Not the same office since Dr Storace sold the practice In 2018. New owners care more about money than their patients. Sad.

This is my dentist. I called about a year after I moved here, and it had been an embarrassingly…read morelong time since I'd been to the dentist. I brush and floss religiously, but as a poor grad student, I had neglected the regular cleaning part. Gross, huh? Once I made an appointment, though, I felt SO much better. Sonia sat me down for an initial free consultation, asking me about my oral hygiene habits (yes, I brush and floss; no, I don't smoke) and my appointment preferences (they offer sedation dentistry if needed, which I don't, but it's a good option to have!). She was so nice, and once I set up my initial appointment, my favorable impression of Modern Dental only got better. Modern Dental matches its patients to a hygenist, whom a patient sees each appointment. My hygenist is Kathy, and she is great! She is gentle, but she also doesn't BS, telling me when I'm not brushing long enough. Dr. Houghton is the dentist, and he is also very professional and does a great job. My favorite part of a dentist visit is the goody bag they give patients at the end. Goody bags at the dentist? Oh yes! Each time I go, they give me a tube of toothpaste--seriously the best toothpaste ever, made from all-natural ingredients and a wonderful cleaner. So it tastes like ass--who cares? It really works much better than anything available at the drugstore. They also provide plenty of floss, tongue scrapers, and other fun stuff. The office has also given me, gratis, trial-size toothpaste tubes for my travels. The prices are pretty reasonable--I would gladly pay twice as much for the oral care I receive at Modern Dental. I now don't hesitate to go to the dentist every 6 months.

I don't recommend getting oral surgery here. I liked Dr Lyford and trusted him. I had a root…read morecanal go wrong at another practice, which resulted in eventually needing the tooth extracted and having an implant put in. Instead of getting an upper dental implant done at MGH (where I really should have gone) I got it done with his office. Ahead of the surgery, I spend months jumping through hoops and seeing a sinus specialist (that Lyford referred me to) at Mass Eye and Ear to have Dr Lyford "approve" me for tooth removal and subsequent implant. There was concern that the root canal had damaged my sinus, and I was told it hadn't done permanent damage but I'd be better off having the tooth removed immediately as the existing tooth and root canal were irritating the sinus. Dr Lyford finally cleared me for dental surgery in his Hollis office with another Dr that comes in to help him. Things seemed fine immediately following the surgery, but months later I had recurring pain in my mouth and sinus then my eye on that side of my face kept swelling shut. I was missing work events and in a lot of pain. I had to go back to Mass Eye and Ear ER several times as the doctors around here were worried about nerve damage and potentially losing sight in the affected eye. During this process and several rounds of imaging later, it was discovered that the new implant had punctured my sinus and was causing serious problems. I had a very rough summer dealing with it. I eventually had to have sinus surgery to mitigate the problem. The sinus specialist that Dr Lyford referred me to himself said that my needing surgery was due to the dental implant. I'm hopeful that I can keep the implant but it may eventually need to be removed if it continues to be an agent of infection. I saw Dr Lyford today to follow up and discuss the implant and he claimed that the sinus specialist had no idea what she was talking about (the woman HE referred me to at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston) and that the implant wasn't the problem. That I would have a swollen eye, nosebleeds and pain (which I reiterated I did). He was very dismissive and wanted to adjust the implant which I said no to. Clearly, I need to find a new dentist. I just don't recommend this practice and wish I had done things differently on my end. Also, the services are really expensive. I've spent thousands of dollars there. He is out of network for dental insurance and you pay out of pocket to be reimbursed (in theory - it's a partial reimbursement at best).

Clearly, I needed to find another dental clinic to continue work on my nasty pie-hole (I'm kidding, guys. My mouth's not that gross). Anyways, I happen by this place via Yelp search, naturally. And let me say...they did not disappoint. This clinic is a smaller one, which I like. Of the two times I've been here so far, it really hasn't been all that packed. While there may be some adjustments needed for their booking procedures (Seriously, I had to get rescheduled 4 times before locking in a solid time. What even IS that?!), they are very quick to check you in once you're locked in for a time. The office is very clean and COVID compliant. For the time being, you still need a mask to enter the building. The reception desk has its plastic shields in place, hand sanitizer, and so forth. But now...the real question that's probably on your mind. How gentle or rough are the dental hygienists? Take this with a grain of salt, as I am a patient whom requires more frequent cleanings as opposed to someone who does NOT have periodontal issues. The cleaning was (much to my surprise) completely painless. Yeah! It probably has to do with the fact that this was just periodontal maintenance rather than a deep cleaning, which I assumed was going to be the case. What that consists of is basically just them taking off the hard stuff more frequently than usual. A "normal" patient only needs a cleaning about every 6 months or so. I go twice as often. So, considering how painless this was, I don't think I'll mind the new schedule as much as I otherwise assumed. Pricing is fair enough. But as I tell everyone, check with the office to verify if they accept your insurance policy first. They're easy to find, located just off of the turnpike. Oh, forgot to mention...I met the head dentist of which this place is rightfully named after. The guy seems pretty chill and very knowledgeable in his craft, but definitely not in a pompous sort of way. That's always a plus for me; when dentists and their hygienists are non-judgmental towards their patients. With all that said, I think we got a keeper here, fellas!
