I love Manus. My dentist is not here, but my orthodontist. Dr. Bob is awesome and so is his staff. They are extremely gentle and the nicest folks ever. They did a consultation, 2 weeks later, I went back (and it was 2 weeks because I was out of town for work) and got my molding (or whatever it's called) and the following week, they put my braces on. It was a breeze! They are a hop, skip and jump away from my house, so I can leave at 7:15 to make a 7:20 appt. I love this place. Note: It smells really good most of the time because Subway is next door baking bread. :D read more

This place... man. Let me start by saying that the reason for this bad review isn't because of the doctors or the facility. IT'S THEIR BILLING and total lack of management. I work for the major university in Hyde Park and I have their dental insurance. I think that we can safely assume that the majority of folks who use this office have the exact same insurance as my family, however Manus insists on pretending they have no idea how much to charge and will consistently overcharge you at least 30-40% every time you go there. Even for a initial visit or a cleaning, pretty standard stuff, Manus overcharged for, sometimes 200% more than they should have! When you're checking out they act as though it's a standard way of business to just take as much of your hard earned cash as possible - then refund it if things end up getting covered.. huh? Who runs a business this way? What adds insult to injury is not only do they take way more money than they are supposed to they keep it for as long as humanly possible. I just don't understand how they can get away with this. That said, the Doctors and non management staff are wonderful. I am still debating if I should go back for my next cleaning or find another dentist. read more

Unprofessional billing practices. Reem Obaisi, DDS offers less than satisfactory service, in my humble opinion. Profit over well-being of patient prioritized. Still in pain from fillings, exposed root. read more

First time to visit this oral surgeon Dr John Chae. I'm impressed by his efficiency and professionalism. Special thanks to Andreal who stood by me and assured me that everything will be okay. When it came to check out time and my medical savings card was not going through, Tiara patiently helped me to activate the card and payment went through. They set up follow up appointment for my wife and children and everything went so smoothly. I will confidently recommend this team of professionals with excellent customer service to anyone. read more

As others have described, this felt like a low level scam. Background- I have excellent insurance and have never needed and major dental work done. I scheduled an annual checkup and basic cleaning. The guy who did the xrays was great. The checkup was so fast that I almost missed it happening. Then they send you to the front desk where some woman rambles as quickly as she can to basically tell me that they will not give me a basic cleaning, but rather a deep cleaning on two sections with some other random crap for a total of $1200 out of pocket. I laughed. They hadn't even spoken to me about my check-up or xrays yet. She asks me to sign this ridiculous list of fees that she was calling my "treatment plan" with her word that I wouldn't be held liable. I said, no because I don't accept this treatment plan. At which point she and the other woman behind the desk got really salty and short with me. I guess the scam wasn't working as they planned. I asked for some record of feedback on my 10 second exam, and a very nice woman (Dr?-- I don't know I hadn't met her) came out and gave me a brochure about levels of dental cleanings.... Ok... but my exam? She kindly went back and gave me a low quality printout of my xrays-- no explanation about how to interpret them-- and a printout from that 10 second exam that the Dr couldn't be bothered to discuss. This is how they treat patients when the scam fails. I asked the front desk woman if they needed anything from me at this point and she snaps-- No, do you need anything? lol... In the end, it was just annoying to waste my time. I just scheduled an appointment for a friggin; cleaning elsewhere. read more

So a week or so after I went to manus to tell them what they had done they said they would help me so it wouldn't be as irritating they ended up having to SHAVE my tooth down so it wasn't as sharp which although annoying because they caused the issue in the first place I accepted as it was a small area and they did it for free and were nice and apologetic about it. Now almost two months later I received a BILL in the mail!?! I was shocked as it is from the initial first visit that I made sure to and had to pay in full before I left that day $257 and now they are saying totally different amounts and saying I owe $303 and only paid $49 I have receipts you guys took my money assured me everything was good and now this!!? I'm a student so thought I would try to find a nearby dentist since it's hard to fly home. WORST MISTAKE of my life they are SCAMMING patients clearly as I'm left with hundreds of lost money that they took but did not register, a fake bill for already paid services, a chipped and then shaved down tooth all errors on they're part all for a simple cleaning ! I will try and go into the office to fix this error hopefully it's just a mistake but at this point I would've been better off seeking legal action read more

