I was disappointed. My initial visit in January 2025 - Dr. Hall was any to see me (at the last minute). Her PA - at the time - stepped in and was fantastic. I decided to make a routine follow up appt and this visit Dr. Hall saw me. I was extremely disappointed - she was approx. 30 minutes late, entered the room and did not introduce herself, treated me like - "why is the lady here wasting my time". I made several attempts to "engage" - nothing for the doc. She is cold, aloof, seems to be uninterested and has absolutely no "bedside manner". I saw Dr. Hall for the first time. She was warm, sweet, genuine, and honestly effervescent. She was very busy but present. She took a biopsy to check for "malignancies." I then read some of these reviews about being overly aggressive with a scalpel and wondered. However, my biopsy came back as a rare squamous cell carcinoma, which means she was right on the money (in my case anyway). read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Shelly Hall today and I honestly thought she was crazy. She was unfocussed, condescending, very concerned that she would be asked about more than one skin issue, and talked over me constantly. The funny thing was that I had made my appointment to discuss moles on my face and she made me keep my mask on during the entire appointment. At one point she held my mask down and quickly lifted up a side to peek in to see what I was talking about and then put the mask back down immediately. This was done without taking the loops off of my ears. She never saw my whole face. She wanted to biopsy something I had had for years and other dermatologists were not concerned about. This skin flaw was not covered up by the mask. She tried to scare me that I had cancer. She couldn't give me a credible reason why she wanted to do this biopsy and eventually stormed out of the exam room. Her assistant was in the room the whole time and told me it was not my fault the appointment had gone south. She even patted my arm to reassure me. When I came home I started reading these Yelp reviews and realized that all of the negative reviews are still very accurate today. The fact they were written from 2010 - 2015 doesn 't matter because she is still doing the same old stunts. I felt ridiculed when she asked me about my skincare routine and then scoffed at what she described as my "fancy creams". One reviewer called her "ditsy" and I think that is an apt description. I've been going to Dr. Hall for minor dermatological concerns for about four years.

I went to Dr. Hall because I read pretty good reviews for her and I wanted to go to a dermatologist that understood ethnic skin, and more specifically, I wanted to go to someone African American. When I got to her office, she was running behind, but I felt as though the extended personal conversation she was having with the patient next door to my room was a part of the culprit. When she finally arrived in my room she was rushing and a bit rude, and I didn't feel like much was accomplished. Additionally, I inquired about a chemical peel and she went on and on about the cost. I mentioned that I was aware of the cost, but I got the feeling that she didn't think I could afford it. Like the other reviewer said, she is very condescending and by the end of the appointment, I was extremely frustrated and was 100% positive that I would not be returning for a follow-up visit. I started being seen by Dr. Hall in 2008 so by now (2013) I have had enough experiences to be a good judge of the practice. Do yourself a favor and find a different practice to attend. While Dr. Hall is an extremely nice person, I'm not 100% sure of her abilities as a doctor. As someone who works and has worked in the medical industry, I'm familiar with insurance, healthcare, and doctors notes. Upon reading her notes that she gave me after we mutually decided we should part ways, I'm glad I'm going to see someone new. Dr. Hall comes off extremely ditzy and does not remember patients, nor does she bother to read the charts or history before examination (which is vitally important when you're supposed to be seeing how moles and freckles have changed or morphed since the last visit to track for skin cancer). I stayed with Dr. Hall longer than I should have because I didn't want to deal with finding a new doctor. But since you're looking for a new doctor now, take my advice and start somewhere else. read more

