Winter time is also very fun for the doggies!

Not a dog run but a very big open area, "long meadow," for dogs to chase each other in during off leash hours (before 9am). Even has a "beach" for the dogs. They fence off a part of a lake for dogs to swim in during the summer. My dog has never jumped in yet. I'm too chicken and so is she! But all the other dogs that go, love it. The owners throw a ball in and the dog runs and swims to fetch it! It's just cool to watch the dogs in action here! It's a real park that's well maintained. Dog never gets that dirty here. Always lots of dogs to play with in the mornings, especially weekends. Walk in from any of the park's entrances, pass the bike/runners path, until you get to a big open grassy area with many dogs running around. It's my dog's favorite place to be. Fun for adults also!

When I am out of the city and people ask how I have a dog, prospect park dog run is how I answer. My dog, Opie, has grown up here, been socialized here, and more. If for some insane reason you have a dog that plays well with others but you haven't been here , Ya Gotta come during their off leash hours.

Just moved to UES last month so we can no longer go here.... this is a huge bummer because its doggy heaven. This dog run is really amazing, the field is GIANT and sheltered from the Driveway/Biker Loop by trees and the lake. It features a giant Doggy Beach (snuggled up against the Lake) where your pup can go for a nice long swim. (This is not the "Long meadow" tiny stagnant girardia infested beach I'm talking about). There are tons of really nice local dog owners here every day, and I've never seen any drama go down with a dog that is not socialized. Off-Leash hours are Dawn to 9am you can also go off-leash in the evenings too. Definitely check this place out if you live anywhere near prospect park south!

Nested between the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Central Library, Mount Prospect Park is…read morethe second highest point in Brooklyn after Battle Hill inside the Green-Wood Cemetery. It fact, "It was used by the Continental Army in 1776 as a lookout point, which at that time offered strategic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New York harbor, a portion of New Jersey, Staten Island, and Long Island"[1]. Mount Prospect Park has something to offer for everyone: - If you have a dog, this is a dog-friendly park, with many dogs enjoying the large grassy area at the center. Keep in mind that the area is completely open. There are specific off-leash hours, and I found all dog owners who come to the park to be friendly and respectful. - If you like to run, there is a running route that goes all around the park, mainly shaded by wonderful tree, that covers 0.22 miles/0.36 km[2]. There are also some stairs that lead to the highest point in the park, that are also good for exercising. Another set of (steeper) stairs is near the second access point near the Brooklyn Public Library. - If you have young kids, there is a playground with two jungle gyms separated by a sprinklers area, plus an enclosed area with swings, and six concrete small tables with benches. There are a lot of mosquitoes, particularly tiger mosquitoes i.e. the ones that are active during the day, in the area near the benches around the fence. The main entrance by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has no stairs, and its gentle incline is perfect if you have a stroller or bike. - If you have older kids, I have seen soccer games and other team sports (baseball, freesbee, etc...) or training sessions take place in the lawn at the center of the park. Keep in mind that the area is not completely covered in grass, and it can get dusty. The park seems to be generally understaffed (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The trash cans are not emptied daily, and the hours at which sprinklers are on during the summer, or when restrooms are open, seem to be totally random. While I find the dog owners and runners very respectful, some of the people who have birthday parties or other celebrations here tend to leave a lot of trash behind. Which is a shame, as this park is generally quiet, much less busy than nearby Prospect Park, and generally a great place to just relax and unwind. ----------------------- [1] https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/mount-prospect-park/history [2] https://www.plotaroute.com/route/723847

Pros: -I went on a rather chilly day where there weren't many dogs so I'm not sure if it's like this all the time, but the area was nice and clean (no dug up holes or scattered leaves). It also helps that the location is by the highway so there's not a lot of foot traffic. -The people who frequent the area are really friendly and they supervise their dogs. When I went, there were only two other dogs but they were well mannered and the owners stopped them if the play got too rough. -Decent amount of shade if you visit in the summer Cons: -Dirty water bowls were there, but no access to a hose or fountain to clean them or provide dogs with water. Bring your own, especially if you go during the summer. -Only one picnic table. If you're the type to sit and watch, this may not be the place for you. It shouldn't matter though..as long as the pup has fun, right? -No separate section for small dogs -Nothing for dogs to engage with (unless you count tree stumps). Bring a toy just incase there's no one there or if your dog is fine with just exploring and sniffing around then you should be good!
