We had the large boat that consisted of numerous Filipino dishes and all were delicious. My wife is from the Philippines and she said the taste and consistency was just like her country. I've been to Manila several times, all with adequate service and food...nothing to write home about. Before I tear this place apart, I will say the ambiance and atmosphere is warm and inviting, and I love the idea of a la carte appetizers. The skewers are awesome and so are the bloody Marys. With that said... I was craving sushi on New Years Eve, and decided my boyfriend and sister would take the short drive from fond du lac to Oshkosh. Before leaving, I called the restaurant to ensure they would still be open. The conversation went something like this: Me: Hi! I was wondering what your hours were tonight. We are coming from out of town, so I wanted to be sure you would be open. Hostess: Oh....ummmm...yea lemme check. I'm not sure. (Turns head away from the phone) Hey!! What time are we open until tonight???? (Comes back to the phone to let me know) Well, our last reservation is, like, 9:30, so probably we'll close at like, 10:30 or something. Me: Ok! Do I need a reservation? Hostess: Nope! See ya soon. Once we arrive, we are ignored by one of the hostesses, who finally asks..."Do you have a reservation???" I understand they were busy. This place is usually not slammed, but I watched several other tables get served or greeted before us. The host finally came over to see if our server had been to the table, and once she realized she hadn't, got someone over to us right away. Like I said before, the appetizers and bloody Mary's are good. I go ahead and order several for our table to share, along with a Bloody Mary. The waitress informs us she is sorry, but they are out of beef for the skewers, as well as the tuna for the tuna tartar. I get curious, and ask what else they are out of, and come to find out they are out of salmon as well. After a brief discussion, we all decide we will head to Nakashima, a sushi restaurant who does not run out of fish to serve. Too bad, I hope Manila can improve. read more

Loved it here! I ordered the ginaatang kalbasa (?) and it was delicious as well as my friend ordered then crispy pata and omg it was also delicious! Will be coming here again. Our waiter was friendly and checked on us multiple times. There were only two other customers that were in there. We got there at 2 and they were closing at 2:30 til 4 for dinner but they didn't mind but also did tell us the kitchen is closing, which was nice of them to do as well! We got the halo halo as a desert as well. It was okay, I wouldn't order it again just because it was kind of too sweet for me. It's $5 and it's huge! Hands down the best food in Oshkosh! Most locals I've talked to, speak only in regards to their sushi. The other food on the menu is what there is to rave about. The uniquely satisfying options of cultural diverse food is what makes this place amazing. I wish more people would give this place a try!!! The food has high quality and completely worth the price. The flavors are mind blowing. I highly suggest the vegetarian roll, the skewers, Robata entrees and if you actually want really crab meat - the crab Rangoons. Let's start with the good stuff. Service was excellent, and not just compared to Memphis (from where I recently moved) -- I mean actually good. Our waitress was friendly without being pushy, kept the water glasses full, and promptly brought us everything we asked for. All of our sushi was very tasty, with no hint of fishiness, and only one piece of sashimi had the telltale signs of having been frozen. Have I had better sushi? Sure, in California. But given the geography, I don't think you can do any better. I was certainly glad we didn't drive 20 miles to Appleton for something similar! Also, the restaurant itself is beautiful, but still accessible for folks who didn't take the time to get all gussied up (cough, me, cough...). The less good stuff: the crab rangoon was very under seasoned. Guess what folks, if you don't season your wonton wrappers before you fry them, it tastes like, well, nothing. Crunchy. Fried. That's it. The filling seemed to have a decent amount of crab, but lacked the wonderful creaminess that I associate with this dish. Overall, a disappointment. The salmon tartare appetizer was similarly bland, and several of the diced pieces had not been fully severed from each other. Come on, guys! Finally, the chocolate volcano cake (a favorite dish of the boyfriend's) was a bit crunchy and crumbly on the outside, and far too oozy on the inside. Having made these myself, I know it's a tricky thing to get right, but surely they've had time to practice. The live jazz that started up while we were there (just piano and bass) didn't do much for me, but was fortunately subdued enough that we could still carry on a conversation without shouting across the table. Though the hostesses could use a lesson in not seating folks right next to the musicians -- at least one couple asked to move. Given the above, I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars...and then it occurred to me, while waiting for dessert, that, despite having been told that our $25 sashimi assortment came with both soup and salad, and having been specifically asked what type of soup and salad we preferred, both items had, well, not arrived. When I pleasantly asked our server if they had gotten lost, she apologized, said she guessed so, and offered to have them boxed for us to take home. Um, no. While a little miso soup and seaweed salad are nice in the course of a sushi dinner, I have no earthly idea what I'd do with them at home, other than let them sit in the fridge for a week before throwing them out. I don't know who messed up -- the kitchen, the server, the ticket printer -- but given that the restaurant was maybe half full on a Friday night, I don't have much patience for it. While the boyfriend and I felt that a comped dessert was perhaps in order (a whopping $5.50), we certainly weren't going to ask for it. Let's just say, next time I'll be paying much closer attention to exactly what we order and when it arrives. read more

