I stayed here for two nights in March of 2022, and wish I could have stayed longer! The first day, I thought I was guaranteed to see an apparition, given the house was built in 1914, the history of Mānoa Valley, and the turreted Victorian architecture. But the more time I spent here, this house grew on me. I was lucky to have the Davies room on the third floor (note that there are no elevators, and there are no plans to add ADA access because the house is on the National Registry of Historic Places). Awesome view of Waikīkī at sunrise and golden hour. Being 6'1" the bathroom can be awkward with its placement under a steep-sloped gable, requiring me to stand a little closer to the shower head and sink. The house has that smell like grandma's house, but it's expected with any wooden building this old. Top-notch antiques decorate every corner in a tasteful way. The saltwater pool is an added comfort, and the breakfasts made to order by Tomomi and her daughter is plain ol' good homecooking. Owner Scott Glen put a lot of money, time, and sweat into making this place wonderful. The five ducks, cat, and miniature pinscher are fun housemates! read more

Took a time out from life and escaped to the historic Manoa Valley Inn ( also known as the John Guild House) . I immediately jumped in the outdoor saltwater pool. It was private and cooling. I was lucky to have the inn pretty much to myself. I was afraid that it would be haunted but I felt a welcoming atmosphere throughout my stay. I took the John Guild Suite. I felt sad to learn John Guild had embezzled money from the Dillingham company to build this house. He was caught and had to turn the home over to the Dillinghams -- had a quiet evening after having an Italian dinner at a nearby restaurant. Was very quiet and I slept very well. The family that took over the inn was very pleasant and created a terrific breakfast in the morning. I will be returning when I can. You would need to climb stairs if u want the John Guild or Dillingham suites. I did see a clown loach in the aquarium. Haven't seen one in ages and remembered that in the wild they can grow very large. Checking out was done smoothly and felt refreshed to begin the work week again read more

Manoa Valley Inn USED TO be really customer friendly. Apparently the owners has moved back to Japan and new owners are running the place I didn't know this and I booked for two nights The service is horrible, and the girl that runs the place is rude and confrontational and talked with no respect to the customer when I asked for plain black tea in the morning. They don't have regular black tea that is caffeinated and since I don't drink coffee , I need tea to wake up in the morning. And when I asked, the person started speaking very aggressively towards me. And try to make me feel bad for asking for regular tea. And then she loudly saying I am too early for breakfast because they are not ready and it's 7:30 am My room was not clean, the bathroom had toothpaste marks on the counter and no hand soap at all and the where the soap used to sit is cake on dried soap on the counter. I cleaned it myself before I went to bed last night There is no manager that runs the place The over all experience there is so horrible, I would never want anyone to experience something like I did. I have never run into a bed and breakfast with such rude attitude and no respect for their customer. Please don't come to this bed and breakfast! It's horrible! And I am a very tolerant person most of the time unless someone disrespects me and acts aggressive towards me. read more

I was not sure what I was going to get when I booked this place. I am so happy that I did! Located in Manoa it still gave me the comfort of semi country life no hustle or bustle of city life. The whole trip was planned to visit our newly born grandson and this location was within minutes of their home. The place is on the National Historic list and I loved the whole atmosphere of the area. It is run by a family that resides on the premises and is available should you need them. read more

On the morning we were due to arrive they sent us an email saying they had overbooked the inn, and even though we'd reserved a room, they couldn't accommodate us. My boyfriend and I were in a pinch and needed a room last minute. I was a little bit nervous because I read the reviews about there not being a shower, breakfast being lousy and it smelling like wet dog and whatever else people had said. My experience was completely different. We were welcomed by a beautiful Japanese woman who explained to us the house has been around since 1912 and was family-owned-and-operated. Due to the house being of age they kept an old fashioned style throughout the home. I found it very endearing. We stayed in the Baldwin room and my boyfriend whom is 6ft 2in did have a hard time fitting into the bed I on the other hand had no problem at my 5 foot stature. The shower is very roomy the bathroom is super cute and the bed was comfortable. The only issue I had was in the morning I was woken up by the rooster with the window open so that night I close the window and I had no issue the following morning. When we went downstairs we felt like we were in our families home a young man made us pancakes which were great with homemade strawberry jam and there was plenty of other selection of food items for breakfast including coffee, milk, fresh fruit, potatoes, bacon and more. I would prefer staying at a home like this over a hotel any day. They did have some dogs running around that you only saw in the morning but I didn't care. The dogs are well-behaved and didn't bother me whatsoever. read more

