They didnt plug my poodles ears and add water inside his ears so he developed and ear infection and when i called so they can fix it the vet said it wasnt her problem because I didn't mention the ears when i did because i know if i dont take care of the ears he can develop and infection l. I've boarded 4 cats and 2 dogs at Mar Mel over multiple years. Hours later today, I'm still very sad over the fact that they told me I couldn't board my 2+ year old dog with them because of the first day I left her with them close to a year ago. It was her first time being boarded, and she had separation anxiety, which I would think a reputable boarding facility would have experience with. Apparently she damaged the indoor kennel she was in, and so they moved her outside. I never saw the damage, and they never asked for any compensation, so I have no idea what that meant (visually). From there, for the remaining 3-4 days she was with them, I was told daily that she was doing much better/fine. A little shy/stand-offish around other dogs, but fine, and they recommended I socialize her. I've spent the entire year taking her to the local dog park 4-5 days a week to socialize her. She gets along great with other dogs, has never one time been involved in a fight, and I'm constantly being told what a sweet dog she is. Today, I called to set up a weekend for her to stay at Mar Mel again. I mentioned that she has had a lot more time to adjust, gets along great with other dogs. The owner told me he needed to talk to the other owner and would call me back. He called back a few hours later and told me they weren't going to take her. No questions, no trial run, nothing, just a no. I'm so disappointed. I found this dog running around in the street about to get hit by cars with no discipline and owners who didn't care about her a little over a year ago, and her 1st time being boarded was only a few months after that. If it was so bad, why did they tell me every other day but the first that she was doing fine? Why didn't they try to charge me for damage if it was substantial enough that they're going to turn my dog away close to a year later? I would have been willing to pay for damages had they mentioned it or shown me photos or anything. I guess because of the pandemic when they were struggling for cash, they were not being upfront about things? They mentioned a few times in one of my phone calls with the owner (a year ago) "the next time she's here,..." - but yeah, guess there's not going to be a next time. I don't know, I'm just really disappointed in a place I've given many hundreds of dollars to because I thought my pets were safe and cared for by experienced handlers there. I wish I could remove the 5-star review I left them before, but apparently I can't. read more

Stumbled on Mar Mel Inn after our regular pet hotel was booked out for the 2 weekends we needed to board Finch and Titus. They had a successful daycare visit and my dogs absolutely dragged me back to the front door the next time I dropped them off. Every time I've come to pick up one of the workers has something sweet and personal to share about my dogs which leads me to believe they really do get loved on during their stay :) They haven't really spent much time away from us recently due to pandemic times, but these few visits have been a nice way to ease back into travel without worrying. Lots of available public parked adjacent to the park and a drop off spot in front. Highly recommend. read more

I found Mar Mell Inn via the internet as my husband and I went on a 9 day vacation and needed to board our dogs. We were nervous as we had never left our pets for more than a day or so at a kennel and didn't know what to expect. Note - I did not personally see the location, my husband did the pick up and drop off. He said the place was very cute and the staff did a great job taking care of our two dogs. I requested inside kennels and we paid to have them use our food. We also got the dogs bathed before picking them up. I will for sure use Mar Mel again in the future. read more

We've been lucky enough to always have pals willing to take care of Charlie when we're out of town. But, things have changed with the addition of the wild pup named Penny. I don't think anyone would enjoy cleaning up whatever crazy messes Penny made while we were out. So, this time we decided to put the dogs up in a doggie hotel. Here's the thing though - doggy hotels are goddamn expensive. Good news though - Mar Mel Inn is not so expensive. Charlie and Penny got to share a bunk for $40/day. Not too shabby. The staff there was super friendly, and I felt quite comfortable entrusting them to take care of the pups for the weekend. Unfortunately this isn't exactly the Four Seasons of pup hotels. No lush gardens or relaxing jacuzzis here. Nope. Just a dirt lot and the kennels. But still, for the price, it was well worth it, and they even put up with me be annoying and calling to make sure all was well with Penny and Charlie. ...good news - all was good, and Penny was causing trouble. An update since my last review in 2014. I am still boarding my dogs here because of the great service and trust I have in the staff. I like that the staff is the same and know all my dogs well. Rosa has been handling my very fearful dog Paris since 2014. Paris is so fearful but knows Rosa well and is always so happy to see her! Lucy, my super high energy dog gets extra time in the play yard to get her energy out. My Aussie is a nipper/herder needing special handling, but Rosa and Kel know how to handle him. We were attending a convention in Long Beach and needed to find a place for our Boston Terrier while we were away. I looked to my fellow Yelpers for assistance and we found Mar Mel Inn. We dropped her off with no problem and my wife was given a guided tour. I am relating this second hand, but she would have told me anything on it. She said they were very nice and offered to put her with a Frenchie to keep her company. Also they feed her thier food, but we have her on Blue Buffalo and when you change a dog's food they tend to have issues so they charge an extra $2 for feeding her special food. When we picked her up they talked about what a great dog she is, we already knew that. Outside of smelling like she had been in a kennel she was great and so I would recommend and use them again. read more

