Service is absolutely amazing.. thus the five star. Food was overall 4 stars and portions were generous. Wanted to have jajamyun and Jampong ( not in the menu,,but they have it., it is Korean-chinese food. The noodle was good consistency and flavor was right. Jampong could have been spicier. Also order eggplant tofu in hot pot, now that dish was amazing. Next time I come, we'll try more of the food items on regular menu. I'm in the service, was over the top, there was just so friendly. Also parking is right in front of the restaurant, makes it so much easier while dining in downtown. read more

Just wanted to provide an update. I haven't ordered from Mandarin House in quite some time, but I've been seriously craving Chinese food. I tried to order some new stuff from the menu. - Lemon Chicken: Nothing really stood out. Just lemony and slightly sweet chicken. - Two Eats Flavored In Scallion: MY FAVORITE!!! I love Mongolian Beef and this is similar except it has chicken AND beef!!! - BBQ Pork Bao (staple): Now only include 3 bao instead of 4 ::insert sad face:: - Onion Pancake: STELLAR. I cannot recall if I've ordered the onion pancakes from Mandarin House before. Regardless, this item will for sure become a staple. - House Special Fried Rice: Solid. I was sad to not find the Beef Pancakes on the Postmates menu anymore. Summary: DO NOT sleep on Mandarin House. Solid Chinese food at a good price with ample portions. read more

This restaurant is so incredible I'm glad I finally made it back. It was a lunch spot favourite when I worked in downtown pre-pandemic. After visiting the Lan Su Chinese Garden for Lunar New Year, I told my family one of my favourite restaurants was close by so we walked a few blocks. We ordered Xiao Long Bao, Egg Flower Soup, Sautéed String Beans, Mandarin Chicken (similar to Orange Chicken or General Tao's), and Spicy Cumin Beef. Everything was incredible. My 6 year old raved about be XLB dumplings and wanted to come back soon. We all loved the Egg Flower Soup, String Beans, and Mandarin Chicken. The Mandarin Chicken was one of the best I've had - perfectly crispy, not too sweet and the perfect amount of spice. Perfect for the kids to enjoy. The XLB dumplings had flavourful meat a delicious broth. The Egg Flower soup had some pork (I think ) in it and vegetables, the perfect amount to complement the egg. The String Beans were so good both of my kids ate a lot of them. The Spicy Cumin Beef was amazing albeit too spicy of the kids. This was my mainstay for lunch when I worked in downtown. We came back again less than week later because my kids kept requesting it. We got the same dishes and added the savory (onion I think) pancake this time. Everyone loved it. The owners are very kind as well. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Stopped in yesterday for dinner after The Oregon Symphony and the food was fabulous. I have been eating here since I was a teen in the mid-90's and feared they had closed as the last time we walked to Chinatown and the surrounding area after the symphony they were closed and A LOT of the restaurants were closed to had left. We really wanted Chinese so we decided to walk to the same area again in hopes of some re-opening and Mandarin House was open! I love the ambiance of the glass ceiling, always have, and of course the food. We ordered Cumin Beef and Shredded Pork with Peppers with a spice level of 3 and it was perfect. We enjoy spicy food and most places we tell them to cook it to the maximum level of heat and it comes out "American spicy" not hot at all, this place is the real deal. Neither dish was fried, both had complex, delicate flavors even with heat, rice was perfect and we have BBQ Pork for an appetizer and it was delectable. I think it was house made and not the premade stuff a lot of places just order in and slice up. The sweet sauce drizzled on top of the pork was divine. Thank you for a wonderful dinner and lunch the day after. Service was excellent and the owner was kind and gave us some additional rice for our take home boxes. We will be back and I hope Mandarin House is around for another 30 years!! read more

One of Portland's old gems in china town me and my gf came here after a concert. It's very small and homey the service was great and the food was really good from the dumplings to the chow mein we were fans of it all. If you go make sure to do it during the day tho since it's in a sketchy part of town that's our only regret lol. read more

4 of had dinner last night at Mandarin House. Holy hallelujah!! I wanted real Chinese food and this place was excellent! We ordered enough food for about 15 people lol. Everything we got was perfect! From the sesame cold noodles, scallion pancakes, Singapore noodles, hot pot, chongqing chicken, bbq pork boa buns. To much to list! Will come back for sure next time in Portland. Absolutely freaking delicious! read more

