Dr. Ali Hendi is a highly skilled surgeon. He is also a genuinely likable person, as were all the staff-members that assisted in my procedure. My daughter is a dermatologist and recommended Dr. Hendi to me after extensively researching MOHS surgeons in my area of the country. Dr. Hendi's office is a good two-hour drive from my home, but it was well worth the effort to get there. His practice is located in a very nice suburb of Washington D.C., and there is a Marriott Courtyard just down the street from Dr. Hendi's office, (a very short walk away). I booked a room in the Marriott since my surgery was scheduled to begin early in the morning and I didn't want to fight rush-hour traffic. There is a Metro station (again, a short walking distance away), so we rode into the city for a nice dinner the evening before my procedure. The hotel was very accommodating about allowing a late check-out the next afternoon. Dr. Hendi's office and waiting area are very well-appointed and comfortable, but being able to walk back and lie down following the procedure while waiting for the staining process to be completed, (to ensure no additional tissue needed to be removed -- a lengthy process), was a real advantage. I cannot say enough about Dr. Hendi's skills. I had MOHS surgery on my cheek on August 21, 2019. The area that had to be removed was much larger than I imagined it would be and I fully expected some evidence of the surgery to remain forever given the amount of tissue that had to be removed. When planning the placement of sutures to close the wound, Dr. Hendi had me smile and make normal facial expressions while he planned and drew a pattern for his sutures on my cheek. Now, just a little over a month later the wound is fully closed, and even family members can't tell that anything happened unless I point out the area. I have started the massage procedure that Dr. Hendi included in his very comprehensive and easy to follow post-surgery instructions. His assistant assured me that after following the massage regimen, no one but Dr. Hendi, his staff and myself will ever know anything happened. I fully believe that, although with the way the wound has currently healed I am perfectly satisfied if this is as good as it gets! I hope that I have developed enough renewed respect for sunscreen that I never need MOHS surgery again, but if I do there is only one place I will be going for the procedure, regardless of where I live or how long a flight I have to make.... The experience started the first moment I was on the phone in order to make an appointment. It was incredible to have a caring voice over the phone, someone that actually cared. Yesterday I had my cyst removed from my head. It had been there for years, and I was so scared of taking it out. Upon arrival the front desk staff were so kind and they made me feel at ease. Once in the back Dr. Hendi's assistant nurse (angel) took down all the details. She was not in a hurry and she really wanted all the details. Later the Doctor came in who greeted me as if I were a long lost cousin or something. I did not remember I had seen him in 2009 about the same cyst, he mentioned that he had seen that in the notes. He was so kind, he listened and he did not pressure me.... at all.... we both decided it is time to take it out. The nurse prepared me along with another nurse who was in training, also an angel. They helped me relax by talking to me and the new nurse even asked if I wanted to hold her hand. YES!!!!! and that helped so much. When everything was ready, and the area was shaved and numbed the doctor came in with such a beautiful energy. I truly did not feel the time go by, we talked about life, where we met our spouses, kids and anything else... he was great at keeping the focus off the cyst for me... and then it was done. He closed up with the stitches..... and jokingly said it was a boy... it was huge, I have to be honest with you... I go back next week for check of the area... It is only day one and I am comfortable, they sent me home with some Tylenol and Advil... I can shower tomorrow and put Vaseline on the area so it does feel dry, and will help with healing. Beware... MOHS surgery is a very traumatic experience so make sure you do your research before coming in! Unfortunately, I had a very negative experience after visiting Dr. Hendi's office recently. I was so sure that I did not have basal cell carcinoma on my left nostril because I did NOT see any symptoms since my last biopsy from three months ago. It tested positive for basal cell carcinoma but it disappeared after the biospy. Dr. Hendi searched for it and he could not find it. I jokily told him I could always come back. He would not let it go and then suggested another biopsy and I agreed to it. I thought it would be a shave just like my other biopsies in the past. Unfortunately, he took advantage of my naivety and cut a HUGE CHUNK from my nose. I was in shock and I felt rage because the result showed NEGATIVE (normal skin). I confronted him afterwards and he said he could SEE basal cell carcinoma. That is when I knew he was lying because we cannot see cancer cells with naked eyes. I was deceived and I also felt I was coerced into unnecessary MOHS procedure. Dr. Hendi, thanks a lot. I will never trust any doctors because of you. I am very disappointed with my surgery, sutures and resulting scar. I chose Dr. Ali Hendi because he practices MOHS and I was looking to minimize the removal of healthy tissue and of course the size of the scar on my arm. My dermatologist had told me that I may get a 4-5 cm scar (less than 2 inches) which at the time seemed huge to me. I now have an irregular, bumpy almost 3 inch scar and I deeply regret my decision. read more

