Not good. Hope (for their sake) that it gets better. The atmosphere in that space is cold, not warm or inviting. The flavors in the food are not well developed. And if Mexican food isn't flavorful, there's no point to it. This place was Villa La Paz for about a minute, all of a sudden it's Mama Mayra's #2. Same staff (unfriendly and irritated-seeming waitress), and the sign on 11th still says "Villa La Paz." I have heard a lot of good things about Mama Mayra's on Blair, so I was hopeful about this outpost. I was suffering from a cold, and I was looking forward to a good spicy Sopa de Pollo. Figured they'd have that, as it's kind of a basic menu item. Didn't see it on the menu, so I asked the waitress about it, there was a slight hesitation, and then she said, "No, we don't have that." Then, an older man came in and ordered the special in Spanish: menudo to go. Menudo is a soup that is way more complicated than a simple sopa de pollo would have been. He waited for half an hour for it. Finally left with his menudo, shaking his head, not a good sign. Meanwhile, I ordered the fish tacos ($3 each). Heavily breaded and deep fried fish that was not cooked all the way through; the breading was still doughy. Rice in the tacos -more or less cold. My lunch had clearly sat for a bit before service. I was one of 2 tables of clients in the place at the time, so it's not like that waitress/kitchen was super busy. It was just not a good experience, on any level. I managed to eat enough of my lunch to justify the money spent. Then I came home and made my own Get Well Soon Mexican Chicken Soup. The whole experience was a huge and unnecessary disappointment. I am unlikely to return to Mama Mayras #2. ¡Qué lástima! What a shame! read more
