I stopped by Mama Lo Hizo for a quick snack with my husband during a trip to Findlay Market. They have a pretty big menu, but the item that caught my eye was the queso filled corn muffin. It was everything I could've hoped for and more. It is literally a soft corn muffin with a hole in the top that they ladle queso into. Not sure why more places don't serve this. We visited the market during a busy Saturday afternoon and while talking to one of the vendors we asked where should we try.....she said this place had the best tacos! We tried the carnitas which was a limited time option and glad we did, I also tried the chicken. Not sure the marinade/sauce chicken was in but very good flavor, I also ordered some of the medium sauce on the side which wasn't too spicy and had great flavor. 4 tacos and a jarritos was $17, can't beat that at all!!!!!!! I haven't been here in awhile. Once upon a time the fish tacos had a recipe that included cabbage and a cream sauce. Now you choose your toppings and the server tried to charge me for cheese (I would never on a fish taco)! My taco was nice. The customer service definitely left something to be desired. Fresh, yummy food served by friendly staff! I had got a lot of recommendations to come here during a trip to Findlay Market and I'm happy I did. It's hard to pass up a corn muffin with queso, which is just one of the things they serve. I also tried a potato pancake (this style was similar to a good hash brown) and a fish bowl (burrito ingredients just in a bowl). Looked like a small authentic Mexican Chipotle style place inside Findlay market. Turned out to be very bad. I got the steak burrito. White rice was plain, salsa had almost no flavor and steak was barely seasoned and also was not really served hot. Taco salad was some tortilla chips lining a plate with salad and toppings in middle. The meat sauce was cold and, again, everything had almost no flavor. Two thumbs down when the chain store is much much better than a small local place. I do not recommend. read more

By far my favorite place for tacos in the entire city, not just within Findlay Market. For a great price, you can get customizable tacos with a variety of fresh and delicious toppings. Come hungry too because they will load them up! I thought the chicken taco was my favorite option, but then I tried the scrambled egg option for breakfast one day and I fell in love. For toppings I definitely recommend the cheese (like a mild monterrey jack) and the pico. Most importantly, get the queso, either on the side or directly on the taco. And if you really love the queso like I do, then you must also try their queso-stuffed cornbread muffins. Your life will change for the better. read more

Mama Lo Hizo has become my go-to food stand to eat at when I visit Findlay Market. It's odd because I just went off on my last review of Chipotle that I'm just not overall a fan of this type of food. Something about the way they make it here, the freshness of it, makes me enjoy it. On this latest visit I ordered a burrito with steak, white rice, hot salsa, and cheese. I also had an order of their chips and queso. Again, all the ingredients they use are so fresh. The steak is tender and flavored very nicely, the rice is..well rice, not a fan of rice usually but within a burrito I don't mind it. There's definitely is made in a way that supports the other flavors of the burrito and does nothing to mute them. The hot salsa is sooo fresh, with big chunks of tomato and onion..and the hot version provides a nice kick. The cheese has a great flavor to it too..it's very light and..fluffy? Ha..I don't know..it just tastes good. All these flavors combined make for a very tasty burrito. Their chips and queso are excellent. They give you a decent amount of both..and the cheese combinations they use in their queso really tastes great. I would say the queso is good enough to order even if I'm not in the mood for a burrito. The staff is always friendly and very helpful in making suggestions on what kind of flavor combinations to choose. Also, Mama Lo Hizo is probably one of the most affordable food stands at Findlay Market. The portions are huge and you more than get your moneys worth. In comparison, my last Chipotle order was very similar to this one and it cost me almost $13. Here the burrito was a lot bigger and made with much fresher ingredients. The queso here was, no joke, 2-3 bigger than what they give you at Chipotle, and there really is no comparison in quality, this place blows Chipotle's queso out of the water. For everything I got here it cost me around $12..including adding a drink, whereas I didn't even get a drink at Chipotle. The value here is pretty clear. If you're a fan of this type of food I would say to definitely give this place a shot. Even if you're not a fan, like me, I'd still say give it a shot. The food is really really good. read more

I expected a much different experience from this place when I decided to check it out for lunch. I thought it would be more of an authentic taqueria spot, where as it's really closer to a Chipotle place. Basic choices are the same, switching out the melted queso at Mama Lo's for the guacamole that Chipotle has, I'll let you decide if that's a worthy change. It's very good at that though! The staff was awesome, served us even though they had been shutting down and cleaning up, had only one serving of chicken left, but they loaded us with steak to compensate. The rice, salsas, beans, were all good, but the cabbage they had was awesome. I've not seen that at a taco place, and really enjoyed the unique flavor it gave. My one complaint? They limit you to two items if you buy a salad - they give you a lot of each of those items, but if I wanted say pico and corn salsa, I then couldn't also get cabbage. Burritos and bowls get 4 each, which is enough to keep your servings from overflowing, and reasonable. If they changed that rule it's an easy 5, because the food here is great and the value is on point - provided you go in expecting a local Chipotle. read more