I loved this place. It is very affordable, specially if you have more than one dog. I left my two silky terriers and my westie with them for four days. It was really cheap since they allow up to three dogs in the same kennel ($50.00 per day for the three of them). The only catch is they have dirt for the playgroung. So, if you don't pay for the extra bath, your pups will be dirty as heck when you pick them up. The fee includes the play time, food, and "housing". My pups were supper happy when I picked them up. However, they were dirty. Just keep in mind you are getting what you pay for. I loved my experience with them and I would highly recommend them to anyone who doesn't mind bathing their pups after they pick them up. read more

I have a two year old shih tzu and I just relocated back to Long Beach about 6 months ago. Since then, I have tried 4 dog groomers. I had a pretty sweet groomer in Sacramento who had been grooming dogs for years ad years and charged a fairly cheap price for quality work. They would always charge me $40 for full grooming - bath, nails, hair cut and de-matting no matter how matted my dog was and he would always come home looking fabulous! I keep my Shih Tzu's hair long, very long, so when he does to the groomers, its not so much that he needs a hair cut, his knots just need to be brushed out. So when I moved back down here I didn't think it would be hard to find a groomer who knows how to groom a shih tzu. Well, I was wrong. The last three times were disasters. Basically, they didn't listen to anything that I told them about how I wanted my dog's hair cut and they were inexperienced and young groomers. One tried to give my dog a puppy cut and chopped off my dog's black tips on his ears - he used to be tri-colored, now he is only beige and white. I was horrified. The same groomer shaved off his eye lashes and if anyone owns a shih tzu, you know they have very long eye lashes. I also kept his hair around his nose long so it drapes down the side of his mouth like a mustache, well, she cut that off too - even after I told her not to touch his face. Time for another grooming so I went back to yelp, I came across Mar Mel last night, checked out their website, and thought I'd give this place a try because it really reminded me of the place I used to take my dog to in Sacramento. One, because Barbara has been grooming dogs for 20 years so she must know a thing or two, and two, because the price was right. I got my shih tzu groomed for $46 and that included the de-matting. I've been to some really nice dog grooming places in Long Beach with great service but they were just too overpriced. Last time I shelled out $80 - not worth it when my dog doesn't require a major hair cut. I am satisfied and will return! They take CASH or CHECK only. read more

Pima, Jessica and Maria are the best !! Our dog Sophie was a rescue who was used a "bait" dog for fighting pit bulls when she was a puppy. As a result she is VERY skittish around other dogs. It was clear that she should be as isolated as possible. Pima made it a point to make sure she was comfortable there with two "trial" stays - one for a half a day and one overnight (both at no charge !) before we left for a four day trip. After being certain that Sophie was acclimated to her new surroundings, we left with the peace of mind that she was in the best care possible. Upon our return, it was clear that the ladies at Mar Mel at done a wonderful job of caring for our pet. Thank you again !! read more

Had to make a quick trip to Hawaii for a wedding and i worry about leaving my cats with anyone but everything worked out great leaving them at Mar Mel Inn. They provide food but i brought my own just in case. They let the cats out of the kennel if thy want for supervised play time. I called to checkin and they said everything is great. i was away for about a week and everything went really well. Everyone there is very nice. I would recommend this place as I will be going back soon for some travel plans i have this year. They earned my trust. I feel safe leaving my prized possessions with them. Wanted to add The property is very clean. The kennel area for the cats is spacious. My cats are a bonded pair and both looked fine in 1 kennel. Daisy....Psshhhh! ....I NEED to socialize. I'm honored to be invited to a special kinda affair and Daisy can't go! But she can't stay by herself all day either. It is time to get her used to being kenneled whilst I revamp my social calendar. Damn it, I'm started to bark right along with her!! I searched the Net and found the Mar Mel Inn. Damn it if it isn't five minutes from the crib/den. I called and the owner invited me to come and check it out. I rounded up Mz. Dais' and we rolled. Dais' was excited by all the barking when we got out of the car. Once inside, she saw all the dogs and it was another story. She was a bit apprehensive at first, but then sat and lurched with renewed excitement. Cool. Mar Mel offers full service grooming and boarding and are open 7 days a week. Shot records from the dog or cat' vet is required. I think I'm in love. What? I can drop her off, have her groomed, fed and exercised while I fuck off the whole day? Sweeeeeet! 22.00 Per day for day care-- Drop off between 8 and 10 AM and pick up between 4 and 5:30PM. 25.00-- Additional for grooming services while you are away. My bitch is learning to bark at strangers, sit for my friends and her daily training is coming along well....but I needs to get away from her sometimes and take advantage of her ease with separation. When she is able to chill at someone's crib, then she can go with me. In the meantime, this is her new home away from home. Daisy jumped and lurched and the owner suggested a choke collar for her as she is starting to drag me around. He showed me a huge ass German Shepherd named Heidi. She is about 7 years old was chillin like ice. Gorgeous, quiet, calm. I hope Daisy learns a thing or two from Heidi. I hope that she doesn't pick up any bad habits, like thinking that incessant barking at the kennel is cool at home. And to run quickly from the boy dogs trying to hump her. read more