Talented Doctor, but TERRIBLE new billing practices, so I left after being a patient for more than 10 years. Plays the game lots of dermatologists play these days by charging customers an "ambulatory surgery fee" when he performs a MOHS procedure in his office. Be forewarned that most health plans charge around a $350 copay when things are billed like this, rather than billing it as an office visit. (Health plans either view this as outpatient surgery or an ER visit - both equally punishing to your wallet.) Shame on him. His business was doing just fine before he instituted this new billing practice a few years ago. I went at it with his billing department five times and they refused to do the right thing. In fact, they could care less. I wanted the fee waived, at least this first time, since they never told anyone upfront about this radical billing change. I felt this was a reasonable proposal, but Dr. Hendi refused to step in to get involved and do the right thing. He hid in his office while I went toe-to-toe with his billing department. Can't say enough how grateful I am for Dr. Hendi and all of his staff. They took terrific care of me during and after my Mohs surgery. Dr. Hendi is kind, calming, and most importantly, highly skilled. The entire practice is just very well-run. The office is clean and comfortable, with free wifi and even snacks while you wait. The staff is compassionate and genuinely concerned about your comfort during surgery and after. Because of the location of my Mohs surgery, I required a skin graft in order close the wound and reconstruct the area, which scared the hell out of me. But Dr. Hendi and staff were fantastic - I have healed nicely now and the scarring was minimal. You can barely tell I had the surgery! I'm truly amazed at what Dr. Hendi was able to do. I was probably an annoying patient, as I made multiple follow-up calls after surgery with a million concerns and questions, but the nurses (especially Nicole) and Dr. Hendi himself really took the time to address my concerns over the phone and in post-op visits, despite surely busy schedules. I really can't recommend this office enough if you require Mohs surgery. When I arrived for the appointment that I'd booked online, I was told that the appointment was for three days later. Despite showing an email record of my online appointment, the receptionist insisted that I'd confirmed the three-day-later appointment, which I had not. When I arrived for the appointment Dr. Hendi's office had rescheduled, I was forced to fill out four pages of paperwork providing information that Dr. Hendi's office already had. Despite having had skin cancer surgery in that office in August 2019, I was treated like a stranger. The technician who did my skin exam in June 2019 and again at this recent appointment if fabulous, but it's not worth dealing with the receptionist and the Practice Administrator to get to her. Is true that dr Hendi don't check moles because he is specialist in skin cancer treatments but Joy Green, his physician assistant is great, better than my previous dermatologist, she detect me cell carcinoma, when the other doctor said the mole was a fat mass. I loved it too because they call you with biopsy results the same day or the next. When the other practices used to take 1 week for results. That's why i recommend them 100%. read more

I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on December 14, 2014 by my dermatologists and they recommended I go to Dr. Ali Hendi in Chevy Chase, MD for my Mohs Surgery. When I called to make my appointment, Alexa in scheduling was very patient and kind with me and answered every question I had. It hadn't sunk in that at age 32 I had already developed skin cancer so my mind was racing and I was probably babbling off a million questions and she was so wonderful to work with. I felt at ease with all of Dr. Hendi's staff members because believe me, I called back at least four or five times and asked other questions that popped into my head. I even called a few days before to confirm my appointment and spoke to Wanda who again helped ease all of my anxiety and confirmed my insurance had accepted the surgery. I know skin cancer is fairly common, and I totally deserved it for tanning and living in Hawaii in my youth sans sun screen, but damn, it's scary enough to deal with so I was spazzing out a bit. The day of my surgery, I took the metro to Dr. Hendi's office, as it was located right off of the Friendship Heights metro station. I was told by my dermatologist that I needed to spend upwards to eight hours for the surgery so I brought slippers to change into, comfy pants, books, ipad, food, etc to ease my