Good food, great service. Marais is a surprise in a place lacking for quality restaurants. The only drawback is the noise level. I wish there were a few strategically placed plants to allow for more intimate conversations. John had étouffée which he tells me was great. I had the scallops ( check out the picture) and while the scallops were good the risotto was the star of this dish. I could eat the risotto all day long. read more

We went for a Friday night couples date with our good friends. Right when we walked through the dining room to be sat, I noticed the lack of insulation and any sort of carpeting. In other words, it was LOUD and only got louder as the evening wore on. There are quite a few things that are lacking at Marais. They need to rework the main dining room and add carpeting and booths to create a more upscale atmosphere. Right now, only tables are available, and they have far too many scrunched up together in the left section of the dining room. For the price we are paying, teach your food runners to place the dish directly in front of the guest, as in, don't hand it to another guest to pass along. I also expect long hair to be tied back if you are delivering my food- this is a health code violation if not! Servers also should be sweeping up crumbs during course changes, not simply leaving debris on the table. The two steaks in our group came out overcooked. Kitchen doesn't seem to know what medium rare should look like. Our waiter was attentive and on top of his game and our chosen dishes were good, but nothing special. This has long been one of my favorite places but lately, the value is gone. Prices have gotten absolutely stupid and the food has cheapened and the quality dropped. The bar is particularly egregious - charging whiskey prices that should be for triples and serving drinks that are lucky to measure out at a ounce. If you're going to do that, you owe it to your customers to put prices on the menu. Not doing so is simply low class and frankly, disrespectful. read more

went for dinner with 3 other friend girls who live on the mainland [i live in galveston] parking is valet only...unless, you're very lucky and find a spot. we met at the swinging bar...for those who like to swing!! [dont get that rumor started!!!] speaking of swings...when i went to get on the swing...i had on slacks and totally slipped off the front of it!! the wood is shellacked so unless you have jeans on...it's slippery. thank the lord, the swings have a leather strap to hold you in from the back...so once you plant yourself...you're good to go. We came here a few weekends ago for Sunday brunch. We live in the area and have been thinking about coming by since it opened. I have to admit that the place is beautiful. The outside and inside are so well done and look very sleek and polished. That is a little out of place in this area but not unwelcome. I love how open it is! Since it was their Sunday brunch, it was super packed, which was to be expected. It was pretty loud but again, to be expected, just keep that in mind if you bring anyone older that can't hear well. We all ordered individual meals instead of going with the buffet. I got the 3 Egg Classic and the two people sitting around me got the Crab Cake Benedict and the Bananas Foster Pancakes. They both said their meals were good. For mine, I picked scrambled eggs, a biscuit, and specifically asked for super crispy bacon since I absolutely hate bacon that isn't crunchy. I unfortunately received the exact opposite (super floppy bacon). I let our waitress know and she did take care of it, but everything seemed to be a bother for her. She constantly looked annoyed and didn't smile. She was just not very pleasant overall. My food was good otherwise, and the pancakes were GIANT. I mean, there is no way I could have ever finished that meal in one sitting. So, since I only ate about half of it, I asked for the rest to be boxed up. She agreed, then took my two plates and set them on top of one another...squishing the pancakes underneath. I was understandably confused since she had just agreed to box them up, but because it's busy, I assumed she just didn't hear. I let her know that I'd asked for all of it to be boxed up, which she looked super annoyed about. She finished boxing everything up, then vanished after leaving the check. I assumed she was in the back boxing the rest of my food up, and probably having new pancakes made, but she just comes out with pancakes. I ask about the rest and she seemed confused, so I just dropped it. That was a little annoying, but I didn't feel like waiting for a full meal to be recooked because she wasn't paying attention. Overall, the food was pretty good and we liked the space, but it wasn't anything outstanding and the service wasn't great. We'll probably go elsewhere next time we want brunch, but I wouldn't be opposed to trying dinner sometime. read more