Honestly, this was most disappointing taco I've ever bought from a taco establishment. For one, it was COLD which I found very unpalatable... who wants a taco that tastes like the whole thing just came out of a fridge? I saw their back stock of ingredients and it looks like they hardly use anything fresh- mainly canned, frozen, and bagged stuff. This is one of the food stands in Findely Market. It was my first time visit and it was a very tasty and memorable one! I got the locals' favorite, Fish Tacos in the traditional style which is salted and peppered Tilapia, a green sour cream sauce, and cole slaw. You can add other toppings like pico de gallo and corn salsa. For my taste it was a bit too salty, but the guy grabbed fish from the bottom of their batch because they top the fish with onions which I can't have. So he was super nice about that, but I must've gotten the extra sauced fish. Over all, I'd def. go again, but I wouldn't get the Lemon Chill again. The food was bland and boring! I have never eaten anything like this when it comes down to Mexican food? How the hell do you not have lime or jalepenos in your Pico? The burrito bowl tasted like salt only. The rice and beans tasted like someone cooked in leftover water. Undercooked rice was so bad that I tasted every rice grain. Why make rice only to serve people undercooked rice in some nasty tasting water? The bowl wasn't a bowl at all, it was too small. Lastly the corn muffin with queso tasted semi decent but it was over made. The Jarritos drink was the only thing I enjoyed. Why charge us Chipotle prices when your doesn't reflect their quality? The cook needs to be introduced to true Mexican spices and to be taught how to use them. I honestly thought that I had found a "mom-and-pop spot!" So disappointed! I am always up for trying to find good Mexican food in the tri-state area. I have tried Mama Lo Hizo several times at Findlay Market, always surprised by the flavors that come out of the all (?) white staff. There is NOTHING wrong with that, just not the usual experience for real Mexican/Latin flavors (the absence of yellow cheese does a lot for their credibility and people certainly gain expertise in various ways!). They are friendly, efficient, and becoming more and more busy as time goes on. I am a big fan of the tacos- the fish are a new addition with a tasty sauce, beef is ground and crumbly, and chicken is succulent. They add what you like in terms of toppings (line style and in front of you) and use wonderful, white Mexican cheese! I've eaten a stray piece off of questionably clean table tops...it's that good (and refreshing to see). The salsa is tasty and there are three levels of spice to choose from. Wrapped in foil and warm until you open them, I feel like I'm home or at a street cart in Mexico, perhaps. This is a good thing. They also serve burritos (the breakfast version sounds wonderful), nachos, Mexican lasagna, corn bread, and have special dishes from time to time. The staff is nice, the flavors are good, the price is right ($2-3/taco) and they have great additions like Jarritos sodas (real sugar) to round out the experience. Big thumbs up to Mama Lo Hizo. Umm. Not sure why people like this place so much. Nothing authentic about a Mexican joint that can't make their own corn and flour tortillas. You DONT buy package tortillas if you own a good Tex-mex restaurant. They're easy to make! That's standard at even fast food Tex-mex in Texas. The tortas was okay and the corn muffin was good. They didn't even have pork tacos?? Not sure what state they visited when they thought they were in Texas having "Tex-mex" but my guess is New York. Overall, it's average and not bad. It is not uncommon to catch me at Findlay Market during my lunch break double fisting Mama Lo Hizo's chicken tacos while meandering through the crowd. This is by far one of my favorite places to eat during the week and I never can seem to tear myself away to try some of the other vendors at the Market. The seasoning on the chicken is wonderful and the meat is so succulent, moist and juicy. I have not tried any of their other offers but my husband said they have an awesome steak taco. I'm not really into spicy foods so I find if I opt to pass on the salsa at other places the food taste bland but this isn't the case at Mama Lo Hizo's. My choice is simple; two chicken tacos with cheese, lettuce and light sour cream. If there was a taco heaven Mama's tacos would be the gate keepers. The prices are stellar as well. Before I discovered Mama Lo Hizo's I would head on down to a popular fast food chain and easily drop $7 on a combo meal and I would feel like a lazy sack of goo after eating it. For $5.50 I get two hefty tacos (and I'm not exaggerating here) and a can of pop. Once I thought I was starving and bought three tacos only to discover that I could barely finish the first two! Their ingredients are home made, fresh and crisp. I've heard Mama's has killer fish tacos and if I could ever pull myself away from the chicken I would try them. A group of friends and I decided to visit Findlay Market on a Saturday for lunch. After walking through all the booming aisles, some of us decided on lunch at Mama Lo Hizo. From what I could remember, they have items such as burritos, tacos, and burrito bowls and you were able to customize it however you like with several toppings. There was no wait time and the food was prepared quickly in front of you. Food: - Steak Burrito Bowl - my bowl was packed with rice, steak, onions, lettuce, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, and this green sauce that I really liked. The bowl reminded me a lot of Chipotle's burrito bowl. - Steak Taco - my friend liked her taco and I thought it was going to be a tiny taco, but she was full from just eating one taco. - Drinks - they sell Pepsi products in cans (not fountain) and bottled water. OK, so this isn't saying much, but so far, this gets my vote for Best Mexican in Cincinnati. Mexican food in Cincinnati is a travesty. A nightmare. It's sad. Most places you go feel like part of the same chain. Same tired decorations, same exact menu, all the food looks like it came out of a low-cost industrial food supply store. I can just imagine them opening a 20 pound can of refried bean paste. People all refer to these places as authentic, and they're not even trying to be ironic! The thing that sets Mama Lo Hizo apart, is that it embodies what Mexican food is supposed to be: fresh, simple, tasty flavor You pick what you want and they pile it on. Tons of food for the money if you get the soft corn or flour tacos. Salsa is decent but not amazing. Chips are the same. It still isn't quite up to the standard of places close to the border with chefs raised on generational authentic preparation, but again, we're in Cincinnati, so it's all good. read more

