Tried Mandarin tonight for the first time. We have only had buffet at Yin Yang (weren't very impressed...very salty), so I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt. This was much better...also better then the available Chinese in Idaho Falls! Given the huge portions, I'm surprised it's not constantly full of students. We got two entrees and some fried rice, and took home enough to feed two adults and two small children again tomorrow! Very fast service, very friendly and nice. If you don't mind going into a food coma and want a meal that will feed you for a few days then this is the place for you. Huge portions, friendly staff, and pretty tasty food. Mandarin chicken and Mongolian chicken are pretty good, but stay away from the Peanut chicken (unless you want chicken with a mystery brown sauce rolled in a pile of massive peanut chunks). Restaurant lacks decoration and is honestly a little boring, but this is my go to Chinese restaurant in Rexburg. My wife and I were informed of this place by one of her friends so we decided to have lunch here. I was surprised by two things when we ate here. 1. Portion Size 2. Price Both of these are great in my opinion. Seven bucks for a huge plate of food that I had to take home with me. My wife's meal was a little over five bucks and she too had to bring home some of her food. Finally, an oriental place that I want to visit again. Wow! I am really impressed by this place, especially for a small town like Rexburg. It is by far the best in town! The place is clean, neat, and has some pretty decorations. The staff is friendly, efficient and helpful. I have been there both on slow and busy nights, and our orders were taken accurately and food brought out quickly every time! They have really good specials, especially for small groups of maybe 3-6. Their food is delicious. They have a wide variety of really amazing flavors, as well as more common things, so you can either have an old favorite or try something new every time! The food is average. Don't expect much more than adequate Chinese food. We got orange chicken and it was good, but a little too sweet. Curry chicken was alright. My wife and I made it a date to visit this Chinese restaurant every Friday when we could. I always ordered the same: sweet & sour chicken. We always ordered extra rice and my wife always ordered the french fries. It was good food; more than we could eat. Decor is typical cookie-cutter Chinese restaurant in East Idaho; kitchen-like w tables & orange booths, a few Chinese pictures on the walls, and overall pretty stark. While the menu was the same exact menu as other Chinese restaurants in the area, pricing was higher. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. I read many of the reviews when I was in Rexburg and based on them I decided to try Mandarin Restaurant. I am sorry I did. I grew up in the Los Angeles area where my parents would take me to LA's Chinatown regularly. I came to love Chinese food. I met one Mandarin's owners and she was very humble and nice. I really feel bad about this review but the truth needs to be told. A few reviews said they are from China and that means they know how to cook Chinese. That's like saying a person from Texas automatically knows BBQ. It's not necessarily so. I ordered the Mongolian Beef and General Tao's Chicken. My other party ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken and cheese crab wantons. The wantons tasted like they were made with Bisquick and were hard and crunchy. They were nowhere near what a wanton should be. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was OK but the sauce tasted like pure honey instead of sweet & sour sauce. The General Tao's Chicken was inedible and I sent it back. The Mongolian Beef had so much thick sauce I thought it was a stew. The flavor was edible but it was not Mongolian Beef. All-in-all I would have been better off ordering at Panda Express down the road because I've had better Chinese at the worst fast take out joints. read more

My husband and I decided to try a new place today for lunch and stumbled into the Mandarin Restaurant. I was craving lemon chicken in particular (thanks to extreme pregnancy cravings). But I am VERY picky about lemon (since it is my favorite flavor)... I took my first bite and nearly died of happiness! That is the best lemon chicken I have ever tried! I also had fried rice and sampled some of my husband's pork and vegetables, all of which was flawlessly prepared and oh so delicious! The food was brought out quickly, but you could tell they didn't rush the dish! The food was (like I said) amazing, and beautifully presented. I am very picky about Chinese food, so I am thrilled to admit that Mandarin Restaurant is a new favorite between my husband and I, and we will DEFINITELY be going back for future dates! The waitress working was very accommodating, sweet, and quick about taking care of our needs. The restaurant itself was very clean, and simply (but nicely) decorated. The prices were appropriate for the taste and portion sizes (I'd average about $9 per plate). This was our go to spot when my wife and I wanted Chinese take out. I don't think we ever ate at the restaurant, but we got take out food several times. The food is good, plentiful, and affordable. I was always a bit disappointed with their fried rice, but I still give this establishment five stars, considering the price you pay. I prefer my fried rice with peas, cubed carrots, and some fried egg. It's been a while, so I can't remember exactly which, but their fried rice is missing at least one of those three ideal ingredients. Other than that neither my wife nor myself have any complaints as far as I know about their food. Neither of us ever got sick from it, that I can remember, and we were always appreciative of the value of their food while we were going to school, and living on a stricter budget. read more