This dental office is TERRIBLE. Office staff are very rude, the dentist always over-recommends treatments. In addition, they consistently give you lower estimates for services and then tell you your insurance charged you more than expected and force you to pay more afterwards. I was looking for a dentist in hyde park and didn't do much research, and I paid for it dearly. They financially exploit students who don't know the area and are learning to navigate dental insurance for the first time on their own. I will never go back and recommend that new customers avoid this dental office. read more

New Patient who hasn't been to the dentist in two years and boy I was scared. But they accepted my insurance as well as I noticed how busy they were one time getting thai food from across the street. Had an appointment for x-rays and a consultation that turn into one part of deep cleaning (that I was scared as ever to get because I heard how bad it can hurt) x-rays went fine as well as my consultation and here come the deep cleaning. Julie did my deep cleaning and she reassure me I would not feel anything. I told her of past experience and she took care of me to the point I wanted to hug her. very professional and organized and clean. read more

So how is it that I received no reminders for my appointments and I just happen to call about my appointment that they forgot to re-schedule after I called it in? The new system they are using is going to cause your customers to rate this practice poorly just on customer service alone. Why is it 2017 and customer service is getting worse and worse. Avoid this place at all cost. I came here to have my caps filled in and the dentist did them wrong, which resulted in me being in a sh*t load of pain for weeks after the procedure so I had to go back. She fixed the issue and told me that it would be free of charge, but I ended up with a $100.00 + balance because of a supposedly X-ray charge that they were refusing to adjust off. Not to mention, when I was there the last time I told them that I didn't think it was right for me to pay for a x-ray fee when I wouldn't have had to come back and go through the process, had she done it right the first time... The manger came out and said my insurance was going to cover it (I guess she lied so I can leave) just for them to start sending me text messages about me owing the money anyway and started threatening to put my bill in collections... this place is money hungry and a joke... How are you guys going to charge me because of y'all mistake ??? I actually liked this place and was going to spends thousands of dollars coming here, it's sad that they loss a good customer because of greed and stupidity. I'll take my funds elsewhere. PLEASE DISREGARD THE HORRIBLE REVIEWS. That's what stopped me from coming to this office initially but after going to a reputable dental office that wasted my time for 3 hours, I was literally in tears when I arrived. The front desk staff was very empathetic and accommodating. Gave me the service I needed with no hesitation or judgement. Let's just say when I left I was in tears of joy. I saw Dr. Nairi for my services and she was just a wonderful soul. I'll be back for all my dental needs! read more

Stay away from this Dental office; they are a huge ripoff! They're only interested in selling you services whether you need the services or not! I went to this office back in September 2012. I made clear that I only want a routine cleaning. When I got there Kelli Christensen, D.D.S. said that since I was a first time patience I had to have full ex-rays...I told them as long as its all covered by my insurance. They assured me it was! Then the high pressure "you should have an $800 deep cleaning" sales job started, Led by Dr. Christensen and her Hygienist... I did not get the deep cleaning but I did get a residual bill for $172 even after I insisted that they make sure all services are covered 100% by my insurance. DON'T GO. I was very patient with the desk staff (in my opinion) because they seemed to be trying their best. Though I did experience some of the bait and switch tactics other reviewers mention, I was naive enough to believe that this is a normal way of conducting a dental office. I was also told I needed the deep cleaning. I obliged. I was then told that I had many, many cavities. I believed it. Twice I came in and was told the dentist had had a "family emergency" and could not come in. Then it came time for the dentist to start the work. On two separate visits, I shrieked in pain. In all honesty, this is not the worst thing that could happen, on it's face. However, the dentist and hygienist proceeded to gaslight me about the pain and subsequent anxiety I was experiencing. My temporary filling had come out and the nerve was obviously exposed, I was in serious pain when the tooth was exposed to air or touched. I was told that they cannot do anything for anxiety and that the pain would be over if I just let them finish up quick. (After some arguing they numbed the area). I paid upfront for some of the services I received during the first visits and was told I would get a refund when the insurance kicked in. I ended up with a credit, which was great, but I definitely still paid more than they claimed I would. Finally, after the 2nd painful visit and lack of empathy, I paid, left, and promised myself that I would not return. I am only writing this because I recently, and very randomly, received a large bill from Manus Dental in the mail. The bill was not itemized and has no indication of what they are charging me for. I was told my balance was paid in full, and I was supposed to have been refunded a large sum. I will be calling to try to sort this out. Wish me luck. read more

