Excellent service with fresh, delicious food served steaming hot. The naan bread is DELICIOUS - soft and tasty with some crispy areas. They alter spice from Very Mild to Hot, just ask! The scale is altered for an American pallet thus anymore can eat here. Tip: ordering medium spicy level was about an Indian very mild to mild. Mantra's a bit more pricey than other Indian restaurants for several reasons. You order a la cart however basmati rice does come with all entrees. The hot, Indian masala tea was very good but know it's a small cup without refills. Credit cards are charged a 3.5% admin fee. The atmosphere reminds me of a diner with Indian decor and has a tv showing Indian entertainment. Did I mention the friendly, family staff?! Top notch food! They cook with perfection. It's expensive, but worth it. We order different things... but some of our favorites are the Vegetable Korma and Lamb Curry. Little strip mall Indian restaurant. Menu items are not labeled as vegan or not but the person taking care of us knew exactly which ones were and not. He (Bobby) helped us order vegan items from the menu. We got the challa masala and a veggie curry, roti bread and a couple of veg somosas and the vegetable fried rice. We got the lowest spicy because of a friend that cannot handle spicy at all. It's all prepared fresh since we had to wait 30 minutes for our order. Staff was courteous and knowledgeable. I came with my sister to this place since we were in the area. The reviews were ok. So we decided to give it a try. We both ordered the daal soup and curry chicken. One medium heat the other one, mild heat. And naan. The food in general lacked flavor to me. It was heat and no flavor. The daal soup had too many chunks of ginger. It kept getting stuck on my throat making me cough. Could not eat it. The naan was too plain. Just flour dough. But the worse?? It was the price plus the gratuity of 20%. Mandatory!!! As stated by the menu in the back with small letter that I did not see. Or was not informed prior to ordering. I had gave the waiter already $5 cash tip. We hadn't been to Mantra in quite a while. So glad we came. Our food orders were unadventurous, by Indian standards: chicken korma for my wife, a chicken-and-rice dish for me, plus naan and raitha. We ordered our dishes "very mild." If you're at Kroger and buy your taco sauce in its "mild" version as you look to see whether they have an "extra mild" version, this is the thing to do at Mantra. I'm glad that (unlike some other Indian restaurants) they think to accommodate every preference, and don't presume you're interested in "suicide by spiciness." They ask on the front end--thank you. Manager "Bobby" and server "Sandy" were wonderful. Polite, welcoming, friendly. Our table service was first-rate. As to ambience...interesting. The room is much more brightly lit than some rivals (such as the also very good India Palace). The place is ultra-clean. I liked that the decor stayed well short of the corny faux-authenticity of many "ethnic" restaurants. Here, it's plain and pleasant. A great place for a date, or for a casual dinner with business associates. The food is good, the price is expensive, but last time I was there, I saw this bug crawling across the lobby. This is the second time I've seen cockroaches in the lobby. I have a huge aversion to bugs in my food so this makes me worry about the sanitary conditions of the kitchen. I know from working in a kitchen myself that when you clean efficiently and store food properly, bugs don't return. I don't think I'm going to order from Mantra anymore unfortunately. read more

This place is near my work so I decided to try them out and ordered to go on my way home from work one day. The food wasn't terrible it just didn't taste up to par with other places we usually go to. I can't see us coming back. The Garlic Naan was good but very thin and not very filling. The Tikka Masala was normal but somehow just not the same. It could be they make theirs differently based on what region they're from. It wasn't so horrible I wouldn't return but with so many other options around I just can't see us picking here again. The place is located within an odd corner/jog at a Germantown strip mall. It must be why I've driven by it so many times; unless you're looking for the establishment, it's easy to miss. With some of my favorite eateries closed for a federal holiday, I let my map navigator guide me over to an open restaurant. I'm a huge fan of Indian food, and Memphis has several eateries that do a fine job. Unfortunately, this particular place was subpar. I began by ordering an appetizer: samosas (two per order). The filling was tasty, but it was apparent that the samosas had been made a day or so previously, then warmed up in the microwave for my consumption. The amount of tamarind sauce that came on the side was minuscule. The masala (Indian) tea that I ordered, however, was made expressly for me. It was fresh, hot, and creamy. Unfortunately, no free refills. At $3.50 per small cup, it can get expensive quickly. Come to think of it, no refills of the one glass of water that was initially brought to my table. Understaffing? Laziness? Inattentiveness? The chickpea salad was just okay, with the tomatoes obviously not the ripest/freshest ingredient. My main course, the sabzi saag