Wanted to dine in the Dickinson area away from the hustle and bustle. Fell in love as soon as I walked in and saw the Wine Lockers and the lighting in this restaurant is simply beautiful. I came to Marais with a party of 5 and sat in the industrial bar section. Donovan was taking our food and drink orders. We stayed there for about two and a half hours - eating delicious food and having drinks. I have to compliment Donovan. He was very attentive and aware. He noticed that I did not eat my olives in my martini, and brought the next one without olives. Great attention to detail! We went on a couples dinner to Marais last night at 7 pm. As others have said, it's valet only, which makes sense especially on a busy Saturday night, which is exactly what this was. There are 2 point of entry here, the long ramp to the right or the stairs on the left ... go for the stairs, it's faster! Use caution when it's wet, as both can be slippery. I was surprised when we entered how crowded this place was! We opted to sit at the bar to the right, but they have a bar in the back on the left and this one was totally full, I am sure because it has the swings (which seem to me to not make sense at a bar where you are consuming alcohol, but whatevs). I ordred a dry Goose martini with bleu cheese olives. It was good but seemed to be a little heavy on the vermouth because it was a little off. Hubby ordered some martini with pineapple juice and it was ok, too. Both drinks ensured a nice little buzz upon completion! When our table was ready, which took about an hour (after being told 30 minutes), we ordered the sliders, ceviche and shrimp cocktail as appetizers. The guys really liked the sliders, they had some blueberry spread that they said was good. The ceviche was super delicious and the shrimp cocktail is a winner since you can't mess that up! For the main course I had salmon, which had a nice sauce on it and came with Brussel sprouts. The Brussel sprouts had a smoky flavor to them, and that makes sense since they had some ham included. The dish was overall enjoyable! Hubby had a steak and potato and did comment that the steak was good but not quite as good as he has had at Perry's. The meal was enjoyable and we would probably come back to partake of the bar area and eat just appetizers and have drinks. It's a nice addition in Dickinson and it's apparent that this is the place to go and be seen at in the area, which didn't bother me so much but was unnerving to my husband to have people staring at you as you drive up, walk in, and sit down. Our experience at Marsis was a mixed bag. My wife and I came in for a parents night out. We stared with drinks at the main bar with Bobby who was great. Great interaction and the drinks were very good. From there our experience went down hill. Once we were seated we ordered the oyster Trio as well as an $80 bottle of wine. Our wine showed up fine and then came the oysters out shortly. As soon as they sat our appetizer down they showed up with our entree's before we even took a bite of our appetizer . We sent the entree's back since we had not even started to enjoy our oyster appetizer. About 2 minutes later someone else showed up with our entree's again. We sent it back a second time. Once we finished our appetizer our food arrived again. Same food they had attempted to serve us two times before. My wife's green beans were cold. My steak was cool and the bernaise literally had skin on top of it. It was clear they served us the same food a Third time. We sent my wife's plate back and my grits and they came back within 5 minutes. Clearly my grits were warmed up in a microwave as the one bite I took from them was Cleary evident! We eventually got the manager and they did offer to remake our entree's . At this point our evening was no longer special. We chose to move on. We did order desert which was very good. They did comp our entree's (which was not our goal). Came here on a Saturday night with my husband. First thing I experienced was when I got out of my car at the valet (your only option), was confusion as to where the front door was. I had to ask. There are winding stairs and they don't obviously lead to the front. The valet guy pointed out I could take the ramp or go to the left where the front door is. When we walked in, the hostess asked us right away how many were in our party. There were 2. She took us inside and brought us to a table that was sandwiched in-between 2 other tables. Uh...How are we supposed to get in? So I asked her to put us somewhere else and she did. Side note: There are 3 different "spots" to dine. Starting as you walk in is fine dining, then there is a bar area, which we were told does burgers and such, then down stairs a "garage" type bar area with sandwiches, beer, cigars. Being our first time, I am not sure how you distinguish where you'd like to be. I suppose you're supposed to figure it out on your own because no one asked us. We asked for one type of wine and that was sold out. Then we asked for another type and the waiter came back saying that was sold out. Then we decided to go with a cocktail (for me) and a beer. I asked the waiter about making a custom drink because nothing looked appealing on the menu. He wasn't sure if the bartender could do what I asked so he left to talk with him. A few minutes later, the bartender came over with a drink that he thought I'd like based on what our waiter told him. It was pretty good, so I kept it. He even decided to name it after me - the Kristini. =) We got fresh bread that was pretty seasoned. As a "French" style place, I would have preferred a french baguette or something similar. I ordered a dozen raw oysters and gumbo and my husband got some tuna, noodle, stir fry dish. My oysters were very good. Great in size and they had great dipping options (I had to ask for crackers). The gumbo was good too. For a bowl, I wish there was a little more seafood to soup ratio. I wasn't a fan of what my husband got. He enjoyed it. I thought it would have been great without the tuna. It had crawfish in it. That would have been just fine. The tuna gave it a different taste. ...like too many things going on. For dessert we ordered coffee, brought out in a French press, which was really good and a creme brulee. Apparently the toppings change from time to time. We got the cherry topping. I'm a huge creme brulee fan and it had more of a flan texture than a creamy creme brulee texture. The taste was really good though. After dinner we walked through all of the different areas. It was pretty dark when we went outside so couldn't see the water. There is a tree that has hanging swings and we sat there for a bit enjoying the nice weather. We'll be back. The dress was all over the place. There were people really dressed up to people wearing shorts and flip flops - and that was in the fine dining area. What a FABulous experience! I took my husband here for his birthday dinner, and we were both just blown away by the energetic vibe of the dining room, the absolute epitome of casual elegance. We were lucky enough to sit at one of Rocky's tables. He's the head waiter, and he truly loves his work. Rocky made us feel like a couple of his best buds right from the start. Just a real charmer. Rocky led us through the menu like it was his favorite novel, and every recommendation was spot on. I had the crab cakes and fried green tomatoes appetizer. Just yum! My husband ordered oysters. He gave a rave review. For the main course we had the shrimp and grits and shrimp ettoufee. Both were simply delicious. I'd recommend this restaurant for sure. It is a nice place with several nice seating areas and an outside bar. We where hoping this place wasn't another overpriced place to go eat and have some drinks was sadly let down. The parking and entrance situation is difficult to figure out. We ate in the formal dining room. My husband felt underdressed but since it's on the water and you can dock your boat, shorts, tennis shoes and t-shirts are welcomed. My husband had a cup of gumbo to start which was as big as a bowl, the steak Delmonico with a side of garlic mashed potatoes. His steak was perfection. I ordered shrimp cocktail to start with fried shrimp 3-ways and fries as my entree. I was disappointed in the cocktail shrimp; $15 for 6 shrimp that weren't completely cleaned properly. My 3-way fried shrimp were coated in cornmeal, some in coconut and then some in pecans. All of them were fairly tasteless and over cooked. The fries were good though and I don't normally eat fries. The food was good, server was a little pushy and over-bearing and dinner was way over-priced for the area. Doubt we'll be back but I'm glad we tried it. read more