These guys got everything right. We went in with tepid expectations, but the service, the food, the ambiance, and the prices were all spot on. I went with my daughter who has some dietary restrictions, and it was no problem at all. As we were seated, both the hostess and the waitress confirmed if and what restrictions anyone at the table might have. They brought out a supplement to the menu that showed all of the items with allergens and ones that could be edited to order. Even after we ordered, the chef had a question specific to one of her food allergies, so the waitress came out to clarify a couple of specific ingredients. The food itself was fantastic. I got the bihan and she got some mushroom soup and the squash curry (made vegan and gluten free). The portions were huge; neither of us could finish our dinner. (And the leftovers kept wonderfully- easy lunch the next day) Even though we got there 25 minutes before close, during EAA week, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, and in no way rushed is out the door. Maybe the best food I've found in Oshkosh. I travel to Oshkosh for work nearly every week and have a constant struggle to find decent places to eat while in town. Frequently I end up staying in Appleton just just to have a better selection. I recently was recommended Manila Resto by a couple coworkers and a few of us went for lunch and I must say I have been impressed all three times i have been. The initial lunch I ate off the sushi menu and was surprised by the quality and how good everything tasted. We ordered Lumpia for the table and it was very good as well. I have since tried the Chicken Adobo, all of the skewers (the Filipino pork is the best) and Tuna Robata and have been very good. If you are looking for some excellent Pan Asian/Filipino food in Oshkosh this is your place. I look forward to returning soon myself. read more

I completely forgot to fill out the survey after dinner, but I LOVED Manila. It was my first time here, and I was pleasantly surprised. The only bump in the road was that my order had accidentally not been put in with the kitchen along with my group's, but my server was apologetic over it and it did not take long at all for my meal to arrive. I honestly would not have even noticed, but I enjoyed that they went out of their way to inform me of the situation and handled it appropriately. An additional thanks to Tyler V, our server, as he was incredibly friendly, outgoing, and such a joy to have here. He was an added bonus on an already wonderful experience. First impression...ambiance is nice and clean. There was one table with 4 people and the bartender took about 3 to 4 minutes to seat us because he was talking to what appeared to be another employee. It was sort of awkward waiting in front of the table of people while the staff just kept talking to each other. I wasnt sure if we should seat ourselves or what! So there was a half off appetizer special because it was monday. We asked about the half off appetizers and were told it was for people seated at the bar only. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant but they said we had to move to the bar to get the special and we couldnt stay at the table. We contemplated getting our beer and apps at the bar and closing out our tab and then being reseated at the table but we didnt because again, it felt very awkward and we felt it wouldve made a spectacle. So we paid full price and instead got no drinks. Appetizers were ok, the sisig was pretty good but the crab rangoons were mediocre. The sauce is more of a balsamic vinegar sauce than the traditional dipping sauce. We ordered sushi, very few rolls have pieces of fish. They are mostly crab and eel. The rolls are very americanized. One major putoff was the chopsticks. When they came out with the soy sauce before our rolls came, i noticed my chopsticks were wet. It looked like they were used and washed. I asked my husband to look at his and his were also wet and appeared to be used. I dont know if they were, but it was suggestive enough that we used forks to eat our sushi. The sushi would have been ok but for some reason we kept ending up with a wad of seaweed in our mouth as if the seaweed wraps were stale and thick and kept separating from the roll. We lived on the west coast for many years and have had many good and bad sushi rolls and never had the seaweed separate like this. Weird... Our waitress was extremely pleasant and took good care of us. We wished she would have made an attempt at accomodating us and giving us the half off apps. But other than that, she was super on it and knowledgeable of the menu. read more

