Server was super friendly, although it did take quite a while to get his attention sometimes. All the food was much better than I was expecting. I strayed from my usual picks and went with the mushroom sandwich. It was SO GOOD. I usually don't go for vegetarian options, but I'm glad I did. The Mac and cheese was delicious as well--would definitely recommend! The salmon chowder, salmon plate and salmon dip were all solid choices too. The kale salad wasn't my favorite. The candied pecans were a nice part of it though and I still finished it. The hummus plate was more of an open sandwich and my parents really liked that. read more

The food here did not live up to the hype, but was solid. The outside line was cold. Then, because we were a larger part, we had to sit outside. We asked for an inside table, but the server sat another large party instead, leaving us outside with small children. They eventually offered us hot water near the end of our meal, which we readily accepted. I had the salmon chowder. The flavor was good. I think it had dumplings in it. They were so undercooked that I initially thought they were clumps of unmixed roux. After I had around 5, I realized they were supposed yo be dumplings. I felt the texture was off-putting, but I was so cold outside, I ate the hot soup. I ordered the portobello sandwich. It was good, however the Portobello was not warmed all the way through. It was cooked enough to eat and was well-seasoned so I just ate it. I was also too cold to wait for the kitchen to fix it. The chips served with it were good. I was very excited to try this place out after reading some of the reviews and seeing that it was voted #2 top restaurants in Alaska. However upon coming here for lunch, I was deeply disappointed. We arrived here on a Wednesday for lunch and the whole seating was pretty much open at the restaurant. Despite this, my mom and I wanted to sit near the window and asked the server if we could move tables since they wanted to seat us near the bathroom up against a column. Our server was very cold towards us and did not let us move tables even though all the tables were pretty much open. We felt uncomfortable throughout our dining experience due to the server's attitude. She was also reluctant to give me a refill on my iced tea. Their menu is pretty limited and they serve mostly seafood. We ordered the cod sandwich, salad, and halibut ceviche. The ceviche was very mid and not flavorful whatsoever. The salad was also lackluster however the only redeeming element of the salad was the kelp pickle which was cool to try. They have free wifi. read more

The most incredible spot, we came here twice in a row and wanted to visit again for a third dinner, but they were closed for the day. Let me tell you something....... THE YUZU MISO COD!!! WOW! Easily one of the best things I've ever eaten. Cooked to actual perfection, the most delicate and soft flakes, infused with (not overly sweet) glaze. I'm like daydreaming just thinking about it. Every bite. I was floored. Even by the last few bites, I was still so impressed, it might as well have been the first. And that broccolini had phenomenal flavor/texture. Oh, and the savory butter board focaccia has ruined all other bread/butter for me. I fear I'll never be the same. On par with the food, Beak is community-driven, centering people, values, and quality, locally sourced ingredients. It was awesome to see where the main dishes were sourced from, right there on the menu (all Alaskan groups or local Sitka cooperatives!). My gosh, it makes a difference, and each bite is even more special. If you have a moment, I'd really encourage checking out their website and reading through the 'About' section. You'll fall even more head-over-heels in love with this place. Beak is the model for the future we need. Each staff member we interacted with was 10/10 stellar. They were beaming when talking about the owner/chef and how much they loved working there. Beak is gratuity-free (non-tipping), and any place that pays its staff a living wage gets extra points in my book! Any tips go to staff-selected charities/causes in the area. I'll argue with anyone: the pricing is awesome. So dang good, we came back again for lunch before heading to the airport. On the first go around, we had both White and Red King salmon, and both were exceptional. It was our first time for white king salmon for both of us. We split a massaged kale salad, and I have to say I am not the biggest fan of kale, but this "tasted like Christmas". Very enjoyable. As if that were not enough, and it normally would have been, it was also strongly suggested that we get a cup of the creamy house salmon chowder. That one was perfection. I would probably eat her once, if not twice, a week if I lived in Sitka. On the second time around, we brought a friend who also fell in love with the food and vibe. I tried the duck fat & huckleberry dessert. I love duck fat in general, so I expected it to be very good, and it was even better than that. I believe it was a version of Akutaq. We came to this restaurant on June 5th during our Alaskan cruise vacation. We 100% love this place and happened upon it via conversations with locals at a coffee shop. In addition it was reinforced that we should go there by hour shuttle driver and employee at one of the museums. The restaurant itself is extremely inviting. When we got there we were greeted by three individuals each of them very eager to make sure that we were attended to and got a table to have lunch. Hands down everything we had was extremely delicious. You could really taste the freshness of all the salmon that we had. Even the local beers that they had on top were quite nice each of us tried a different local beer that is from Alaska and they were so refreshing and paired very well with the different items we ate. Definitely one of my favorite meals in Alaska. Located in an adorable converted house by the water, we arrived shortly after they opened at 11am and beat the lunch rush. The menu was salmon heavy but that's exactly what we wanted. We ordered the salmon chowder, salmon pita, sesame-soy salmon poke, hummus pita and reindeer hot dog. Everything, and I mean everything, was delicious. The salmon pita was the overall favorite. The salmon is marinated in sesame- soy and seared so there is a nice crisp on one side. I could eat this weekly and be very happy. The reindeer hot dog was also very tasty. If we hadn't been stuffed we would have ordered another. All of the staff were super friendly and we loved the no gratuity model they use as that allows them to pay their staff a consistent living wage. This place really does live up to the hype (James Beard included)! Basically every dish we ordered was perfect, with fresh fished cooked to the perfect level of flakiness. This is the sort of restaurant a fancier foodie might hope for in Alaska as a balance to the omnipresent (though excellent) fish-and-chips. Percebe barnacles were (surprisingly?) tasty given how off-putting they look. Black cod was as oily as it should be and disintegrated with amazing flavor. Rockfish and ling cod retained both firmness and delicacy. Salmon poke was coho, which is unusual to get outside of the east and works well in that sort of subtle dish. Vegetables were also done well, and the duck akutaq was a refreshing conclusion. Hard to fault anything at all, with one complaint: the rice was consistently overcooked and mushy. Portions were on the small side (we ordered an extra entree at the end), but that's to be expected for this style of restaurant. read more