I have walked past this place too many times. I am so happy my friend convinced me to come here. They have the best fish tacos in the city. Hands down. I've tried fish tacos at Nada, Bakersfield, and La Mexicana - all of which have very good fish tacos. These are easily the best. I can't speak to how good anything else is, and I'm not sure I even care. The tacos are really big too - $10 gets you a drink and 3 tacos - enough to feed a growing manboy. Sorry Taste of Belgium... I found my new love for brunch at Findlay market. I'll admit, I'm not a big breakfast person. I don't care for bacon or sausage patties, or breakfast meats in general normally (don't shun me!) I'm fine with eggs and toast. But lets be real, that's not really filling or that tasty for the most part. But what Mama lo Hizo throws together is just pure deliciousness! If you don't get a good burrito or bowl, it's really your own fault, as you choose what you want on it. No standard all-in-one and one only package here. Only a little bit hungry? Go for the bowls. They're smaller than the burritos. The burritos will fill you up. And you can choose from a regular flour or wheat tortilla. I feel like i remember a spinach tortilla one time, but I could be mistaken. Then you get scrambled eggs, and your choice of chicken, steak, or just veggies. I tend to stick with the steak. its cooked well, but still tender chunks. There are 2 different types of pico de gallo, and then 5 different sauces in differing heats and styles. There are 3 salsas, a green sauce, and a corn sauce, as well as some queso sauce. I recommend the "mild but flavorful" salsa as it was described to me. The fact that the sauces are cold compared to the warmth of the rest of the burrito kind of throws me off a little. I wish they were at least room temp so as not to cool down the eggs and steak so fast, but man its still a great breakfast! read more

Woah, Mama! Mama lo Hizo is exactly what I was hoping to find for lunch as a perused the Findlay Market. I had the Ground Beef Taco (2.00) and Nachos (5.50) and either item would have made a filling lunch on its own. The ingredients are really fresh (Talk about tasty tomatoes and in the winter too!) and the pico was on point. The Taco was definitely a two hand holder (not a super burrito like Chipotle) and but it was filled just right, hardly any of my burrito ingredients fell out as I ate it. It was pretty basic but basically delicious; ground beef (not dry AT ALL), pico, white cheddar, and bright, green lettuce (not iceberg). The Nachos (which you can see a display of behind the glass) are great! Filled with thick, crispy tortilla chips and covered with just the right amount of toppings (I had ground beef, pico and white cheddar cheese). At first glance the toppings seem a just a tad skimpy but as you attack it, it's prefect. And they really do a nice job of getting the queso in between and around the chips (it pools a bit in the bottom, the perfect way to finish those last naked chips). Unfortunately there is one lady that is consistently EXTREMELY rude and hostile to us every single time that we try to order that we no longer feel comfortable going there. I'm usually skeptical when a few white folks run an ethnic joint. And you know, some of the food is really blah. but there are two things that I really enjoy at this spot, and I'll keep coming back from them, because they may not be authentic, but DAMN, they're good. 1. The nachos, and their cheese sauce is delicious. I don't know what part of Mexico it's from, none I've ever been to, but it's good. and they are filling. 2. The breakfast burrito. Again, their cheese sauce, the eggs, it just works. It's good, It's not legit mexican food, but it's for sure grubtastic. I ate here because I had regularly seen police or firemen getting their lunch here. They're always in the area so I assumed they would know the best places to eat. Wow! I think you have to order the tacos in order to get the best experience here. The fish taco prepared authentically is my absolutely favorite. They have yummy salsa as well and my tacos were extremely flavorful and tasty. Man-Friend got the burrito which was also good, and they have Mexican coke with real cane sugar -- mmmmm -- my favorite and the only way I'll drink a regular coke!