My dogs were not fans of this place and neither was I. I have a Malty-poo, male, 15 pounds and Lab Mix, Female, 32 pounds. The dogs are boarded in an outdoor facility. Warning: This is not an indoor kennel. And the kennels are similar to that of a shelter. If you go, you will notice that the staff wears ear plugs because of the loud barking. The dogs get only about 2 hours of playtime which is quite disappointing. I usually leave my dogs with Petsmart Day Care where they are playing for a solid 8 hours. On another note, my dog apparently rolled in some poo while she was there (I'm not really surprised, she does that sometimes). What bothered me is that the lady running the place decided she was going to bathe the dog and charge me without even telling me ahead of time. She had my number, she could have called. Final Review: they are good for grooming. In the summer, when it's warm at night, probably not that bad for overnight, but terrible in the winter when it can reach below 50. read more

My wife & I have been using Mel Mar to kennel our dog during our many road trips for about two years now. Our dog is a champion, and my wife is very particular about where she kennels. Our dog has been to several different kennels and tends to get very nervous. The staff instantly recognizes her by name and she recognizes them and runs to them! Great service, staff & prices, but that's not all. We have been able to park on the curb, right in front of the entrance every time we have visited, The kennel always seems busy but there is never a wait. The location is not as bad as others have written, more industrial than hood. The kennels are always clean, and we pay a little more to get her groomed right before we pick her up. A few months ago she needed shots, so I called the kennel for info/advice. Very useful and accurate info was provided. This place would be a Consumer Reports "Best Buy"! read more

I took my small dog to this Bed and Breakfast for Dogs when my husband and I went on a cruise in February. I wanted to spend as few away from my li'l one as possible, so my husband and I made arrangements with them -- last minute, too! They were very accommodating and asked me to fax all the paperwork in beforehand, so that when we got there we wouldn't be late for boarding the cruise ship. I found a lot of comfort in knowing that while I was cruising, my dog was in great hands! She was there for 4 days, 3 nights. She was clean, groomed and very happy when we picked her up. I highly recommend Mar Mel Inn! So convenient for when you're cruising out of Long Beach, just a short drive, and really, you can be confident that your dog will be in very good hands. We got stuck in traffic coming home from Santa Barbara, and with a quick phone call, John and the awesome staff at Mel Mar Inn were able to keep my dog an extra night without hassle or issue. We are so thrilled to have found Mel Mar Inn for our three fur babies! We toured the facilities before making the reservation and the staff was so friendly and helpful from the get go. They have really fair prices, especially with us having 3 we needed to make sure the kennels would be large enough to fit all of them together which was not a problem for them at all. Drop off was a breeze and they ask you questions about personality traits and things they should be aware of and they were really good about dealing with all of their "quarks". One of our boys even had a very dry nose which was cracked. They informed us that they use a salve for it and when we picked them up his nose looked so much better! They took excellent care of our babies and we will be booking with them again for our upcoming summer trip. Thank you guys so much for caring for our pups as if they were your own! read more

I echo the sentiments of everyone else - this is a great kennel. Barbara and the rest of the staff are so friendly and honestly do seem to enjoy dogs. When I made the appointment, she gave me a tour of the facilities, which has never happened to me anywhere else. When I picked my dogs up, they were white and fluffy and looking happy. I can't say I love putting my dogs in a kennel, but when I have to, this is a great place to take them. I know they'll be loved and well-taken care of. Just picked up Olive from her first kennel stay. I was nervous about boarding her because she is not the sweetest dog and other kennels said no since she tends to nip if she's scared. The attendant told me that it took a couple days for her to get comfortable but after that she was very pleasant. She came out of the kennel wagging her tail, energetic and happy, letting the attendants pet and play with her! Even on her walk tonight she seemed more friendly and confident around strangers. The Mar Mel's rates are excellent and the entire staff is very friendly. I would highly recommend this place to anyone with a difficult pup or one that needs socialization. The common area that the dogs play in is a dirt mound, so make sure you include a bath with your dog's stay. read more

