Remember when spending the whole weekend on the couch watching Netflix and ordering takeout was a fun thing instead of the new normal? Well why not get off the couch and go get some fruit! Highland Orchard is one of the bounty crop of mandarin orange growers in Placer County with a nice operation to bring some cheer and Vitamin C to the season. Parking is decent at this farm especially in the back. South Placer around Newcastle is quickly becoming the new Apple Hill with a mixture of wineries, breweries, and farms selling various produce. Mandarins grow well here, and many orchards now sell to the public. Highland has many awards with a nice fruit with a balance of sweet and acid that appeals to many. They also a-peel easily which is fun! The orchard has a large barn with straightforward shopping. You can get several sizes of fresh oranges with a small selection of mandarin products. On my visit, there was also a vendor selling mandarin smoked salmon! They lack any entertainment or art markets, but the simple and enjoyable experience of buying straight from the grower is nice. Highland Orchard is a great reason to venture outside and get some fresh air and oranges. It's a little off the main path requiring a bit of a drive, but it's still close to Roseville and other suburban Sacramento areas.

Stopped here today to buy some mandarins. They were sold in 5 lb bags ($8.) or 10 lb bags ($14.) or boxed to mail. Several baked goods & foods available to purchase. I did notice a little carousel outside for kiddies to ride, but I didn't investigate what activities were available. Just wanted to get my mandarins, see what baked goods were available & be on my way. There are samples available for all food items that they sell here. I must say that these are the best mandarins that I have eaten. They're sweet & the peel practically falls off! Seedless too! I had heard in the past that these mandarins were good & they are! Bought a mandarin bread & is tasty. Glad I made the trip here today.

Great mandarin orchard, super friendly and helpful staff. They were open early the day after Thanksgiving, and were really helpful with figuring out how many mandarins we could ship in flat rate USPS boxes. They can also ship for you. This orchard grows sweet owari satsuma mandarins that are easy to peel and eat, and you can try samples of their products. Will be returning!

Was considering checking out the Mountain Mandarin Festival up in Auburn but detoured to Penryn (Horseshoe Bar Road) after seeing a "Mandarins" sign with an arrow. Followed the road and one of the other orchards was closed Saturdays, and somehow ended up at Highland. Outside they also have kiddie carousel ride and kettle corn. Inside you could try free samples of their satsuma mandarins, which, as advertised, are indeed hefty, tree-ripened sweet, so juicy, easy to peel, and seedless. Yum. Buy an extra bag or you'll run out sooner and have to make the drive back up, haha. Grown in Placer County, part of the Mountain Mandarin Association. Went home with several 10-lb bags of satsumas (clementines are later in the season), $14 each. They also had them by the box in various weights, as well as mandarin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, pies, cookies, and more! Cash only but they gave me a Mandarin Club stamp card, for every 12 bags of mandarins, the 13th is free. Neat to be supporting local growers, and fresh picked, great quality produce!

When mandarins are in season, you can pretty much be assured that what you're buying here is no more than a day or two from being picked from the trees. It's the end of the season now, and I picked up probably one of the last 10 pound bags they'll be offering for now. Even though it was end of season, the mandarins are just the way I like them - the best variety (in my opinion) - easy to peel, seedless, juicy. So glad I have something like this nearby!

You feel as if you've been transported into the 1940s where life was simpler and what was grown on the farm provided food for your family, neighbors and friends. Old buildings, packing sheds and farm vehicles gives you a piece of old Americana that is slowly disappearing today. The vintage atmosphere and the beautiful hills surrounding you gives you a sense of calm and a feeling of what a farm was like back in the day. You cannot make this stuff up. This is the way it was and still is today. The history behind this place is amazing! Four generations have kept this 30-acre fruit farm alive. Even after the Great Depression and Internment camps, they rolled up their sleeves and kept farming. Much of the rootstock was brought from Japan. There are some trees that date back possibly 150 years. This farm is the real deal! The Mandarins are sweet and juicy. They have several varieties, including Zishan, Okitsu Wase, Page, Unshiu, and the most popular, Owari Satsuma. You can sample them to see which ones you like the best. The family is very picky about the quality of fruit that they sell. They pick fruit daily and everything in the fruit stand has been freshly-picked either that day or the day before. Prices are reasonable, and even lower prices for seconds, which are still great. And it's self-service; can you believe it! The "Honor System". Wow!

The 10 lb bag for $22 isn't as good a deal, maybe because you are purchasing the cardboard box? You can also buy crates for $50, which is the best value. I think a crate contains 40 lb. As of 11/19/25, which is early season, you can buy a 4 lb bag for $10. While I was there, one farmer was sorting the oranges out by size. Apparently, the medium ones are the most popular. You could buy small ones for $1.50 per pound. Mandarins were attractive and juicy. Update: It's the sweetest and easiest to peel of the three different bags I bought on 11/19/25. Blue Goose Produce is associated with Westview Growers. If I remember correctly, there are 1500 mandarin orange trees in their orchards, so you can buy mandarins there until April! Farmers are friendly and informative to chat with. In October 2025, I believe I spoke with the owner Mark about the Blue Goose decor. One antiquities specialist soon found him a large metallic goose after he requested it. He painted it dark blue himself. This goose gets outfit changes to match the holiday! His family has been collecting blue goose decor over many years, which you can find throughout the store. I learned that a female goose can just be called a goose. A male goose is a gander, and Gander Taphouse is in the same plaza. Yesterday I learned that mandarin oranges taste better a day or longer after they have been picked. It takes time for them to sweeten. You can find a variety of local farm goods here, such as honey, scented candles, Earth & Vine products, local Newcastle Mandarin Ranch products, and Petaluma Creamery cheeses. You can buy pies here. I might call ahead to ask about available flavors. You can find limited produce here. I've bought a large tomato, finger grapes, and a ruby grapefruit here. Fuyu and Hachiya Persimmons are currently in season and look beautiful. Prices resemble that of a farmers market. If you like to support local farms, please stop by Blue Goose Produce.
