I respect her professionalism and the eloquence of her note, and therefore am submitting an edit to Yelp. My purpose in leaving the review(s) I wrote about the antiques shops/"malls" in this area was to save others the drive, the gas, the time, and the disappointment of this misrepresented area. My husband and I go antique-ing every weekend as we are avid collectors. I was an antiques dealer for many years in Grand Rapids, and find it misleading and disheartening when an area advertises itself as an antiques destination only to make a trip to the area and find mostly garage sale junk and one owner who told me the malls have to carry that because they can't survive selling true antiques (I would assert this isn't the case, and can provide a litany of true antiques malls in West Michigan). That being said, I have to applaud any antiques business owner in this area who strives to be a purist and supply true antiques to the area.

I found a wonderful, antique framed photograph I bought at a great price. The owner was there when we were, he was very nice, chatted with us for a while. The women at the counter weren't particularly warm, but one had just gotten blasted by an obnoxious older guy because he complained that the store charges an extra 6% to customers who pay with a credit or debit card, to cover the fees associated with that. She told him to take it up with the bank and he got really mad and loud about that. So, in fairness, I can understand why when we got to the counter she was a little distant. We'll go back, we prefer high-end true antiques more than newer and flea market type items, but it seemed there were good things at good prices with a bit of searching. There are many rooms to explore and the merchandise runs from big furniture pieces to small chotskies. My nephew bought his 70's kitchen table and chairs here for $75.00. Of course their are a few vendors that have high prices, but if you visit often you will be sure to find some sort of hidden treasure or another. It's not too far from MSU right on Grand River.

One of the antiques is the fellow who works here who is certainly not someone you want to depend on if you're in a hurry. He is a sweet old man who always has the time for an impromptu chat about this or that and he has a vague idea where you might find that or this in this store. It's very cramped and difficult to walk through, let alone find anything specific in, but it's so very interesting. Inventory keeps piling in, quite literally, and I don't think I've ever used, literally, so appropriately. I found some openly racist anthropology ("South American Redskins") from the early 20th century, and some truly vintage racist (and racial) legal text from a little bit earlier ("People of color property issues" and yes, that's the origin of the allegedly open minded euphemism, segregation law), sheet music from the Roaring Twenties, Shakespeare annotated meticulously two generations ago by a theater professor, a photography coffee table book from Post-War (World War II) Japan - the era when my father met my mother in rebuilt Hiroshima. There's a fascinating cramped filing cabinet full of antique postcards and while I was there a Korean War veteran and his middle aged adult daughter found a WWII era post card that had been sent to a relative (penny stamp affixed) from Europe. If you're the sort of person who thinks that rummaging through a museum warehouse or a restricted archive would be fascinating or an antique book collector (either a collector of old books, or an old collector of books) this is a must-see one hour destination.