She's busy , which is a good thing, and if you stress the 'urgency' of your situation the ladies at the front desk will get you an appointment sooner than later. I have been going to Dr. Hall for a number of years now. She and her staff are always courteous. I have never had any problems getting appointments when I have needed them. Dr. Hall always listened to my concerns (what worked and what did not) and adjusted my prescriptions accordingly. Whenever she changed my treatment with a new prescription, she would oftentimes give me sufficient samples before having me waste my money on expensive prescriptions that weren't a good fit. Additionally, I received several chemical peels at this office and my skin really improved. Dr. Hall is one of the few dermatologists that I have actually liked. This is a follow-up review to one I wrote a few years ago regarding eczema treatment. My eczema has been almost nonexistent since following Dr. Hall's advice and treatment plan. My daughter has seen her periodically for acne treatment, and her skin is considerably clearer than it was when she first started visiting Dr. Hall. Last but certainly not least, she has done several body checks on me to ensure that anything suspicious was not found. Last spring, I noticed that a small bump on my nose had seemed to start growing and looking unusual. Dr. Hall biopsied it, and called me in less than a week to inform me it was basal cell cancer and to recommend a colleague experienced in the Mohs technique of removing basal cell. Her colleague did an excellent job and my nose looks almost exactly the same as it did prior to the procedure. My family will continue to rely on Dr. Hall for dermatological treatment. read more

As a vain person, I find joy in the fact that she is always 100% behind my requests for non-medically necessary, but beautifying, treatments (i.e. mole removal, glycolic peels, etc.) Love her and highly recommend her if you live in the area! read more

If you're looking for an aggressive doctor who will biopsy E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, then Dr. Hall is for you. I don't doubt her medical abilities as a doctor, I will say that outright. But she is very rude, condescending, and her treatment of me as a patient made my melanoma in situ diagnosis exponentially more upsetting than it needed to be. I first saw Dr. Hall 2.5 years ago. I was 28 at the time and had not been to a dermatologist in several years. I communicated that I had been anxious about seeing a dermatologist as I have spent time at the pool and beach in the summers like any normal, young adult. Instead of commending me and making me feel at ease, she berated me and made me feel horrible for waiting so long. She took two biopsies: the first came back dysplastic nevus, the second came back melanoma in situ. Regarding the melanoma in situ, her office called me and told me I needed to come into the office immediately to discuss my results. They would not tell me the results over the phone. While melanoma in situ is definitely something to take seriously, they had me thinking I was about to be given a death sentence. When I arrived for my appointment, terrified, Dr. Hall made me feel awful about the fact that I had melanoma in situ. She told me that if I had used better precautions growing up and spent less time at the beach, I wouldn't be in the scenario I was in now. I had mohs surgery on the melanoma in situ. While I am very grateful that she found it, she could not have been less comforting about the diagnosis. Would any doctor tell a lung cancer patient "maybe if they had smoked less, they wouldn't be here"? The situation was bad enough for me, and she made it so much worse. I saw Dr. Hall every three months for another year following my melanoma diagnosis. Each visit, she biopsied something different. 1-2 biopsies every 3 months for a year. Can you imagine the stress? I asked her why she couldn't just do them all at once and she said she was finding new concerns each visit. I also saw her once because I had extremely dry skin over one eyelid. Her first question was "well, what have you been doing to yourself that caused this?" Again, my fault. The thing that upsets me the most was when I left her practice. I switched to the Tamjidi Institute (LOVE it, I have gone three times now and every time has been great). I contacted her receptionist to have the file transferred. Dr. Hall called me personally and demanded to know why I was switching. She definitely caught me off guard and my response was to politely "fudge it" and say that I felt like I needed a change and one of their dermatologists came highly recommended. This was not good enough, and she demanded to know the "real reason" I was leaving. I then told her that I felt judged whenever I saw her and she made me feel very anxious. She then started to argue with me, saying she never judged me and that I shouldn't feel the way I do. I thought it was really inappropriate that she contacted me about leaving the practice and, moreover, digging into the reasons. Bottom line: good option if you want someone aggressive, if you have concerns about skin cancer, and if you aren't bothered by a cold bedside manner. If you are more like me, and are nervous and anxious, go to Dr. Gerson at Tamjidi Skin Institute. I feel like I am in very good hands there, she actually referred me to a melanoma specialist recently out of precaution which I am very glad she did, and she is very warm, welcoming and non-judgmental. read more