We stayed in the Baldwin room. It's a very spacious has an up-to-date modern bathroom with old world light fixtures. Great hot water. The bed was king size. The breakfast was very tasty. With eggs cooked order, toast and English muffins, various meats and potatoes. Lots of good coffee. The owners are on site and very willing to chat at the end of the day. We jumped into the saltwater pool, just to give it a go. The weather was not warm but the pool felt very nice. Really enjoyed the sound of the water, the visual of the gardens, the sound of the birds, just beautiful. The only downside was that I felt the bed was too firm for me. My husband was fine with it. When I spoke with the owners they sent some additional bedding for me to put down to soften the bed. read more

This Inn has many wonderful attributes. A comfortable, quiet atmosphere with a nice second floor public room, 1st floor porch, and garden. Big turn of the century rooms and big windows through which a nice breeze and bird songs waft through. Great breakfast - rice w/ vegetables, or fruit, or pancakes or eggs. And, an incredible view down the valley from the breakfast porch. Just a five minute walk to the central UH campus. A great, attentive staff. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Love the garden, the porch, the pool and breakfast. It's very intimate bed and breakfast and it's very clean. However, here are the things to note: * They need a better way for parking * All you will get is a liquid soap in a bottle that smells great! - So bring your own soap/shampoos/conditioner/lotion. * It's a humid state and they keep the room windows open, so the sheets has musty smell. (When your dish sponge is old smell). * There is a massage service for $68. We have not tried it yet, but we will when we're back. read more

The location is away from all of the Waikiki insanity. It's an historical landmark. The rooms are tranquil and relaxing. It has a salt water pool. The owners and staff are so kind and helpful. I would only recommend that they upgrade their mattresses and add blackout curtains. I love sunlight but not right at the crack of dawn. Haha! read more

A completely terrible place. Disgusting smell all over the house. The restroom in the bedroom I was, did not have a shower, just a tub that I couldn't stand, the ceiling was really low, I could barely stay in it crouched, pathetic place. Carpets all over with disgusting stains. Just a complete nightmare, I left as soon as I could. Oh, the breakfast was disgusting too, I don't know how, but they were able to make bacon look completely disgusting: it was basically raw and really old, mixed with large chunks of purple cabbage (yea... for breakfast). Seriously a dream staycation! Loved this place! and how it took you to a different era! I stayed in the Cooke's room which is ideally good for 2 people and possible a little one. Definitely recommend booking at least one night stay here. Staff is very nice! Place offers wifi, a/c, tv, private room, private bath, towels, clean sheets, blankets, hair dryer, body soap, and breakfast/coffee 7:30 am - 9:30 am. There is a beautiful garden and pool in the back. Check-in is easy and after 3 pm. I booked through airbnb and from start the finish the service here is superb! Keep in the mind the house is historic so it's not your luxury 5 star hotel, but it's so cozy and lovely i would chose this place over an expensive waikiki hotel any day! My only suggestion is to bring your own shampoo/conditioner as that is not provided. There are also 4 adorable dogs on the property! Parking is on property as there are is a small parking lot in the back. read more

My wife and I stayed at the Manoa Valley Inn for 2 nights during our trip to Oahu.We liked the fact that it was away for the busy areas of Honolulu. We opted for the Dole Junior suite. From the description, we knew the view wouldn't be as good as some of the more expensive rooms, and we were fine with it. But what we couldn't tell from the description or the pictures was that the bed would be so uncomfortable, and that you would have to be a contortionist in order to use the bathroom. The Dole room is on the top floor, under the roof and there is no way to stand in the tub in order to take a shower!! You have to bend in half in order to use the toilet or get into the tub, and after a bad night sleep, it would be nice to at least be able to get a good shower. Nope. On a much more positive note, the breakfast (included) is great! Eggs, rice, pastries, bacon/sausage, fruit, homemade pancakes, etc!! In summary, if you want to stay at the Manoa Valley Inn, don't cheap out, and ask for a room on the 2nd floor. I don't know if the bed will be more comfortable, but at least you should be able to stand in the shower!! read more

My boyfriend surprised me with a stay at the Manoa Valley Inn for my birthday this year. It was the BEST bed and breakfast we've ever stayed in! It was like we were welcome into an old friend's home for a weekend. A little escape from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki... and swept into another time and space. My daughter and I stayed here as we needed a place close to UH Manoa to move her in to the dorm. We had no desire to be in the middle of the Waikiki Beach tourist scene. Wow! What a unique experience! Phenomenal gardens and secluded pool in the back; excellent breakfast/service from Tomami. Regal old Hawaii with a home-like atmosphere. It's a multigenerational family home, of which we felt like an extension of for a few days. An experience I will not soon forget. Hopefully we will visit again soon ... read more

