Found this place by accident while I was in the area. It's got this cool coffee-brewery setup where you can actually see how they make everything and the Russian space theme is a nice touch. Right up my alley. I got an almond croissant and a hot chocolate. The croissant came out warm, crispy on the outside, soft and flaky inside. The almonds made it even better, adding a crunch and nutty flavor in every bite. It's the small details that just makes the whole thing different. The hot chocolate was rich, creamy and it had an after taste that I couldn't figure out but it matched perfectly with the croissant. The guys working there (pretty sure they were the owners) were super friendly and easygoing. Only thing is, they take their time with the drinks but you can tell it's because they actually care about what they're making. Totally worth the wait. When i discovered "Sputnik Coffee" when it was still on the W. 51st St. in Gage Park a few years ago, I just thought "what a gem!" The drip of coffee back in early 2019 was a buck and my budget for coffee wasn't ample at that time. Overall, the prices I saw on the menu warmed my heart. I follow "Sputnik" on the Instagram and know that they have moved in a much larger venue in McKinley Park. I don't live anywhere close to the southwest side of the city, but my partner and I took a trip on a Tuesday morning because we didn't think there would be another opportunity to do so with our work and personal schedules. Items are much pricier, but it is what it is with ongoing civilization. They now also have cafe-style pastries and sandwiches. I decided to treat myself a cup of cappuccino. It was frothy and strong. Good thing was that the smoked salmon sandwich slowed down the effect of caffeine, yet I should have ordered one of these nice-looking Belgian waffles as well. The cafe roastery is located on a neighborhood street, across from James Shield Middle School. The tables are spread out, unlike many smaller coffeeshops one find in the Northside. Overall, the place is great for individuals who enjoy a little more privacy in public. I also got myself a souvenir t-shirt. I just love the design and a slight touch of Chicago red stars that were incorporated with the graphics. I actually didn't notice that CTA Western Orange Line station was nearby, approximately 5-minute walk away. However, street parking was what we needed and was quite east to find. read more

My husband raves about this coffee, but we live in the north suburbs, and it's over an hour drive to get down here. The menu is rather limited, and there's no indoor seating. There was outdoor seating, which was nice for a little while before it got too sunny and we had to leave. The coffee is good. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. Be sure to stir the drink because the vanilla is at the bottom. Good thing the coffee beans are sold in stores so we can still have Sputniks at home. read more

Sputnik has been on my list of cafes to try for many years and I finally got a chance to stop by. They roast on site and you can peak behind the register to see all the machinery in action. I had a delicious iced latte which was made perfectly. They also have a rotating menu of tasty looking pastries and some merch with their adorable dog mascot. Service was fast and friendly and the barista let me know their coffee can be found throughout Chicago land grocery stores. Excited to stock up for home! read more

Edit: I've just come a few weeks later, and would like to add that their matcha is nice (better quality than some other places I've been to recently!) and they also have a wheelchair lift that I did not notice before! Love the accessibility of the place. Original review: Very cute place with nice workers. The inside is really bright and airy feeling, with lots of seating area. Perfect for computer work or just to chill with a book. I definitely recommend the mocha coffee. However, the chai was very cinnamon-heavy; you couldn't really taste the other spices. The cold brew is amazing, Totally in love with it. It is delicious and affordable. This is at the Chicago's historic Back of the Yards neighborhood. The shop is diverse, doesn't matter what you are and how. The customer service there is awesome, friendly and they are super nice. You are welcome to talk to them. Bring pretty awesome conversation. They % friendly. During covid, they were open even in hard time and now they are still open. I like this shop because it has a history, the care and passion for coffee especially cold brew. I enjoy my cold brew there is different, they can add flavor if you want, milk or whatever you need. Best part of the cold brew it's a sip lid that has a cover on top of it. Lifesaver. The food is really good. I enjoy it all. When walking in, they do have hand sanitizer. They do they card and cash. One of the best coffees ever. I live close to this place so I'm a regular. I always get the vanilla latte and my husband the mocha with oatmeal. Their coffees are strong and don't have much sugar but they taste so good. You must try their pastries, they are to die for. I always get the pistachio bread and their Beignets. The amount on sugar on top is the right amount. Service is always good, the lady that works there is nice and she makes the best coffee there. They also a small gift shop where you can get Sputnik merchandise. They have shirts, pins, mugs and more. The place itself it's very clean and very hipster. They have sitting outside and inside. Excited to visit this new location. The coffee was unique and tasty. This location has a very genuine look and feel and I noticed that it also has a wheelchair lift, which I've never seen before in a coffee shop. KUDOS for making it accessible. The music was very low key and I was easily able to concentrate on work. I spent a few hours there and felt very pleasant the entire time. The staff is very courteous and friendly. One of the reasons I like the North side of Chicago is that you can find these cute, intimate restaurants, coffee houses. I live on the southwest side of Chicago and we don't usually experience these types of spots...until now. I was heading east on 51st street and saw this nicely decorated corner spot with a sign that read $1 coffee. What??? I am so there. I found street parking and entered the spot. A guy behind the counter spoke and was very nice. I ordered a glazed donut & the $1 coffee. He informed me that they make their own coffee, can grind the beans for u. Nice decor, nice ambiance, the donut melted in my mouth and the coffee was refreshing. Will I be back?? No doubt. I hope to see more spots like this. We need it. read more

"Cafe Week: Sputnik Coffee Company" Thanks to Yelp Cafe Week, I made a point to get back here for a cup of great coffee. I also had the Spinach Feta Pie and a sample of the blueberry scone. The scone - -the last scone left that morning - - was heavenly. The spinach Pie is best when heated and heated it is the best! Short hours on weekdays : 6 AM to 1 PM and closed on Sundays. : (. Hours on Saturday are 7 AM to 4 PM. : ) Bakery goods - - which are provided fresh daily by Delightful Pastries - - usually sell out quickly and I do mean quickly! : ( It was just a bit after 8 AM and I would have had more than a sample of a scone if there had been more scones to be had! Moral of story: the early bird gets the best selection of pastries but great coffee is available throughout the hours Sputnik is open. read more

I'm giving it 2 stars because everyone else is saying how great the coffee, but I did not try it. The inside has no sitting not comfortable no café experience. It has a outdoor patio that you use occasionally but it's useless in cold weather. I know it's in a rough neighborhood but you should be able to sit down and not get beaten while getting coffee. I guess this hood is not gentrified yet. read more

First, the coffee is incredible. They take great pride in roasting the perfect beans, and let me tell you if they aren't perfect they are pretty darn close. Second, the atmosphere at the cafe is warm and welcoming. It was a great place to hang out pre covid, but they still go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. I go in there pretty much every morning for coffee and also for a quick chat. Much credit goes to their fantastic barista Angelica. Always friendly with kind words. I enjoy supporting independent coffee roasters so my recent trip to Chicago was a perfect opportunity. Tucked away in a residential area of the neighborhood known as Behind the Yards lies Sputnik Coffee. During my visit they were busy roasting beans. The gentleman behind the counter was polite and had a true desire to ensure I enjoyed my visit. I ordered a drip coffee and was treated to a sweet treat. I stayed briefly after doctoring up my drink.