Had been wanting to try this place out for a while after seeing posts online from friends who have dined here. Came around 2pm on a Sunday, before 2 only brunch served. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and upscale, but not stuffy. There is a casual bar area along the main dining. No wait and restaurant was quiet and relaxing. Our waitress, Bree was friendly and knowledgeable and answered any questions we had in regards to the menu and drinks. Started off with the baked oyster trio as an appetizer, which was a few of each of the different flavors. They were delicious and it was hard to pick which one was my favorite - because they were all so good! For the meal portion, had the Marais Filet with Diane Sauce with sauteed broccollini and the Crawfish etouffee. Both meals were delicious, the filet on the pricier side but expected when going to fine dining. Interesting drink menu - was curious to try an Absinthe cocktail. Ordered a pear one and another with champagne. I can cross it off my list of experiences, but will never order another Absinthe cocktail because it tasted horrible! Our waitress did forewarn us however, that the Absinthe had a black licorice flavor and she was not kidding..we still finished them and had a good laugh. We had a date night dinner here. Walked in around 6pm on a Friday night without a reservation and got a table immediately. The atmosphere is beautiful and our service was great from the hostess to the wait staff. I had the gumbo and it was yummy! Also, the side of greens is delicious. It's a bit salty but the bacon bits will do that...it's delicious, just get them!! My husband had the shrimp and Gouda cheese grits. The kitchen nailed it. Of course the price point is higher than other places in Dickinson but treat yourself because this place is worth it. The only "complaint" we had was the valet parking which was not optional. An exceptionally beautiful restaurant. Drove up to a free valet. It was Easter brunch time which was about a 30 minute wait so we decided to sit at the beautiful Bar. The bartenders were very engaging prompt and knowledgeable. We had a few bites that included grilled oysters that were delicious and Okra Rellenos light Crispy on the outside, inside cheesy but still light and delicious on the inside served with a Thai Chile dipping sauce omg that was the highlight of my Easter! We tried several cocktails including a Bellini and their Moët Rose. Our friends joined us for a few cocktails and we had a wonderful experience. Can't wait to come back and try some of the other menu items I had my eye on. This place has 3 bars in one huge restaurant. The bar we sat in was exquisite and beautiful, a side bar was enclosed and had swings instead of bar stools. There is a bar downstairs that is more casual from what we were told. However beautiful and upscale this place looks it's a casual laid back atmosphere. They have outdoor seating as well overlooking the bayou. What a great new place! read more

We had visitors from out of state so decided to take them to Marais since we have been there on numerous occasions. We arrived at around 2:30 pm and decided to eat outside by the lower bar area. The waitress gave us the menus and took our drink orders. One of our guests ask questions regarding celiac friendly items. She didn't know so went to ask the chef. When she finally came basically there was no specific celiac friendly options, we stated giving her the order. While taking the order she noticed it was 3:04 PM and told us it was past the lunch menu time which ended at 3:oo pm. The manager came she explained once more, and we told her we had sat at 2:30 pm and if we had been told regarding the time we would have placed the order quicker. The manager came and basically said could not accommodate us because the lunch items not available (really, you throw them away?). The n she said she would compliment some drink (not the ones we had but if we ordered more. We said thank but we are going somewhere else. So we went to Olgas at Baybrook mall. Its a matter of principle but restaurants need to understand that they can be somewhat accommodating, specially in these times. There are plenty of restaurants that seem to appreciate customers. read more

We had 4 for dinner on a Saturday night early at 5:30. Asked for a quiet table and got tucked in near the bar, but bar height seats and table were very comfortable for a long and happy dinner. Bri was our service person and she is wonderful and knows her menu offerings. Ran the gamut on choices from Cajun to steak. Started with large decomposed delicious Caesar salads with light touch of anchovie paste in the dressing and crispy whole romaine leaves with shaved parmesan. Steak was perfectly cooked and generous portions with tasty demi glaze on the side. Creamy and luscious asparagus chicken creamy poblano soup. Friends added baked potato to the I steak and said it was well prepared and delicious with oiled salted skin and oven baked. Crab cake on small crispy fried green tomatoes was all crab and delicious. Ended meal with a tasty creamy luscious strawberry shortcake. Great service is not snobby in this lovely white tablecloth restaurant on the bayou in Dickinson.