OK folks. Here's the scoop. I have bad teeth. I always have. Tons of fillings, root canals, crowns...it stinks. I've been through a ton of dentists in Chicago and finally found Dr. Rudolph about four years ago. Here's what you need to know: 1. Go see her. 2. She's awesome. 3. She is very good at what she does and won't try and push you into anything you don't want/need/can't afford. 4. It is easy to make appointments. 5. Dr. Rudolph is the nicest dentist ever. The only downside with Manus Dental (at least in HP) is that they are not open on Saturdays. If you want Saturday appointments, this is not your place. However, if you want a dentist that rocks, this IS your place. Go now! You will not be disappointed. read more

The practices of this business are borderline fraudulent. After a check-up, they said that I needed many fillings, a "deep cleaning", a full crown on one tooth, and a prescription night guard. The total for all of these services in excess of $4000. I got a second opinion from Smith & Smith Smile Studio. Their diagnosis was that I needed two fillings and a wisdom tooth pulled for a total of less than $300. The only conclusion that I can draw from this contrast is that Manus Dental is only interested in lining their pockets with unnecessary dental procedures to cure "problems" that ethical dental practices cannot identify. I strongly recommend that you find someone else for your dental care -- Smith & Smith is an excellent option. read more

My treatment plan has been thoroughly explained and executed throughout the past 3 years that I've been a patient. The office staff is very helpful and the location is clean. Manus dental offices need to be shut down. The one on Michigan Avenue finally closed after years, probably decades, of scamming patients. While I have been happy with the dentists I have dealt with, the office staff is problematic. This is not the first time that a schedule has been messed up. Manus Dental had a visit for my son who was about to leave for college; they recommended he have his wisdom teeth removed; however, there was not time before he left for college so they recommended another doctor. I tried but that dentist was only available to get him in the day before his flight. We decided that wasn't best. I called Manus back and indicated that I would like to schedule the appointment with them for his return on winter break. They first said that he would have to have a consultation. When I pointed out that they had just taken x-rays and recommended the wisdom teeth extraction, they agreed that we could schedule the extraction. We made the appointment; he showed up with my ex-wife today and they told her that the appointment was not scheduled. They said they had tried to contact me, but that I had not responded. Not true. They would not take him in. I called to find out what happened. They told me that they had scheduled a consultation and I had misunderstood. When I told them what happened, the rude woman I talked to said that she was "sorry" that I was not clear on what was to happen. This is not the first time that Manus Dental's schedulers have made a mistake, but it is the first time that I have been hit with the rudeness that I would not expect from staff. It's a shame that the dentists are being harmed by the behavior of those who are supposed to support their work. read more

I do not recommend going to this place. Every time I went in they would make me feel like I was doing something wrong and would tell me I had to get a lot of unnecessary fillings done. The last time I went in they said I'd have to get two crown procedures along with other fillings, and when they started doing my crown they suddenly stopped and said I'd need to get a root canal. As they put a temp crown on one tooth, pieces of my tooth would fly into my mouth as I was crying (I'm only 23 years old, and having to get a root canal procedure especially on one of my front teeth is very unusual). I left and went to another dentist for a second opinion and finally found a better office that actually cares about their patients wellbeing and want to preserve teeth. There are a lot of dentists out there who know they can get money out of people, and unfortunately this seems to be one of those places. More relieved than sad to be leaving this place. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Hylan-Cohen, the orthodontist at Manus Dental and was very satisfied with the level of care I received. Dr. Cohen oversaw my Invisalign treatment until I (unfortunately!) moved out of state. She did an excellent job explaining the treatment plan and monitoring my progress - even my new orthodontist was thrilled with how my teeth had progressed under her care! She is extremely personable as are all of her assistants. I'd highly recommend her to anyone seeking orthodontic treatment in Chicago. I had the same experience as some of the other folks here. I went here requesting a cleaning and the first visit was tied up taking X Rays and having a look in my mouth. I left without having my teeth cleaned. Surprise! They also suggested deep cleaning, that cost me $300 on top of what my insurance covered. I hesitated, but eventually got it done. I came in wanting whatever my insurance would cover and it does seem like they try to upsell. I may try them again, but if they do anything other than clean my teeth like I ask them to, I'm gone. read more

I was strongly recommended expensive deep cleaning. I could not refuse it so I have to change the dentist...