I've been spending most weekends out of town, and they've been very accomodating. So, why only four stars? Well, the 'hood is pretty sketch. I originally chose this facility to board my dog at because I called and spoke with a woman named Rosa and was impressed with her professionalism. I had several questions about the facility itself, and she happily answered all of them, making me feel comfortable enough to leave my dog there for a night. I dropped her off a few days later and everything went smoothly. The 2 staff members that I dealt with were great and very friendly. **Note: I requested that she be placed in an outdoor kennel in a specific area because there seemed to be more shade over there. Pick up times in the evening are between 4-530pm, which I was very aware of the entire time. At 505pm, I received a phone call from Barbara and she asked if I was still coming to pick up Stella. I replied with a "yes" and her response was, "Ok, well we close right at 530pm." I thought that was a bit rude and unnecessary that she was calling me when I still had 25 minutes to pick up my dog, but I brushed it off. I arrived at 520pm to pick up my dog and Barbara was there to take care of me. While I was being checked out, I asked her which kennel my dog was boarded in (I wanted to make sure she was placed in the general area that I requested). After looking at me like I have 5 heads, Barbara's exact response was, "What difference does it make?" I replied by telling her that I requested a specific kennel, and I asked her the question again. Instead of telling me where my dog was placed, she said (in a condescending tone), "Well, what kennel did you ask for?" Again, very rude and unnecessary behavior, especially with the condescending tone she had with me the entire time. This experience started out positive and ended up turning into a negative one, all because of one person. Barbara desperately needs to work on the way she speaks to and treats people, seeing as she works in customer service. Needless to say, I will not ever be returning to this facility. UPDATE: Instead of the owner himself contacting me to discuss what happened (which I requested), Barbara called me the very next day to refund a portion of my bill. With that refund came a couple of very rude comments about how she was going give me a refund "even though I didn't understand their pricing policy." Her passive aggressive behavior is going to run that business straight into the ground. read more

With my wife I went this place and from this place I have found the cat friendly housekeeper and at first I called them as the short notice but they response as soon as possible. I have boarded my dogs in many different places because there is always something I don't like (not to mention how outrageous the cost is here in SoCal). Mar Mel Inn is, really, a superb option for boarding for my two dogs. No, it isn't fancy and your puppies will need a bath after you return home but my guys seemed super happy after 2 weeks here. I'm going out of the country for 8 days and needed a place that is affordable, clean, will accept my dogs, and take good care of them. I called a few places and checked on the prices and what services they provided. Mar Mel Inn appeared to be a good fit. I came by and spoke with Kellan and John with my dogs prior to dropping them off. I got a great vibe from Kellan and John, they were VERY friendly, polite, understanding, and good listeners to my dogs needs/problems. I'm sure they have dealt with all types of dog needs/problems before as they had great solutions to make my pets stay enjoyable. Kellan and John werer what really sold me on taking my pets to this place. Upon dropping off my dogs and my interaction with Barbara she seemed like a nice and sweet lady. She seemed a bit overwhelmed with answering the phones, getting me in the books, and having another dog behind me on the grooming table. She asked me a question about my pets vaccination history on my vet records as to where she could locate what she was looking for. As I began to explain to her what she was looking for, she Shushed (ssshhhhh) me repeatedly like a child! Seriously?!?! I'm not a prissy or soft person but I felt disrespected that I brought my business to you and that is how you treat me? That is not proper business etiquette. I let it go as I know that time is money when running a business and she could very well be very busy as far as i know. As she continued to jot down my pets information I was expecting her at some point to ask me about any special needs, concerns, or vital information they may need but she did not ask me ANY of that. As I began to attempt to give her emergency contact information (since I will be out of the country and difficult to reach) she just started to talk over me as if I was not saying anything of importance, saying "They'll be fine and we'll take care of them here." I left it at that. I'll let them figure out what I tried to tell them. I have faith in Kellan and John to be of sound mind and remember what I told them about my pets. If it had not been for my flight leaving the next day and the other places needing at least a 2 day prior notice before boarding my pets I would have taken my business elsewhere. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 1 is because of Kellan, John, and the facility. It only takes 1 person to tarnish a solid reputation of a business. I WILL write another review once I pick up my pets. Hopefully it will be a better encounter the next time and I can add on the other two stars. read more

I love this doggie spa. It's great for when you travel and have to leave your baby behind, but also they do a wonderful job grooming. The only fallback are that the hours for pick up and drop off are limited, but because their services are so great, I'll deal with the inconvenience. I've had my dog and my foster dog stay here a couple of times and all the times I've been there, the staff have been GREAT!!! My dogs get to have plenty of playtime and attention from the staff.