Stopped here for lunch with my wife and we had a wonderful meal. We both had lumpia; me the meat lumpia and my wife, the pork and shrimp one. Then for entrees I had the Chicken Curry with the Java rice (cooked with turmeric and something else) and she had the Lechon Kawali (crispy pork belly). The lumpia (Filipino eggrolls) were good, but small for what we paid. For what we paid I would have expected either 1 larger one or 2 of the size they served. Both our entrees were excellent though. My curry was well flavored, but not overpowering. It could have used just a heat more chili heat, but it was really good. The Lechon was excellent with the outside being really crispy (and just the slightest bit too tough) and the meat was fall apart tender. The flavor was awesome also. Lunch entrees were very reasonably priced, I thought. I did take a look at the dinner menu and can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes. While, I personally, didn't find the prices too high, some people in the area, might think it is a little expensive. That's because they are used to cheap Chinese buffets and not upscale Asian places. I know they are aren't the same, but many people up, in this area, will make that comparison. read more

Well, after having experienced Filipino dining myself only recently while in Manila, I was eager to try Manila Resto. The lumpia (appetizer) was rather disappointing as compared to the amazing fried spring rolls of the same name that I so enjoyed in PI. While the dipping sauce was good, the rolls themselves bore no resemblance to what I experienced in Manila. Now onto the crispy pata (which was a ubiquitous part of dinner I had in my two weeks there). This version was significantly less aggressively seasoned as nearly all versions I enjoyed there. However, I was told that nearly no two restaurants, nor families, prepare crispy pata identically. Also, a local establishment in Oshkosh does not have the ability to alienate locals with food that falls too far outside the diners' comfort zone. Texturally, it was spot on and was served stripped from the bone, which was a nice touch. Over all, a very successful version of an iconic Filipino dish. Service by Rachele was prompt, courteous, and engaging. I'm hoping to have some Kare Kare my next time, as I think that is what she told me I could do if I called ahead. It's nice to find a place willing to cater to patrons wishes within reason. read more

As a native of the Philippines, I've had better Sisig before, but they definitely do their due diligence here to get close to it. Their Sisig was definitely crispy, which is the number one quality you need to look for. It also came with a little bit of sauce, which added a nice mixture of textures into your meal. The only thing I wished was that it was served on a sizzling plate so that the crisp could be maintained throughout your meal, the egg cooked further, and for that added aesthetic! It was my first time here with my family and we ordered a variety of dishes starting with calamari and crab Rangoon's. These were acceptable but not great by any means. Then we were brought out entree's and they were pretty atrocious the two chicken robatas were extremely dry nearing burnt. Didn't help that our server would make mistakes like forgetting our sauces and getting us the wrong kind of rice and by the time it was brought the food was cold. It doesn't help the restaurants cause when they serve less than mediocre food and charge above great prices. In conclusion I don't I'll be back. The only left to wonder is what their sushi selection might have been like. read more

Came here on a dinner date, I didn't realize what kind of place this was and felt under dressed. It looks very classy and there was even a live pianist! We order the sashimi boat. It was pretty impressive and they gave us extra octopus upon request . It came with choice of soups and salads. I picked the seaweed salad and loved it! I would go back just for the seaweed salad. My date and did not enjoy the complimentary shrimp puffs! They made a better center piece than an appetizer. It was like chewing a packing peanut! Manila catered the food for our wedding at tThe Algoma Club upstairs, and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! My husband and I are both obsessed with Asian cuisine and wanted to work that into our wedding meal somehow. We were nervous about going "outside of the box" with filipino food since many of our guests aren't as wild about international cuisine as we are. We ended up ordering the pancit canton with beef as well as the chicken katsu as our main entrees. All we've heard is rave reviews! The groom even requested a special sushi boat as his meal, and the kitchen went above and beyond - it was both delicious and beautiful. Visiting town for the night and walking into Manila Resto on a Saturday night I was not sure what to expect. My dining partner and I walked in without reservation on a Saturday around 6:30pm and were surprised to find only a handful of other tables present. We were seated promptly at our choice of table and the experience was off to a good start. We ordered drinks and started with the Calamari (which was one of the highlights of the night) and the Spring Rolls (the start of many lows). The calamari was well cooked and seasoned, but the spring rolls were overly dense, oddly flavored and not tasteful. We also had the dumpling soup which was moderately tasteful. It wasn't until our entrees arrives that the severe feeling of disappointment set in - not to mention the 30 minute wait for our food. My sea bass special was ice cold in the middle even after asking to have it be prepared "medium". My dining partner's duck was so severely over cooked it both looked and tasted like jerky. After only taking one bite each and deciding the food was inedible we called a server over to attend to our concerns. The cherry on top of the evening was the guest services coordinator only offered a free desert or a 10% off coupon for a future visit. When we declined and received our bill, we were shocked to see they only offered to discount our entrees be 50% though we only took one bite. After addressing our concerns again with the management they apologized and explained they spoke with the head chef and followed their suggestion regarding the discount. Eventually, our entrees were fully comped and we paid for the rest of our items. Proceed with caution. read more

