Date of visit: June 2, 2024 I was very wary of this place after seeing the low stars here on Yelp but this was a rare case where Yelpers got it wrong, we had a great experience here! First off, the nachos. Almost a week later I am still shocked at how great the nachos were here! The chips were wonderfully seasoned and blended with the cheese very well. My husband told me I should contact the restaurant to see where the chips came from so we can order them back in America! I had the duck and it was--wait for it--just ducky! Our friend went with the cheeseburger and there was no way that she could finish it, it was just so big. They even gave her latex gloves to use while eating it, which she took advantage of and tickled me endlessly! Really the only downfall here was that the prices were a bit high. Located in the Old Town Square and just steps away from the Astronomical Clock, Mama Lucy is a convenient spot to try different Czech traditional food with vegetarian and vegan options. My husband has been meaning to try pig knuckle (or pig knee) since we arrived in Prague, so we decided to dine here instead of my initial plan. When we arrived at lunch time, we were the only customers in the establishment even though it was Saturday, and we think that this was the case because it was pouring outside. However, our service was a bit slower than we had hoped, to a point where we felt like one of the servers was intentionally ignoring our calls or vigorous arm swings. When it was finally our time to order, my husband got the pig knee and I ordered the potato pancakes. However, the server insisted that I also order a vege burger (which she claimed was the other vegan option they offered) because "the pancakes are too small and they will not be enough". I was a bit confused and unhappy about this, as (1) potato pancakes were under the "main menu" and was not an appetizer, (2) the price of potato pancakes did not make them seem like it would not be enough (in other words, it cost as much as other entree items), and (3) I actually did not end up finishing my burger because it was too much food. I agree that the potato pancakes alone would not fill me up, but I don't think she had to force me into getting two items for myself. In terms of the food, my husband enjoyed his pig knee. The portion was huge, and he actually ended up having a little bit of leftovers. He also liked my potato pancakes, which I shared, knowing that I would not be able to finish two dishes by myself. Both of us agreed that it tasted very similar to Korean mung bean pancakes. The vege burger was a bit more disappointing than the rest of our orders --instead of a faux meat patty of some sorts, it was a huge chunk of beetroot with thin slices of tofu, arugula, and some other ingredients between two very thick, dry buns. All in all, this was a mediocre restaurant that I do not see myself coming back, but I was glad that there at least were a couple vegan options. FYI, their starter bread (which they did not let us know in advance that they would charge us for) and dip are not vegan. read more

Stopped in because we wanted some good food and seen some big pretzels on on the tables. First the pretzels were fake ... lol and the had signature lemonade so my wife and I tried one and they were terrible, it was fizzy water with fresh fruit and seeds. Good homemade authentic Czech food, it is a Prague so it will be pricey as documented by other Yelpers. the portions could be definitely shared since they are huge. the pork knuckle can feed three hungry man. The schnitzel also can feed at least two very hungry people. The potato pancakes were well seasoned and made fresh, very good. Beers are large as well. If you have a shirt visit in Prague and no time to travel anywhere else within the Czech Republic this place will give a great taste of local and country flavors. read more

According to other reviews, this place is getting a bad rep that I don't think they deserve. Just off the Old Town Square, this traditional Czech restaurant is all I could have asked for. I wanted to eat some local food, and most places were quite outrageously priced on the Square. This was just half a block from it and reasonable. Plus they had goulash on the menu so we decided to check it out. First of all, the little dining room holds maybe 40 people on a good day but it didn't feel cramped. They had cute rustic style decorations all over the walls and in the windows. We were sat in a corner booth and immediately given menus, had our drink order taken and brought out and food ordered. The portions are huge! We got the ribs, which was 700g and could have fed us both, and the goulash which came with 200g of beef in a thick broth and 4 huge bread dumplings that I couldn't even dream of finishing. Beers were cold and tasty and the service was fast and friendly. The couple sitting next to us asked the waitress to close the window and she went right over and did it. We ended up striking up a conversation with another American couple on the other side of us, just after finishing out dinner and I never felt like the wait staff were rushing us. That's the difference between Europe and America. They don't bring you your check until you ask for it. If you're looking for good home style Czech food that will fill you up, I highly recommend this place. read more

The chicken was over cooked, garlic soup was basic and the bread was dry. None of that is important here. What is important is that this place is not a restaurant, it's a scam. They charged for water, they charged for bread, they charged a 15% gratuity and mentioned none of this up front. All of the items we did order cost an additional 5 krouna compared to the menu price. Maybe the charitable reader could chalk all that up to misunderstanding. Some kind of lost in translation moment. Sadly that would not explain my change. I decided to pay the ridiculous fee instead of making an issue out of it, chalking this up as a learning experience. The change I should have gotten was 50 krouna which could have been exchanged in a 50 krona coin. What I got was 9 coins totaling 40 krona. So that's outright theft added to the fraud that was our dinner. I usually don't write reviews and try to be sympathetic to people in restaurant work. It's a tough gig. That said Mama Lucy is not a restaurant it's a thieving tourist trap. DON'T GO TO MAMA LUCY! read more