We stayed at this place for 3 nights and it was an amazing experience. We stayed in the suite and the rooms were really nice ! The view was really good on the other side of the stairs where they have a small room with a few chairs. the owners and the caretakers are nice and very helpful. The rooms has a 100 year old feel to it from the aesthetics and furniture. The backyard is huge and really beautiful too. The only 3 thing we didn't like were: The pool was kinda dirty but we didn't really care about it a lot even though my girlfriend was looking forward to it earlier. The checkout time told to us during reservation and on their information material was 11 but someone knocked on our door at 9:45 that we have to vacate saying that the checkout time is 10 and they have others checking in later in the room. Not enough power outlets in the rooms. I could only find 1 open outlet in the 2 rooms. Overall it was a very nice experience and i would definitely recommend this place read more

This Historic Bed & Breakfast is Truly Wonderful. I stayed in the Master Suite on the 2nd Floor and was more then happy! Upon opening the door to my room I was moved emotionally & felt an almost instant connection with the B & B ( which actually started from the moment I set foot in the main door). I needed a last minute change to my Vacation Plans after arriving on the Island & they were able to accommodate me for 2 nights out of the 4 that I needed I wanted to stay longer, but they were booked (I was on the Island for 7 nights, but after my first 3 night's at a Friends Place, I was left without a bed). The Bed in my room was So Extremely Comfortable that I felt like a Princess Everyone was Accomodating & Friendly from my initial phone call & booking to my 1st step in their door; which included their dogs! ( I like most dogs alot). The backyard grounds were lovely & the saltwater Pool/Pond/ Waterfall was Beautiful and Perfect for me. I also enjoyed an amazing hiking trail only about 10 minutes away in a Rainforest, which added to the highlights of my vacation. My whole experience here & the location were the Highest Points of my Trip to Oahu -- Diamond Head Hike from Waikiki was a close second. When I come to Oahu again, this is where I want to stay-- HANDS DOWN! PS -- The View is SPECTACULAR here! (from the 2nd Floor sitting room -- I spent alot of time here). I also walked into Waikiki & took in the amazing scenery ( but I like walking & hiking). I even ordered in food via Door Dash for dinner and ate in the Sitting room!-- PS -- I had my own sitting room which I also enjoyed tremendously! read more

I was very skeptical about this place. My wife twisted my arm to stay here during our anniversary trip to Oahu. I am a resort guy and love everything about resorts. That being said, I fell in love with this place. Very comfortable and relaxing. The breakfast is amazing! Not your typical breakfast; but when the ladies ask if you want pancakes, don't let this moment pass you by. Pancakes are the best I've ever had. Be prepared for no AC (couple rooms have window units). We did learn that this was true Hawaiian living. It was very comfortable at night (all rooms have fans). It was in a great part of town. Manoa Valley is a lovely community that is just minutes from Honolulu and Waikiki. I would recommend this place to ANYONE. Such a great place to stay and the staff is wonderful. read more

Beautiful home with great views. Owners have at least 3 dogs, so be prepared for some of the dogs to come and greet. There is also an ornery cat running around, so If you are not an animal lover, this place may not be for you. I believe all the rooms are on the second and third floor. We stayed in the Baldwin, which featured a king bed and was very spacious. Everything is decorated with the theme of the house, which is an old fashion bed and breakfast feel to it. The gardens are pretty and the pool is surrounded by lush foliage. Wifi is free, which I thought was standard until we got charged for wifi at a resort. So now I always mention if there is free wifi. Breakfast is in the back patio with a great view. It was good with eggs cooked to order, and a side bar with things like bacon and potatoes warming in them. This changes day by day, sometimes there are vegetables in the warmers, or some sort of ethnic item. There is lots of fresh fruit and yogurt, along with your basic staples like bread and oatmeal. I enjoyed my stay here. I was missing my dogs at home so I got my animal kicks by petting their dogs every morning and trying to pet their cat that swiped at me. I will come back to stay here again on my next trip. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights in the Baldwin room and loved it. Very beautiful house in a great location! When we walked in the Inn we were greeted by two dogs which were very friendly once they got to know you. We met Monica who was very nice and showed us around the grounds. Once in our spacious room we dropped off our baggage and headed out to town. What I really like about Manoa Valley Inn is the location. It took about 10 mins to drive to Waikiki but it felt worlds apart. I've always like the Manoa area. Breakfast was served at 7:30-9:30 and was great. Eggs were cooked to order and lots of fresh fruit to eat. I really enjoyed our stay. My only complaint is the bed, was a little too hard for my liking. Anyways I will probably stay here again on our next trip to Oahu. read more

Very charming and a great retreat in a hidden spot!