Not a fan of the taste of my orders. Spicy tofu had a red oily sauce, can't seem to taste the spicyness at all. Chef Special Pan Fried Noodles, lots of veggies, chicken, and thick noodles, very large portion, not particularly special. I came for takeout after 9pm, the outside is dark and quiet, and I had not been to this side of Portland--would watch your surroundings. Friendly service, though I was sure that my phone-in order was taken (told ready in 15min) but they won't cook the food until I show up due to possibility that I am a no show. I arrived in 15min. Then, I had to wait 10 minutes for the food. read more

The food was not good, not bad just boring. The flavors were really weird for what the food was supposed to be. Not traditional Chinese food at all, I got egg flower soup and it was made completely wrong and not how egg flower soup actually is. The chow mein was so bland. Disappointed I expected it to be better for how expensive it was. read more

One of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Portland. They're still here for reason, and it's to bring authentic Chinese dishes to your table. If you go here you MUST order at least one Szechuan style dish; it is the chef's specialty. Other stand out dishes are mouth watering chicken, cumin beef, spicy fish hot pot, and mapo tofu. Avoid the fried rice, it is not good. There is a section of the menu written in Chinese, these items are not listen anywhere else in English. If you want to order one of these unique offerings, ask the server for help. The ambience is nostalgic and warm. I love the neon sign and sun bleached photos (typical of old fashioned Chinese restaurants). Service is great too. read more

Yum!!! Very authentic Chinese food. Excellent service. Love sauerkraut pork hot pot, fish in spicy oil and boa

THE BIG: One of the only places open during Thanksgiving. #Saved THE BLACK AND WHITE: The roomie and I decided to head down to Portland over the Thanksgiving break. We didn't really plan out that everything would be closed. Fortunately, most Chinese restaurants are open and we stumbled upon Mandarin House. Looking at the menu, they have a secret Chinese menu in the front and a regular menu in the back. We tried getting one of the dinner specials but owners said that we shouldn't get the Americanized Chinese food XD. I thought that was really funny. We saw another group order succulent pig. Apparently it takes 4 hours to make...and costs $35. We were super hungry and decided to take the plunge between two people. We also put in an order for beef pancake and black bean noodles. Food came out fast and the succulent pig was definitely the star of the show. The meat and fat just melted in your mouth. It was a lil salty so a rice palette cleanser is needed. The beef pancake was also super delicious. The black bean noodles were ok, not the best zha jia mein I've had but it did it's job. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, spent $30.85 including tip for the succulent pig, beef pancake, and black bean noodles. It was a thankful thanksgiving indeed! read more

Love this place. Has been around a long time , family owned and operated and food is outstanding. Very authentic food and the service is also great. They have a Szechuan chicken that is a dry rub that is delicious. The steamed dumplings are great also and if in season, highly recommend the bamboo shoots. I always get the beef hot pot, amazing flavor (spicy). read more

Found this hole in the wall in Chinatown. Honestly, nothing Philip or Jaime ordered blew be away. The general tso's was okay, but not better than Han fusion. There was a man sitting next to us listening to our conversation in the empty dining room. Afterward felt like my heart was racing...idk if it was the salt? Wouldn't go back read more

Probably one of the best food places I tried out here in Portland! We tried the pork buns, xiao long bao, chicken dumplings and chicken chow mein. They give really good portion sizes and everything tasted so fresh! We also ordered a Tsingtao and wow was that a nice big bottle to pair with our food. Staff was super nice and I hope to come back here someday again :) read more

I placed an order on Postmates and it was spilled. They should have used 3 containers instead of two. It was over filled. Very disappointed. Also the container is made of paper... I ordered the boiled fish dish, there were a huge amount of oil in it so the oil dissolved the container. 定了一个外带的水煮鱼，外带的盒子是纸做的， 盒底已经化掉了，汤都撒了袋子里。他们为了省盒子只给我了两个盒子，根本装不下还使劲装。 read more

