If it's cold/windy it can be less enjoyable outside, although they do provide blankets if it's cold. This is one of the most amazing restaurants I have ever been! We came here for a drink at lunch time and the view was amazing! I got a piña colada and my friends got a glass of rosé. We loved it so much that we made a reservation for dinner for a group of 5 at 8:30. The service was amazing, specifically from Dinis (pardon my spelling) who was quick with our requests and really really nice. It was a bit brisk outside and he provided us with blankets which was really cool. I ate the sea bass fillet which was some of the most amazing seafood I have ever consumed. My friends enjoyed their food as well as we all cleaned our plates! If I ever return to Lagos, I will definitely be returning to Mar. read more

This negative review is about horrible service and plating so strange you wonder if it was intentional. It is simply a warning to know before you go, because we were clearly the exception rather than the rule. All the other diners were receiving attentive service. Reviews on Google were mixed, negatives seemed to be about service, more than food. Ever since covid we have learned to be more patient, usually because of short staff in kitchen and servers. Mar had none of these excuses. Yelp was more negative, but i didnt check that until we were already seated, to see food pictures etc. Tripadvisor was almost all positive. Here is the story... We had been traveling throughout southern Spain for over a week and had become accustomed to two practices, patience with your wait staff (ok to make eye contact & head nod to indicate ready, and it isnt rude to ask for the check), and tips are not asked & not expected, no spot in the bill to add charge, when we left coins the waiter would seem confused. It was our first night in Portugal, and even though our rental condo had great views of the ocean & coast line, we wanted to go out and dine with a view. Dressed for a romantic dinner, we walked to Mar, and went to the host station to request a table. Another white, non american, very casually dressed, couple arrive. The host pointed to a table in the middle of the balcony marked reserved for us. I preferred the edge table, and foolishly thought he put us at the center table because we were dressed up, and actually considered it good because we wouldnt be 'forgotten' as we were literally in the middle of the balcony and on the edge of the aisle used by walkers and waiters, not way out on the edge of the balcony and furthest away (the table the other couple was seated at). Soon enough, I began to think we were being punked on one of thise hidden camera reality tv shows. The host / boss waiter who sat us, brings menus and removes the reservation plaque. We decide our drinks and entres, wonder about specials, and wait. We see other couples get their drinks, entres, checks, deserts. Waiters, the host, all pass by repeatedly. I stack our menues and slide them to the edge of the table. Try to make eye contact, everyone has side plates, silverware and complimentary water, interesting i think. As i notice glasses of water and house water decanters. Did they know how to speak portuguese? Did they know a magic phrase that unlocked the wonders of normal service, I'd settle for normal. We intentionally are not on our phones, engaged and looking around. I turn the menues perpendicular and slide them 1/3 off the table. The 'other couple' on the outer edge get appetizers delivered. The couple next to us, finish their entres. The host comes over, clears their plates. Goes to the newly seated table and brings them an electronic tablet menu, props on the table. Oblivious to us. I get up to take a picture, try to make eye contact so i can smile & nod. NADA. I sit down. The older couple get their apps. I feel if i say something, it will just make it worse. If we try to go somewhere else we would it would be even longer, because after 20 min, they will have to notice us, right? I mean the host looks at tables to seat new people every few minutes, servers are delivering drinks and food all around our clear table with a stack of menus. I decide to walk around & take pictures... be obvious. Feeling certain someone must have been by our table while i was gone more than 5 min. As i walk back i see the menus still on edge, no waters, plates, or silverware... Still. I see a waiter walk by, look at me as I approach. Almost involuntarily i do the universal gesture for whats up with that... As i extend my arms, shrug my shoulders and point to the table. He stops in his tracks. Looks at the table, looks at me, beelines it to the host. I walk back to the table and see them in an animated converation. The host comes over, and offers no apology... He says, 'ready to order'. We offer none of our usual rapport.to the point we orders. Fingers crossed, wait. Food comes in a timely manner.. We thought they were going to deliver it still with no silverware on the table...they did manage to get that delivered just before the food. Tasted great, , but very odd to plate the fish skin side up, with sauce on top of the skin. It wasnt whole fish. Host brings blankets to us & other guests, only nice thing done. We finish up, host bring check and then ask how much tip we would like to add???? Remember, first night in Portugal. My husband I look at each other, 'guess they tip here'... This was one of the most expensive meals we've had so far in Portugal, but sitting outside on the cliff was the most spectacular view that we've had, which to us was very important to us, and very exhilarating! This being said, we still found the price of the meal very reasonable compared to US prices. Our meals were cooked perfectly, the wine, of course, was wonderful, and we were offered lap blankets when the sun started to set and, the temperatures dropped so, it was the perfect romantic end to our day. read more

