Ridiculous amount of celery in the dish.
Christine D.

Eating at New Star in Rigby, Idaho was a real disappointment. The 'Pea Pod with Beef' I ordered was listed on the menu as also containing mushrooms and bamboo shoots. What came out was an unappetizing plate of celery, some beef, a few mushrooms and pea pods all soaked in a flavorless cornstarch slurry masquerading as sauce. See the pictures- clearly there was more celery than any other ingredient. When I brought this to the attention of the chef, who also seemed to be the owner, he was unapologetic and and actually said that nobody has ever complained about this in his 17 years of running New Star (Gaslight much??) He then said, "What do you want me to do?" I let him know that I was not willing to pay full price for a literal plate of celery and he begrudgingly agreed to take half off the price of my dish. If you're looking for good Chinese food, I'd suggest steering clear of this establishment. Your taste buds will thank you.

Okay place to eat. My son had sweet and sour chicken lunch special, and I got the beef kung pow (I think). Might go back with the family some time.

Beef lo mein is with flame grilled beef the flavor is awesome. Plenty of beef and lo mein noodles and veggies. My favorite dish here.

Most local Chinese restaurants have at least one dish they do with excellence. New Star has good lemon chicken and mandarin chicken is good. However, the beef lo mien is truly excellent. The flavor is just dead on what you want with this dish. Then I don't know how but each small piece of beef has a char line on it where it was charred on the grill. This is what I would expect at a good PF Chang's or Cheesecake Factory. I usually get it to go because I can't eat the whole container in one sitting. This time I drove from Idaho Falls just to pick up one to go box of the beef lo mien. It was still super hot with heat when I got back to I.F..There is always a good distribution of meat to noodles and veggies to noodles and beef. I have never wished it had more meat and that is unusual for me I love my beef.

This is standard "fast food" Chinese, but they do the genre well. Although not extremely authentic or original, it's still a pretty good Chinese restaurant for the area. I've eaten here several times, and the food has always been fresh and the servings generous. The waitresses are very attentive and quick to refill your drink. They have all the classic local lunch specials here (see below). One of my favorite dishes here is their Spicey Hot Diced Chicken. It's like classic Kung Pow Chicken, but with sliced almonds instead of peanuts. The sauce is robust and packs a punch. If you're really hungry, the Fung Wong Chicken will challenge you--deep fried chicken and ham, served with pineapple and a sweet and sour sauce--a delicious gut-busting meal. If you're familiar with Fong's in Rexburg, they are very similar. Their menus are suspiciously similar (lunch specials 1-5 are identical). Given the limited dining choices in Rigby, this is one of the better options for a sit down lunch or dinner.

My first visit - my spouse told me I needed to come try out this basically hole-in-the-wall chinese…read morerestaurant. I tend to like authentic chinese, and this place is indeed american chinese, but I thought I'd give it a shot. There were a lot of menu items I avoided - I knew I wouldn't like anything that screamed american chinese, but I found they had hot pots and a few spicy dishes that I might prefer. I said I wanted their spicy beef - extra spicy (the hot pot I wanted to try as was). When asked "1 to 10?", I said definitely 10 - as hot as you'll go. Well, it arrived at what I would call a 2, and barely that. But they were very good at bringing out some chili paste, and that made it a very nice medium spiced dish. Both dishes were very tasty, and I told my spouse I would be quite willing to come again, especially since it is just across a street from out business mailbox.

Same great quality for the 12 years I've been eating here. The egg drop soup is really something…read morespecial. It is super thick and a lot of shredded chicken. The veggie spring rolls are a delicacy. My wife likes the chicken almondine. I love the mandarin chicken with the sauce on the side. The chicken is so light and the crust is so crispy. The wife and husband owners go out of their way to please.

Delicious hot food in the mountains, what else could one ask for?…read more Food: All their food was delicious. Everything we tried was excellent. We tried the egg flower soup, lo mein, fried rice & black pepper chicken. Service: We were seated very quickly since the place was empty when we went in. The service was really fast. In-all: A great option for a nice hot lunch or dinner in a cold place.

Great Szechuan food overall! The spicy dishes ars numbing but not really spicy, which is not really…read morethe case usually, and I can eat this type of 'spicy' food. My favorite is the fish. We ordered bean curd Szechuan style and it turned out to be mapo tofu. We ordered a beef w tomato dish that is under Soup but it is more like a braised beef than soup, but seasoning is okay. Chicken seasoning is good but the dish is too fatty/oily. The rest of the food is great. White rice is overcooked. We came back the 2nd time cuz there wasn't a lot of good Asian places. The walnut shrimp is sweet as expected from the mayo, but the batter from the deep dive is a bit too crunchy-hard. The intestine stir fried w chili is okay but it has some smell; it is also not spicy. Do not order lo mein, it is bland and noodle texture is not good. Highly recommend braised green beans. The special pork belly is a bit too sweet but still good overall. The beef in dry pot is tender but that dish is supposedly spicy but it is not.