I have been a patient at Manus Dental for many years. I stuck with them despite changes in management and dentists twice that I remember. It is not the place I began with for sure... Today, I called to re-schedule a regular cleaning coming up in 11 days. First I was told that the time was reserved "just for me". No kidding! And then I was asked if there was any way I could make it. Um, no! That's why I'm calling. I was starting to get annoyed now, but was not at all prepared for the next question. "Can you give us a reason for not being able to make it?" Hell no! I'm calling Thursday 4/25 to change an appointment for Monday May 6th. I asked why they wanted to know this and was told the doctor likes to know. It is none of the doctor's business, but I have a job that requires travel and I will be away. Now how does that change my dental care? I'm actually afraid to find out. Time to find a new place. As I pointed out, this behavior is going to drive all of the responsible patients away. Seriously. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Rudolph's for two years. She was very nice, and out of the varied dentists I've been to, I really liked her and her practice. Her hygenists did leave a little to be desired, as they always rushed through the cleaning and polishing. In any case, last year I didn't have dental insurance because I missed the registration deadline, so I went to another place in Wicker Park from a Groupon. In any case, they discovered a huge (!) cavity, of almost root canal proportions. Six months earlier I had seen Dr. Rudolph who had told me my teeth were perfect. Now I'm someone who has always gone to the dentist 1-2 times a year, brush 2-3x daily, and floss every other day (could do better on the flossing I know). I've had one cavity in my life, when I was 8. Both the Groupon dentist and a relative out-of-state (who is is dentist and took care of my teeth before too) told me there is no way a cavity that big developed that quickly, that my previous dentist must have missed someone on exam or x-rays. read more

I've been to this office 3 times, and each visit was worse than the last. Today marks the worst experience I've ever had getting dental work done, and I've had a lot of dental work done. Bottom line: horrible patient care. Each time I have been here, the hygienists and Dr. Obaisi have seemed incredibly, and increasingly rushed. When I got mouth x-rays here a few weeks ago, the tech was working at a jogging pace. Today, when I went in to have a few cavities filled, the dentist saw me immediately, gave me Novocaine, and said she would come back in 10 minutes to let me get numb. She came back in 5 minutes to ask me if I was numb, and I replied that the whole lower half of my face was numb, and that that had never happened to me on any of the 6-8 previous experiences I'd had with Novocaine. (She said it was normal, but I have my doubts.) Then, without a word, giving no explanation of what she was going to do, no talking me through anything, she just jumped in my mouth with a drill. And surprise, I wasn't quite numb yet! Then, instead of coming back in 5 minutes, she just started drilling on another tooth! I felt enough pain while she was drilling another one of my teeth, that she had to give me more Novocaine about 20 minutes later. Even after a third dose of Novocaine, I continued to feel pain, but was so ready to leave this office and never come back, that I sat through the pain. At that point, I had lost confidence in the ability of Dr. Obaisi to get me numb. I will never come back to this office, and recommend that you don't either. read more

The very sad thing about a lot of the negative reviews is that many of them have been proven false. The person that reported Dr. Christensen saw another dentist, was told that the work was fine and then proceeded to threaten the doctor via email. She was also informed by specialists that nothing was wrong. All this after the state board then investigated and found no wrongdoing. Take negative Yelp reviews with a grain of salt, especially when they are provided under pseudonyms. read more

Dental care is okay, but the business is dodgy. I was a patient of Dr. Rudolph for several years, but the last time I stepped foot into Manus Hyde Park was summer 2012. I received a check in the mail the other day with no information--no letter, no notation, nada to explain what it was. I phoned to find out what was going on. The receptionist was clueless at first. She finally told me that it was likely a refund for overpayment (my insurance covered more than the estimate). She wasn't 100% sure--I could hear her typing over the phone to look it up, but apparently there wasn't any additional information...? I asked why I am just now, 20+ months later, receiving the check. She told me that it was because Dr. Rudolph left the practice and they're now closing out the books. It is absolutely inexcusable that the only way I found out about an overpayment was because a dentist left the group. My contact information has not changed since I last saw Manus and yet they never reached out. This raises serious questions as to their accounting practices, competence, and ethics. If you decide to use Manus, keep an eye on your accounts and coverage, apparently they don't! read more