If you are looking for a Americanized Chinese restaurant that serves sweet and sour pork, don't go here, you will be very disappointed. Should you want to experience Szechuan cooking, don't miss this place. The hotpot is their signature dish, as are their noodles. They use Szechuan pepper (Which is a tree berry), it is spicy but makes your tongue tingle, quite an experience. Service is good and the portions huge. read more

terrible! Me and my friend want to come here for dinner, but my friend couldn't find it, so I parked in the parking lot, and I went to my friend to bring her here , and when I got out of the car, there was a man dressed like a homeless person walking towards me He was also talking loudly and fiercely, which was very scary, so I hurried to find my friend. When I returned to my car with my friend, he was still in front of my car, saying that he called to tow my car away, and he was swearing fiercely there, scaring people. My friend and I hurriedly got in the car and left without daring to go there to eat. And!!!It was very disrespectful !!!!him taking a viedeo or photo to us!!with his phone! Did I know later that he might be the security guard of this parking lot? But his attitude towards guests is really uncomfortable. We are afraid to go now. If he was there, it's the first time to meet such a person. It was terrible! ! ! read more

This food is terrible, I'm from Seattle stopping by Portland and decided to order this because of all the good reviews..bad mistake. I would've rather had Panda Express. I ordered the broccoli beef, beef chow mein, egg flower soup. It was bland and the meat looks pink, I couldn't take more than 3 bites, I had to throw it out. read more

This is a little cute family owned restaurant across the street from voodoo donuts! The owner is very nice, and he makes sure that his quality of food is up to par with his customers. Spicy fish: 5/5 I love ordering this dish, the fish is soft and smooth. They pair it with what I believe is cabbage. I recommend ordering this dish ONLY if you like spicy. Pig intestines: 5/5 Something about pig intestines that I just love. They seasoned this perfectly, and had a great chew. This dish is also spicy, so if you don't like spicy, don't order this either. Chili chicken:2/5 This was my least favorite dish, because the meat was super small and dry. I've had my fair share of chili chicken and it definitely should not taste like this. All in all this i place is great for something spicy or on a cold day! read more

I came here with my fiancé on a Wednesday for lunch. The place was really quiet with only two other customers. The music and ambiance gave off a classy vibe with a sort of mom and pop service. The service was alright. The server checked in on the other customers sitting directly next to us but never came back to check on us after delivering our dishes. Most of our food was good. We ordered crab puffs, tofu and clear noodles hot pot, and tofu eggplant hot pot. The two hot pots were delicious and more than enough food. Each hot pot could feed 3 people. The crab puffs were disappointing. The inside looked like a thin layer of cheese. They were pretty much filled with nothing. Overall, the restaurant was good but not excellent. read more

This restaurant, first ate here in 2015, has the best Chinese bread I've ever eaten in Asia. It's so soft, delicious and warm. I loved it so much I asked if I could buy a loaf and they let me! Told me how to prepare it and sent me on my way. read more

The flavor of the food is good. I can tell the chef is an experienced chef from China, and he/she can make amazing food....if he/she wants to. However, the food quality is inconsistent. Same dish would have different ingredients on different days. Food is well cut sometimes but it could be bad sometimes too. I like the restaurant but wish it could be more consistent. read more

The is the best Northern Chinese cuisine to be had anywhere in the metropolitan area. As stated by others, ASK! I've been coming here for 15 years. This family owned restaurant is fantastic! They serve authentic northern Chinese food (if you know what to order, if not just ask) and the authority on this is my husband who has lived in China for 2 years. My favorite dishes are the seasonal vegetables with garlic, eggplant hot pot, scallion beef pancake, black fungus chicken, and many more. I highly recommend it for special occasions as they easily seat large groups around a big round table. read more

My friend and I ordered their handmade noodles and the length of their noodles followed a normal distribution centered around 3 inches. Chinese tradition states that noodles must be long so the eater lives a long life. For those of you in tune with Chinese traditions and the length of noodles...you'd understand my sadness. For those who don't, can you imagine trying to pick up short noodles out of a large bowl of soup? Oh and their soup was watered down and not spicy as it should be. The service was horrific. After waiting for eons for the owner to pick up our money and make change....she had her ~8 year old son walk 15 feet to hand us change instead of doing it herself. Throughout the meal her two sons were watching tv and playing with their iPad near the cash register. Highly unprofessional. read more

We tried Mandarin House to kick off Portland's Dumpling Week. Wow! great food! The two pork dumpling varieties we ordered were delicious, and the steamed pork buns were as good as any to be had in San Francisco's Chinatown. The hot and sour soup is a spicy broth with lots of tofu. This downtown spot has its own parking lot, so there's no reason to not try it during Dumpling Week or any other time. read more

Strongly recommend Beijing sauce pork. So authentic with finely sliced green onion root that gives wonderful flavor when rolled in Chinese tortilla.
