Fairly disappointed by this place. The crab linguine was just okay. The whole menu is so expensive, and as much as I wanted to order $70 halibut...I'm glad I didn't because even my $32 crab linguine was only okay. My partner got the Diablo Shrimp and said he'd give it 3.5 stars. The service was okay. Nothing near what I want to see from a place with prices like this. I'm glad I tried it while I was in town, but I won't be back here. If you want Italian seafood, give it a try, but I'll pass in the future. There are many better places to dine. read more

Excellent halibut and creamy polenta. We stopped in after a local whale watching tour while exploring downtown Sitka. The gluten free options were fairly limited, but the server was aware of gluten and what I could have. The fish was fresh, cooked and seasoned perfectly. Up until this year I'd give this eatery a 4 - decent food, good service. Expensive, as is everything in Sitka. This year they've hit it out of the park with a few menu additions. Highly recommended are the mussels - the spicy sauce and accompanying grilled bread are fabulous; the Beast burger made with Wagyu, elk, and bison with a gorgonzola spread (the fries are even excellent); and the deep-fried doughnut with ice cream is an occasional indulgence completely worth the damage, easily shared. The cocktails are made with care and our service has been excellent and attentive. Since prices will be high here no matter where you go, if you're downtown, stop in here. read more

I've eaten here twice. It's an upscale restaurant located in the Sitka Hotel. Kinda pricey but the food and location and ambiance and service all reflect that too so you're getting what you pay for imo. Got the King crab legs once and we split two orders between three adults and it was plenty. I've also grabbed a beer at their bar a couple times while walking around. I'm not a pasta fan, so seldom go to Italian restaurants. But after several people recommended this restaurant, we decided to give it a try. We were blown away with how great it was. The special of the night was Parmesan encrusted halibut with risotto and roasted vegetables. It was amazing! The tiramisu was very good also as was the service. I'm posting this review not because it was the most amazing Italian food I've ever had, but because among the Sitka restaurants I dined at over a 3-day stay, it was a top dining experience. I think this restaurant is much better than its current average score. The food, drinks, and service were all very good. I had the meatball appetizer with polenta as an entree. We stopped here while in port on the Crown Princess. We came is shortly after they opened and had no problem getting seated. They are located in a good place, surrounded by the shops in town, so it was a perfect stop and we were hungry. My daughter and I both ordered the Lemon Lobster Linguine, my husband ordered the Mangiare Meatballs and my youngest ordered the kids buttered pasta (perfect for the picky eaters). All the food was generous servings and good! We haven't had the chance to try a lot of places in Sitka, but this is one that we did really enjoy and would recommend if you enjoy pasta! It was chilly outside and the main door was open, so we did get hit with cold air once in a while, but handled it well. The food and service were very good. Environment was noisy and friendly. We had six in our group and not a complaint to hear. The pork chop was the biggest hit. The comments were incredibly juicy with big flavor and cooked perfectly. My husband had the white salmon and it was well seasoned, cooked well and while he enjoyed every bite really wanted the pork chop. The mashed potatoes it was served in were ok, just an odd combo to me. I had the rock fish piccata. It was just the right amount of lemon and capers. Nice tangy, briny flavor. A pile of pasta which was cooked just right. The price is a little expensive kind of like everything in Sitka. read more

Customer service was below par. Lots of employees doing the same thing and not enough people attending to customers. 4 Servers to one person to take orders and pay. Fish and chips was overpriced for top of the line frozen halibut then deep fried. Not to the standard that you would expect when paying $38 a plate. Limited seating and felt cramped. Drinks were a bit pricey at $5 for a 12 ounce cup of soda, not once asked for a refill. Waited so long to pay our bill, we got up and went to server to pay just to get out of there. read more

My husband and I decided to stop in since the sign out front listed halibut under the Specials. There was a wait but the hostess was a rockstar and got us in quickly. We were seated in the bar area and the bartender came to our table to take our drink order (a beer, a cocktail, and a soda). Someone else delivered the alcoholic beverages but no soda so we had to ask another server to bring it. No one came to take our food order until we flagged down the hostess. The bartender came back to take it and we asked about the price. On the menu, halibut is listed under "Specialties" which is not the same as "Specials" but we were told the price was what was listed on the menu. Perhaps the sign should reflect the difference since these words are not interchangeable, especially in a restaurant setting. A server brought our food and then we didn't see anyone again until the bartender brought the check. All of a sudden he was Mr. Personality - presumably because he wanted a tip. I hope he enjoyed the dollar we left since my husband didn't want to leave anything. I am giving two stars since the hostess was very nice and helpful. She seemed to be working the hardest out of anyone there and was also the friendliest. Very disappointing since Sitka was the place I was most excited to see. When you are at a port for a limited time, it is very frustrating to get such poor service and to pay so much on top of it. The place itself was nice enough but pretty packed so there were people standing right by our table with their backs to us. Rather uncomfortable and a bit awkward. As for the halibut, it was okay - reminded me of frozen fish that one could make at home. Definitely not worth the price we paid. We had some that was much better in a different port. My cocktail was terrible and I could barely drink it. And trust me, I've had people make it pretty badly many times. I recommend trying pretty much anywhere else. read more

