The things that captivate me most about Mambo Grill are the sound of food sizzling on the grill, the vibrant Hispanic art decorating the walls, and the sound of David the owner of Mambo Grill, greeting you as you walk through the door. Mambo Grill has a very authentic Mexican feel when you walk inside; along with a sense of friendliness instilled by the workers. With the food and special service, you will always enjoy your visit at Mambo Grill.
Mambo Grill is located in the heart of Downey. Surround by local businesses; it is also down the street from Downey High School and the Downey Police Station. Mambo is a grill but recently became a sports bar as well. It is open from Tuesday through Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. driving down the long street full of shoppers and customers; it is not hard for Mambo Grill to catch your eye. The huge blue "Mambo" sign hovering above the satisfied customers who eat outside on the patio attracts you automatically. You can't help but wonder what's going on inside this fine unique restaurant. There are two sides to Mambo grill. One side is for dining and the other side is a sports bar. When you walk inside the Sports Bar the dark detail of the room insist on a fun night out. A huge bar centers the room surrounded by plasma TV's, tables, and chairs. On the other hand, if you are not in the mood for sports or drinking you can go to the other side of the restaurant to dine. The walls scream yellow and red, as if proudly embracing the Hispanic art that embodies them. David is the owner of this fine establishment. And being a big family man, he has pictures of his family on the walls. He also has an authentic looking painting of his father on the wall who looks exactly like him. The family portraits add this home feeling vibe to the place. Mambo Grill is big, but not big enough to make you feel out of place or distanced to keep your own private space. It is a somewhat small but at the same time big perimeter. You can always see what is going on in the restaurant and are in calling distance within David, who is always right by your side to talk about your day or to get you more food.
Mambo Grill serves all kinds of food, from traditional Mexican dishes, to your classic American hamburger or steak. My favorite is the Tostada. The price of a Tostada is about $3.00 and a medium soda is $1.00. Mambo Grill keeps all the prices of their food reasonable. The Tostada is a mouth full of explosion. Sitting waiting for you food, anticipating the moment your food is ready right in front of you. You can hear the sizzle on the grill and smell of Carne Asada as it enters your nose. And if you are a little bit impatient, David is always willing to entertain you in the meantime. When your food is done, the waiter walks out of the kitchen and places it in front of you. Happy as can be, I prepare to dig in my Tostada like a little kid on Christmas day digging into their presents. The Tostada is light but just a tad bit heavy enough for you to balance it. You must be cautious with your Tostada for all the contents on top will fall off. The crunchy hard Tostada supports all the light mushy soft contents of beans, lettuce, cheese, and Carne Asada. I prepare myself to eat. I start with the center because I'm afraid eating the sides will send all the food flying on my plate like an avalanche. I bite into my Tostada and it is like hearing music for the first time, just heavenly. The Tostadas crunchy yet mushy delicious contents fill my mouth and in that moment I know I'm going to order another Tostada. David's recipes always seem to channel an inner state of mind and remind you there is no place like home.
The feeling at being Mambo Grill is something else. Immediately when you walk into Mambo you are greeted by a big giant "Hello". Whether you know David or not he will always make sure you get to know him. David is not a shy person at all. He is full of joy, energy, and always eager to take your order and help you. When he has free time from taking orders or serving people, he makes it his duty to walk to each table and strike up an interesting conversation. You can talk about anything to him. His greyish white hair and comb looking mustache shows his roots of Mexican masculine culture but his soft puppy eyes give him a softer side. He always has a big smile swiped across his face going from ear to ear. There is never a moment where you don't see David other than happy.
Growing up in a Mexican environment as a child and losing that as you get older makes me miss and value the Hispanic culture for what it is. And Mambo Grill really has all those benefactors. David is like a really cool Grandfather there to hear you out and be your friend. Other than that the food keeps you there intrigued to what other dishes David might be hiding from you. There really is no place like Mambo Grill. read more