boredom. When I arrived, all of these items weren't really necessary because his office staff provides all the comforts you need. There are work stations, wifi (strong enough to stream netflex [POW!]), cookies, water, tea, decaf... it's very comfortable. I checked in at 8:30 for my 8:45am appointment. The forms are online so you can prepare them ahead of time. My co-pay with BCBS Federal PPO (Basic) was $335 which was consistent with my explanation of benefits and also my conversations with the insurance reps. Many others checked in, about 3-5, for Mohs surgery. They went ahead of me, which is fine, as in speaking with them later, had much more advanced skin cancer than me and there for much longer. I was seen by Dr. Hendi at about 9:30am, and he was equally as awesome as his other staff. He isn't chatty, but he is compassionate. My tech was Marissa and she took the conversation down a notch, and we chatted about ugly bridesmaid gowns just to break the tension. Dr. Hendi numbed my face (right cheek) and the biopsy/cut out took about 5 minutes, to include the pressure bandage application. I sat back in the waiting room, fired up netflix, and watched a movie. An hour later, Marissa came back to tell me they got all the cancer out in one dig and it was time to sew me up. Your closure scar will need to be much larger than your biopsy/cancer dig out as you cannot close a circle. This was actually the longest part of my day there. Marissa numbed me up, which hurt like hell, but what could you do. I recommend you wear your glasses instead of contacts as my eye got swollen due to the injections. Your face is small so your face doesn't have much room to swell. The closures, including numbing, sewing, and bandage took about 45 minutes. I then waited in the waiting room for my husband as I had concluded my visit there much earlier than anticipated. Dr. Hendi runs a very organized medical office! It is very efficient. The staff was nice while I waited and didn't rush me out. My follow up was a week later for my flat bandage to come out. Again, super nice folks to work with. Dr. Hendi and I cracked jokes about how terrible our eye doctor was. A week after that, I took off my flat bandages and saw my battle scar. It looked awful (that was on 1/28) and today is 2/4 and my scar is healing nicely. Dr. Hendi provides very informative wound care and instructions to include scar tissue prevention. And while I haven't had to go back, I know that if I do have a question, his office will be there to assist me in whatever I need. I will post photos shortly to show my skin cancer scar fading it. Dr. Hendi did a wonderful job, I am certain it will heal with little to no scaring. I had such a great experience here, I cannot recommend this office enough. I believe his office does routine dermatology care, but they only focus on medical dermatology such as Mohs. No botox or fillers here. Dr. Hendi came recommended from my dermatologist to perform MOHS surgery, and I have very mixed feelings. I initially had MOHS done twice, once on my head, and once on my back. The surgery site on my head healed beautifully, the one on my back, not so much. Fast forward a few months and I had to get another cancerous mole removed off my head and on my back. Both of these moles were very close to the original ones that were removed, but this time, Dr. Hendi elected to just do a wide excision. He didn't explain why he choose to do it this way, and I had poor healing from both of these excisions. A little consistency would be nice, and I wish he would spend more time with you explaining everything. However, his nurses are all very nice. The billing department on the other hand is a NIGHTMARE, and will bill your insurance incorrectly every time. read more

I was referred to Dr Hendi for removal of a squamous cell cancer from my leg. That went very smoothly with one incision. I went back to have 2 epidermal inclusion cysts removed from my face. Dr. Hendi explained the complicated incision pattern he was doing to make sure that the residual scars would blend into my facial lines. He removed 2 fairly sizable cysts and the result is perfectly flat (no indentation, which can happen) with a barely visible scar. Dr. Hendi's bedside manner is reassuring. Dermatologists at the hospital where I work recommend him very highly. I will ask him to do any procedures I have to have in future. read more

I had to wait over 40 minutes past my appointment time (having arrived 10 minutes early in case there was paper work) and even then neither the doctor nor any of his assistants or front desk staff bothered to inform me how much longer I was going to have to wait. I had the most wonderful experience at a physicians office. I needed to have Mohs surgery and was referred to Dr. Hendi. Of course, I was a bit worried about it but the minute I entered his office, I felt relaxed. He has the most wonderful staff from the front desk to his nurses. They are kind, patient, are not in a hurry and made me feel that my health was the most important thing to them. Dr. Hendi is truly a skilled physician. He was not hurried, explained what he would do in detail and was so skilled that I did not feel a thing. I've been there