I have always purchased these ices since I was a teen. Consistently delicious and creamy. My favorites were the batata, coconut and passion cream. In the ice variety (milk free) I loved the raspberry, it's so reminiscent of my time in DR. Sadly, the quality has diminished greatly. These are mostly ice crystals with a faint flavor of whatever is on the label. I buy these at $5-$7 each at my local bodegas. At that cost I can just buy a pint of ice cream instead. With the lower quality, I rather spend my money on other ice cream. It's super sad as these were my guilty pleasure. I hope they bring back the quality that kept me a loyal customer. read more

Mamita's Ices are awesome. Every single one of them. A local product born in Queens has roots from the Dominican Republic, they've managed to create a frozen treat that is reminiscent of ice cream in popsicle form. It is a consummate perfect post meal snack and perfect for any place that has warm weather. They are a perfect example of a local product that has gone wholesale, finding its way to different corners of the country. They have a wide assortment of flavors that could suit just about every sweets-loving palate out there. The ices range from their original tamarind to lemon lime to raspberry and guava (this one, wow!). On the flip side they have a series of "cream" based ones with some fruits like mango, coconut, and raspberry but others like batata and bizcocho. If you can score a box of some kind, be sure to go with the mix & match (variety pack). I've seen them in supermarkets and food festivals. They've got a good thing going; sort of reminds me of something I'd see on Shark Tank. These are delicious! The only reason I tried them was because they have an interesting looking and different type of packaging (I love authentic ethnic foods/treats/desserts) and because they were on sale lol. I got the coconut cream and yuuuum, so smooth and creamy. I'll love these on a hot day, but don't mind if I do on a rainy, chilly day like today either! They are pretty big and quite satisfying. Negatives are that they are marketed as "healthy"--*gives skeptical side eye*--let's be for real, these aren't healthy. But if you're going to have a treat it's best that cane sugar and natural, whole ingredients are used (although I noticed they contain some artificial flavors as well). At 160 calories each, I sadly have to keep myself from devouring the whole box. Agreeing with the packaging complaints, I wanted to rip one open on the way home and the packaging requires scissors to do so, womp. My greedy self had to wait a couple of blocks to chow down. Supposedly these are in bodegas all over the city, but I have yet to spot them or maybe it's because I didn't know to look. The Associated on Ave C and 8th Street carries them and I'm about to go back for the batata flavor tonight before the sale runs out! read more

We found these at the deli tonight...we've never heard of them before. We were so glad we found them! We tried the passion and the raspberry cream flavors. The ice was flavorful and creamy. It tasted SO good. The ices are quite big also...no puny portion here! I can't wait to try other flavors. These Ices are surprisingly good given the crappy sleeve packaging. They had them once (but no longer) in a box of multiples in the freezer aile of my local supermarket. I was able to try the batata cream, guava, mango, and coconut flavors. My favorite,the batata, tastes so creamy with notes of dulce de leche and vanilla. The guava, my second favorite, tastes exactly like guava only caramelized in sugar syrup. I wish they had sapote "mamey". One serious complaint is their marketing of their brand as all natural products when some of their ices contain artificial flavors and dyes. read more

For the past few years I've noticed a growing trend in Washington Heights in the summer: Denizens walking around looking sated, cooled and refreshed on humid summer days. How could they be so happy and contended despite a pronounced smell of urine and "1" train delays? Men and women, young and old, presenting a cacophony of "Aahh"s while they all sucked at curious over sized cylinders wrapped daintily in a deli napkin. "What were those cylinders?", I would ask myself over and over again, weeping, as my sweat and tears pooled in my boots. Then, one particularly unbearable day, I noticed the sound of children laughing and music playing from the freezer of my local bodega. When I opened the door, my jaw dropped and my face went aghast. Children were playing with a radio in the freezer of a bodega. After I collected myself after seeing the sight, I noticed a box of white cylinders, resting gingerly in a cardboard box. Smiling at me. These were the very frozen monoliths those happy denizens must have been eating... Curious, I picked up one of these frozen anomalies. How strange and alien. I rushed to a hardware store to buy a large pair of shears and quickly opened the top of the treat. I began to eat it. The silky smoothness of the coconut cream treat stopped time. It was the perfect combination of silky, creamy, sweet and cold. My gasps of glee were met with awkward glances in the hardware store, but I didn't care. I was hooked. And I was happy. I went to a bodega down the street to buy some, and saw these multicoloured freezer pops, and my curiosity got the best of me, and I bought a few. I even tried the Batata flavour, thinking (as Talia S. above me) that it would be horrible. But I actually REALLY enjoyed all of the flavours. I'm currently eating a mango cream flavored one right now... Clearly I was inspired to write an awesome review. Mamita's Ices are NOT your typical flavored ice pops that kids are in love with. These are creamy, healthy, REAL INGREDIENT ice cream that is frozen into a pop shape (and they are wayyy bigger than typical pops, but believe me you'll be tempted to finish it all)... I love it! The mango cream is the second flavor I've tried, and the coconut was the first. You can literally taste the fruit in the ice. It's fulfilling, cold, and delicious. My goal is to try every flavor which isn't hard- they're pretty much in every bodega and supermarket in inner-city neighborhoods. I'm disappointed I didn't try them sooner! read more

THE BEST ICES EVERRRR!!!! I AM HOOKED!! I sent my daughter to the store to get me a frozen fruit coconut popsicle and she came home with this... I was upset because its not what I wanted... but much to my surprise .. the minute I tried it .. Maybe I'm being presumptuous because I only had one flavor (batata) but these ice pops r seriously good. Being from the Midwest I had never seen them and I stumbled on them at a quick mart and I'm hooked. The batata flavor is like good homemade vanilla ice cream or a better yet frozen condensed milk. Im addicted to the coconut cream. I keep at least 5 at a time in my chest freezer. I live in the BK, so I am going to try out the factory in Ozone Park to see if I can purchase by the case. a cheap sweet treat popular with the spanish community and has even the gringos enjoying the sweet tropical sugary coolness. you can find these long cylinder hard as a rock treat in the inner city bodegas and yemen candy shops all over the city hoods and now even chain supermarkets in the city and beyond are selling these ice treats. the folks who started it all are from the dominican republic and turned a family delight into a big deal with its factory in queens and employing folks from the area, which is really what i call the american dream done right . the mango , coconut, guava, batata,raspberry etc, are the flavors that seem the most popular . to my surprise it's really good and much better then those frozen iced no flavor popsicles , really creamy and sweet texture with no bitter after taste. i have about 6 fat tubes in my freezer at the moment and the picture of mamitas looks like a young betty white. give it a try especially with a hot summer around the corner, enjoy. read more