malai, was made to my spice comfort level, and obviously made on-the-spot for me. This was the most delicious item that I had, and the best part of my experience. Unfortunately, the only times that I was able to get someone to stop by my table was when food was being delivered. Not even my bill was dropped off. That's okay, because with a total of over $44.00 after taxes for one person, I violated my policy always providing a gratuity, due to the cavalier service. I was the lone customer eating inside. During my time there, I observed three take out orders. Despite having a fairly attractive dining area, this place seems like it's best suited for take out orders, as that seems to be where the owner's focus is at: being near the phone and cash register. Apparently, this restaurant has been open for the past four years. I hope that they improve their poor service. Met an old friend here for dinner and it was the perfect place. Low-key atmosphere, pretty clean and comfortable, and amazing food. We got samosas for an appetizer (no picture, sorry, but they were great!) and I had chicken curry, with some naan of course. It felt a little pricey, we each spent like $42 (with 20% tip) for just the entrees, naan, and the $10 app. Also, the service was a little slow, we had to wait for a minute to get more water which was tragic because I can't handle my spice. I saw this place open some time ago but never made it a point to stop in. Finally gave it a try but we will not be returning. Food: Butter chicken, palak paneer, aloo gobi, mixed tandoori grill, samosas, and butter naan. The vegetable dishes were watered-down and therefore bland. Mixed tandoori meal was over cooked and dry. The samosas and butter chicken were the better dishes. Service: About what is expected. With some disappointments. They were not that attentive and we were the only dine in customers during most of our meal. However, the real turnoff was the 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill. We were a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids. While I appreciate stellar service and tip accordingly, I don't like surprise auto charges. It's definitely not listed on the menu. In fact the menu states 18% for parties of 5 or more. Don't want to believe we were profiled buuuut it sure feels that way. Oh and bring cash. They also charge an additional 3.5% to pay by card. Tried this place for the first time today. I had high hopes but a few things ruined the experience. The food was just ok, I've had better, but definitely not worth the price. The service was sub par. Dropped food off never came back and had to flag them down to get more water yet added a 20% tip automatically to a 2 person table and then charged us for the credit card fee also. Food was okay BUT not worth that price at all. We went in for lunch on a Thursday mid-day at first thought it was closed we were the only people in there. We ordered a hot tea took roughly 20 minutes to get and it was really good the food was okay but extremely expensive for what was served i asked for Spicy and the dude was unwilling to make it that way for me. He sat and just dead eyed us the entire time. My original plate i asked for he said no it would take to long to make so i switch to a chicken dish it too took almost 45 minutes to make. He would not make me more tea even though i paid for it. Yes, they charge for every single cup of tea the food was good took way to long so yes they could have made what i wanted originally but refused. I got the soup it was very good but the size of a small expresso cup and $6 they charged for Naan bread for the two of us it was $80 for a soup, tea, water, 2 lunch and naan bread. They charged me for 2 hot teas but only brought me 1 THEY ALSO CHARGE YOU TO USE YOUR OWN DEBT CARD. So between the over charged tea cost $4 and $4 to use my own debt card i left him $2 tip there are so many OTHER indian food places to choose from. This place has only been opened for two days, but it seems like this place has been opened for far longer. Service was pretty good. Mango Lassi (mango yogurt drunk) is really good. It had a lot of mango puree, but not enough yogurt IMHO. But I appreciate that they give a lot of mango puree, cause it's better this than the other way around! The Gobi Manchuria (spicy breaded fried cauliflower) is great. They should advertise this as vegetarian/vegan hot wings or something. The herbs they throw on top of this makes it my favorite place to get Gobi Manchurian in town. The Paneer Tikki Masala (cottage cheese in spicy buttery sauce) is fantastic. The waiter actually had to confirm my order three times because I ordered it hot. "Are you sure you don't want mild instead?" How dare you underestimate me! Haha! The dish was awesome, better than how most Indian buffets would serve it. I feel like they used the good paneer too. I would definitely order again. The gulab jamun (milk duds in syrup) is good too. There are actually multiple depths to its sweetness that I'm a fan. The reason I'm docking one star off is because this place lied to me! The website says lunch buffet, but there's not one. Both had zero taste. I grocery stores that sell sauces in bottles have more flavor than this Then, the restaurant added a 20% tip. I can understand if it's a large party that you're serving.
