Chiquito - This is what a pitcher of margaritas looks like when you request it with "no ice" - shambolic!

Someone from management needs to visit other places where Mexican food is done (even slightly) well. The waitress and manager were very busy and overly inattentive even though there were only 5 tables in the entire restaurant. This establishment is pretending to be a restaurant, and doing it badly.

The place looks the part, and has a nice our door seating area! The bad: Sadly, the food. Every Mexican/Latino place I have been to has served chips and salsa. They gave me stale popcorn. The menu items were not Mexican/Latino for the most part. Fajitas and one or two other things were the extent of the main courses. I ordered the fajitas, which I thought would be excellent. Sadly, this let me down even more. The meat was over cooked (I asked for medium rare and it showed up with barely any pink), and it was sliced with the grain of the meat, making it tough. To make matters worse, there was no seasoning. Traditionally you would find a mix of cumin, salt, garlic, etc. but this had none of that. It was served in a bed of onions. I had around 5 pieces of red pepper to 50 pieces of onion. It was also served with the smaller portion of guacamole and sour cream I've ever seen. I did have a piece of their orange cake with chocolate, and that was very tasty!

Hard to find these days for a place to do that especially in the UK. The manager was super nice and helpful. I have to say if your vegan or vegetarian try their foods. The pro hint, make reservations on line. Con: busy lol, this is a good thing for sure

However, we visited one hot Saturday evening after booking a table online (which is a great idea) and the air con was either not on at all or up high because it was that hot in there is made my father ill, we were all sweating buckets within about 5 minutes..not a great start. We ordered starters and main courses for 6 of us, we were given our starters and before we had chance to even start these, one of the servers bought over one of the main courses, to which I asked him to take it back to the kitchen after he had stood there for a minute with it in my dad's face waiting for him to take it. I had the breadboard with oil and vinegar to start. The bread was advertised as freshly baked, it was disgusting, it was so dense and hard like it had been sat out in the hot kitchen for god knows how long. Our main courses were not much to be desired either. Another server bought food over but there was no room on the table to put any plates, I had fajitas which came with overly dry tortillas and not enough salsa/sour cream etc to go in one let alone four wraps. I had to ask for a plate and a spoon for mine which due to the fact there was no room on the table was given to me to hold.....anyone who eats fajitas will know you can't make them up whilst having to hold your own plate. I eventually lost my patience and asked them to clear all the empty glasses to make some space. Not once did anyone ask us how the food was. It's not like it was that busy either. Then came the bill. ..be very AWARE of this because they added a gratuity to ours without our knowledge, at no point was this mentioned to us and nor did we read it on the menu. The ironic thing was that our server had seen us all putting money in the silver dish for the tip as well and still never said anything.......very deceitful if you ask me as we ended up giving a tip of nearly £40!!!!!!!! Needless to say we won't be back. Food was pants, cocktails were small, restaurant far too hot and cramped tables.

Giraffe

I was pretty excited that there was a Giraffe opening in Swindon... even better that it is right…read morenext to Tesco so we could do our shopping after having dinner. When they opened, I told Mr. Snarky we had to go. I have a thing for their Farmers Market Burrito. I'm not a vegetarian, but this meat-less burrito is pretty good. When we visited the first time, we knew that there were probably still some glitches to be worked out, but we went anyway. We had a delayed starter, but we still would have given the visit four stars. In fact, even though you could tell our waitress was new, possibly even new to the restaurant business, she was so lovely. Fast forward a couple weeks and our experience was not so great. In fact, I apologized to Mr. Snarky for suggesting it. We arrived and were seated promptly, but after that, the service became slower. It was some time before our waitress came over to take our drink order and I noticed that drinks were piling up at the bar as none of the waitresses seemed to be paying attention. When the waitress took our food order, she didn't seem to know the menu as Mr. Snarky ordered the steak and she assumed he wanted the steak sandwich. After he cleared things up, she still didn't ask him what side he wanted or how he wanted his steak cooked. He got in that he would like Mash before she darted off. We had ordered the potstickers to share as a starter. You know that moment when you have been chatting and all of a sudden you realize that you are still without food after a considerable amount of time... well we realized that and shortly after we realized it, it looked like our waitress realized it as well. She had a word with the manager and the manager came over. She acknowledged the wait and said that our starter would be out in two minutes. She also offered to get us more drinks, which I just wanted a refill of tap water and Mr. Snarky was still drinking his Diet Coke. The potstickers showed up and we began to dig in. I bit into one and noticed that the center was cold. I put that one down and cut open another one. The center was cold. By this time, Mr. Snarky had noticed it as well. While I appreciate that they wanted to get our starter out to us quickly, I think it was more disappointing that the food was not cooked and had to be sent back. The manager apologized and while I don't think she meant to say this, she did say, "This isn't the first time this has happened." So now we were a bit worried. We opted to skip the starter and go straight to our mains. There was also a delay in getting our mains. I guess I would have thought that maybe the staff would have been a bit more diligent to correct the issue with the same table, but we got to watch a couple who had come in after us, receive their mains and finish before us. That said, the couple had a word with the manager as they had some complaints about their meal as well. When food arrived, one of the dishes was incorrect. When Mr. Snarky's steak came out... it was quite disappointing. There was a small, wilted pile of rocket, a small portion of mash, and a steak that had been cooked well done... perhaps a bit past the point of well done. He ate it, but we may have wandered into the Tesco Express after for a snack/dessert. My enchilada was ok... if you have had authentic Mexican food, you will know that this wasn't really an enchilada, more like a burrito bake. It was ok for what it was, but it was quite dry and mostly rice. The salad on the side was nice, but didn't seem to have any relation to the Enchilada. When our waitress cleared our table she was very apologetic and said that they had taken the starter off of our bill as well as one of our drinks. While Mr. Snarky was not impressed with that, I figured at least they had acknowledged the problems and were trying to make amends. We also were a little insulted by the addition of the optional gratuity charge, so I paid in cash, but the exact amount, less the gratuity charge. I know it is a new place, but Giraffe isn't new. While I know that glitches happen, I guess I would have thought a chain of this size would have figured it out by now.

The ambiance was perfect, the menu was hilarious, and there were board games and books to take advantage of, The service was absolutely phenomenal. The guy behind the counter was friendly, helpful, funny, and made our eating experience better for his serving us. The food was fantastic! We had some tapas, a chicken and avocado salad (and when I asked to substitute steak for the chicken and pay for the difference, it was done), and a Matador burger, all with drinks and dessert. The drinks were delicious, refreshing, and well thought out, the salad was perfect (though admittedly a bit on the small side for the price), the tapas were wiped-clean in a matter of 30 minutes, and the Matador Burger, though nothing to write home about, was filling and yummy. We did pay extra for the sweet potato fries, and were a bit disappointed by the amount of fries that extra $1.25 will get you, but with drinks and dessert it ended up a blessing in disguise. The sticky toffee sundae was something I wish I could eat every day of my life, and the churros (accompanied by two dipping sauces) were surprisingly good! (Being a Californian I have pretty high expectations of Mexican foods, expectations that Britain has managed to almost thoroughly crush, so these were a pleasant surprise). We look forward to coming back for breakfast and board games!
