I usually come here for lunch because it's so close to my job and the food is so good. I do wish they offered more hot sauce. I always ask for extra and they only give one. I just ordered yesterday and there wasn't any hot sauce in the bag so I went back in to ask for one and the lady gave me the tiniest cup of hot sauce. Other then that food is great. I truly was enjoying my night here up until the treatment I received from the security team was just unacceptable. Long story short, I walked in with a group of 3 girls on a Friday night, everyone was having a great time, I separated from my group as I went to talk to some people at the bar, next thing you know my friend that I originally came with is getting escorted out by 4 security guards when in reality it should've been the other way around. They should've escorted out the person that was bothering her to begin with. As soon as I walk towards my friend who is getting escorted out, the security guard takes my drink away and pushes me to go as well along with my two other friends. What was there reason? Association? I don't even know, I asked them multiple times why I also was getting kicked out and they wouldn't even speak to me. Mind you, I was not drunk and had only two Paloma's the entire night. To not even receive an explanation as to what there reasoning behind me and my other friends who did absolutely nothing to get kicked out...I felt extremely disrespected. I really wanted to like this place but to be treated like that was on another level. I doubt I'll ever come back here again. Next time when I'm asking why, give me a legit answer and don't ignore me as if I'm not coherent. read more

I loved, loved this place yesterday Sunday with the live banda. Unexpectedly walked into this place after the 49ers game with my girls and stayed for the Live music. The best part is that it is free entry. I was told that Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays is Norteñas and Sunday is Banda. I can't believe this is in my own city and just now finding out about it. Fun and delicious spot ! The tacos are on point and with the rice and beans they make even better . You could really tell the quality of the food is so great! I was vending in front of their restaurant as I was participating in a street festival the city of Downey had. I decided to eat there because their prices seemed fair and their food looked good. I walked to the entrance and I was stopped by a security guard. Keep in mind this was around 6pm. The security guy who was an older veterano looking guy asked, " what do you need?" in a stern voice. I replied, " ummm I wanted to order some food. Can I order to go"? He said, " yes go ahead and go inside. She'll help you out". I ordered my food and received it fairly quickly. I was literally right in front of their restaurant eating while working. Once I finished it was already dark and I wanted to throw away my trash from my to go order from their restaurant. They had a trash can right there so I asked a different security guard just to be polite, " can I throw my trash in here"? And he replied to me " no go find a different trash can in the street". I replied as I walk d away, "even if I bought this food from your restaurant"? It was just so annoying that they had all these obstacles to enjoy their food. It's a pity because their food was actually decent but you have to go through a brigade. Not worth it! Those security guards need to ease up on people just trying to grab a bite of food. I guess the security guard with glasses and a bald head due to male balding was projecting his insecurities on everyone. This job probably makes him feel better about himself so for that I am giving this place two stars. The owners seriously need to consider different security guards or retrain them. This was one of my favorite spots to eat growing up in Downey. I excitedly returned to share the joy with my husband & sadly, was disappointed. I ordered pozole, a fish ceviche tostada. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas, and my mom ordered carne asada tacos. While the food was good, it wasn't as amazing as I once remembered. The tostada's only discernible flavor was lime, to the point where every bite resulted in a puckered face. The enchiladas, while good, weren't as saucy as one might hope. And the tacos were just nothing to get excited about. The pozole was the highlight (or I'm just biased because I love pozole) and was full of meat and not just broth. But, even the broth lacked a bit of depth, compared to other pozoles I have had recently. And lastly, the horchata tasted pretty watered down. The final straw was that the restaurant smelled clean, and not in a good way. It smelled like a bathroom and while I'm all for a clean bathroom, I don't want to smell that odor when I'm eating. Will I go back? Sadly, most likely not. There are many good Mexican restaurants in the area. But, o will say, it's pretty cheap. This is a bummer review but as someone who has lived in Downey most of my life it's super important. 1. This place has cheap good food & beer 2. Owner is very nice, good service 3. However, the atmosphere was the ABSOLUTE worst I have ever experienced..... I love supporting local businesses. I showed up there with 2 friends about 2 hours ago to watch the dodger game (they have banners proudly stating they show the dodger games). The place had about 16 people in it. They had the dodger game on, but they had music playing over it even louder.. We soon learned that the table of people behind us was the owners son (or sons). There was about 8 of them, so half the bar.... They were controlling the music, playing the same 4 songs on repeat, being obnoxiously loud, some of their friends kept yelling "get all these dodger fans out of here" umm... We were the only paying customers there - that group was walking behind the bar serving themselves. If that wasn't bad enough, they weren't buzzed, no, they were completely drunk by about 5 o'clock. We dealt with it for almost 2 hours. The tipping point is when the owners son siting behind us begins yelling to his friend "fuck you" "you don't fucking know me" "I don't have to fucking listen to you" "do you know who I am?" We got up immediately, because it seems like they were about to fist fight, asked for our check, meanwhile he's still yelling fuck this fuck that in the background. There were only 2 patrons left at this point, that guy cleared house. We ran over to the next bar over Joesph's, and they saved the day. Went Friday night and they told us if we wanted to sit on the area where you can actually see the live band there is a minimum of buying 3 buckets of beer and on the other side it's 2 buckets of beer. So if it's a party of 4 people and you really don't drink much that's not right. I asked what if I don't drink beer? They replied that I had to buy a bottle of liquor and that's like over 250.00. To me that is very ridiculous. Drinks are 14.00 and that is the house liquor. I asked for a Long Island ice tea and that drink comes with tequila well the bartender didn't even put tequila. We also ordered food we just didn't go for drinks and music. I will not be coming to this place anymore where they tell you that you have to buy a minimum of 3 buckets of beer. Tired of the same breakfast spot I veered into Downtown Downey. It was either BBQ or here. It's small and I liked it because it has an outdoor seating area. The inside is small. I'm assuming the owner took my order. Nice gentleman. It was past noon, I wanted breakfast. Chorizo con huevos I declared. He accepted my order. I was introduced to Mambo Grill back in 2007 by my daughter and her friends. David was always so welcoming and his wife made the best soups. Fast forward to today, I picked up albondigas (meatball soup) and I was so disappointed the recipe has changed! There must be a NEW COOK, I didn't like my soup at all. It used to be my "go to" soup when I felt a cold coming on. David and his wife are no longer there to greet us, the menu selection taste different and the atmosphere has changed. I understand they're trying to compete with the new Downtown Downey demographic but I miss the family owned restaurant feeling of the place. I doubt I will go back. BTW, I few months ago I picked up tortilla soup to take to my daughter's work for her lunch. The new staff didn't put the lid on right and the soup spilled all over my car when I picked up the bag. Went in today and my friend and I had the enchilada lunch special. It was horrible. The Fideo soup was good but everything else was disgusting. The rice was old and dry and the enchiladas were dried out and the chicken was dry. They put melted cheese on top as an attempt to hide the old dried out enchiladas. The beans were cold. I complained to the waitress who said sorry I'll let him know. Meaning the cook I assume. We didn't finish all this yucky food and what we did eat I was consumed in the first few minutes because we were very hungry. Before we even got up to leave the waitress was spraying Pine-Sol on the table directly next to us and the smell was very strong. I could taste the Pine-Sol in my mouth and then completely gave up and left. If you do go there don't get the enchiladas. The place is under new ownership and it has definitely affected the quality of the food. It's really sad because we used to really like going there. We won't be going back ever again.