This is a hidden gem in the middle of Oshkosh. Service was great and everything on the menu, from the special sangria through appetizers, entrees and dessert, was delicious. I'd highly recommend the tuna tartare -- it's an intense experience and should be shared among two or more people. We tried crispy pata, kalderetta and a vegetarian entree with squash in coconut milk. Everything was delicious; the entrees are large and it seems like the optimal way to eat here would be to order different things and share them around the table. The desserts are unusual. There's flan, which you might expect, but there are several items that I'd never even heard of before that were fun to try. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, too, and the chairs are very comfortable for a long chatty dinner. A+ all around. read more

Oshkosh- you're lucky! This place is really good! My husband and I had the sushi for two platter, which was chef's choice. Although they went with the 'safe' choices- ie tuna sashimi, california roll- it was excellent, well made sushi. Next time we want to try the eel (it's a delicious creature that's a bit sweet- try it!). They had a nice list of sake as well. The decor is really hip, but inviting. A group of 10 of us visited today for lunch. It was my first time, and everyone assured me the food was great. I had the tuna maki, and Adobo, which comes with my choice of soup. I ordered the specialty soup, but they did not have it ready (an hour into us being there). Lunch was 2.5 hours, and we sat there for so long, that we started to get hungry to visit other restaurants. The food is made to order, and that is great, but that also means it takes a long time, and you get inconsistencies. The mushroom soup was better the last time, from what I was told. This time it had a ramen noodle broth flavor. The Adobo, pork and rice, was good, but as someone else mentioned, it would be something I could make at home. My fiancé and I always have an amazing time! It's our go to restaurant in Oshkosh. We love going and hearing all the live music they offer. It's always so fun! I'll start with the positives, the vibe and atmosphere is very hip and clean. Love all the maps posted on the walls. The wait staff was friendly. Now.. the food. Absolutely nothing like I expected. Being half Filipina I was hoping to have my comfort food fulfilled into a new home away from home. I was wrong. Growing up with traditional Filipino food has really spoiled me. The sinigang soup wasn't sour enough, and didn't have a strong tamarind base. The lumpia was the closest thing to traditional but was super pricey for a small amount. They felt "healthier" by not being deep fried to the point where they're brown and crispy on the edges, and didn't come with enough dipping sauce. The pancit noodles were way off. Using the rice noodles made it close but that's about it. I just was dissapointed, making this a trendy expensive restaurant and white washing the traditional food for the midwest. Appetizers started off strong, but between taking 15 minutes to get a second drink, and 30 minutes to get the entree, there were red flags all around. We had 3 separate servers throughout the night, none really attending to our needs. We ordered the sea bass and duck, both cooked medium. The duck came out as jerky, and the sea bass came out with a center that would make Elsa feel like she was in the middle of the ice age. I really enjoyed my dinner here at Manila. This was my first experience with sushi so I won't comment on that except to say the waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable on the different options. The atmosphere was very nice. There was a small jazz group that played while we ate and gave a nice liveliness to the room. I ate the chicken adobo and my sister had the crispy pata. Because I have enjoyed some authentic adobo in the past I would consider myself well versed with many Filipino foods. The adobo was cooked very well. The meat was tender and came off the bone very easily. The pata was well cooked and the side dipping sauces complimented it nicely. As far as police goes, they seemed to fit the restaurant well. It wasn't by any means cheap. We spent over $60 with the tip and didn't eat dessert. I would recommend Manila to anyone who has a taste for Asian food. Great customer service and a great atmosphere. Not an every day place just cause it's not in my budget, however I will definitely return to enjoy some more delicious food. read more