Elevated Michelin level preparation of their Coho Salmon, really exceeded my expectation but reminds me of the fish served at the highest level; brings me to Le Bernadine and French Laundry all over. The salmon is a simplistic salt crust, prepared medium rare, and absolutely the only way to order it as the chef recommends. The flesh falls off the skin, the crust is crisp with sea salt, with a delicate flesh texture, but also you can sense the wild ocean it was caught in. Having fishermen in the family, you always get a sense of the local waters through the algae-ic biome the fish carry. Wow. It's all there. As a James Beard nominee, this all tracks! read more

Well the first thing you notice about Beak is it looks like a cute little house that's been converted into a restaurant. Sitting right next to the harbor under the O'Connell bridge it's a very cute little setting. I was greeted the moment I walked in by some very pleasant staff, and while I was disappointed they didn't serve breakfast, it was around noon anyhow so I was content to try their breakfast menu. The atmosphere inside is a pleasant one, very chill and low key, mismatched furniture and wall decorations add to a more comfortable "at home" vibe. I could do without some of the more political statements being made, regardless of my agreement to their cause, but nevertheless it's their space, and I found the ambience to be comforting. The menu had a few appetizing options but in the end I decided to go with the rockfish tacos, they weren't a whole lot to look at and when they came to the table I was somewhat let down, but with a little mango habanero salsa they provided and some of the wonderful aioli and a squeeze of lime they were VERY good. Do recommend! I was talked into trying some Apple Blueberry crumble for dessert as well, against my better judgement! But it was also delightful, almond flower and granola with a perfect amount of saltiness in the tart was very well complimented by the sweetness and creaminess of the ice cream, which they give plenty of so you can meter your sweetness to your own taste. We absolutely loved this location!! The food and service were both amazing!! The coffee cubed was delicious - frozen coffee ice cube, espresso and cream - I added vanilla syrup. Yum! The rockfish tacos were simple, I would totally pay extra for a bigger piece of fish in the tacos. Speaking of paying extra - if they have their special upgrade of the salmon slab on a cedar plank...meaning king salmon....GET IT!!! We have never had a better, more flavorful, more excellently cooked piece of salmon. In fact, originally we ordered one and shared everything; we then realized one was not enough and we should have each gotten one, so we ordered another. Consistent deliciousness. The salmon chowder was good. But honestly, we can not stop talking about the salmon slab! We ended the meal with an ice cream sandwich - we had gotten it to go because the line was building and we didn't want to hold up a table, we ended up eating it right outside and that too was very good! This place overall was amazing, Very inclusive, with tables of all sizes to accommodate. Some patio seating too. No gratuities accepted, but that didn't change the service we received. Sitka was our first stop on our cruise ship in the inside passage. We walked around the shops to wait for Beak to open, and boy was it worth it! First of all, the service was so warm and welcoming, you feel right at home! I was also incredibly surprised that their latte was one of the best I've had. We started with the smoked king salmon belly, served with a homemade dill cream cheese and toasted focaccia. It was the perfect blend of salty, smoky flavor that you hope to get with smoked salmon.