The care of the hygienists and doctors is wonderful. The problem is with billing, which is a disaster. I have been going to Manus for 5 years. This week I had to have a post removed because a crown had failed (work performed by another dentist). The other dentist failed to own up to his work, and refused to removed to post and do a bone graft. I should have persisted and forced their hand to redo their crappy work. Manus advised me to have the work done by them. The problem is that while the dentist and hygienist are in network, the surgeon isn't, and no one explained this to us. Now we are on the hook for a hefty sum. This makes no sense. They clearly are out to make a buck, even with loyal clients. Their business practices are shady. I'm not sure I want to return to them. This is really disappointing. read more

I'm impressed after my first visit. Dr. Rudolph actually seems to respect my ability to think--she takes the time to listen to my questions and doesn't just give stock answers. She patiently and thoroughly answered all my (somewhat silly) questions about dental health and my teeth. And she has a good bedside manner in general, making me feel very welcome to ask her anything or mention anything I thought was important as it came up. The hygienist I saw was also great (sadly I can't remember her name to give her credit); she did a great job cleaning my teeth and taught me some new things about dental hygiene that I'm surprised I got this far not knowing. I'm not that great a judge, since I don't have a medical degree or anything, but everyone there, Dr. Rudolph, assistants, hygienists, all really seemed seemed to know their stuff. The office itself is great--clean, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are all quite competent and courteous. And their computer system was great. Maybe this is standard practice here in Chicago, I don't know, but they had these small TV-sized displays mounted on the wall in front of the patient's chair where I could look at my x-rays right after they were (digitally) taken and any other photos we took of my teeth. And of course Dr. Rudolph used the technology well, pointing to different parts of the picture and explaining that my bones were at normal height so I didn't yet have permanent damage from my negligent oral hygiene, etc. I did have to wait a while for an appointment (about 2 months) and they had to reschedule me once because of something on their end, but they made sure I had plenty of warning and was rescheduled well. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Dr. Sarah Rudolph was the best, but she left the practice 2 years ago to teach. The current dentists are unethical--whether to pay off their student loans or the expansion of this storefront practice, I don't know, but they shouldn't pick your pocket to do so. S. Rageb's aggressive probing of my gums caused intense pain. She then claimed that I needed an almost $200 cleaning that wasn't covered by insurance. She was both defensive and arrogant when I questioned her judgment. I went to a respected dentist who did the same exam, without pain, and recommended a regular cleaning. I have reported Rageb to the licensing & dental societies. read more

Dentist was unable to choose color of my crown. They been shifting me back and forth 4 times, and on the end I ended up going to the Lab where they adjusted the color...even then it was not great but I really couldn't afford more time to waste on that process. Office manager told me, after I complained about my time wasted, and incompetence of their dentist (also arrogance but that's another story) "Our doctors continued to work with you and scheduled multiple appointments with you (at no additional fee)" Implying I guess that I should be happy that you didn't charge me for the incompetence of their doctor. That otherwise they could send me home with completely wrong color but it was their good will that enabled me to waste some more of my time.... read more

I highly recommend Dr. Sara Rudolph, DDS, at Manus Dental on 55th in Hyde Park. She truly is the "coolest dentist ever". Honestly, I actually enjoy going to see her! She has always been caring and compassionate and always has a smile and words of encouragement. I had missed regular dental care for a number of years. She did not even ask or comment about when the last time was that I had a dental exam. She just focused on my current condition and addressed some gum issues I had. Now I'm getting regular cleanings, flossing daily and have happy, healthy gums and teeth. It has truly been an enjoyable experience! I also recommend her to someone who had dental issues that hadn't been taken care of and he really likes her and her approach too. read more

They get two stars because they are in Hyde Park and close to me and because they generally answer the phone and are sometimes friendly. I've had some bad experiences here with techs but over all it's mediocre in service and friendliness. I would never get any real work done here again, as I had to have another dentist at a different practice fix bad crown work I paid a lot for here. So instead of 1,300 or so it cost me double that. But that dentist is gone now. Although, it's still the same ownership... I think some of their office staff is pretty bland and a couple ladies are usually ok. I wish I could remember the nice lady's name. I only do cleanings here sometimes, which of course have so been pretty mediocre. When I call for a cleaning, the office staff has a tone as if they are doing me a favor in getting me an appointment to spend money with them. I get nicer treatment at pretty much any other healthcare office I choose to make appointments with. I keep going here because it's close. That's the only reason. read more