The atmosphere was cute. That's about where it stops. Four of us went. We all agreed that the food was mediocre. Despite it being a small restaurant and obviously over-staffed for the slow night they were having, we received very little attention from the servers. It was even impossible for us to order another large bottle of water for our table. With our meal, the waitress brought us six half pieces of bread. We thought nothing of it, until we received the bill. We were charged 90 CZK ($4.13) for the five half pieces of bread we ate; this surprise charge had not shown up on any bill from any other restaurant during our stay in Prague. We left feeling like we had been cheated/swindled. It is obviously a tourist trap, as it is half a block from New Town Square. I would never recommend going to this restaurant. Try a place called Krčma: the food is much better, the service is excellent, and no surprise fees. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST!! This place is a tourist trap. They will squeeze every cent they can out of you. First: They told us we could not have tap water. I don't like that policy, but it's not unheard of in Prague, so okay, I understand it. They want you to order a drink, I get it. However, when you order one of the most expensive drinks on the menu (absinthe), and a water to back, why make you pay for that too? That's just absurd. I'm not trying to be cheap; I ordered the most expensive meal, too! Second: The food was decent, but the service was HORRIBLE. The server was rude, snide, even condescending. When I told her I no longer wanted the absinthe i ordered if I also had to order a bottle of water separately, she then gave me a glass of warm tap water--no absinthe. Whaa? Then I ordered a beer. It didn't come till I was almost done with my meal, and of course it was absurdly large. She gave me the largest without informing me of the sizes so she could charge me the most. THIRD: When the bill came it had an unexpected charge on it. When we inquired, we were told it was the charge for using the napkins, silverware, and salt and pepper. Again, Whaaa?? Were we supposed to eat roast duck with our hands?? There is nothing on the menu about it and we weren't informed of it. FINALLY: At the bottom of the bill it says, "SERVICE CHARGE NOT INCLUDED" Seriously??? Never eat here. I should have looked up trip advisor before visiting this place and not going by the décor and ambience. The food was bad and i mean the meat quality was very poor. They charge you $2 for each of the condiments they serve you at your table. As a guest you assume the bread & butter that is served with the meal is included but not here. This is a tourist trap that serves poor quality food. I missed two vital clues as a globe trotting traveller. Rule 1- When you have someone soliciting business on the street for the restaurant, this is a give away. Rule 2 - When you see no locals at an establishment that is a tell tell sign. We wandered into this restaurant on the way back to our hotel after touring Old Town. We weren't quite sure what to expect as it looks quite traditional from the outside and even the inside. However, from the moment we walked in, we were treated very nicely. All the staff was very accommodating and very friendly. We ordered quite a bit of food as we had missed breakfast and had been walking all day. Everything was good and I would suggest this place if you are in the Old Town area. I came here with my husband on our honeymoon and the food was absolutely delicious. We were hungry from traveling and strolling around the city, and everything here hit the spot! We had the goulash which was very tasty, and we split the Farmer's platter which had potato pancakes, duck, dumplings, roasted ham, and sausage. It was great to split and we got to try a little bit of everything. The waitresses were also very friendly and brought us shot of a plum liquor to start! Such a pleasant surprise! I am a chef traveling from Los Angeles and have been struggling to find a descent meal here. Exactly the type of atmosphere you want in a funky old town Prague spot with shockingly good food. Enjoyed the simplicity of the garlic soup and had the chicken fettucine, I can't even stand pasta, it was damn good! My husband and sons enjoyed their goulash and schnitzel and of course beer is easier to get than water-cheers! We are going to make sure our last meal in Prague is here. The culinary revolution hasn't quite hit Prague yet but this is a glimmer of sunshine hidden on a side street that is worth seeking out! read more

Warning! Do not go here. Worst experience. We were wandering around the old town on our first night in Prague looking for a nice meal... the service was shocking and the food was way overpriced for what you get. Wish we had read reviews before hand we just winged it and thought we will just sit down somewhere close by. First they give you bread without telling you it's a charge, so we put it aside and didn't eat it. The Coca Cola my partner had was flat. They are very pushy after the meal for more drinks, dessert etc after being asked twice, and "are you sure"?! For 2 meals and 2 drinks it was 915kn and we gave 1000kn expecting change and she just walked off and didn't give us our change, expecting that to be a tip. Once we came up to the desk she did not say a word she looked down and rolled her eyes and gave us the change and was rude. We were horrified with her service as she was so unprofessional and obviously on some illegal drugs the way her eyes and mouth were moving throughout the whole night, it was disgusting and we were appalled. The table next to us were clearly angry with their bill and questioning the waiters. I wouldn't even rate it a 1 star to be honest. Could not say a good thing about our night, wasn't nice to start our trip to Prague. read more