First time in Sitka. Average restaurants in town are pricey and Mangiare shares this trait as well. But, the quality and portions here make it worth a look. I ordered the Alaskan King crab and at $75, the 1lb of legs were worth it in comparison to other venues and street vendors around town (especially when the cruise ships are in port). Service was very good and Ed, the bartender, was the best. Lots of fishing advice and good conversation. First of all the hours are wrong on Yelp. It says it was closed but they're open. They're very open. So open and loud and crowded. BUT!!! Staff is fabulously friendly. Wow. Everyone went out of our way to wait on us. In fact I'm not even sure who our server is. There were so many people at our table getting us extras overheard me saying oh we need another tartar sauce and somebody else grabbed it for me. This restaurant in the Sitka Hotel assumes a mixed image of upscale and rustic/casual. Italian music plays while waiters in T-shirts serve tables with faux tree-bark on tables and chairs. The rockfish picatta is outstanding. The vegetables were cooked just enough to bring out their flavor. Excellent food. Unfortunately, like most restaurants in this area, the tea selection tops out at Twinings. Would come back. P. S. OMG the lemon olive oil cake. I have to stop eating this! read more

Both were salmon based: one was a salmon and pasta alfredo, the other had larger chunks of salmon (I don't see either on today's menu). This was me and my family's first stop in Alaska. We were searching for them Alaskan king crab. We sat on a bench outside and saw that this place offered that so we went in. The hostess was the most unpleasant experience at this establishment. You'd imagine a hostess' job is to be a good host but nope. This girl was bouncing all over the place trying to help her peers but clearly she was in their way. So, why not just stay at the hostess stand and greet people and update people on when they'd get seated. Finally, after standing here for 5 minutes, she walked over and acknowledged us. She sat us down and said she'd bring the menus over. She was soooo ditzy and her words are meaningless. We watched her do her thing again, bounced all over the place trying to look busy when she should have kept her words and bring some menus over. Come on, this was our first Alaskan meal experience and we are hungry! So, like any survivors, we took Charles Darwin's survival of the fittest teachings and got the menus ourselves. Yup, self serve. Our waitress came and she was the sweetest person. We didn't know how much king crab we should order given the other dishes we've ordered. She was honest with her recommendation and we respect that. The food was mostly good. But the King crab was not fresh and it wasn't as big as the ones we'd get back home in Boston so that was a bit disappointing. The Yukon potatoes were soooo good! Prob the best potatoes I've ever had in my life! While we were waiting for our bill, I saw that hostess girl running around the restaurant but not doing anything, still trying to look busy. She sat another table down and said the same exact words to them - she'd bring over the menus. Then she went to did everything but that. After maybe 5 minutes, she remembered, and brought it over. -2 stars for the hostess and her lack of professionalism. read more

I have no complaints about my experience here. The server was attentive and friendly, service was nicely timed - even for our large-ish group - and both the appetizers and entrees we got were excellent. In regards to some of the negative reviews, I have heard from frequent patrons that the experience can be hit or miss. Everyone agreed our food and service this time was top-notch. My advice: go in expecting a nice meal but not a phenomenal one and you've got your bases covered. If it's amazing then you're impressed and if it's less-than-amazing you won't feel let down. And if you *do* have one of those less stellar experiences, don't give up on Mangiare - just give them a try another day. read more

We came here when it opened for dinner. after one hour of waiting, we only received drinks and an appetizer (no refills on the drinks). we felt like you were ignored by the server while she visited the other diners often. The food we received was mediocre compared to the price we paid. after an hour and a half, we received a cold steak with 2 sides ($80) with no meat sauce and a small pasta ($45). She also forgot the mac & cheese I ordered for my daughter, which she said she did not hear me order. Warning: The hostess does not know the price of their steaks and seafood, which is apparently based on market price. Take your money elsewhere I write this review from the perspective of a hotel guest who had the misfortune of staying at the Sitka Hotel in a room above the restaurant. They play music so loud at all hours that it makes the walls and window panes of the hotel rooms boom like you're in a disco. They're belligerent when politely approached about the noise, and they anger and alienate people in the hotel who might otherwise have considered patronizing their restaurant. Let me tell you something from many many years of running a successful business. You are going to fail. Word will get around this small town what kind of people you are. So, the best of luck to you. Nearly none of the staff was in compliance with masking guidelines, and although we were seated quickly, we sat there for at least 15 minutes without any acknowledgement from a server, of which several passed our table multiple times. Understanding staffing issues, I am fine with slower service, but it's amazing how just a quick check in like, "Thanks for your patience, I'll be with you as soon as I can" is all that's needed. Sure the prices are higher than a Michelin star NYC place. That's Alaska. The homemade pasta is so good, especially the ravioli with vodka sauce. Veal marsala is good as is lasagne and eggplant rolotini. The bread in the bread basket and the bruschetta are best in town (and out). The herb whipped ricotta and white bean hummus ...we pig out on. Yes, you can make a meal out of apps. The bar is okay (just okay...saw the bartender SHAKE my martini and I yelled at him and their bourbon selection is so-so). As for sides, the brussel sprouts with pancetta and grilled broccolini are nice, as is the risotto...but the show stopper is the dessert... hazelnut cheesecake IF you can get it. Best? The service. This place acts like they WANT YOU. Like Bobby Flay says, "doesn't matter how good the food is, if the service is bad, people won't come back. People will forgive a bad dish, but not bad service". Alaska is KNOWN for bad service. Mangiere has good service AND great food. I come here for big celebrations but I can also come here and sit in the bar and have a drink and a nice appetizer. This was the only restaurant open in town. It was surprisingly disappointing considering how hard it was to get a table. Food is way overpriced. It took forever to get the food and when it came, we got the wrong order. Food was mediocre. I ordered the bolognese (which is hard to go wrong) but it came so heavily salted, I can only have a few bites. Thank goodness for the wrong order of halibut bites or else I would've left hungry.
