Breakfast can either be American Continental or Japanese Style. The yard is on an inlet to a saltwater pond and there is a stunning view of the Ko'olau Mountain range. Unfortunately, the conditions of the cottages weren't accurately depicted in the website photos. Neglected upkeep, noticeably inadequate cleaning, insects crawling on the floors, and unprofessional interactions with the management team. There aren't many options on this side of Oahu, but I don't recommend staying here. We were expecting rustic, but this property fell short on the following for us. 1. Grungy bathroom with only a retrofit micro shower. 2. Smoke detector missing from one of the bedroom ceilings. 3. Greasy substance on kitchen counter and cabinet doors. 4. Debris on top of the backrest of the well-worn couch. 5. Dirty windows and worn out screens. 6. Gross trash on the sidewalk at the stairs up to cottage 11. 7. Lots of rust and dry rot that require exterior repairs. 8. Flock of about 150 pigeons roosting and defecating on the roofs and power lines at the property entrance and parking area. 9. Worn out bedding blanket. 10. Window blinds in disrepair. We tolerated all of this without complaint. However, we did ask the person at the onsite office, Jennifer, to ask the guests staying in the unit above ours to please respect the stated quiet hours, especially when their young children would wake up and loudly begin their day before 6:00 AM. She said she'd have Tommy address this with them that afternoon. No change that night, and we checked the onsite office multiple times the next day but it was always locked. After another two nights of disrupted sleep for all four of us without follow up from management, we decided to cut our losses and leave a day early. Since the office was still unstaffed, we called the offsite management office. At that point, things went from bad to worse when they were extremely rude to us. They kept saying that we did not give them an opportunity to address the issues when we had done exactly that in person a few days before. But in their minds, since we had not called the emergency phone number, our other efforts did not count. Carolyn Rose's apology to us consisted of, "I'm sorry you were confused about how to contact us about the situation."

Plenty of space to spread out for the 12 of us, while the upstairs, front unit (11?) was big enough for us all to eat and hangout together. The "courtyard" also worked well for gatherings and Carolyn pulled out some folding tables for us. Each unit has kitchen and living areas for privacy, but we felt all together in a mansion. The area and shops etc was fine, we felt like locals. The beach is incredible, and the walk down in literally 2 min. You take your coffee cup down there, and there might have been 2 people and 6 miles of beach. Water safe and warm and clean and amazing. Local park right next to us was pleasant and not a disturbance. We where there new years on 2024, and had the time of our lives

Upon arrival, we noticed that the house was at the end of a well off neighborhood. The backyard contained a lot of wooden antiques and knick-knacks stored from floor to ceiling. These were blended into a huge two-level backyard that flourished with huge trees, a menagerie of plants, and wildlife... specifically Sunny the cat, who would mew his greetings to us and bask in the sun. Our host, Brooke, was born and raised on the island and was a great source of recommendations and insight towards our experience. She made sure we had local fruit and homemade breakfast each day during our stay, and was more than accommodating with extra supplies (cooler, beach towels, sunscreen/mosquito repellent). We stayed for two nights in grandpa's apartment and when we had to head out extra early for our first day on the island, Brooke set aside our breakfast so we could have food when we got back. We would definitely come back and recommend it for people who value making connections and experiencing the island with people who call Hawaii home.

But the more time I spent here, this house grew on me. I was lucky to have the Davies room on the third floor (note that there are no elevators, and there are no plans to add ADA access because the house is on the National Registry of Historic Places). Awesome view of Waikīkī at sunrise and golden hour. Being 6'1" the bathroom can be awkward with its placement under a steep-sloped gable, requiring me to stand a little closer to the shower head and sink. The house has that smell like grandma's house, but it's expected with any wooden building this old. Top-notch antiques decorate every corner in a tasteful way. The saltwater pool is an added comfort, and the breakfasts made to order by Tomomi and her daughter is plain ol' good homecooking. Owner Scott Glen put a lot of money, time, and sweat into making this place wonderful. The five ducks, cat, and miniature pinscher are fun housemates!

I was lucky to have the inn pretty much to myself. I was afraid that it would be haunted but I felt a welcoming atmosphere throughout my stay. I took the John Guild Suite. I felt sad to learn John Guild had embezzled money from the Dillingham company to build this house. He was caught and had to turn the home over to the Dillinghams -- had a quiet evening after having an Italian dinner at a nearby restaurant. Was very quiet and I slept very well. The family that took over the inn was very pleasant and created a terrific breakfast in the morning. I will be returning when I can. You would need to climb stairs if u want the John Guild or Dillingham suites. I did see a clown loach in the aquarium. Haven't seen one in ages and remembered that in the wild they can grow very large. Checking out was done smoothly and felt refreshed to begin the work week again

Pros: - Incredible oceanfront view on a private beach! - Super affordable - Comfy - Lots of activities and games available to rent on base. Cons: - Seriously so many bugs INSIDE the cabin. See below for more details. - Called cleaning services and it took them 2 days to come clean the cabin... we stayed for 6 days. One of the first things we noticed when we arrived was that there were ants along every baseboard. We went for a sunset walk and came back to find the cabin filled with 50-60 long winged flies. We killed them all and then went to dinner. We came back and the ants were eating all the dead bodies of the flies. While it was unpleasant having so many ants in the house, they ended up serving as nature's clean up crew. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The cabin was filled with spiders, which we don't usually mind, that's kinda normal for a cabin, but when a few roaches & beetles came out at night, that's what did me in. After playing hard all day exploring the island, all we wanted to do was shower, relax on the couch, and get a good night of sleep. However, that never happened. I never felt clean in the snow globe of bugs and had to make sure my suitcase was zipped every second it wasn't open. Hopefully it was just my cabin that had this issue... In the future, I think it would be helpful to invest in some screens, seal the holes in the windows, spray for bugs, and maybe set some traps. :)

Waikiki beach is about three blocks away. I started referring to the hotel as "home". it was easy to find the hotel while walking around as it has the pink trim. This came in handy for me one time. The room is more than double the size of similar ones in other hotels. The three of us could spread out and not feel cramped. Ask for beach towels at the front desk. There was a laundry basket in the closet although we didn't use the washer and dryer on the third floor. Also, two folding "tables" for carry-ons, and a safe. It was thoughtful to see unique, small touches. For example, in the bathroom, the glasses were not only covered in plastic, they were inverted and tied in a knot. . I've never see this in 60 years at many hotels. I noticed. We used the large-sized fridge and microwave. If you'd like to cook, there's an electric stove top, pots, pans, dish towels, new kitchen sponge and new mini dish soap. Thank you, Ilima Hotel!!