I could not disagree more with the other reviewers who gave Dr. Hall 5 stars. I went to see her for my persistent acne after having tried a lot of different medications unsuccessfully over a two-year period. I wanted to go on Accutane as a last resort. She talked to me in such a condescending way, that I felt like a two year old! She didn't want to hear about my experience with all the medications that I'd already tried and kept pushing for more of the same. I told her I'd tried the antibiotics she was recommending, but the answer was "I know what works and you have to follow this regimen. You are a new patient and I want to start you on those medications anyway, before I try anything else". I told her I have dry skin, but she insisted that I have oily skin and told me not to use moisturizer! My skin is so dry that sometimes it becomes flaky! In the end she said she doesn't prescribe low dosage of Accutane and told me to take the antibiotics! Needless to say, I never went back! read more

I was a patient of Dr Hall for a little over a year. She is extremely condescending and even argumentative at times. She also has the strange practice of asking if the patient wants her to biopsy! I am not qualified to determine if a mole needs biopsy; SHE is the doc. Her nurses are unfriendly and incommunicative. The saving grace of this place Is her receptionist, who is lovely and kind. I went to Dr. Hall's office for a skin consult regarding my eczema and for mole removal on my neck and face. Dr. Hall was personable and very friendly. She was extremely professional, and I felt very confident in her knowledge and ability. She took lots of time and care to discuss my skin problems in detail. The mole removal was pretty painless considering I had several removed on my face and neck, which are very sensitive. I went back for follow-ups, and I had no scarring from the mole removal. Overall, I was pleased and will definitely be returning to Dr. Hall's office. I highly recommend her if you're looking for a Dermatologist in the DC area. When I arrived at Dr. Halls office, the lady at the front desk was very nice, welcoming, and helpful. The office was beautiful and well maintained. The music playing was relaxing. The assistant took me to the back room very quickly, with a wait time of about 5 minutes. The assistant asked me some general questions and said that Dr. Hall would see me soon. Dr. Hall came in about 2 minutes and was very sweet. She greeted me, sat down and talked to me about my problem as if she was a friend. She wanted to know what I was doing at home, gave me tips, gave advice, and made me really understand my problem and how to help it. She did not rush the appointment at all. She made sure to answer any and all questions. Other reviewers commented on Dr. Hall saying how much treatments are, and I have to say that I love that! She was upfront and honest and said that so and so will be this much. She did not say it in a way that put me down, but instead, let me know that insurance might not cover this and that. I thought that was great. She gave me coupons, samples, and told me if I have any problems, to call her. I think Dr. Shelly Hall was fantastic and will continue going back to her. I went to Dr. Hall b/c she was recommended by another dermatologist that I couldn't get in to see. I had several issues that I needed to talkk to her about. When the nurse first came in to cover what we we'd be discussing she just had 1 issue down (my alopecia areata). I told her that was my most pressing issue, but when I made my appt I gave the front desk several things I wanted to discuss. She just looked at my crazy and said that Dr. Hall was on a very tight schedule and wouldn't be able to talk to me about each of those things. So, I'd have to come back for another visit. She also mentioned that Dr. Hall took a very thorough approach to treating her alopecia areata patients, so we didn't want to rush it. I wasn't happy to hear that we couldn't discuss all my concerns, but at least I'd have a thorough review of my alopecia areata. Well, when Dr. Hall came in the room I found her bedside manner to be very poor - almost rude. I told her about my issues w/ my alopecia and she kept telling me that mine wasn't that bad - that it could be much worse. I felt like she was minimizing something that I was struggling with. And yes, of course it could always be worse. But, with 5 patches throughout my head...I didn't need to hear that. But, she finished her review (which wasn't any more thorough than I've had before), we quickly discussed another one of my issues and she was out the door! So, not only were her people skills seriously lacking, but I felt like she completely rushed me. I came back a couple of months later for a follow-up. Her bedside manner was a little better. I wish I could give no stars to this Shelly Hall - I wouldn't even call her a dr. So freaking rude - so condescending - rushed through apt. Not at all helpful. What she recommended for my skin did nothing but make it worse and when I was buying more concealer the sales associate told me well duh - the medical wipes and no lotion only sends your skin into shock when you want to keep it balanced. Got better advice from a skincare store then Shelly Hall. Also she gets more money from her patients by not allowing you to discuss more than one issue at a time - requesting that for each item you make a separate appointment - only to wait while she runs behind schedule and then here her bullshit for 5 minutes. On top of it got a HUGE bill in the mail for a test that was not needed and promised it would be covered by my health insurance. Plus her office is terrifying, outdated, and dirty. Technicians are equally unfriendly and rude. Also the medical book she referred to for my condition was from the 80's. Absolute worst medical experience I have ever had! Her receptionist/administrative workers are very friendly and helpful. Dr Hall is not. I agree with the other posters who said she can be condescending. She mocked me for having pale skin and acted like I was dumb for just now considering getting my moles and freckles checked out (I'm 27). It was like she was mocking me for being at a higher risk for cancer. She was very brusque, and when I asked her to take a look at a freckle on my back, she yanked my shirt up before I had a second to do it myself. I told her I was moving away for a year but would be back, and this seemed to annoy her, I guess since I couldn't come in for follow-ups until then. The whole time it seemed like I had done something to offend deeply her on a personal level, and I couldn't figure out what it was. When I left, she actually said, "Have a nice life." The absolute worst dermatologist I have ever visited. She is rude, critical, and extremely aggressive with a scalpel. I first when to her for an acne check/skin check. She told me she didn't do those appointments together and I needed to make a second appointment. First of all, I have been to my share of dermatologists, and that has NEVER been an issue. My theory is she wanted to charge two copayments. When I went to her for a routine skin check, and she removed a mole rather aggressively. I now have an ugly scar. She also told me that because I have a "ridiculous amount" of moles that I was at a very high risk for cancer, and I needed to get them all taken off. I do not have a ridiculous amount of moles, but what is ridiculous was how condescending she was to me. She scared me by insisting that if I didn't visit her again immediately I would very likely get skin cancer. It was crazy. One of her nurses was also coughing and sneezing all over me and seemed to be in a daze. The doctor should have told this nurse to go home instead of having her working with patients and putting them at risk. Overall a horrendous experience, and I would not recommend her. You're better served going down the street to Medstar Georgetown. read more

