolve my skin issues. She is the reason I continue to come to this practice, and I truly appreciate the excellent care she provided. read more

The quality of medical care seems very good. Dr Kupiec is nice and focused. But the admin owoman who handles checking out and insurance is rather brusque and so I often leave there shaking my head at how curt she is with me and others. read more

Maria Bertagnolli is superb - thorough and warm. The woman who checks you out at the end of an appointment, handles initial payment, and schedules next appointments, also is wonderful. But - boy - they are terrible at managing patient expectation for wait-times when arriving at the office. I understand if my care-provider is running late because of an extended earlier patient, but no one communicates at all with patients who are waiting to let them know about delayed appointment starts. This has happened to me every time I've been there - today I waited 30 minutes after my appointment time to be taken into an exam room (and I had to ask the receptionist about how long a delay - "oh, she'll be seeing you shortly"), then ANOTHER 30 minutes before I finally walked back out to reception to express my outrage at the lack of communication. Another patient who was waiting even said to me "this is true every time I come here too" - so I'm not the only one. AND - one of the staff told me they've talked about this issue at staff meetings, but still no one does anything about it. It isn't that hard people: just tell patients about delays when they arrive and every so often after that. read more

Went to visit Georgetown Dermatology for the first time this summer. The front of office staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. All of the forms I needed to fill out prior to my appointment were easily available online. Parking near the office was quick and easy to find. Upon arriving at the office I was greeting by welcoming staff and taken care of promptly. Everyone who cared for me during my visit were patient and kind. I felt comfortable and was able to engage in conversation with staff about my questions and concerns. I met with the nurse practitioner on staff, Maria Bertagnolli. She was fantastic. She made me feel at ease and offered me a variety of useful information regarding the questions I had about my skin. At no point did I feel rushed or brushed over. Maria provided ample time for me to engage with her and the other staff member present. The appointment was smooth and I felt heard and supportive. Quality of physicians/RNs/staff is great and I feel like I'm in good hands after a melanoma. Two suggestions though: 1. Don't ask a patient if they have a problem with a male physician's assistant while he is standing right there - patients may feel uncomfortable saying no in that circumstance. 2. Do not comment on a patient's underwear matching their nails. I have had both of these things happen to me there, hence the 4 stars. read more

Maria is the most thorough and meticulous dermatologist I have ever been to. She will check every area of your skin and will tell you what every little mark is. Strap yourselves in... TL:dr: If you value your time, your privacy, and your money, you'll save yourself some trouble and go somewhere else for your dermatological needs. Of my 117 Yelp reviews as of this writing, only 9 of them have been for one star - this place is just that bad. To quote another review: ". . . if anyone is reading this review, please save yourself this headache. Don't ever try and do an appointment over lunch breaks, in the afternoon, in any time that you're pressed for time, or really [any time] at all." I choose not to give my money to offices that treat patients this poorly - and I wouldn't have gone back this time, but my doctor sent me there and it had been a while so I forgot how horrible an experience visiting here can be. How bad is it? To give you a general idea, of the 15 reviews posted as I write this (don't forget the 'not recommended' at the bottom of the page! Those can be very telling), 10 of them (around 70%) are 1- or 2-star reviews. Draw your own conclusions, but at those odds you're heading for a bad time. Here's my review from today: I finally left their office after spending an hour and 15 minutes waiting, ignored and unseen, in their tiny, cramped, and hot waiting room. I do not exaggerate. In fact, there were several times today while I was waiting during which all the 15 or so chairs in the waiting room were filled, and new arrivals had to stand in that tiny hot cramped room. I stood, to give an older gentleman my seat. Previously I stopped going to this place for three reasons: 1) The equipment looks like it's from the Soviet era, by which I mean it appears ancient and outdated; 2) The walls between the rooms are paper thin and can't possibly satisfy the privacy requirements of HIPAA as you can hear everything said while you wait in one (often for long periods of time); and 3) The last time I was there I was waiting in a tiny Soviet-era medical room with the Soviet-era equipment, and I overheard two female doctors talking about getting the most money from patients - I believe they said something about holidays coming, so I must have been there in the late Fall last time as well. I should add that at my visit today, after about an hour of waiting, the office manager took several opportunities to loudly proclaim that there was a long wait because of "walk-ins." In other words, "you regular patients are waiting so long because some people don't make appointments," by which she meant me, and my doctor who was trying to get me seen there. However I was not a walk-in: My doctor (in the same building) was concerned, and had arranged with them for me to be looked at immediately, and the receptionist was looking for someone to blame. When I attempted to communicate this to the office manager, she had a male employee come out to the waiting room to 'make sure everything was ok.' Talk about unnecessary confrontations. The mentality of the employees here is clearly "patients come second by far." Never again. If you read the other 1-star reviews you will see others have raised many of the same issues as I do here. Unfortunately this last visit happened on a Friday afternoon, and I didn't have time to make another appointment with a different dermatologist, so I went home, untreated with whatever it was my primary care wanted to have them review. I suppose it'll keep till next week. Frustrating. Do yourself a favor and skip the experience, odds are will you have a horrible time. PS. If you read the reply from their office to a one-star comment here on Yelp, you'll read unprofessional and snarky remarks from their manager directed to a patient who was also unhappy about how clearly you can hear everyone in the rooms ("We will suggest that our staff not eat potato chips since this is not healthy anyway. Thank you for that."). This is the type of people who run this medical practice: Uncaring about honest concerns of patients, ready to laugh at them about those concerns, and unnecessarily confrontational with patients. Fun times. PPS. "Thank you" Drs Kauffmann et al for calling me at my home in the evening to "get my perspective" on this as I believe you said in your message. However, this IS my perspective on it. Perhaps you might lavish some of this attention on the patients who are actually waiting around in your office. As for your likely HIPAA violations, maybe get some white noise generators. I originally consulted this practice because it is close to where I was living at the time. The nurse practitioner Maria is the only provider I have seen, but I intentionally sought an appointment with her recently because my original consultation a few years ago went very well. I once saw a dermatologist in VA whom I did not find very warm natured, she was like a living Barbie doll. Maria takes time to explain information clearly and to make sure that a visit meets patient needs. I really recommend this practice. read more

