Fresh local mandarin oranges
Kristian D.

Mandarin Hill Orchards is on the other side of the tracks from most orchards, literally! Tucked back into the hills behind Penryn, they have a focused operation selling their mandarin oranges to the public straight from the tree. Parking is decent, although the lot is on a hill which may require effort. The facility is really more of a commercial operation with a small retail area. Options are really geared towards large purchases of oranges with only a few small bags. I liked the flavor of the oranges here, but the skins were a little difficult to peel. They offer some additional goods near the register, but this place is really just oranges. If you are looking to buy a lot of mandarin oranges for your employees, family, or that great party, Mandarin Hill Orchards is a nice option in Penryn. Just look both ways before crossing the railroad tracks!

Clementines, yum!

Best mandarins ever! So juicy and the healthiest winter treat. You can get 5 lb bags, 10 pound boxes, or a field lug of fruit. They do not offer you pick for the health of their trees. If you buy a lug, you can bring a crate or they provide a bag. The owners are wonderful people and it's a family atmosphere.

This is 2nd year I've been to Mandarin Hill Orchards and about 3 years into eating their mandarins. Winter is a very cold and cranky time for me, but knowing it's also mandarin season is what gets me through the holidays. I've tried other satsumas and etc from other stores (sprouts and whole foods), not the same! People here are super friendly and I really only buy the seconds. I do recommend calling ahead of time and do not drive into the place with a trailer; you will get stuck (I learned the hard way). Mandarins are super affordable and super yummers! TIP: bring your own garbage bags, it'll cost you 50cents each otherwise as of 12/28/18

Amazing just the environment the people and reason to be there. All the beauty of Sierras with the "real" Sierra Gold growing on trees.

Our favorite thing is to thaw the juice only slightly and eat it with a spoon. It is like the best sweet, tart and vividly flavored Icee in the world. The shop also has canned jellies, nuts, candies, gifts and decor from various local businesses and craftspersonds. Check out the freezer section for homemade pies to bake at house. Blue Goose Produce is open the whole calendar year. It's located on Taylor Rd in downtown Loomis,…read moreso it's one of the most convenient locations to sample and buy seasonal Mandarin Oranges. As of 11/19/25, which is early season, you can buy a 4 lb bag for $10. While I was there, one farmer was sorting the oranges out by size. Apparently, the medium ones are the most popular. You could buy small ones for $1.50 per pound. Mandarins were attractive and juicy. Update: It's the sweetest and easiest to peel of the three different bags I bought on 11/19/25. Blue Goose Produce is associated with Westview Growers. If I remember correctly, there are 1500 mandarin orange trees in their orchards, so you can buy mandarins there until April! Farmers are friendly and informative to chat with. In October 2025, I believe I spoke with the owner Mark about the Blue Goose decor. One antiquities specialist soon found him a large metallic goose after he requested it. He painted it dark blue himself. This goose gets outfit changes to match the holiday! His family has been collecting blue goose decor over many years, which you can find throughout the store. I learned that a female goose can just be called a goose. A male goose is a gander, and Gander Taphouse is in the same plaza. Yesterday I learned that mandarin oranges taste better a day or longer after they have been picked. It takes time for them to sweeten. You can find a variety of local farm goods here, such as honey, scented candles, Earth & Vine products, local Newcastle Mandarin Ranch products, and Petaluma Creamery cheeses. You can buy pies here. I might call ahead to ask about available flavors. You can find limited produce here. I've bought a large tomato, finger grapes, and a ruby grapefruit here. Fuyu and Hachiya Persimmons are currently in season and look beautiful. Prices resemble that of a farmers market. If you like to support local farms, please stop by Blue Goose Produce.

Costco

Alright, time for an update!…read more Costco still remains a daunting, unfriendly and very troubling place for me. It's American mass consumerism at its prime and worst. I need to go when the fewest people are there, otherwise it feels like a horror movie... all those people running around with multiple carts overfilled with stuff, some actually frantic. Besides who really needs six jars of super sized mayonnaise unless you have a family of twelve or more? However, there are some redeeming factors to shopping here, and possibly getting a good deal. This still remains the ONLY Costco in the area I'll visit for otherwise being run over by a crazed shopper with a full pallet of merchandise. So. Some great finds- We got two new good quality camping chairs for the outdoor concerts we attend at a rock bottom price! Woo hoo! Then I found a large container, yet still manageable, of my favorite snack treat, Aussie Bites, at a great price. Please don't buy them out!!! The maple syrup is good quality and less expensive than anywhere. The paper goods can also be a very good deal. Just have a big storage space for a gazillion rolls of toilet paper. They were unfortunately out, or no longer carrying, two other favorites, the top sirloin hamburgers and the Korean dumplings (an easy and quick, delicious treat). I recommend perusing the aisles as one never knows what really interesting product or bargain is lurking in the depths of this monster store. Oh, and if you want a ginormous TV that will never fit anywhere or a casket, just in case, they have those too. Plus, it's fun to count how many giant SUVs are parked in compact parking spaces to be as close to the front door as possible! After all, there's enough walking inside! You do need a membership to enter.

They say Costco on them but they run through Electrify America, and they are F-A-S-T. I got up to 230 miles (80% ish for me) in 10 minutes from nearly dead quickly after I shopped. The crowd has usually been lighter than other Costco locations, which makes getting in and out easier. I think part of that is the location. Sierra College Boulevard does not have a huge commercial strip or much dense housing beyond the two nearby shopping centers and small neighborhoods, so the store feels calmer than the bigger warehouses. If you like Costco but not the chaos, this location has been the one I keep coming back to.
