Decent food and decent prices. Not your typical Chinese ambiance, kind of open and light inside, but overall, I enjoy.

This small town. about three-thousand strong, has an interesting mix of restaurants. My guess is most of the business might come from those traveling between Idaho Falls and either Yellowstone Park or to Montana. One of the restaurants still open at the time I was looking, that wasn't fast food or pizza, was New Star. I rather liked this place, it presented well. The employees were friendly but not intrusive. The menu had all the usual things you'd expect at a Chinese restaurant. Unlike some places the lunch menu was available to order from all day. There was a small upcharge for doing so. This place must do a great takeout business for the locals based on what I saw The food itself was fine. There was nothing to make it stand out, but nothing to ding, either. The sweet-sour pork was okay, it was hot and crispy. There was no color to anything: no peppers, carrots, or anything other than the celery and that colorless sauce. Visually, it was not appealing. Once I got past that, it wasn't bad. It hit the spot but didn't set off any flags -- good or bad. The Christmas ornaments on the ceiling are odd, but probably no odder than the music playing in May -- Jingle Bells on repeat -- until someone must have said something, because it stopped. I'm Extremely disappointed in the food here. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken with rice and an eggroll. The Majority of the chicken was hard and chewy inside. It tasted like old chicken that had been reheated. I mentioned it to the staff and was told maybe the chicken is so hard because it's been fried??? The rice sadly also tasted dry and old. The eggroll was possibly the worst eggroll I've ever had. 90 percent of the eggroll was a wrapper that seemed to be rolled and rolled and rolled with barely any filling in it. The wrapper was so thick and layered that the middle of the eggroll seemed undercooked as well.. Basically, Most of the meal tasted like what it would taste like if I had Chinese leftovers at home and reheated them. read more

THE WORST FOOD, OWNER, SERVER! Sick and tired of getting my orders WRONG. They claim to serve Pork & Chow Mien- its a nasty celery stew type. Owner told me he does not care. Eating at New Star in Rigby, Idaho was a real disappointment. The 'Pea Pod with Beef' I ordered was listed on the menu as also containing mushrooms and bamboo shoots. What came out was an unappetizing plate of celery, some beef, a few mushrooms and pea pods all soaked in a flavorless cornstarch slurry masquerading as sauce. See the pictures- clearly there was more celery than any other ingredient. When I brought this to the attention of the chef, who also seemed to be the owner, he was unapologetic and and actually said that nobody has ever complained about this in his 17 years of running New Star (Gaslight much??) He then said, "What do you want me to do?" I let him know that I was not willing to pay full price for a literal plate of celery and he begrudgingly agreed to take half off the price of my dish. If you're looking for good Chinese food, I'd suggest steering clear of this establishment. Your taste buds will thank you. read more

This place seems to get such mixed reviews, but we eat here about monthly, and it's always been a great experience for us. The food is consistently good and service is always fast. Take out is our preference, but I wouldn't hesitate to dine in, either. read more

Used to be pretty good. Never needed to use the soy sauce before as their spicy chicken tasted good on it's own. Now it's mostly celery. Be sure to ask for extra soy sauce if you order to go, otherwise you won't taste anything. read more

I'm really confused as to how and why people in Rigby love this place. Maybe it's because there isn't any culture here or it's one of the only restaurants here. But, yeah this place is not good. The food has no flavor. It's mostly just vegetables because they don't give you much meat. Their egg rolls are covered in bread. Oh, and don't get me started on the service. There is one guy who has been working there for years and he told my family all about his gut issues... as we were eating! It was the most awkward thing ever. Most local Chinese restaurants have at least one dish they do with excellence. New Star has good lemon chicken and mandarin chicken is good. However, the beef lo mien is truly excellent. The flavor is just dead on what you want with this dish. Then I don't know how but each small piece of beef has a char line on it where it was charred on the grill. This is what I would expect at a good PF Chang's or Cheesecake Factory. I usually get it to go because I can't eat the whole container in one sitting. This time I drove from Idaho Falls just to pick up one to go box of the beef lo mien. It was still super hot with heat when I got back to I.F..There is always a good distribution of meat to noodles and veggies to noodles and beef. I have never wished it had more meat and that is unusual for me I love my beef. read more

Came to visit family in Rigby. Remember having good food here in past. My advice- AVOID eating here! We ordered several items. Pea pod beef was mostly celery, Six pea pods, and teeny tiny amount of beef leaving your dish with no flavor. Beef broccoli was mostly mixed veggies (not just soggy broccoli) and teeny tiny beef. Again absent of flavor. Egg rolls down right GROSS! Only edible portion was mandarin chicken a.k.a. Sweet and sour. Basically unless you want to have a unsatisfying meal don't eat here. read more

This is standard "fast food" Chinese, but they do the genre well. Although not extremely authentic or original, it's still a pretty good Chinese restaurant for the area. I've eaten here several times, and the food has always been fresh and the servings generous. The waitresses are very attentive and quick to refill your drink. They have all the classic local lunch specials here (see below). One of my favorite dishes here is their Spicey Hot Diced Chicken. It's like classic Kung Pow Chicken, but with sliced almonds instead of peanuts. The sauce is robust and packs a punch. If you're really hungry, the Fung Wong Chicken will challenge you--deep fried chicken and ham, served with pineapple and a sweet and sour sauce--a delicious gut-busting meal. If you're familiar with Fong's in Rexburg, they are very similar. Their menus are suspiciously similar (lunch specials 1-5 are identical). Given the limited dining choices in Rigby, this is one of the better options for a sit down lunch or dinner. read more

While I was visiting Rigby I was looking for something other than a typical American chain restaurant. Although the Chinese food here is not authentic and has been alter to suite the American palate, I think the food was delicious. We had to wait a couple minutes for our food, but I'd rather wait and know my food is fresh. Often times when I go to a Chinese restaurant they bring the food after a minute after I order and it isn't fresh. When the plates arrived the food was hot and the portions were large. I didn't finish all of my food, so I took the rest home for later. I ordered the mandarin chicken and it came with a choice of rice or chow mien. I liked that I didn't need to order the rice separately. The service was really good, but it would have to be if you only have four tables during the lunch rush. The food was not good. I got the sweet and sour pork, and the batter was leathery and dry as if it had been sitting out for a while, and they DROWNED it in sweet and sour. When I say "drowned," I mean that they COMPLETELY destroyed my meal with it. It wasn't good. read more

We ordered chicken fried rice, egg rolls, beef and broccoli, and Moo Goo Gai Pan and we were happy with all of the food. We ordered it for take out and it was about 15 minutes to wait on the food. The restaurant was clean and busy, continuous flow of customers the whole time we were there. read more

I'm not sure why, but every single Chinese restaurant in the area does the exact same thing. I will not be eating here again. The food was okay, but not worth the trip. The fried rice is not fried and not good, and the chow mein is just celery and crunchy noodles. Where are the actual noodles? And what's with all the celery?? All in all I left wishing I hadn't gone in the first place, but at least I wasn't worried about food poisoning like I had felt after other Chinese restaurants in the area. read more

Lots of locals have said great things about this place so we decided to finally try it. Not disappointed at all! The service was incredible. There was one kid working the desk who was taking all the to-go orders, seating customers, answering the phone that would not stop ringing, and closing out the tickets.
