A quaint, well groomed Maltese named Delila has strayed from the pack. Although in no immediate danger, Delila has caught the eye of a rambunctious young Boxer named Baxter. Baxter has been subject of controversial ramblings withing the dog run community, mostly from owners of small dogs, who feel that his status as an un-neutered, large dog poses a threat to their pooches. In the blink of an eye, Baxter takes off and slides in behind a startled Delila. Like a true pro, Baxter dislodges his lipstick from its case, mounts Delila, and launches into a series of rhythmic hip thrusts. The petite Maltese lets a little yelp, which loosely translates to : "Make this happen, Big Daddy, make this happen!" This impromptu episode of canine copulation alarms some nearby dog parents, who immediately spring into action, prying the mischievous mutts apart. It fact, "It was used by the Continental Army in 1776 as a lookout point, which at that time offered strategic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New York harbor, a portion of New Jersey, Staten Island, and Long Island"[1]. Mount Prospect Park has something to offer for everyone: - If you have a dog, this is a dog-friendly park, with many dogs enjoying the large grassy area at the center. Keep in mind that the area is completely open. There are specific off-leash hours, and I found all dog owners who come to the park to be friendly and respectful. - If you like to run, there is a running route that goes all around the park, mainly shaded by wonderful tree, that covers 0.22 miles/0.36 km[2]. There are also some stairs that lead to the highest point in the park, that are also good for exercising. Another set of (steeper) stairs is near the second access point near the Brooklyn Public Library. - If you have young kids, there is a playground with two jungle gyms separated by a sprinklers area, plus an enclosed area with swings, and six concrete small tables with benches. There are a lot of mosquitoes, particularly tiger mosquitoes i.e. the ones that are active during the day, in the area near the benches around the fence. The main entrance by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has no stairs, and its gentle incline is perfect if you have a stroller or bike. - If you have older kids, I have seen soccer games and other team sports (baseball, freesbee, etc...) or training sessions take place in the lawn at the center of the park. Keep in mind that the area is not completely covered in grass, and it can get dusty. The park seems to be generally understaffed (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The trash cans are not emptied daily, and the hours at which sprinklers are on during the summer, or when restrooms are open, seem to be totally random. While I find the dog owners and runners very respectful, some of the people who have birthday parties or other celebrations here tend to leave a lot of trash behind. The current was rushing with the winds direction and even the gulls could not compensate to pick out the hunks of Italian bread we frisbee-ed in, Lord how they tried. Two distinguishing tall gated areas - being under 30 pounds and to the left, the over 30 pounded which is a wide range but the park didn't set up for excessive headlong running, so high impact mid park collisions seemed to not be likely. The cutest senior Beagle approached me as I let Phil go and greet which he wanted no part of and it wasn't registering as to why. My further entry in was all on hold, the Beagles eyes never left mine as I lovingly stroked him. But Phil was having issues with two puffed out electrified cotton balls with paws that yipped and yapped in his mug without letting up. His owner was engaged in chit chat, not realizie that his dogs are about to get turned and twisted inside out any moment. In point of fact, just about no dog owners were looking at anything but themselves, so it was about to pop, I could feel it, Phil liked nothing about this park, so we went for the exit. The release knob allows for easy access in, horrible access out and my 6'2 long armed frame struggled to get the release knob pulled because it's on the entrance side. Of course the guy with the puff balls from hell comes right up to the gate in an attempt to leave at the same moment! Clearly a covid dog owner - no sense of potential problems no concept of other peoples dogs and there are just so many of you out there now. And after I managed to get the hell away from there, I spun around to see the sweetest thing, the senior beagle followed me out of the two gates and into the parking lot. His owner was very sweet and collected that love dog. Gosh, that little fellow really made my day and I'll reflect upon him often, but the park -- and the owners -- I'll prefer to forget.