We came here for an early lunch after just arriving to our hotel. It was recommended by our receptionist. Food: They got a regular menu then a menu that they write on chalkboard. Food: (5 stars) 2 tuna salads: (5 stars) a healthy and tasty option. Great balance of flavours. Baby squid: (5 stars) it is an appetizer so the portion is a bit smaller. The taste is outstanding, very strong flavour due to wine and garlic mix. Sea bass: (5 stars) if two people are ordering a sea bass and a starter or a side salad would be enough for a full meal. Chicken salad: (4 stars) the chicken was a bit bland, but otherwise pretty good. We also ordered 4 beers and one large bottle of water. My friends and I had 5 alcoholic beverages, bottled water, one juice, bread, olive oil (these both cost extra but less than a Euro each), Fish pate(reminded me of tuna salad with spreadable which has a relish flavor), stuff mushrooms (4 small caps per order), shrimp and rice in garlic sauce (5/6 pieces of shrimp), and tuna tartar. I did not rate the restaurant on service as I would with US restaurants as I think most countries provide a different dining experience relative to the US. In general, my experience in the US is usually quick service and frequent check-ins by the waiter. I would say the waiter was not as attentive but most likely as the staffing was probably less than usual, but the staff were very friendly. I give it 3.5 due to cost. The view was unbelievable over top big cliffs. I tried the salmon which was good, nothing too special. My friend got the lamb which was excellent. Our waiter was a little rude and impatient with us. Actually the worst meal we had in Portugal. Service: The man who was serving us was cold and rude. In our 14 days traveling here, we never once experienced service this bad. It took over an hour to get our main dishes. Food: We got "dumplings" to start that were ice cold. Perhaps it was just a bad translation on the menu (although I read it in multiple languages) but these were actually croquettes and had zero flavor. The goat cheese puff pastry was pretty solid and I wouldn't mind getting this again. The problem came with our meals. My partner ordered a steak medium rare and it came out blue. Like, they pretty much barely seared the outside. As the steak came with a sauce it was impossible to have them just regrill it a bit. I got the sea bass and it was... edible? Dry, with a sauce that was just ok. The veggies that come with the meals are basic and underwhelming to say the least. The meal was so disappointing that we literally left all of our main dishes on the table, paid the bill and left. read more

Located in Fortaleza da Ponta de Bandeira, cliffside with a beautiful overview of Lagos is MAR. We stumbled upon it walking from our AirBNB heading to city center. Based on the fact that it was fairly busy and people seemed to be smiling (or drunk, drunk smiling). We asked to sit on the terrace for the views. Only downside is that through most of Europe, smoking is a thing. Something we needed to get used to. Our next door tablemate though was a very friendly Italian from Calabria and also friends with the owner, offering suggestions on our meal choices, and when I was trying to decide whether or not I wanted a Sangria, she asked her server to pour me a glass of her pitcher. How kind!! Jason opted (or rather I Told him to) order the "green wine" which is something that you can only have in Portugal. The sangria was refreshing, but glad I did not order it. Not enough untzzz in my opinion. I actually liked the green wine. Ordered: The fish pâte. Comes with two rolls. Tasty enough, but after a few bites it sort of reminds me of creamy tuna salad with a relish inside. Risotto of the day with fresh seafood with a tomato base. The risotto was a bit on the heavy side and not very flavorful, but the fish inside was superb. Glad it came with a slice of lime. I limed the hell out of it. Haha. 4 mussels, small mussels. Tasty but would have liked more. The 2 shrimp came whole, and I enjoyed them. There was other shrimp (small little guys inside the risotto, along with some clams, I think? Fish of the day: Came plentiful in size, but needed acid. The veggies were 2 pieces of broccoli, some biased slice carrots, and a few green beans. Whole baby potatoes. Served like my mom would put food on a plate. Dessert to go: Almond pie and chocolate cake. Got home, and well, it satisfied my sweet tooth, barely. Certainly made fresh, like 3 or 4 days ago. The people who work here are utterly disrespectful. I ordered a drink that I did not like, and they refused to take it back. Alright, I get it. I'm American and maybe they don't reimburse for items that someone didn't like here. Maybe it was a cultural thing. However, the waiter got extremely loud and aggressive with me when I politely asked to send it back for something else. He told me "No. You ordered it. You pay for it" and then continued to berate me in front of my entire party. There was then a spill on the table. A different waiter came along and I offered to take the rag and wipe the spill. When I did, and handed it back to him, he said "Oh this is how you manage things?" and stalked away. He then came back with another rag and made a show of wiping it. I genuinely was trying to help and not make someone else clean up my mess. If he wanted to do it, he could have politely declined my request. There was just so much uncalled for rude and nasty attitude. And the drinks were terrible. My whole party agreed. There's another bar down the road--go there. read more

Beautiful view and my 19 year old son said the Portuguese steak was the best meal he'd had so far in Portugal. We went for lunch after checking in to our apartment, per the recommendation of our Airbnb host. I had a salad and the caprese sandwich that was delicious. The food was good, but the service was bad. I can't remember the last time we've had service this bad. There are two entrances to the restaurant and they're both in the back, there isn't a host station or greeter. Everyone ignored our presence until we asked if we seat ourselves, at which point we were told no. Drinks took forever. Silverware came out after the food, two different times. The first time they literally only brought knives for the bread so when the main dishes came out we had to wait again for them to get us the rest of the silverware. No one checked on us, we had to constantly wave people down. The guy that took our order was gruff, bordering on rude, and then he never came back to the table again. When we wanted to leave we had to go to the utensil station and wait until one of the servers acknowledged us. It took a few employees going by before the one relatively friendly guy helped us. Our table ordered the Salmon with potatoes and vegetables, salmon pasta, swordfish with capers and shrimp, and chicken risotto. Everything was AMAZING. There was also a great drink menu and we enjoyed our pitcher of lovely sangria. After the delicious meal there was no way we could pass up dessert and we were not disappointed. My favorite meal in Lagos. I came here for dinner on a Sunday night around 7pm. We were seated immediately. The menu is extensive but manageable. The views are incredible and I still cannot believe there isnt a line around the block to get a table here. We ordered the grilled salmon and grilled swordfish (all locally sourced fish) with a fig, apple, goat cheese appetizer. Everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. While this place has great views - it is situated on a cliff overlooking the beach, harbor, and open sea - the food is only average. The tuna sandwich is in line with something I can make myself, while the corn pizza is a little better. A great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery, but not to have good food. read more