My husband and I stayed one night in the Guild Master Suite on the second floor. The old building was situated in a quiet neighborhood one block from the University of Hawaii campus. Our unit has 2 spacious rooms, a big closet, a refrigerator, and a bathroom with tub and standing shower. The good: --Standing shower with great water pressure: love it. --Well-lit rooms with a lot of windows and circulating fresh air. No need for AC during the winter months. --Refrigerator in the room. --Water, hot water maker and tea bags available all day - USDA organic lemon ginger, green and chai tea bags --Charming gardens in the front and the back. --Beautiful chandeliers in the common areas. --Great breakfast with a lot of fruits, hot and cold offerings: fresh pineapple, red and green grapes; ratatouille, braised sausage and vegetables, steamed rice in rice cooker, braised cabbage and mushroom, sauteed/baked potatoes in 1-inch cubes, and another hot entree I forgot to name; bread assortments (3 croissants, 2 rye bread slices, a few whole wheat bread slices, a few white bread slices, some other bread types...), a bread toaster that may not work but we didn't need it. A lady staff offered to make us pancakes or eggs upon order. We requested pancakes and she brought them out beautifully with strawberry preserve on top. It looked much better than it tasted. They used a bad batter from a box. Skip making pancakes and eggs to order. As long as they offer sufficient fresh fruits, hot and cold food and vary the dishes daily, there is no need to make pancakes and eggs to order. --Mark the owner told us about local attractions and restaurants. The bad: --The website pictures may have been taken 10 to 20 years ago and did not accurately describe the place. --Unused, unmaintained pool where mosquitoes breed and feed on you - We did not care for a pool and was not disappointed. Maybe drain the water to avoid mosquitoes laying eggs? --Old windows in our unit, some did not open all the way up. --Wall paper flaking and bubbly up --Uncomfortable couch and sofa in our unit --Old, stained carpet in our unit. --The old matching wood furniture desperate for a varnish and oil application many years ago (head board, bed side tables, dresser/chest of drawers) - now they dried out and cracked to a point of no return. --Tremendous dust build-up in the air-conditioning unit: either take out the AC unit or dust it with the Swiffer duster available at Costco or Target. --Thin walls and windows - we could hear conversations and noise from the upstairs people at night. --Old building with great potentials and a desperate need for renovation. A $300,000-complete renovation over 6 months with no occupancy would turn this place upside down like how Harry did it with his Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale, CA (Harry may have spent over $500,000 in his renovation). Glen and Jena own a Hawaiian treasure, a historic building with enormous potentials. I hope they completely renovate it to its true grandeur. Lastly, on the day we checked out, the lady staff who made us pancakes earlier knocked on our door at 9 am with a phone on her ear. She said "sorry" but did not explained herself. At 9:35 am, a Japanese man in his 30's knocked on our door. He said "sorry" and left. He did not explained himself either. He was not a staff member. My husband had seen him talking to Jena, the wife owner, the night before and in the morning. Those two bizarre encounters was the main reason that we would not return in addition to the outdated property. It was fine to remind us the 10 am check-out time. But it was unacceptable to keep knocking on guests' doors without clear intention and explanation. We indeed checked out by 10 am, said good-bye to Jena, and left the keys where she told us. read more

The Inn is in a convenient location, with easy access to H-1 and away from Waikiki crowds and traffic. The UH campus is only steps away and the neighborhood was very quiet when we were there, as classes were out. The building is a turn-of-the century house with a cute bit of garden and a covered patio where breakfast is served. Full disclosure: I am not a fan of American Bed-and-Breakfasts, with their usual foofy, faux-antique junk and their garrulous guests (and sometimes hosts). However, I expect them to be clean and up-to-date. This one, although not exactly unclean, is in need of a serious scrubbing and painting. The wiring is outdated and the lighting grossly inadequate (I rediscovered my facial hair in the airplane bathroom on the flight home), which doesn't inspire confidence in the maids' ability to vacuum the rooms thoroughly. Several dogs in various states of health roam the downstairs common areas. I was offered the use of an outdoor bed by the small pool that looked appealing from afar, but harbored several days' (weeks?) worth of mouse droppings. Again, the room we stayed in wasn't noticeably unclean, but the whole place was run a little too casually for my taste. As a pleasant surprise considering the building's age, our room was quiet; we couldn't hear occupants in the adjacent rooms, although they were always occupied. There is no A/C, although it wasn't a problem at night, thanks to the breezes. I slept well for a week. read more