I have lots of sun damage as I'm very fair skinned. A specialty is the blue light treatment to help remove precancerous conditions. Dr. Lisa Kauffman at Georgetown Dermatology is a wonderful clinician. I have been a patient for almost 10 years. Every interaction with Dr. Kauffman, the nurses, and front desk staff has been superb. On a couple of occasions, I had appointments with the nurse practitioner; she was fabulous as well. The parking lot is a little hinky, very tight passageways to exit from the upper levels. Very thorough examinations. Entire staff is exceptionally skilled. Pleasant front desk personnel. They are always fully booked and the wait time to see one of the dermatologists can be months, but the Nurse Practitioner is highly skilled and takes patients within a week or so if calling. That's how I managed to get an appointment last year when the dermatologist I had been seeing for years left the area. I worried about waiting 4 months to see one of the doctors. She gave me a more thorough exam than any previous dermatologist I have seen over the years. Since that time I make all of my appointments with Maria because I have total confidence in her. The Maria, the Nurse Practitioner is good but it is almost impossible to see one of the two doctors. i would not recommend this practice because the billing department is a mess. When I tried to get reimbursed from Medicare Advantage last year, I was told that Georgetown had received the reimbursement . I called Georgetown at the beginning of January and have been given the run around. First I was told they had fired the billing person for incompetence but would process my reimbursement. A month later I was told they had a huge backlog but would get to me soon. The next time I was told the same thing. Today I was told that the billing staff had been out on medical leave but was now back. And the person answering the phone would email the billing staff today. I asked how long it would take to get my money. I was told that the Dr has to sign off on this and she is on vacation until early May. In short -one excuse after another. read more

Originally visited based on a recommendation by our trusted endocrinologist. Have never seen Dr. Kauffman, but both Dr. Kupiec and Maria Bertagnoli, FNP have proven to be knowledgeable and understanding. Have ongoing issues with moles that are oddly-shaped, so the usual steps for helping determine whether benign (ABCDE from the National Cancer Society) are either not applicable or difficult to discern. Normally go once per year for a complete skin check and have never been disappointed. It may not be the most comfortable position to be in, with two folks closely examine every inch, but it is necessary and they are always completely thorough and professional. When some moles raise concerns and need to be removed, the service has been quick and effective, with barely noticeable scarring. Have had two other occasions for more 'routine' issues and have been pleased both of those times as well. read more

After burning my daughter with the laser during hair removal, the practice claimed that the monstrous burn and resulting swelling was a reaction to Aquaphor. They paid for subsequent visits to check on her, each time claiming that she must have an allergy to Aquaphor. I signed consent so any action would have been futile. An apology, I suppose would have been an admission of guilt, but how disappointing. If I could give no stars, that would be too many. read more

The medical staff is good but the billing department are crooks. Medicare told me I could be billed $46 because I had met my deductible. But the nasty women in the billing office allegedly told me I owed $219 which she demanded I pay. this was back in February and now beginning of June the finance office has have refused to return the $173 overcharging me. This is illegal and a crime. The medical staff should demand honest finance personnel. read more

I have used this facility many times over the past several years and have always found the staff and doctors competent and caring, and did not have to wait long to be treated. Parking is somewhat awkward but manageable. My only complaint is that on my last visit I found the waiting room had been reduced to half its size from my previous visit and it was uncomfortable and cramped, with nowhere to hand coats or hats. read more