a few times, but won't go back. He seems to treat every skin issue the same - hack it off. I had an irritation on my face and he went right to removing it, leaving me with a dark scar on my face. His office told me later hydrocortisone cream would clear it up in the future. I just called their office and they are tried to rush me out of the phone line when I mentioned that I needed a skin check about moles. They mentioned that Dr. Hendi does not do skin checks for moles rather his assistant can do. I am surprised that you can not request a dermatologist to check your moles unless you need a biopsy. Everyone in the office is smiling and happy...a clear indication employees are treated well, as they certainly do treat patients with concern and kindness. I especially want to commend Ashley, who did my prep and responded promptly to follow up questions a couple of days after the surgery. I used to work at a tanning salon when I was 16 and tanned like crazy, and after turning 20 I had become completely paranoid about getting melanoma. I only had a few weeks left on my insurance so I grabbed a last minute appointment after reading the review that was here. Not only was the atmosphere of the office calming and welcoming, but the nurse who helped me (I forgot her name, short hair with glasses) was the sweetest person I've ever encountered at the doctors. Dr. Hendi listened to my concerns, and on my first visit removed 3 moles (completely painless!) and on my next visit removed the rest, including one that had scarred from a traumatizing removal procedure I had when I was 13, which made me feel very self conscious. Dr. Hendi tries to distract you by asking questions during the removal and it works pretty well! I ended up telling him and the nurse all my relationship woes and they gave me great advice haha. Free therapy! I am so happy with the results. Everything healed perfectly and since I followed the instructions, there is no scarring. I highly recommend Dr. Hendi to anyone who has skin concerns. My Arlington dermatologist referred me to Dr. Hendi after discovering a BCC on my face - and I'm deeply grateful that she did. Not only is the procedure state-of-the-art from a "get rid of the cancer" perspective (first priority, obviously) but the procedure also offers the best odds of getting optimal cosmetic results. Every part of the experience at Dr. Hendi's office was first rate - the office staff was incredibly helpful answering questions in advance of the procedure, and when I arrived for my appointment (and followup, post surgery) they were personable, compassionate, and did so much to put me at ease. When in the waiting area for the day of the surgery, they went out of their way with everyone coming in to do the same. They are clearly sensitive to the trepidation anyone feels when they come in for a procedure like this. Dr. Hendi's 'bedside manner' was absolutely first-rate - he comforting, kind, and incredibly reassuring. He and his assistant took the time to answer my questions and I never felt like I was just another one of dozens of people moving through the 'assembly line' that day. Both for the procedure itself and the follow-up post-op, they took great pains to go over the instructions that needed to be followed, both in one-on-one conversation and in a very clear and specific written handout they sent me home with. Throw in the fact that they offer great WiFi in the office so during the inevitable and unavoidable lengthy wait between procedure sessions on the day of the surgery? Had MOHS 2 years back on my nose and the recovery was not good. Get frequent bloody noses, constant itching, and even hairs growing!! Mentioned my dissatisfaction to his office and decided I should not have to pay the balance since I was not satisfied with the service. Now, two years later they send me to a collection's agency!! I was referred to Dr. Hendi by my dermatologist for basel cell carcinoma on the right side of my nose. He and his staff are excellent. Everything was explained in detail so my expectations were well managed and I knew what to expect both during and after my procedure. I did not feel rushed. In fact, I found Dr. Hendi to be very personable. I had both internal and external stitches. I am a 58 year old female with a pale complexion, so was concerned about the cosmetic results. It has been six weeks since my procedure and the results are excellent. Scar is very faint. There is some mild redness but that will fade in time. I would highly recommend. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Hendi and his staff. I had an early stage squamous skin cancer on my scalp and was referred to Dr. Hendi for Mohs surgery. I was somewhat anxious about the surgery, but Dr. Hendi amd his nurses were very professional and friendly and put me completely at ease. In Mohs surgery, the surgeon slices off the cancerous growth and it's biopsied while you wait. If needed, the surgeon slices off more tissue until the site is "clean." Fortunately, my site was clean after the first slice. I had very little pain or discomfort. If you need Mohs surgery, Dr. Hendi is the man. He's great at surgery, a really nice person and you'll be very pleased. read more