No long wait to get an appt or to be seen once at the office. Staff, from front desk to Dr Hall's assistants, I found to be courteous and helpful. As for Dr Hall, I liked her. I was having moles removed, and Dr Hall explained the cost not covered by insurance. This for me was good to know. She then made quick work of ridding the sensitive skin on my neck of the moles. I've had a derm mess this up in the past leaving dark spots. Turned out great with Dr Hall. I'd see her for other procedures and have recommended her to friends. read more

I went to Dr. Hall as a new patient for a mole I was concerned about on my back. She froze it, but didn't then just run out of the room (like so many docs do these days). Instead, while she chatted with me, she almost absentmindedly (it seemed to me at the time) glanced at various places on my chest and head. During our conversation, she came back a few times to a mole on my nose. Finally, she said that "just to be safe," she thought she might biopsy that mole, if I didn't mind. Other dermatologists had looked at it in past exams without becoming concerned. I said yes. She quickly numbed the area and removed a large part of the mole. I thought nothing of it. A few days later, I saw on my phone that Dr. Hall was calling me. I assumed it was not good news. It was melanoma. Luckily, it was in situ. I have since had surgery to remove the rest of the mole and reconstruct the area. I could talk about how much I like Dr. Hall's manner, skill, and craftsmanship, but I'll just close by saying that, in my opinion, finding one melanoma sua sponte is greater than or equal to any 1,000 other good qualities.
