I went to buy some tamales today, I usually buy oaxaqueños and regular tamales every time, my oaxaqueños were fine but when I got to the Verde tamal, surprise! Tamal was raw! Please come here if you want to be ashamed of something. I remember this place when it first opened up. I really like supporting local businesses and prefer giving them my money rather than going to any chain. I've always thought the food here was pretty good and was glad to have another taqueria that's even closer to my house. Until: I walked in, asked for a torta and was told they ran out of the torta bread. Came again, asked for tacos de asada and was told they had no more meat. Visited again and was told they ran out of the burrito tortillas. Saw the lady cook eating her lunch all sloppily at the counter and then proceeded to walk into the back to start cooking without washing her hands. I've frequented other businesses MUCH busier than this place and *they* NEVER run out of ingredients. I will admit that the food is pretty tasty, the salsa is better than a lot of places, BUT they truly have no excuse for much of the sloppiness and inadequacy plaguing this taqueria. UPDATE: came back for redemption visit (or because I'm a masochist). It was so nice and refreshing to see that things don't change. The cook in the back had (and I'm not exaggerating) a volleyball size chunk of round frozen meat that she was trying to defrost and cook at the same time as she was picking it apart with a spatula. No hair net, no apron, no gloves, and a pair of lovely flip flops. read more

Manolos has to much masa and really NO meat for the NEW heavy price of $15 plus tax. I realized that these people don't care to much of there clients as I have ate tamales that tasted like dirty pans with a dirty rag. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS TAMALES FOR THE HEAVY PRICE THEY WANT. They used to be good. I used to come here all the time when I wanted tamales. At first they were really good but now their memory is all that is left. Their tamales are huge but it is mostly masa and no filling. And not even the masa is good. It is so spongy and underseasoned. Gotta give it to them, the arroz con leche is still good as well as their guayaba atole. but when it comes to tamales, I drive a little bit more to the next tamaleria. I came in and ordered a dozen in a half of tamales, verdes y rojos de pollo. I was charged $23.98. When I got home, I realized the cashier gave me back $6.02. I called to let them know they shorted me. They were kind enough to tell me they will give me what they owe me. The green chicken tamales were very watery and the masa was falling apart. Not very tasty. I ordered red chicken tamales but instead got the pork ones. They were not watery like the green ones. But nonetheless not as good as I expected, I think the street venders do a better job than the actual restaurants. read more

I live in Evanston and I would not go anywhere else for tamales. I was just there this past weekend and got a dozen Oaxaqueno tamales. I have tried all their tamales, but those are my favorites. They open up very early, so I was there to get tamales by 8:00 AM on a Sunday and thought I may as well get some breakfast too. I ordered the Steak Quesadilla and it was incredibly good. For $4 you get a Quesadilla made in a buritto sized tortilla and a very generous portion of grilled steak piled inside. It also comes with a side of sour cream, a side of Guacamole, and lettuce and tomato. I will agree that there is just a bit of a wait for the food, but just have a seat and watch the Mexican Music Videos on the television above the counter. The food is well worth waiting a few minutes. Just writing about it makes me want to make another stop there this weekend. read more

They used to be good probably 5 years ago, now they are ridiculous small, they rise the price to 1.25 a piece plus tax and to make it worst you might get tamales from the day before. The service had always been bad, the 4 ladies in the front aré rude and arrogant, they think they're the owners, I would fired them all, only the guy in the back always kind of polite, and one more thing be very careful because these ladies either they over charge you or they missed tamales in your count, this happened in a long period of time and I kept going but enough is enough!!!! No more I'm done with this place. Now I recommend you a little stand right outside the Panaderia on California and 43rd I believe, they are good, more chicken, bigger and only for $1 without taxes!!!! This place is Over rated!!! Whenever I'm in a hurry and I'm hungry I can always depend on this place to have good tasting food and great prices. I have never actually ate in but the place always looks nice and clean. They have a variety of Mexican food but I have to say there specialty is serving up tamales. I would recommend this place to my friends. The food really is appetizing. Growing up my mom used to buy Manolos tamales when they were street vendors in front of the laundromat. Unfortunately, their tamales are not as good as they used to be. I get the green tamales either chicken or pork and sadly they are always dry. Today was my last time giving them a chance. I was driving south on kedzie this morning, keeping an eye out for some tasty looking grub. what usually grabs my attention is a pig or chicken selling it's demise, but today it was a beautiful picture of a smothered tamale. i'm not sure what that tamale was covered in, but because it looked so good i made a beeline inside. once inside, i knew i hit the jackpot when there was a line 7 people deep. they have all sorts of tamales, including the elusive oaxacan tamale, stripped pepper with cheese, beans and cheese and even savory ones. each tamale I had was the best of it's kind i ever had. the masa is fluffy and moist and just kind of melts in your mouth. it almost had the texture of cake! they also have a variety of alotes (warm sweet fruit drinks) and the guayaba version i had was phenomenal. get here early because when i was there at 10:30, they had sold out of most of their tamales. i would give this restaurant 10 stars if i could. read more

This place is just ok. After reading all these raving reviews, my expectations where a bit higher. Prices for tamales are standard to other places. Like other reviews, I wish the tamales were spicer. I ordered the cheese and the chicken. I felt that the tamales needed more filling. There was barely any cheese in the tamale, mainly consisting of masa. The tamales were a bit bland and didn't have too much flavor. Will try another place in the future when searching for tamales. read more

we have bought these tamales for over 4yrs now, we buy them almost once a week on Fri or Sat mornings, and lately the last 6months roughly, they have really been horrible.. I just purchased 1dozen this morning, and literally, all tamales only have 1 piece of meat! I even have a picture I wish I can post.. I just called to complain and ask If I can return them and get my money back and they said no because I need my receipt. If I would have known this was going to happen I sure would have saved it! Plus I asked if they can check their debit/credit machine since I paid with my debit card and I can show them proof of purchase and they did not accept that.. I also bought half dozen 1 week and a half ago and the tamales were not done yet. when you opened them, all the tamale fell apart because they were all mushy!!! I have been ordering tamales from this location for several years during the holidays, even when I lived in Indianapolis for a couple of years.This year when trying to place an order for pick up I was informed that pre ordering would only be done if I purchased 10 dozen tamales, I was extremely surprised by the new rule of such an absurd amount! I could understand such rule if customers were just reserving tamales without pre paying, however I have always paid in full for my order. I ended up ordering the 10 dozen and pre paid in full for my order. The day of pick up, which was scheduled and I was on time I wanted to walk and walk out with my order, instead I had to stand there waiting for them to put my order together. Many rules which are not for the convenience of the customer, credit card orders get charged a 3% extra charge and the day I was there the credit card machine was not working, so would only take cash, luckily I had pre paid for my order. The tamales were not very good and several of them had fallen apart and all I had left were the husk. They were dense and yearly have gotten smaller and smaller. This will be the last year I will order and have permanently lost a loyal customer! read more
